The whitetail rut is just around the corner, and this week we speak with two of the nation's most successful DIY buck hunters about how to get mature whitetails in bow range! Tethrd's John Eberhart and Greg Godfrey have successfully hunted bucks in more than 20 states and recently published the Ultimate Guide to DIY Bucks, a comprehensive, three-volume book that covers everything you need to know to punch more tags. 

Last fall, Tethrd invited 12 experienced saddle hunters to its first-ever Huntin' Camp, a weeklong, DIY, deer hunt that forced participants to hit the ground running on a large tract of Indiana forest none had ever visited before. By week's end, an incredible six of the 12 hunters had put a buck on the ground — a testament to the effectiveness of saddle-hunting tactics. Plus some of the Tethrd crew tagged along. And, the Ranch Fairy showed up. So we essentially got together and did a little round table with Greg Godfrey, Jared Shaffer, Carl Kossuth, Shane, Troy aka Ranch Fairy, Dylan Hazen, who was filming for Tethrd, as well as myself. We talked about our experience thus far, broadhead and arrow setups along with some ad-hoc broadhead testing on a deer carcass, cyber scouting, North Dakota laws, and lessons learned on the trip. We recorded outside, so there is a little bit of wind noise, but not too bad. If you've listened long enough you know we love to experiment! We try all sorts of creative things when it comes to habitat and food plots. Hunting strategy is no different and for this year we are getting to tree saddles. There has been a buzz around hunting from saddles for the past few seasons. After looking into the system we connected with good friend Greg Godfrey of Tethrd and got our hands on these awesome pieces of equipment. It doesn't take long to figure out this system has extreme benefits to the open-minded hunter. This is not just a public land hunting setup. Each and everyone can recount times during past seasons when food sources change rapidly and you always seem to be one step behind the deer movement. This seems to happen often when acorns drop, or cattle get moved across a farm, or even in crop country when fields are harvested. It can be tough to be consistently setup for each and every pattern shift. The arborists are probably the first to harness the power of the tree harness, but what about the rock climbing community? According to Greg Godfrey from the tree harness company Tethrd, we need to give credit to each. And that's pretty much how his company got its roots - it's a deer hunter meets arborist meets rock climber kind of story. Greg says that due to the demand to pack lighter to get to your favorite deer hunting spot without sacrificing safety or the ability to hunt from a tree, Tethrd was born. Tethrd isn't the first tree harness company, but they are perhaps the first to focus on this method of hunting that's been around for quite a while and really make some innovative advancements. The event brought people from all over the country who share a similar passion for hunting out of saddles. While one of the main attractions was hog hunting on the base, there was a tremendous amount of knowledge being shared right at camp. Nearly constant demos on tree climbing methods and platform options were being showcased. The group goes in-depth on their experience at Saddlepalooza as well as thoughts on their favorite climbing methods and gear from the event. There were definitely some opinions that have been swayed after being able to collaborate with several like minded people at the same time.
