My client Brandon has had an amazing few years: he resolved several imbalances, improved his stride, healed ITBS, ran PR's in 4 major race distances, and also set a few training mileage PR's .... wow! In this episode, he explains how he turned his running around and got faster, healthier, and able to train even more. A big part was his embrace of strength training with our High Performance Lifting program. For other options, see all of our Training Programs. We discuss: What his training was like before he made this transformation How he changed his approach to running for the better The distances that he set PR's in The most important lessons he'd tell you if you want to improve Thanks Boulderthon! If you haven't tried 2XU's technical compression gear, you are missing out! I love their tights - if you're following me on Instagram you've seen me wear these tights all the time. Two Times You has been the world leader in performance compression for 20 years - helping runners feel better and recover faster with compression gear that's backed by scientific evidence. Their graduated compression gear is engineered to improve blood flow and performance, while speeding recovery. Plus, they also have arm and calf sleeves for more targeted compression if you need it. The Light Speed React compression half-tights are my go-to now that it's warming up here in Colorado. They're built for speed, have enough compression to give me the support I want, and enough pockets for my phone and a lot of gels. Knowing that their gear is engineered for runners, by runners, and backed by research, makes me absolutely love 2XU. In this episode of the Building HVAC Science Podcast, Bill Spohn and Eric Kaiser interview Jake Yurek, the co-founder of Pearl Edison, a platform designed to simplify the installation of energy-efficient systems for homeowners and contractors. Jake shares the origins of the company's name, inspired by Thomas Edison's first power station on Pearl Street, and explains how Pearl Edison partners with trusted entities like utilities and city governments to facilitate HVAC installations. Their approach aims to reduce customer acquisition costs for contractors while improving the decision-making process for homeowners. No runner wants to get injured. But the worst part of an injury is often the mental side of it, not the physical! Sure, you can go to the PT or self-treat your injury. That will help you physically heal. But what about your loss of identity when you can't run? What about the loss of a future goal? How will you respond to feeling like you lost your community? Perhaps more importantly, your mental outlook will affect how you treat your injury and the level of success of that treatment. We have to get this right! Joining me is mental skills coach and psychologist Carrie Jackson. She is the author of On Top of Your Game: Mental Skills to Maximize Your Athletic Performance and coauthor of Rebound: Train Your Mind to Bounce Back Stronger from Sports Injuries. She's worked with elite and pro runners around the world and her work has been featured in the New York Times, the Washington Post, Runner's World, and most other major media. You can hear even more of Carrie on her podcast, The Injured Athlete's Club. We discuss: How to practice acceptance Fear management strategies How to adjust goals Why "recovery is training" As a formerly injury-prone runner, this conversation really impacted me. I remember how each injury made me feel. And there's almost no worse feeling for a runner! It's one of the major reasons why my coaching practice and training programs all revolve around consistency and staying healthy so you can focus on your running. If you want to learn even more about how to prevent injuries, go to strengthrunning.com/prevention. Thank you LMNT! A big thanks to LMNT for their support of this episode! I feel dialed in and quick for these high-stakes conversations. There's also promising research – and loads of anecdotal evidence – that ketone supplementation can help with recovery if taken post-exercise. I know some of the best ultra runners in the world, Boston Marathon champ Des Linden, and the pro cycling team that won the TdF in 2022 and 2023 all take ketones post-race to aid recovery. Here's a thought experiment. You're a seasoned clean energy developer. You've got a pipeline of projects. You've navigated permitting, secured financing, refined your technology stack. Everything's lined up, and you're ready to build. There's just one problem: interconnection. To connect your projects, you have to go through a complex study process run by your utility, or your Regional Transmission Organization (RTO), or your Independent System Operator (ISO). They need to evaluate how your project impacts the grid, what upgrades are required, and how the costs get assigned. It's a system built for a different grid era, and today, the system is completely overwhelmed. For both developers and transmission providers, the interconnection queue has become a major obstacle. Developers depend on timely approvals to move projects forward. Transmission providers, meanwhile, are inundated with requests while also trying to maintain grid reliability, plan for future capacity, and, in many regions, meet aggressive decarbonization goals. And they're doing all of that with legacy software that was never built to handle this kind of volume or complexity. If you've been in the energy world for a while, you know this bottleneck well. But if you're new, here's the scale of the challenge: around 2.5 terawatts of renewable energy projects alone