Of course we talk about the many shows that have followed, even to this very day. I fanboy a little bit about when I first discovered Roger, and he lets me plat my favorite song of his. Then we talk about his relationship with time, and time as a concept itself. Finally, we do a deep dive into his newest album and accompanying book. The album is called 'Sound Bytes', and the book is called 'Curious Sounds'. Spoiler alert... Roger lets me play my favorite song from the new album! Flowing East and West: The Perfectly Imperfect Journey to a Fulfilled Life

It is not a recipe she would recommend, but Fanny Slater mixed one part alcohol, one part low self esteem, a dash of fame, and a sprinkle of insecurity, and ultimately found herself spiraling down a tunnel headed straight for rock bottom.  Luckily Fanny also had a heap of support and love from friends and family which helped her when she needed it most.  This is a story about reinvention from the winner of a cooking contest on the Rachel Ray show to an aspiring sobriety mentor. Hers is a story about finding herself, after almost losing everything.     Bio: Fanny Slater has food flowing through her genes. Her mom founded the nationally acclaimed bakery business Rachel's Brownies in 1975, and together—her parents created an enormously successful corporation that would live on for decades. Fanny grew up in Raleigh where, at age four, she began her home-taught kitchen apprenticeship when her dad pulled up a chair next to the stove and handed her a spatula. She worked in restaurants and prep kitchens to receive culinary exposure, but was equally drawn to performing arts. At twenty-five, Fanny moved to Hollywood, California to pursue acting and improv training with the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre in Los Angeles. Several years later, she followed her stomach back to the east coast to open her own catering company. She moved to Wilmington, North Carolina in 2012. In 2014, she beat out nearly 1,000 other hopefuls from across the country who entered Rachael Ray's Great American Cookbook Competition. Fanny won the grand prize of a publishing contract under Rachael's imprint, and Simon & Schuster published her cookbook, Orange, Lavender & Figs: Deliciously Different Recipes from a Passionate Eater, in 2016. In the following years, Fanny co-hosted the Food Network series, Kitchen Sink and became a regular on Cooking Channel's longtime popular series, Best Thing I Ever Ate.  In 2020, Fanny was living in Illinois with her husband when her longtime issues with alcohol came to a head. Within one year, she would move back to North Carolina, get a divorce, come out of the closet, and attend a 40-day rehab program. Today, Fanny is 3+ years sober and living near the beach in Wilmington with her girlfriend, two dogs, and a cat. She works as a food and beverage writer specializing in recipe development, food photography, and content creation for social media. As of recent, Fanny has pivoted her focus towards being a sobriety enthusiast who encourages others to speak up about their struggles. She uses her Instagram platform @fannyslater to bluntly share her journey of going from a self-destructive addict to an advocate for mental health, recovery, and self-love.

I'm certain that all of you LOVE a cup of tea or coffee in the morning, and our first guest is brewing up a great start to your day with her business, The Rose Room Cafe. The coffee and baked goods come with a lot of love, as Jess Sabine and her staff make freshly-baked pastries and other foods from scratch to accompany your cup-o-joe (or tea). The love doesn't end there--The Rose Room Cafe has created a space for the community to get together, hosting events which include first Fridays, private parties, and so much more! So, if this sounds like your cup of tea ;) then make The Rose Room Cafe part of your next destination! (https://www.theroseroomcafe.com)From Coffee to Bagels...I chat with Managing Partner of Bagels & Co., Mike Marsh. Mike is very invested in what Bagels & Co. has to offer, including the lengthy list of cream cheeses crafted to compliment their abundantly large bagels of your dreams. New York arguably has the best bagels this side of the world, but theirs can give New Yorkers a run for their money, since they modeled their bagels to be just like that. Now, add the fact that every bagel is lovingly seasoned -- on all sides of them -- theirs rises above the rest. Now, that fact is something I can attest to! (https://www.thebagelsandco.com)Speaking of taking a bite out of something...Shelby Fahrni, who owns The Cooking Studio located in Telford, PA, began her culinary journey at the ripe old age of 4. Yes, you read that correctly. At 4 years old the culinary bug bit her and she's been cooking ever since. And something she's resumed since then is to teach others how to create delicious meals at home from scratch. Of course you'll need to take one of her classes first, and come hungry because after all that learning you and your classmates can sit down to enjoy your creations family-style! So if you're looking for something fun to do as a family, with friends, or even go solo--check out The Cooking Studio! (https://lecookingstudio.com)

In combination with wanting to cook, Stephen had always wanted to have his own Youtube channel.  So, during the long, boring days of Covid he decided that he would make one.  The, just a couple of years later, he joined the FFA and needed a supervised agricultural experience.  Viola!, the cooking channel fit perfectly, and it became his SAE!

