Did you know that 25% of young adults meet the definition for substance abuse disorder? In a culture fueled by social media where partying and overdoing just about everything is considered the norm, it's no shock that addiction is a huge problem for the people who will become our future leaders. The stigma surrounding substance abuse disorder can be brutally difficult for anyone recovering, and for young people and their parents, it raises very specific challenges. This week, I am honored to welcome my friend, Susan Packard, back to the table. Susan is a co-founder of HGTV and is in long-term recovery. She speaks about her own recovery, why it was so important to her as an executive, and how the disease of “more” swirls around executives in many ways. Her latest book, The Little Book of College Sobriety, was released this past June. It captures the real-world stories of college students who speak openly about their addiction and their road to recovery. Sobriety is best done in a slow cooker, which means it is done intentionally and with great care one day at a time. For those recovering from substance use disorder and attending college and living on campus, it is like being in an environment that can only be described as their own personal Sodom and Gomorrah. Temptations are everywhere and they dig deep, every day.. It is vital for the recovery community to embrace these young people and help them on their path to true freedom, wellness and healing. Here's what we connect on: The moment Susan truly recognized she had a problem with alcohol (2:40) The importance of empowering and encouraging young sober people (15:43) How there is plenty for us to learn from these college students who have truly been brought to their knees (21:05) Tools that are actually helping college students stay sober while in school (27:02) The effort towards erasing the stigma around recovery in the workplace (31:22) Thank you so much for saving a seat for us this week! We’ve got to work on ourselves before we can work on anybody else. As leaders, emotional intelligence is something we constantly have to work on and improve upon. Today’s guest dives into how you can become emotionally fit in work, leadership, and life. Susan Packard is the author of two books, including her most recent book, Fully Human. Throughout her career, Susan has had her hand in developing long-lasting TV brands like Food Network and CNBC, and she built HGTV into a $15 billion business when she was COO for the organization. Today, she mentors both men and women who are curious about their promise and wanting to grow their potential. In Susan’s book, Fully Human, she interviewed a wide range of leaders to get into their heads and really find out what makes successful people tick. Susan found out that it takes some time to build emotional intelligence. In Western culture, people don’t really stop to ask themselves what they want out of their life; instead, they are so laser-focused on producing, doing, and keeping busy, even if it’s to their detriment. A leader with a good emotional IQ knows when to give their employees a break and doesn’t try to demand too much of their time away from home. Susan shares a story from her HGTV days. She was working late to deliver some important budget-related documents when she noticed that there was a big financial mistake in her work. At prior careers, this mistake would have meant Susan would have been reprimanded in some way, but not at HGTV. When Susan told the CFO about the mistake at 12 a.m., he told her that they would both come into the office early that morning, look it over together, and fix it together before sending it off. The calmness in the CFO’s approach made Susan feel respected and trusted. A leader with emotional intelligence knows when it’s important to work together and not punish people for being honest. Leaders don't live on islands. They grow best in communities of leaders who invest in them. Susan Packard, the cofounder of Scripps Network Interactive (and speaker at our upcoming Leadercast Women event in October), attributes her success to examples she could follow, tools she could use, and people she could inspire. She isn't an interior designer or a gardener, but was instrumental in establishing HGTV. She isn't a financial guru, but was the backbone of the growth of CNBC. For Susan, it wasn't about what organization she was leading, but the people she could lead. “You get a team of people together that can help you to make something successful,” she said.

What has your team learned lately about growing and scaling a business? What have they learned outside of your industry? A team that is continuously learning and improving is important if you’re scaling. Today’s show shares a preview of some of the topics that were discussed at the Scaling Up Summit to help you become a better leader and entrepreneur! The whole idea behind these summits is to develop yourself. Verne notes that Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates, Mark Cuban are all voracious readers; they’re constantly trying to better themselves. As a Mckinsey report notes, the competitive weapon used to be cheap labor, but now it is smart talent. The challenge is, there are 11,000 business books released per year and it’s become a job, almost, to curate what’s good and what’s not. This is why Verne and his team formed the Scaling Up summit where twice a year you can go and consume 12+ books worth of knowledge in 48 hours. Who will be speaking at the summit this May 21-22 in Atlanta, Ga? Verne is excited to announce Henry McGovern, who scaled from opening the first pizza shop in Poland to 48,000 thousand employees. Steve Martin will also be there, he is Robert Cialdini’s partner and is a master at understanding influence and persuasion. The summit will also have Denise Lee Yohn, who is a brand expert and knows how to elevate your brand and have your culture be aligned with the brand. Susan Packard will be speaking at the summit, she is the Founder of HGTV and will be there to discuss actionable ways to include EQ in the workplace. There’s also a ton of fun incorporated into these events as well. There will be a red carpet event along with some great live bands performing plus some insightful Q&A sessions with the speakers. And on May 23rd, there will also be a user conference for those who would like to take the strategies they’ve learned days prior and apply them with a more hands-on approach. This is a Closer Look at Susan Packard. She was on the startup teams for HBO and CNBC and the cofounder of HGTV and Scripps Networks Interactive, which became one of the fastest growing cable networks in television history. In 2008 she was inducted into the Cable Hall of Fame. She is the author of the bestseller, “New Rules of the Game: 10 Strategies for Women in the Workplace.” Susan Packard joins former SEC chairman Arthur Levitt to talk about her new book, “Fully Human: 3 Steps to Grow Your Emotional Fitness. It’s been 25 years since Daniel Golman introduced us to “Emotional Intelligence,” or “EQ,” and “Fully Human” sets out to bring EQ current for the realities of the new workplace Host: Arthur Levitt Producer: Madena Parwana
My friend and colleague Susan Packard recently sent me a copy of her new book Fully Human. My hope is that it reaches a larger audience than her first work New Rules of the Game, which was written primarily, although not exclusively for women. Her book is subtitled, 3 Steps to Grow Your Emotional Fitness in Work, Leadership, and Life. This reminded me of a sentence in my Personal Leadership Philosophy: At the end of each day, key questions include “Did I do my best? -- At work, at home, and at life.” Where did this focus on Emotional Intelligence come from? It’s likely this started with Daniel Goleman’s groundbreaking work Emotional Intelligence. We can think of Susan Packard’s work, as well as Dan Pink’s breakthrough book Drive and Mark Crowley’s wonderful Lead From the Heart, as how-to guides. Goleman’s research introduced us to Emotional Intelligence, and there are many worthy books that inform us how to put Emotional Intelligence, or E.Q, into action, and showcase the benefits of doing so. This also helps us cross barriers between generations, as Kelly and Bobby Riggs shared with us in Counter Mentor Leadership. Do you still think primarily about performance and potential solely based on I.Q? If you do, you’re not alone. Consider a deeper dive into E.Q. Add some new leadership tools to your toolbox. Leaders Promote Emotional Intelligence.
She was co-founder of Home and Garden Television and helped shape the movement of content at HGTV, CNBC and The Food Network. Susan Packard now writes, speaks and coaches men and women in business. Her new book is FULLY HUMAN -3 STEPS TO GROW YOUR EMOTIONAL FITNESS IN WORK, LEADERSHIP, AND LIFE We chat about emotional fitness, creativity, why its all blue skies for content creators and the changing landscape of D2C media.

She's the author of Fully Human: Steps to Grow Your Emotional Fitness in Work, Leadership, and Life. It comes out this month. Susan is a pretty big deal. Her latest book again is called Fully Human. In it, she shares insights that she gained during her years at places like HGTV.
