Len Ferman's new book, The 1973 Mets - You've Got to Believe, is a day to day saga about a Mets team that that rallied from last place with a 61-71 record on August 31 to win the National League East with an 82-79 record. The Eastern Division race that year saw five teams still in the hunt for the title in the season's final week. In the end, the Mets won the title outright on the season's final day with just 5 games separating the champs from the fifth place Chicago Cubs. The Mets shocked the 99-win Cincinnati Reds in the five-game NL Championship series then stretched the Oakland A's, the defending World Series champs, to seven games before coming up short. The team featured the great Willie Mays in his final season and future Hall of Famer Tom Seaver, the 1973 NL Cy Young Award winner. What a way to wrap up 2024! Nothing like having a conversation with a member of the 1986 Miracle Mets and a WORLD SERIES CHAMPION. WALLY BACKMAN is our guest on this episode of The Approach Shot and yes, he was part of the team that broke the Red Sox faithful's hearts. He too, watched Mookie Wilson's ball go under Bill Buckner's glove, but has a different perspective on that play and others. He also gave back so much to the game he loves by managing in the Minor Leagues and was able to impart wisdom and fire in his players. That love and fire also exist in his golf game and we enjoyed every second of our conversation with WALLY BACKMAN! Have a listen!

Thanks to the expansion teams, 1969 saw the AL and NL both split into two divisions. That resulted in the first divisional championship games ahead of the World Series. In the National League the Atlanta Braves picked up the first NL West pennant, and faced an unexpected opponent in the NLCS. For the first seven years of the Mets, this expansion team never climbed higher than ninth place, and in five of the seven years lost more than 100 games each season. 1969 was the eighth year of the Mets, and they went on a tear that saw a 100-62 record and the top spot in the NL East with a 9-1 record to close out the season. With two wins on the road, the Mets return to Shea Stadium and the first chance to win the first NLDS. We join Bob Murphy, Lindsay Nelson, and Ralph Kiner for the NY Mets Baseball network. You can find the boxscore here. This game was played on October 6th, 1969. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/classicbaseballradio/message

He also shares stories about baseball icons including Willie Mays, Steve Carlton, and Pete Rose.
Baseball and BBQ Episode #154 is a Jones-filled episode as we welcome Cleon Jones of the 1969 World Series Champion Miracle Mets and BBQ Master Judge, Bill Jones Cleon Jones is a beloved figure in New York sports history. Wearing #21 and playing left field; it was Jones who caught the final out of the 1969 World Series which would earn the New York Mets their first championship, in which they would always be known as The Miracle Mets. Cleon discusses playing in New York, his dear friend, Tommie Agee, growing up in Mobile, Alabama, and so many other fascinating stories. Speaking with Cleon was an absolute treat, and we hope listening to him will be as well. Bill has judged more than 250 contests. He has many stories to tell, and not all of them involve barbecue. The barbecue community is filled with very special people, and we lucked out that Bill joined us to give us a look behind the scenes. What do judges like to eat after they are stuffed full of BBQ? A NEW YORK METS SHOW WITH FRANCHISE ICONS ED KRANEPOOL AND JAY HOOK. Some hot stove nostalgia with two players who hold distinct places in Mets history. Kranepool is the longest tenured player in team history, spending his entire 18-year career with Mets, and holds the franchise record for most games played. He's the only player who was there from the original Amazin's of Casey Stengel, through the Miracle Mets of ‘69, and the back-from-the-dead pennant winning season of ‘73. Hook was the very first winning pitcher in Mets history with a complete game five-hitter against the Pittsburgh Pirates after the team lost its first nine games. He shares his memories of Casey, the Polo Grounds, Marvelous Marv Throneberry, and the record-setting losing season of 1962. www.sportsracx.com/

It's the 60th year of New York Mets baseball, and we celebrate this week with a look back at the transformational multipurpose facility they called home for 45 seasons - including three of the club's four NL pennants and its only two World Series championships - Shea Stadium. Matthew Silverman (Shea Stadium Remembered: The Mets, The Jets, and Beatlemania) takes us back to the origin story behind the conceptually named "Flushing Meadow Park Municipal Stadium" - which began almost immediately after the Dodgers' and Giants' relocation to California in 1958 as a lure for a new expansion franchise to replace them. Through the combined political efforts of New York City mayor Robert Wagner, city urban planning power broker Robert Moses, and Continental League founder (and future stadium namesake) William Shea, the Queens-based facility opened in 1964 as the mutual home of not only the NL expansion Mets, but also the newly reincarnated AFL football New York Jets (née Titans). We delve into more than four decades of Shea memories, including the 1969 "Miracle Mets," the Jets' 1968 AFL Championship, Bill Buckner's ill-fated error in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series, and the insane year of 1975 - when the AL Yankees and football Giants also called the stadium home. And, of course, the iconic first stop on the Beatles' 1965 tour of North America - the biggest-ever grossing concert of the era that became synonymous with "Beatlemania."
The Sixties still represents one of the most tumultuous times in American history, but 1969 in particular had its share of news events that spanned the entire spectrum, particularly the sports highs... that is, if you were a New York fan. That '69 year started with Joe Namath and the Jets winning Super Bowl III, and it culminated with the New York Mets winning the franchise's first World Series title. One of the key members of that Mets club, outfielder Ron Swoboda, joins the latest "Stories with Street CRed" to discuss his baseball career and beyond. Swoboda opines on playing for Hall of Famer Gil Hodges, and alongside Mets teammates like Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver. But Swoboda also reflects on the world events that unfolded during his Mets' tenure, ending his career in pinstripes with the Yankees, and his post-baseball life in New Orleans.
Zach, Jack, and Andrew discuss the New York Mets Old Timers' Day, controversy over the retirement of Keith Hernandez's number 17, the Miracle Mets in Game 3 of the 1969 World Series, and the Sweet Sixteen for 2021 LOOGY Album of the Year.
John Dickinson and Ryan Covay start the show talking about the Giants and how their Magic number is 2. JD said if the Giants sweep this series then they will finish with 108 wins, they would tie the 1975 " Big Red Machine" Reds & the 1986 "Miracle" Mets. If this team wins it all, are they the greatest Giants team ever?

Ron Swoboda has been asked “How long will you keep living off that catch?” His answer: “How long have I got?” The Game Four catch in the '69 series was but one of many feats that would forever brand that legendary team the “Miracle Mets” with Rocky's bat helping lead the way to the most unlikely of championships. Ron has a lot to say as he talks being a legendary Met, his two decades as a sportscaster, and life after the miracle in this All-Star edition of The Art Shamsky Podcast.
One of the greatest seasons by one of the unlikeliest teams ever. Tom tells Josh about the Miracle Mets, how they came about due to the westward (??) expansion of baseball, how they built a roster in an era when expansion teams were squeezed (including the origin of the band name "Yo La Tengo"), and the details of their unexpected run to a championship. We're still figuring out how to do this, so apologies for how raw this is. Josh didn't properly connect his mic this episode, but Tom does most of the talking this episode. The New York Metropolitans were the laughing stock of MLB in the 1960s. In 1962, their first season of play, the team set a modern record with 120 losses and the succeeding six years were not much better. However, among those losing seasons, important pieces were acquired by the team which allowed for the sudden success of the 1969 season. Managed by Gil Hodges and led by pitchers Tom Seaver and Jerry Koosman, the Mets fortunes completely changed in 1969, leading to what many refer to as a miracle.
