He ended it with a rousing "Strike Up The Band" addressed to the wartime audience. Much more material is in the complete program. None of these gained him widespread acclaim. Since retiring to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, he has written a family history tracing his ancestry back to 1735. Though documentation is elusive, he has found considerable evidence that his ancestry began even earlier. Several of his stories, often about his ancestors, have appeared in the Personal Stories Publishing Project. Joel continues to write because he likes to.

Pioneering Southern rock troubadours Little Feat have announced the May 9 release of their forthcoming studio LP, Strike Up The Band. As a preview of the set, the band has shared their initial single, "Too High To Cut My Hair," and the official music video, featuring the theatrics of Lily Winwood playing the role of stoned hairdresser to each member of the band that visits her."Too High To Cut My Hair," presents the ensemble's funk capability with the siphoned blues-fueled cadence of Sam Clayton's classic low C to create a roaring introduction to the band's latest project. The track was written by longtime member, Fred Tackett, who had a large part in crafting lines and lyrics across the album. "Fred Tackett shines all over this record, as he always does, but in particular in his writing," bandleader Bill Payne reaffirmed. Payne explains the backstory behind the single via press release: "'Too High To Cut My Hair' is based on a true story where [Tackett] and his wife Patricia were in a hotel room in New Orleans. Fred had asked for a trim, but decided that she was too high to cut his hair. And then he thought, 'oh my god, what a title!'"He continues, "People love the humor in our records, a cherished entree to those when they find it. So I'm happy this song displays that humor, and in full. It's also got the classic Sam Clayton doing his, three octaves below middle C voice in there - Too High To Cut My Hair! Everyone that has heard it has said, 'That's a Little Feat song,' and I know what they mean!"Little Feat sprinkles the collective wisdom of a 56-year-old band across the 13-track record, granting listeners access to their collective prowess and sonic dexterity on songs like "Bluegrass Pines (Ft. Molly Tuttle, Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams), ""4 Days Of Heaven, 3 Days Of Work," "Shipwrecks" and "Midnight Flight." "'Strike Up The Band' really began in the winter of 2019 when I was subbing for Paul Barrere, and he passed away on the day of that first show," says Scott Sharrard, "Continuing through the pandemic shut down (and a lot of practicing and songwriting during that time), to our return to the road in 2021. Then on to our recording field trip to Memphis that resulted in the Grammy Nominated blues album of classic blues covers 'Sam's Place.' That one gave us all the chance to tighten up as a band and re-visit the Rosetta Stone of rock and roll, the blues. We have paid a lot of dues to get here, and all roads have led us to this new album." "When discussing the album with the band and where it sits in our canon," Payne adds. "Our predecessor to this record in my mind was 'Let It Roll.' We are in a similar position to introduce Little Feat once again with this new collection of songs. It is my feeling that, from what we had been playing over the last few years, there's no question the overwhelming majority of fans would accept the album for what it is: an unmistakable iteration of Little Feat that highlights, with great songs and musicianship, the very best of an ongoing legacy, expressly evoking and expanding upon what people think of when they hear Little Feat."Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

Little Feat's legend goes back to 1969! The band has produced ubiquitous hits like "Dixie Chicken" and "Willin'." Their influence stretches across generations. They have endured heartbreak, loss, and lineup changes but the core Little Feat sound has remained true since the beginning. Scott Sharrard joined LIttle Feat in 2019 and has been instrumental in their efforts leading up to the band's latest record Strike Up The Band, which was released on May 9th, 2025. In addition to his work with Little Feat, Scott was the band leader for the Gregg Allman Band and his band The Chesterfields. The band, and Scott, have lived a fascinating musical life. The song you are hearing in this episode is "Midnight Flight" from Little Feat's excellent new record. Listen on: Spotify- Apple Podcasts- YouTube-

