Dzięki rewolucji technologicznej możemy to robić bez potężnego zaplecza technicznego. MacColl, Seeger i Parker, do każdej audycji gromadzili setki taśm z nagranymi rozmowami …spośród nich wybierali najciekawsze i, uwaga w ORYGINALE puszczali w eter. W tamtych latach - szok. Audycja zawiera utwory: “Song of the Iron Road”, wyk. Luke Kelly i The Dubliners, sł. i muz. Ewan MacColl “Just a Note”, wyk. Karan Casey, sł. i muz. Ewan MacColl “Niech zabrzmi pieśń ”, wyk. Cztery Refy, sł. Ewan MacColl, tłum. Jerzy Rogacki muz. Ewan MacColl “On the North Sea Holes”, “The Big Hewer”, wyk. David Coffin, sł. i muz. Ewan MacColl “Morrissey and the Russian Sailor”, wyk. Seán 'ac Dhonnchadha, sł. i muz. trad. “Moving On Song”, wyk. MacColl Brothers, Chris Wood i Karine Polwart, sł. i muz. For St Patrick's Day?  "Hanging at two of our favorite Irish pubs, drinking Guinness and Jameson, and listening to some great Irish bands. We constantly have Celtic music on in our house and we are planning a trip to Ireland this summer.  Our trip three years ago got squashed due to the pandemic." Travis Senzaki replied: "Hi Marc, thank you for continuing to put out this podcast year after year! This St. Patrick's Day, the podcast is really my only connection to Celtic culture, so I'll be spending the evening listening with my kids. Over the years of listening, I have moved from the US to rural Japan, where there is no other access to my Irish roots. I have to travel to even find Guinness on tap. But thanks to you, my kids have picked up on Celtic music (or "Daddy's car music", as they call it) and even recognize it when some of the common themes find their way into movie or game music. I hope to continue sharing this music and culture with them as they grow older, and your podcast remains my best resource to do so. Thank you! Thanks again for all you do! I'm looking forward to listening to the St. Patrick's Day episode(s) over a glass, even if I have to pour it from a can. Slainte!" Sarah Shorter replied: "Good morning Marc. We are enjoying some autumn sunshine down in new zealand. I'm listening with my son (18 months old) and he loves the show. St Patrick's for us will be attending play centre (a parent run education centre) where we will be making shamrock fairy bread.( green sprinkles on buttered bread cut out with a cookie cutter) quite a conglomeration of celtic and new zealand cultures. We will also be bringing in a play list to share with the kids ( aged 0 to5 ) I'm just putting it together now starting from the best of 2022 and 2023 Playlist.. Kia Ora"

Music by many of the performers just announced for the Vancouver Folk Music Festival at Jericho Beach Park July 14-16. So good that the festival will actually happen this year, after its demise seemed imminent a few months ago. Kudos to interim AD Fiona Black for assembling such a stellar lineup at short notice! Also a mini-feature on Irish singer Clare Sands, and a bunch of new releases from Eilen Jewell, Leftover Salmon, Tinariwen, Denmark's Vesselil and Hielosa, as well as Natalie Merchant, Bruce Cockburn, Karan Casey, Imar, Shirley Collins etc. Also a few Gordon Lightfoot songs from the man himself and from Tony Rice. Plus a few more favourite artists from the past 38 years hosting this radio show - which could be broadcast again from Jericho Park in July! Yay!!

