In today’s digital, media-driven landscape, it has become tougher to build genuine social connections with others, especially in the workplace. Scripps Interactive Networks and HGTV Co-Founder Susan Packard, and author of Fully Human, created EQ Fitness (a method to harness emotional intelligence) to address this challenge. She shared her solution at a DEC meeting Wednesday. According to Packard, more than 40 million people suffer from social anxiety disorder and related mental illnesses. To address this national health crisis, she detailed the importance of understanding one’s internal and external emotions and how it impacts total wellness. Positive emotions, said Packard, like hope, excitement, fulfillment and passion lead to a healthier mental well-being. She also introduced her three-step process in practicing EQ Fitness: first with willingness, then leading into trust and adopting a “we” workplace mindset. She tasked meeting attendees to utilize the EQ Fitness method to attain better work relationships and company culture. -- Speaker: Susan Packard Co-Founder, Scripps Interactive Networks & HGTV Author, Fully Human   Presiding Officer: Carolyn Cassin President & CEO, Michigan Women Forward

My friend and colleague Susan Packard recently sent me a copy of her new book Fully Human. My hope is that it reaches a larger audience than her first work New Rules of the Game, which was written primarily, although not exclusively for women. Her book is subtitled, 3 Steps to Grow Your Emotional Fitness in Work, Leadership, and Life. This reminded me of a sentence in my Personal Leadership Philosophy: At the end of each day, key questions include “Did I do my best? -- At work, at home, and at life.” Where did this focus on Emotional Intelligence come from? It’s likely this started with Daniel Goleman’s groundbreaking work Emotional Intelligence. We can think of Susan Packard’s work, as well as Dan Pink’s breakthrough book Drive and Mark Crowley’s wonderful Lead From the Heart, as how-to guides. Goleman’s research introduced us to Emotional Intelligence, and there are many worthy books that inform us how to put Emotional Intelligence, or E.Q, into action, and showcase the benefits of doing so. This also helps us cross barriers between generations, as Kelly and Bobby Riggs shared with us in Counter Mentor Leadership. Do you still think primarily about performance and potential solely based on I.Q? If you do, you’re not alone. Consider a deeper dive into E.Q. Add some new leadership tools to your toolbox. Leaders Promote Emotional Intelligence.

We all know what emotional intelligence is for the most part, I think, but what about emotional fitness? We're talking to Susan Packard. She's the author of Fully Human: Steps to Grow Your Emotional Fitness in Work, Leadership, and Life. It comes out this month. Susan is a pretty big deal. You may know her by the brands that she has built. Most notably, she helped to build TV brands like CNBC and the Food Network. She was the second employee and COO of HGTV, which is my favorite channel. Later, they sold HGTV for $15 billion in 2018. Susan's career has now led her to thought leadership, speaking, writing. Her latest book again is called Fully Human. In it, she shares insights that she gained during her years at places like HGTV. Susan believes there's a gap between what we know about emotional intelligence and how we live. In this book, she offers invaluable tools that bridge that gap. We talk about her upbringing in Detroit, managing money in her marriage and navigating very male-dominated industries as a leader and executive. To learn more about Susan, please visit https://susanpackard.com/. You can follow her on Instagram @susanpackard and on Twitter @PackardSusan.
