Visual material culture, such as art, and other multimodal forms can elicit responses, emotions, and opinions—human expressions, tied to temporal and cultural aesthetics. This program explores how creative mediums provide context for history beyond dates, and names, and figures.Partnering with Wilkinson College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Chapman University, this series will explore how photographs and film, specifically candid or vernacular documentation, captures history, the emotion of a moment before devastation, in the midst of tragedy and triumph, and in the common day-to-day of days long forgotten. Supported by the California Civil Liberties Public Education Program, a state-funded grant project of the California State Library, this series is designed to be a companion to the project, Through Internees Eyes: Japanese American Incarceration Before and After.Guest: Glenn KurtzHosts: Jon-Barrett IngelsProduced by: Past Forward

When the writer Glenn Kurtz stumbled upon an old home movie buried in his parents' closet in Florida, he inadvertently discovered a whole world that, tragically, had been nearly erased from history. Returning as a tourist in 1938 to the small village of Nasielsk outside Warsaw where he grew up, his grandfather David Kurtz brought with him a brand new 16mm Kodak movie camera. The three minutes of footage he shot there, which later turned up in the closet, are now among the only surviving moving images of any of the Polish villages destroyed in the Holocaust. Years later, the writer and critic Bianca Stigter (“Three Minutes – Thirteen Minutes – Thirty Minutes”) would see those three minutes posted on the website of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and embark on her own investigative journey. The result is the extraordinary documentary Three Minutes: A Lengthening. Joining Ken to discuss her film, which includes Kurtz' original footage, Bianca describes her creative “lengthening” process, which involved adding fascinating historical context and an almost microscopic level of detail. With very few markers, how were Glenn and Bianca able to identify people and places in the footage? Why was it so important to Bianca that viewers experience the footage actively rather than passively — and how did her filmmaking encourage that dynamic? And how did a key sequence in the film turn into an unforgettable memorial to over 150 people whose faces were captured by David Katz' camera? While nothing can bring back the Jewish community of Nasielsk, the efforts of first David, then Glenn, and now, Bianca, have at least ensured that their stories and faces will live on in our own collective memories. “Three Minutes: A Lengthening”, which is being released by Super LTD, can be seen in select theaters nationwide starting on August 26.   Hidden Gem: Rose Hobart   Follow on Twitter: @BStigter1 @topdocspod   The Presenting Sponsor of "Top Docs" is Netflix. THREE MINUTES - A LENGTHENING explores the human stories hidden within the celluloid. This powerful and emotionally compelling documentary presents a home movie shot by David Kurtz in 1938 in a Jewish town in Poland and tries to postpone its ending. The film is a haunting essay about history and memory. As long as we are watching, history is not over yet. The three minutes of footage, mostly in color, are the only moving images left of the Jewish inhabitants of Nasielsk before the Holocaust. Those precious minutes are examined moment by moment to unravel the human stories hidden in the celluloid. Different voices enhance the images: Glenn Kurtz, grandson of David Kurtz, and Maurice Chandler, who appears in the footage as a young boy. AcademyAward winning filmmaker Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave). BAFTA Award winning actress Helena Bonham Carter narrates the film. Director Bianca Stigter joins us for a conversation on her own journey in pursuit of the people behind a providential 16mm home movie, finding an invaluable eye witness from Nasielsk, and working with the son of Glenn Kurtz, David. A few years ago, writer Glenn Kurtz was conducting research for a novel when he came across an old video, recorded by his grandfather in 1938 in small, predominantly Jewish town in Poland. The video is vibrant - much is in color - and children jostle and laugh before the camera. The majority of those pictured would soon perish in the Holocaust and the other horrors that were inflicted in Poland during and after the Second World War. But some survived, and created new lives in the USA, Britain and Israel. Glenn spent four years researching every face shown in the video. He speaks to survivors, and tells their story in gripping detail in his book, Three Minutes in Poland, Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family Film. In our interview, we talk about Glenn's experience creating his book and meeting the survivors from his grandfather's home town. Author photo: Franziska Liepe. More at http://intrepidtimes.com

Author Glenn Kurtz discusses his research and extraordinary book, Three Minutes in Poland, Discovering a Lost World in a 1938 Family Film. “Both a memoir and an impressive feat of historical research, Three Minutes in Poland documents Kurtz’s four-year search for surviving Nasielskers, who he hopes can piece together a narrative from the fragments of film.... In a genre so often preoccupied with the recitation of horrors, Three Minutes in Poland is the rare work that seems more about people than about ghosts." —The Washington Post. "Best Book of 2014" by The New Yorker, The Boston Globe, and National Public Radio. Glenn Kurtz holds a PhD from Stanford University in German studies and comparative literature. He is also author of the highly acclaimed book, Practicing: A Musician's Return to Music.