Andrew and I were practicing daily on the South Mall of the university as the Brobdingnagian Bards. So we were there as a bunch of students ran through the school shouting and waving signs about the oppression of pants. The event resonated with me because, well, we wore kilts at all of our shows. We were “pantless” too. The event spread to other locations around the nation and eventually the world. But it took me four years before I wrote “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day”, a parody of the traditional Scottish song “Jock Stuart”. Instead of “a man you don't meet every day”, my song was about a man who loved wearing kilts, like I did. I didn't stop there. Again, I felt like No Pants Day was a Scottish holiday. So I decided to create a backstory for my song. I wanted people to think that the origins of No Pants Day was actually a Scottish holiday called No Troosers Day. I researched Scottish history and learned about the Proscription Act of 1746. This act banned the Scots from wearing “highland clothing”. The goal of course was to assimilate the Scots into Great Britain, just like the Disarming Act banned the Scottish from wearing weapons. From that base, I wrote a fictional history of an uprising in Glasgow where the Scots removed their trousers and donned their kilts and rewrote “Jock Stuart” to celebrate their love of the kilt and their culture. The best thing about this fictional history was that a few years later, a newspaper in Canada quoted the blog where I shared this fake history saying that this was ACTUALLY the origins of No Pants Day. This should serve as a reminder to all of us. Check your sources! I finally recorded this song in 2009 for my CD, Kilted For Her Pleasure. “Jock Stuart (A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day)”  lyrics by Marc Gunn, May 6, 2004, music traditional Oh my name is Jock Stuart, I´m a trooser-less man And my roving young fellows move freely * So be easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I´m a man who wears a kilt every day. I'm Highlander made and a piper to trade And the tartan is me flag that I wear. I go out with my gun and my dog for to hunt Try to make me wear troosers, and you'll pay. I've got acres of land, I've got ships to command So burn your pants on No Troosers Day So come fill up my glass with whiskey or rum Then send o'er your lass and you'll see. It's better easy and free in nae boxers or briefs I'm a man who wears a kilt every day. 20:52 - Marc Gunn “A Man Who Wears A Kilt Every Day” from Kilted For Her Pleasure 23:40 - JOIN THE CLUB The show is brought to you by my Gunn Runners on Patreon. It also lasts pretty much forever. It is virtually impossible to remove it entirely from what I buy. But I have found a few items that I enjoy that are not that I thought I'd share. Did you know you can buy shampoo and conditioner in bar form? This was one of those weird rabbit holes I went down. Once upon a time, we didn't have liquid shampoo and conditioner. It certainly wasn't in a big plastic bottle. A day after I started researching this a few months back, Gwen came home with a Love Beauty and Planet shampoo conditioner bar from Target. I immediately tried it out and loved it. You can see a list of Shampoo and Conditioner bars here. My favorite body soap is the Dr Bronner's Lavender soap. I was starting to lament losing that when I just saw they have bar soap also. And of course, all of those are wrapped in paper and I can get it at my local Publix. 34:58 - Marc Gunn “Kilty Pleasure” from Selcouth 38:59 - CREDITS Thanks for listening to Pub Songs & Stories. The poem is titled “A Returned Soldier's Lament” I've renamed the song 1924 partly because I have made small changes to the text  -  and have added a verse,  but also the date is really significant to the meaning of the words.  The poem references WW1 from that date: being 6 years after the war ended, 9 years after the majority of the ANZAC troops joined the war and 8 years after their greatest involvement and losses both at Gallipoli and all along the Western front. Oh  -  and it's going to be on our next duo album that will be out sometime this year.  Caveat warning, however; -   we're so busy doing a load of other things  -  including the beginnings of a new Purcells Polyphonic Party album as well as festivals and folk clubs and recording for TV and games…. that any plan for launching is going to have to be quite  vague. 44:20 - Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer "1924" 50:12 - THANKS 51:48 - Paddyman "The Best Pub Party in the World" from One for the Road 54:36 - Kellys Wayke "Walk the Mile" from Kellys Wayke 58:10 - the commoners "What's Your Whiskey For" from What's Your Whiskey For 1:01:42 - Michael Maloney "'Round the Mountains of Mourne" from January Hopeful 1:05:32 - CLOSING 1:07:11 - The Druids "South Australia" 1:09:35 - CREDITS The Irish & Celtic Music Podcast was produced by Marc Gunn, The Celtfather and our Patrons on Patreon. Scott McCreary replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Hey Marc I listen to the Irish and Celtic music podcast while whittling and or wood working, cutting the grass in my two acre yard or at break time at my job at Amazon. This St. Patrick's day I don't really have plans but will definitely have corned beef for supper. I may get ambitious and make a coddle or stew at some point. I have always heard that you don't choose Ireland. Ireland chooses you and that's my case. I am an Irish descendent but have never been to Ireland. I eat up all I can about it I.e. the language, music, movies and pictures and culture. I celebrate Ireland every day " Marguerite Kearns replied: "I am just listening to the content of your songs and music. Doing nothing else. Some things don't fit well with multitasking...you fit into that category. Onward" Michael Corbett emailed: "Hi Marc! This is Michael from Seldom Sober.  You were a great supporter of ours when we released our last CD in 2019.  I'm sorry to tell you that Colleen, the other half of Seldom Sober, is having health problems. It would really lift her spirits for you to play one of her tune sets.  Since our last CD was 4 years ago it doesn't get much attention anymore, but she loves hearing that we're being played around the world.  We were actually big in New Zealand when the CD first came out.  Just let me know which episode it's on.  She knows I listen to your podcast, so I'll just tell her I heard it Thanks for your consideration!  Please keep up the good work!  You sponsored the main stage at the Savannah Irish Festival in 2019, and we appreciate that!”