It's Groundhog Day! Back in Episode 45 Connor introduced us to George Gershwin's Rhapsody In Blue, and described it as his "going mad montage" where he tried to catch a pesky gopher. So we decided today should be Gopher Day instead! We're celebrating by revisiting George and Ira Gershwin and some of the iconic music that made their careers the stuff of legends. From the banks of the Swanee to Porgy & Bess and every concerto, suite, and show tune in between, these brothers were international pioneers of America's musical pantheon. We cover their lives end to end (and then some) with 13 of their greatest works, learn about their secondary careers, experience gastric dysfunction, and discuss the differences between groundhogs and gophers. Time to reap what we've sown... It's a new kind of holiday special you'll go-pher time and time again!Experience the Gershwins' Fascinating Rhythms with our playlist of songs for the episode! Lux Radio Theatre, sometimes spelled Lux Radio Theater, a classic radio anthology series, was broadcast on the NBC Blue Network (1934–35) (owned by the National Broadcasting Company, later predecessor of American Broadcasting Company [ABC] in 1943–1945); CBS Radio network (Columbia Broadcasting System) (1935–54), and NBC Radio (1954–55). Initially, the series adapted Broadway plays during its first two seasons before it began adapting films. These hour-long radio programs were performed live before studio audiences. The series became the most popular dramatic anthology series on radio, broadcast for more than 20 years and continued on television as the Lux Video Theatre through most of the 1950s. The primary sponsor of the show was Unilever through its Lux Soap brand. Michael Feinstein, American songbook performer, discussing his work as archivist for Ira Gershwin with host Richard Wolinsky, Michael Feinstein is an American singer, songwriter and classicist of the American songbook. At the age of 20, he was hired to help Ira Gershwin archive his collection of recordings and preserving unpublished Gershwin sheet music. He continued that task for the next seven years. By the 1980s he was a well known cabaret performer, and soon had several CDs under his belt. He has been nominated five times for Grammy Awards. Has been the subject of a PBS documentary series, and hosts a radio show on NPR, among other projects, along with two nightclubs, one of which, Feinstein's at the Nikko, is in San Francisco. His latest album is titled “Gershwin Country.” Created to air as commentary for a 1991 KPFA Morning Concert focused on a new recording of the 1927 production of “Strike Up The Band,” excerpts of this interview were also intended to be used for a radio documentary on the life of George Gershwin. This was one of seven interviews recorded for the program before it was abandoned. Three interviews have already been posted as Radio Wolinsky podcasts. The three remaining interviews, with Gershwin scholar Deena Rosenberg, author and musicologist Robert Kimball and the late Broadway composer Burton Lane, will eventually be posted. This interview has not been heard since its initial broadcast on KPFA. George Gershwin was born in 1898 and his brother Ira two years earlier. At the age of 15 he took a job as a song-plugger, playing other people's songs on a piano for Remick Music Publisher for the sale of their sheet music. His first composed song was published when he was 17, and at 21 he scored his first big hit, Swanee. But it wasn't until 1924 when he teamed up with his brother Ira as lyricist that George Gershwin became, what we might call a superstar, which he remained until his untimely death from a brain tumor in 1937. Ira Gershwin, who went on to work with other composers until he retired in the early 1960s, died in 1983. The Gershwin Project Interview I: English Strunsky, Ira Gershwin's brother-in-law and George's wingman in the 1920s. Interview II: Musicologist Deena Rosenberg and Michael Strunsky, Ira Gershwin's nephew. Interview III: Kitty Carlisle. The post The Gershwin Project IV: Michael Feinstein, 1991 appeared first on KPFA.
If you haven't looked into data orchestration to streamline your data analysis, listen up. Joining Eric Kavanagh in today's episode are esteemed guests here to discuss a new spin on data orchestration. "The whole world is up for grabs right now with respect to data!" notes Houseware Co-Founder Divyansh Saini, whose technology gives business users direct access to data-driven metrics in Snowflake. And when they say metrics, they're referring to the actual, live data of the business, thus (finally) empowering business people to quickly and easily cobble together meaningful views of what's really happening. Check out this episode of #DMRadio to learn more about it with Saini and two special guests: Chris Sachs, Co-Founder of Swim, whose company is reinventing the entire data supply chain, opening the door to actual real-time in ways never before seen in this industry; and Taylor McGrath, VP Data Labs at Rivery.io, whose company is simplifying data orchestration for business users across the board!
From AFRTS, July 1964. The program opens with Strike Up the Band by George Gershwin (Photo). Also music by R. Strauss, Khachaturian and Bizet.
Each of us is a musician, playing a part in a symphony we will never fully understand – yet, that's no reason not to play with gusto.
The biggest names in Hollywood and Broadway recorded for AFRS during the war years, The American Forces Network can trace its origins back to May 26, 1942, when the War Department established the Armed Forces Radio Service (AFRS). The U.S. Army began broadcasting from London during World War II, using equipment and studio facilities borrowed from the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). The first transmission to U.S. troops began at 5:45 p.m. on July 4, 1943, and included less than five hours of recorded shows, a BBC news and sports broadcast. That day, Corporal Syl Binkin became the first U.S. Military broadcasters heard over the air. The signal was sent from London via telephone lines to five regional transmitters to reach U.S. troops in the United Kingdom as they prepared for the inevitable invasion of Nazi-occupied Europe. Fearing competition for civilian audiences the BBC initially tried to impose restrictions on AFN broadcasts within Britain (transmissions were only allowed from American Bases outside London and were limited to 50 watts of transmission power) and a minimum quota of British produced programming had to be carried. Nevertheless AFN programmes were widely enjoyed by the British civilian listeners who could receive them and once AFN operations transferred to continental Europe (shortly after D-Day) AFN were able to broadcast with little restriction with programmes available to civilian audiences across most of Europe (including Britain) after dark. As D-Day approached, the network joined with the BBC and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation to develop programs especially for the Allied Expeditionary Forces. Mobile stations, complete with personnel, broadcasting equipment, and a record library were deployed to broadcast music and news to troops in the field. The mobile stations reported on front line activities and fed the news reports back to studio locations in London. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Entertainment Radio Stations Live 24/7 Sherlock Holmes/CBS Radio Mystery Theater https://live365.com/station/Sherlock-Holmes-Classic-Radio--a91441 https://live365.com/station/CBS-Radio-Mystery-Theater-a57491 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