“When I started 25 years ago doing this, there was a huge disparity between leadership roles of Latinos in kitchens.”   Chef Aarón Sánchez        Because restaurants are so prolific across the United States, there are many, many jobs in kitchen service, but historically an under-representation of Latinos in chef and managerial positions. Out of the almost 150,000 chefs currently employed in the United States, 60% are white, followed by Latino chefs at 17%.   Chef Aarón Sánchez– who you may recognize as the award-winning chef/owner of Johnny Sánchez in New Orleans, or from culinary TV shows such as FOX's MasterChef, Food Network's Chopped, and Cooking Channel's Taco Trip– knows this from personal experience.    When Chef Aarón started in the restaurant industry 25 years ago, he saw the huge disparity between leadership roles of Latinos in kitchens and thought through what needed to change in order to remove barriers and excuses. In 2016, he founded the Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund to begin closing that diversity gap, offering impactful opportunities that allow Latino youth to move up and be taken seriously.   The Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund began with Chef Aarón and his friends hosting dinners and parties to raise money to fund scholarships for culinary education. The program grew and became more formalized, and in 2022 the Fund formed a partnership with the Emeril Lagasse Foundation, a nationwide program focused on developing and supporting youth; Jennifer Killian was brought on board as Director.   As of 2023, the Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund has awarded almost $1 million in scholarships to 14 individuals. Its stated mission is to uplift the lives of Latino youth across America through food, doing so through three pillars: Culinary Arts Education, Mentorship, and Human Services. “His goal is to help uplift these young Latinos who have the vision to chase a culinary dream, because the kitchen leadership is not as diversified as it should be at this day and age.”   First, the Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund provides scholarships to send young Latinos to award-winning culinary arts education programs in New York City. After they've learned foundational skills and mastered the administrative portions of their curriculum, students spend time with food leaders within different sectors to better define what arena of the food service industry they want to go into, and internships are tailored to their strengths and interests.    Chef Aarón is the primary mentor, but students are encouraged to make a list of people that they admire and would like to learn from. Chef Aarón and Jennifer then work to facilitate those mentoring relationships.    Human services work is the newest arm of the Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund, giving money through grant programs that improve food access, nutrition education, and crisis feeding initiatives. The first human services grant, in conjunction with Hispanic Heritage Month, supported a California school system with a large number of parents working in agriculture. They had been awarded a commercial refrigeration unit through a grant to help provide produce, dairy and meats to students, but lacked the funding to have it professionally installed. The Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund granted gap funding for the installation, helping to triple the amount of produce that these children will be able to access.  “This is the type of work that we would like to do more of as we continue to grow. And of course, that's all based on fundraising. The more we can bring in, the more we can give and the more lives we can change.” Jennifer Killian (22:03-22:14) The Aarón Sánchez Impact Fund welcomes all donations to help support its mission, as well as opportunities to spread its message. No donation is without impact!   You can find out more about the fund at aaronsanchezimpactfund.com, and learn more about Chef Aarón (including the podcast he hosts with his mother, Cooking In Mexican From A to Z) at chefaaronsanchez.com.   How to get involved   Join The Produce Moms Group on Facebook and continue the discussion every week!  Reach out to us - we'd love to hear more about where you are in life and business! Things are getting even more delicious as we continue with the “Feeding These People” series here on the For The Love Podcast, as we celebrate the launch of Jen's dream project - her very first cookbook! And like we need an excuse to talk about food (we don't) so pardon us as we revel in all the foodie-loving goodness our guest this week brings us through her oh-so-delectable, highly followed Instagram channel. We've got Half Baked Harvest's Tieghan Gerard with us this week and we couldn't be more excited (and a little hungry). Tieghan, much like Jen, got her start in the world of blogging way back in 2012 and was just a natural to move her food thoughts and creations over to Instagram (to the tune of 4.7M followers), and subsequently began appearing on outlets like the Cooking Channel, Food Network, HGTV and more. Tieghan confesses to us, as much as she loves cooking (which came from experimentation as a kid, and watching a lot of Rachael Ray) she loves styling the things she cooks even more. And if you get a look at Half Baked Harvest on the socials, you'll understand why. From her point of view on food, to her flavor profiles, to how she showcases her beautiful creations, you'll see her talent–but rejoice in the fact that even though her recipes *look* elevated, they are made for people who might not have a chef's touch in the kitchen.  We were stunned to find out that she wrote AND styled her last three cookbooks (after last week's episode, where we had Jen's entire cookbook team describing their work, we marvel at how she does it all). We also love the moments when Tieghan discovers Jen is southern and their hand-clapping delight that they both adore spicy foods (more jalapenos, please) and their aside about how wonderful it is to get to do what you love for a living. Stick around for the end as Tieghan shares her favorite (and easy) go-to recipe that everyone needs for their fall menus.  * * * Thank you to our sponsors!