are currently stuck in interconnection queues across the U.S. At the same time, electricity demand is surging, driven by data centers, AI, EVs, and industrial electrification. The average wait time for grid interconnection in the U.S. is 6 years. Speeding up the interconnection study process could remove one of the most significant barriers to getting clean energy and storage projects online. But that requires smarter, modern tools. Our guest today, David Bromberg, Co-Founder and CEO of Pearl Street Technologies, has built those tools, and is helping transmission providers and developers navigate the interconnection process with unprecedented speed. The owner of Pearl Street Books, Beth Hartung, and La Crescent’s public library director, Jess Witkins, stopped in the WIZM studio to discuss, what else, books, including the best of 2024, book bans, reading as a New Year’s resolution, and what’s changed in popularity over the year and years. This is part of a series of La Crosse Talk PMs about New Year’s resolutions, as we discussed a couple of different strategies to help get you reading more — and how to stick with it. We also talked about a shift in popular genres over the years — including to fantasy to horror to unsolved murders — plus what’s been most popular in 2024 and what is a must read this year, and ever. We discussed book bans, how Wisconsin and Minnesota have handled those and making sense of why they happen. Other things we hit on included buying used and the two instances when you should buy new, plus reading physical books versus a digital copy. Hartung has owned Pearl Street Books downtown for three years, and talked about some of the events she’s been holding there to make the store more inclusive and a third space. Witkins has been with the library systems eight years and talks about programs they have and what’s been popular to the public there, lately.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Send us a textShaun Garin and Sam Goering are the two founding members of The Alcapones. After Garin moved to Boulder, he and Goering became friends, and one day, they played music together on Garin's couch. Garin had just started learning the accordion and Goering brought his saxophone. After the two started busking together on Pearl Street, Goering invited Garin to a jam session with members of a previous band of Goering's that had just ended, and the five people who performed in the jam together became the first lineup of The Alcapones. The lineup currently consists of Garin on guitar, Goering on alto saxophone, Jordan Lee Daniels on keyboard, Curly Collins on bass guitar, Nick Dolan on drums, Darin Jones on tenor sax, and Les Miller on trumpet.Gasoline Lollipops (often shortened to Gas Pops) is a title that even frontman Clay Rose knows is bizarre. During an LSD trip in his high school years, he and his friends started coming up with the most insane band names they could, and his ex-girlfriend suggested that name. He kept it in the back of his mind, knowing he wanted to use it for a band, and now, that name has a home with this group of musicians.Gas Pops originally started as a duo, consisting of Rose and drummer Jonny Mouser. The lineup has evolved constantly since then, with members even including Gregory Alan Isakov and his fiddle player Jeb Bows. The current lineup consists of Rose on acoustic guitar and vocals, Kevin Matthews on drums, Scott Coulter on keys, Don Ambory on electric guitar, and “Bad” Brad Morse on upright bass. While initially focusing on country-punk (or cowpunk) to lean more into the jarring band name, the band now experiments in multiple styles, with a general blanket of roots and roots-inspired music and more specific categories of ballads, soul, blues, country, and psychedelic and punk rock. Prudence Peiffer's first book, The Slip, is the never-before-told story of an obscure little street at the lower tip of Manhattan and the remarkable artists who got their start there. For just over a decade, from 1956 to 1967, a cluster of dilapidated former sail-making warehouses became the quiet epicenter of the art world. Coenties Slip, a dead-end street near the water, was home to a circle of wildly talented artists that included Robert Indiana, Ellsworth Kelly, Agnes Martin, James Rosenquist, Lenore Tawney, Delphine Seyrig, and Jack Youngerman. As friends and inspirations to one another, they created a unique community of unbridled creative expression and experimentation, and the works they made at the Slip would go on to change the course of American art. Peiffer pays homage to these artists and the impact their work had on the direction of late 20th-century art and film. This remarkable biography questions the very concept of a “group” or “movement,” as it spotlights the Slip's eclectic mix of gender and sexual orientation, abstraction and Pop, experimental film, painting, and sculpture, assemblage and textile works. Despite Coenties Slip's obscurity, the entire history of Manhattan was inscribed into its cobblestones—it was one of the first streets and central markets of the new colony, built by enslaved people, with revolutionary meetings at the tavern just down Pearl Street; named by Herman Melville in Moby Dick and site of the boom and bust of the city's maritime industry; and, in the artists' own time, a development battleground for people like Jane Jacobs and Robert Moses. I caught up with Peiffer, in the Fall of 2023 where she unpacked this group portrait, one of my favorite books of the year. Listen to hear Prudence Peiffer discuss the history of Coenties Slip.

