Online romance fraud and 'catfishing' – when someone pretends to be someone they're not - is a problem across the globe. It causes financial and emotional devastation, yet many people refuse to take it seriously. Datshiane Navanayagam speaks to two women from the UK and Sweden who have spent years rebuilding their lives after being targeted by men they met on dating sites.Pernilla Sjöholm is from Sweden. She was conned by the infamous Simon Leviev, the so-called "Tinder Swindler" and allegedly scammed out of the equivalent of $65,000. Pernilla is now an international speaker on AI, cybersecurity and fraud prevention. She also co-founded IDfier, working on digital identity verification, and is the author of Swindled Never After. Anna Rowe is pushing for greater support for romance fraud victims after her own experience of being conned. In 2015 she fell in love with a man who she had met online. After 14 months she discovered that the man she was in a relationship with, ‘Antony Ray' was using a fake identity and leading a double life which left Anna feeling emotionally and sexually violated. I have been watching a new series on Hulu on Romance scams - Hey Beautiful: Anatomy of a Romance Scam.  As I am watching this series it reminds me of teh Tinder Swindler. What perplexes me is that people are afraid to meet in person, over a quick cofee or drink at a public place but there are enough people in the world that are willing to "fall" for someone online and never meeting that person or havinga  video chat with that person and then agree to send that person money - Seriously? Yes I have had people ask me to send them gas money to meet (they always start off with a small amount to send them), have aksed me to sign onto other sites, or other APPS like WhatsApp and I never do, once they ask I immediatley block abnd repoort them and YOU should do the same.Here is more information on this scam and where youy can report this to the authorites:Romance scams involve criminals creating fake online identities to gain victims' trust and affection, ultimately manipulating them into sending money, cryptocurrency, or personal information. These scammers often operate on dating apps and social media, creating "too good to be true" scenarios and avoiding in-person meetings. [1, 2, 3, 4]Common Red Flags & TacticsRapid Affection: Scammers profess love quickly, aiming to establish a deep emotional connection early.The "Never Meet" Promise: They create elaborate excuses (e.g., working on oil rigs, military, doctor, international projects) to avoid meeting in person.Requests for Funds: Common excuses for needing money include, medical emergencies, hospital bills, travel expenses, or investment opportunities, particularly in cryptocurrency.Using Fake Photos/AI: Scammers may use AI-generated images or stolen photos to build their profile.Steps to Take If TargetedStop All Contact: Cease communication immediately.Report the Scam: File a complaint with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.Notify Platforms: Report the profile to the social media site or dating app used.Contact Financial Institutions: Alert your bank to secure accounts and try to stop transactions.Use Reverse Image Search: Search profile pictures to see if they belong to someone else.

I'm surprised that the police are still allowing this to happen - especially now that it's confirmed the documentary will appear on a platform as globally dominant as Netflix. Just think about how many people around the world will watch this. Imagine if the series takes off and becomes popular in the same way some true crime stories on Netflix do - think The Tinder Swindler. What happened after you watched that? Or after The Menendez Brothers documentary, or docudramas like Apple Cider Vinegar? You started Googling, didn't you? I know I did. What do we think people around the world are going to find when they start googling the Marokopa kids? There is a real chance they could come across suppressed information. And given how difficult it is to enforce suppression laws overseas, what do we think some of those global websites are going to do? There has to be a risk that some publishers abroad will release that suppressed material. To me, this feels like rolling the dice - big time - on information surfacing in a way New Zealand law simply can't control. If that happens, it could permanently limit these children's ability to live lives that aren't haunted by stories about what happened in the bush. That's why I'm so surprised the police aren't just going along with this documentary but are reportedly actively supporting it. Let's be clear - without police cooperation, this documentary would almost certainly struggle to be produced at the standard Netflix requires. That makes this a very big risk for the police - and I don't understand why they're taking it. Interview with Vanbur - In this episode of Sync Music Matters I'm chatting to Vanbur aka Jessica Jones and Tim Morrish. We'll be chatting about their work on One Day, the Netflix adaptation of the novel by David Nichols which interestingly, seems to resemble their story. We'll also be digging into their creative process, the power of collaborating and the liberating power of restricting yourself creatively. We also chat Jaffa cakes... again! Vanbur is the artist project of composers Jessica Jones and Tim Morrish. Their sound can best be described as ethereal vocals floating on a bed of contemporary and haunting cinematic score.  They recently worked alongside Anne Nikitin on the score for Netflix's One Day and also had a number of their Vanbur  tracks featured as part of the soundtrack.  Independently they've worked on shows like the long running comedy drama series Brassic, Netflix's true crime show American Nightmare, Tinder Swindler and Jimmy Saville: A british Horror Story They are also working on a new album due out at the end of 2025. She decided to get on Tinder and she matched with a handsome 28 year old local named Gable Tostee. Their date started off pretty typical but sadly hours later it would end in tragedy.