Karan Casey  Does Singing Songs Make a Difference? This episode is a recording of Karan Casey's keynote presentation at the close of the conference of the European Music Therapy Confederation in Edinburgh, 8-12 June 2022. Karan talked about songs and social justice, arts practice research, and about her own life and experiences as a performer and campaigner on social issues. She performed a number of songs as part of the presentation, and then had a conversation with Luke Annesley to explore these issues further. It was an inspiring ending to a varied and exciting conference. About Karan: Singing songs charged with a sense of social responsibility in a career spanning over 25 years Karan Casey has released eleven albums as well as contributing to numerous other artists' projects – appearing on more than 50 albums in total. She has toured extensively throughout North America, Europe and Japan, performing with her own band as well as collaborating with such diverse musicians as Maura O'Connell, James Taylor, Bela Fleck, Boston Pops Orchestra, Kate Ellis, Niall Vallely, Pauline Scanlon, The Chieftains, The Dubliners, Peggy Seeger, Karen Matheson, Mick Flannery, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Tim O'Brien, Solas and Lúnasa.  In 2018 Karan helped found FairPlé which is an organization aimed at achieving fairness and gender balance for female performers in Irish traditional and folk musics. Karan tours with her band Niamh Dunne, Sean Óg Graham and Niall Vallely. Karan's most recent album Hieroglyphs That Tell the Tale was released on the Vertical Records Label. Her song “Down in the Glen” was nominated for Best Original Folk Song at the RTE Folk Awards 2019 and she completed a PhD in music in 2019. Karan has recently performed her new show with Director Sophie Motley called I Walked into My Head which was premiered at the Kilkenny Arts Festival 2021. Karan is currently working on a new stage show to be produced at the Everyman Theatre in Cork in early 2023 as well as an album of new songs about women in the Irish revolutionary period. Please note: As we are awaiting permission to include the performance of 'The King's Shilling' in this episode, here is a YouTube link to Karan's studio version of the song. Reviews of Karan's music: "Karan Casey's latest album is revelatory. She's always been a singer of songs that tell a story and show their muscle…This is a strikingly three-dimensional work that stands the test of intensive and repeated listening with ease. A vivid and dazzling snapshot of Casey invincible, at the height of her powers.” Siobhán Long, Irish Times   “Casey's voice is among the loveliest in folk music and she's a wonderful interpreter of both contemporary and traditional material.” BOSTON GLOBE   “Karan Casey's latest solo venture is a thing of rare beauty.” SING OUT   "The most soulful singer to emerge in Irish traditional music in the past decade." THE GLASGOW HERALD   “If ever any doubt existed about who's the best Irish traditional woman singer today, "Exiles Return" sweeps aside all pretenders…Karan Casey has no vocal peer.” IRISH ECHO   Songs Siúil a Rúin (trad.) Don't hire with any master till you know what your work will be You will rise up early from the clear day light till the dawn and you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.   Rise up, gallant Sweeney, and give your horse some hay And give them a good feed of oats before they stray away Don't feed them on soft turnip put them out on your green lawn Or they never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.   My curse upon you, Sweeney boy, you have me nearly robbed You're sitting by the fireside with your dúidín in your gob You're sitting by the fireside now from clear daylight till the dawn And you never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn   My shoes they are worn and my stockings they are thin My heart is always trembling for fear they might give in My heart is always trembling from the clear daylight till the dawn And I never will be able for to plough the Rocks of Bawn.   I wish the Queen of England she would call for me in time And place me in some regiment all in my youth and prime I'd fight for Ireland's glory from the clear daylight till dawn And I never would return again to plough the Rocks of Bawn.     Ballad of Accounting   In the morning we built the city In the afternoon walked through its streets Evening saw us leaving We wandered through our days as if they would never e All of us imagined we had endless time to spend We hardly saw the crossroads And small attention gave To landmarks on the journey from the cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave, cradle to the grave   Did you learn to dream in the morning? Abandon dreams in the afternoon? Wait without hope in the evening? Did you stand there in the traces and let them feed you lies? Did you trail along behind them wearing blinkers on your eyes? Did you kiss the foot that kicked you? Did you thank them for their scorn? Did you ask for their forgiveness for the act of being born, act of being born, act of being born?   Did you alter the face of the city? Did you make any change in the world you found? Or did you observe all the warnings? Did you read the trespass notices did you keep off the grass? Did you shuffle off the pavement just to let your betters pass? Did you learn to keep your mouth shut, Were you seen and never heard? Did you learn to be obedient and jump to at a word, jump to at a word, jump to at a word?   