Milfred and Hands highlight last week's discussion at the Edgewater Hotel about the future of State Street. Prominent landscape architect Ed Freer and Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway offer their visions as the city plans to test the concept of a true pedestrian mall on the bottom half of State Street this summer. Buses no longer roll down and crowd the three blocks closest to the UW-Madison campus. So the possibilities are ripe for a grand promenade and urban park similar to Pearl Street in Boulder, Colorado. Milfred and Hands play clips from and react to the Edgewater forum, including Freer's playful suggestion for yoga in the middle of the street.
Pizza makers, aka pizzaiolos, are notoriously particular about their ovens. Is it coal-fired? Or wood? How hot does it get? How fast? “It's the pursuit of perfection.” That's what one local pizza chef told reporter Helen Xu about the brick oven he had custom made for White Pie in Uptown. But another local pizza shop is going in a different direction entirely — electric! Producer Paul Karolyi joined Helen Xu for a visit to the newly all-electric Sexy Pizza on Pearl Street to taste some electric pizza and figure out why a small but growing number of local restaurants are dumping natural gas for electric ovens and stovetops. Paul mentioned this report on Denver's new electrification rules. For anyone who heard Helen's most recent appearance on the show and might be wondering if Sexy Pizza sources their cheese from Leprino Foods — like 85% of all pizza makers around the world — we asked, and they do! Sexy Pizza buys from Leprino's upscale brand Bacio, which offers mozzarella made with “a kiss” of buffalo milk. What do you think about electric pizza? Would an electric operation entice you? Or repulse you? We want to hear what you think about the electric future of local dining. Text or leave us a voicemail with your name and neighborhood, and you might hear it on the show: 720-500-5418 For even more news from around the city, subscribe to our morning newsletter Hey Denver at denver.citycast.fm. A young revolutionary once wrote that "...in the big lie, there is always a certain force of credibility." And with the insurgence of Marcus de Vogelaer's vehemently anti-patroon faction, his planted Provincial Secretary Jan Remunde wasted no time in teaming up with the increasingly embittered first Minister in order to effect that very big lie. And in short order, scored a decisive victory, by manipulating the dismissal of Walloon Pierre Minuit. And in the fallout of this upheaval, the Island now being called "the Manhattans" would be introduced to a young man who would eventually be the namesake of today's "Governor's Island" -- a 26-year old former clerk (who just happened to also have an uncle by the name of Kiliaen van Rensselaer.) Yes, this story is complicated. And as this inexperienced incoming "Governor" tacked east toward the Strand at Pearl Street, it was not the sight of the three active windmills that actually caught his attention...but rather the posture of a buxom German woman provocatively perched atop that dock, with her hazel eyes locked directly into his... And if nothing else, the one thing this paunchy Dutch boy knew for sure was that he was not in Amsterdam anymore. Episode 12 - Governor. Climb aboard. #historyiscool :)
As Mass slowly but surely becomes a hub for Hip-Hop, we always like to reach out to other towns outside of Boston for what sounds and feels right. Shout out to Brandon "Bedlam" Matthews of Killer Boombox/Showoff Marketing for this heads up because without him and what he's been putting together on Pearl Street, I'm not sure if we would have been hip to this artist right here. Shortly thereafter he dropped a project called "Trap>Rap" that we took a liking too and wanted to hear more of his story!Join Charlie MaSheen, KASH, & Gina Rodriguez as they sit down with the Leominster bred artist Shugg and go about his upbringing, his music, a very INTERESTING occurrence in Miami, & SO MUCH MORE!
