Hear from Lord Adair Turner, Chair of the Energy Transitions Commission, as we explore the shortcomings of nationally determined contributions and how they might be improved. Nationally determined contributions, or NDCs, are a bit like transition plans for countries, in that they set out what a country plans to do in order to meet the ambitions of the Paris Agreement. However, NDCs are voluntary, and collectively they don't currently have us on track to limit global warming to less than 2 degrees, let alone the more ambitious target of 1.5 degrees. Today's guest believes that this is a problem, as NDCs are failing to provide a clear direction for action. The less clarity there is about policy direction and ambition, the less likely markets will respond to policy signals to deliver the investment required for the transition. That's why in this episode, we examine: What are the shortcomings in countries' NDCs and how they can be addressed? Why NDCs don't currently reflect the rapid technological progress that is already being made across sectors; and How geopolitics is influencing the transition and the challenges facing climate finance. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's 'Bad Boys: Ride or Die' Dominates Summer Box Office with $104.6 Million As I predicted, Black folks have once again saved the summer box office. Will Smith and Martin Lawrence's "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" came in with $104.6 million for the global purse. Forget the streaming wars, Will and Martin are doing their part to get butts back in the theater seats. The Academy Award-winner surprised a lot of people too over in South Central L.A. when he snuck into the Cinemark Baldwin Hills Theater. Fans were totally blown away when they realized, oh, Will was watching with them? Well, I have to say, this is the Black theater where folks get loud when they love a movie, so I am sure a good time was had by all. And congratulations to Will and Martin. Pulling this off once again. Howard University Revokes Sean ‘Diddy' Combs' Honorary Degree Amid Assault Allegations Howard University says no, no, and just no. On Friday, the DC-based university announced it was revoking the honorary degree awarded to Sean "Diddy" Combs in 2014. That decision follows, of course, the release of that horrific video that shows Combs attacking his ex-girlfriend, Cassie Ventura. The university's board of trustees voted unanimously to rescind the degree, citing behavior that's just fundamentally incompatible with Howard University's core values and beliefs. In addition to revoking the honorary degree, the trustee's statement noted that Howard would be terminating that 2016 gift agreement with Combs, and they are disbanding the scholarship in his name. They are also returning his $1 million contribution. I'm sure he's going to need that money anyway for his legal fees. There is some controversy surrounding President Joe Biden's upcoming commencement address at Morehouse College. On May 19, he will speak during the graduation ceremony, but a faction of Morehouse facility is rethinking the decision to award him an honorary degree. Critics point to Biden's policies on policing, mass incarceration, and his recent remarks on student protests. They have also highlighted his handling of the Gaza conflict, where his support for Israel has sparked significant debate and protest encampments across the country. In contrast, supporters cite his achievements, such as reducing Black child poverty and appointing the first African American woman to the Supreme Court. The faculty's dissatisfaction led to a call for a vote on this honorary degree, set for Thursday, just days before the commencement. The vote follows a procedural oversight as faculty approval is traditionally sought in September. The final decision on the degree rests with Morehouse's Board of Trustees after the faculty vote.