Did you ever demand any answers? The who, the what or the reason why? Did you ever question the setup? Did you stand aside and let them choose while you took second best? Did you let them skim the cream off and then give to you the rest? Did you settle for the shoddy? Did you think it right To let them rob you right and left and never make a fight, never make a fight, never make a fight?   What did you learn in the morning? How much did you know in the afternoon? Were you content in the evening? Did they teach you how to question when you were at the school? Did the factory help you grow, were you the maker or the tool? Did the place where you were living Enrich your life and then Did you reach some understanding of all your fellow men, all your fellow men, all your fellow men?     I'm Still Standing Here   See these lines upon my face They're a map of where I've been In the deep they are traced a deeper life has settled in How do we survive living out our lives   I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here   See these marks upon my skin They're the lyric of my life Every story that begins Means another ends in sight Only lover's understand Skin just covers who I am   I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here   See these bruises see these scars Hieroglyphs that tell the tale You can read them in the dark Through your fingertips like braille   I wouldn't trade a line make it smooth or fine Or pretend that time stands still I want to rest my soul here where it can grow without fear Another line another year I'm still standing here

Don't miss this great chat. Pauline Scanlon is a vocalist and songwriter who galvanized the Irish music scene with her stunning debut album, Red Colour Sun, Produced by John Reynolds over ten years ago. As featured vocalist with the Sharon Shannon Band for three years, as a solo artist, and as a member of vocal duo LUMIERE, Scanlon has entranced audiences the world over with her distinctly delicate intensity. Pauline Scanlon also brought her unmistakable vocal style to her second Compass release, ‘Hush'. Why do old ballads endure? Does it make sense to sing about Willie and Mary, when our playgrounds are filled with Ozzies and Loxleys? Do we really need to say “my love is like a red, red rose,” or can’t we use a modern metaphor and call her really hot? Laura Cortese, Cathy Jordan, Sam Amidon, Robbie O’Connell, and Karan Casey help host Shannon Heaton explore old ballads in a dating app era. There’s plenty of music here, too. Through you and your show I discovered a new depth to a world which I loved, but never knew was so varied. I am, of course, talking about celtic music. After listening to my first episode, I became immediately addicted to the wonderful music. Through iTunes I bought many a song that I heard on my podcast. Now, my iPod has about 60 hours of music. That is 2 1/2 days. I am definitely an addict of Celtic Music and am proud of it. May Hekate light the shadowed paths in your life" Patrick emailed from Rochester, NY: "Hi, Marc! My name is Patrick and I'm a young teen from New York. My grandfather introduced me to Celtic music and by the time I was 5 I could sing most of the drinking songs ever written. You asked for feedback so here it is: You should play more songs and less tunes. Don't get me wrong, jigs polkas and reels can be great but 40 minutes of them get boring after a little while. Overall though, it's a great podcast and you're an awesome host! P.S. I always swing while I listen to music. My grandfather always did it when I was little and since I have Aspergers Syndrome it helps calm my nerves. PPS: I recommend playing more music from Poxy Boggards and more from the Wolf Tones. Kyle Wagner-Dixon emailed last year: "I am a dog groomer from Ontario, Canada and I've been listening to your podcast now for almost 6 years. They make Celtic Rings & Jewelry for Men & Women and ship for Free all over the world. Amber Rodland was excited to hear about our sponsor because she wrote: I have always had a love for all things Celtic. We were never a fan of traditional wedding bands. My husband searched the web and found My Irish Jeweler. We fell in love with the Book of Kells band and got it in platinum, and we love them! I cannot say enough about the attention to detail put into these bands. In fact, the jeweler actually called us from Dublin, Ireland to confirm our sizes. The rings are very unique and a great reflection of us as a couple. We'll have been married for three years this coming Samhain, and I still get compliments on our bands. They are so beautiful and well-crafted. I recommend My Irish Jeweler to my friends looking for unique jewelry with a Celtic flair. But it's not just about wedding rings. Join us as we celebrate the release of Disney/Pixar's animated movie Brave with a look at Scotland's folklore, myths, and legends. In part one of a series, find out about the mythological creatures that inhabit Scottish lochs and rivers, including the kelpie, the selkie, and loch monsters like Nessie. We'll also look at the translations of Scottish poet James MacPherson, who gathered together fragments of Scotland's ancient folklore in the 18th century. You'll hear the Scottish Gaelic song by Julie Fowlis that's featured in trailers for Brave as well as songs from Ewan Robertson, Wolfstone, and Karan Casey.
