What's in a game?  Specifically, the MLB game played on May 6, 2000, between the Tampa Bay Devil Rays and the Boston Red Sox which featured a pitchers' duel with Pedro Martinez and Steve Trachsel.  We answer that question as we speak with Bob Ryan, Bill Chuck, and Steve Trachsel.  Not to be outdone, the second half of the show features an interview with The Grill Dads which will make you laugh and want to cook, all at the same time. Bob Ryan was a spectator at the game and it is his scorecard which appears in the book he co-authored with Bill Chuck, In Scoring Position:  40 Years of a Baseball Love Affair, that sparked the idea of a discussion on this particularly incredible game.  Ryan is a member of five Halls of Fame for his sportswriting.  In addition, he is a recipient of the Associated Press sports editor's Red Smith Award "For Extended Meritorious Labor in the Art of Sports Journalism," and the PEN Award "For Literary Excellence in Sportswriting."  He has also been featured on various ESPN programs for over three decades, including, the current show, Around the Horn.      Bill Chuck recently joined us on episode 139 to discuss his latest book, In Scoring Position:  40 Years Of A Baseball Love Affair, which he co-authored with Bob Ryan.  That is 139 episodes too late as we wish we had known Bill when we first started the show, almost five years ago.  Bill is a baseball writer and researcher and has a weekly column in the Chicago Sun-Times.  He feels lucky to have found us, but that feeling goes both ways, as we are so fortunate to have him on again and will have him back as many times as he will say yes.  Bill knows baseball and loves the game. Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years.  Primarily known for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, it is the May 6, 2000 game he played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park which we discuss.  In that game, Trachsel was masterful as he struck out 11 batters in a complete game 1-0 gem; outdueling future Hall of Famer, Pedro Martinez who K'd 17 hitters.  Steve was a previous guest on episode 127 and discussed his remarkable baseball career, which included the ability to remain on the field and give his teams well-pitched innings, usually throwing more than 200 per year.  He takes us into the game as we get to see it played from his perspective.  This is a rare treat that was not lost on us or either of our guests, Bob and Bill.     Ryan Fey and Mark Anderson are known as The Grill Dads.  After winning Guy's Big Project, hosted by Guy Fieri they starred in the prime-time shows, The Grill Dads and Comfort Food Tour on the Food Network.  They have also appeared on Beat Bobby Flay, The Wendy Williams Show, The Today Show, and the Howard Stern Wrap-Up Show.  Their latest project is the incredibly funny cookbook, The Best Grilling Cookbook Ever Written By Two Idiots.  The book has recipes that will expand your grilling repertoire while making food you will thoroughly enjoy.  Fey and Mark are two best friends who are both from the world of advertising and love to cook.  It is that friendship, love of cooking, creativity, and excellent senses of humor that are making The Grill Dads a brand you will want to know and this cookbook one you will want to own.  We recommend you go to BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces, Baseball BBQ, https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and Magnechef, https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves, and Cutting Edge Firewood, https://www.cuttingedgefirewood.com/ for high-quality firewood and cooking wood. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" by the musician, Dave Dresser, and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. Episode #135 features Former MLB Pitcher, Glendon Rusch, Hog Farmer, Tank Jackson, Pitmaster, Tuffy Stone, and a Special Visit and Offer for Our Listeners from Ray Sheehan of BBQ Buddha Glendon Rusch is a left-handed former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the Kansas City Royals, New York Mets, Milwaukee Brewers, Chicago Cubs, San Diego Padres and Colorado Rockies.  He also has a reputation, apparently well deserved, of having been one of the nicest people in baseball.  In September 2006 he was diagnosed with a life-threatening blood clot in his lung, but he was able to mount a comeback and pitch again.  Legendary manager and two-time Baseball and BBQ podcast guest, Bobby Valentine once described Glendon as one of the gutsiest pitchers he ever coached.  In 2000, he won 11 games for the New York Mets, helping them get to the World Series.  Glendon is a huge fan of the music group, Pearl Jam, and did quite well in our name that  Pearl Jam song game. Tank Jackson raises hogs used by some of the finest restaurants and Tuffy Stone is an award-winning pitmaster, television personality, and restaurateur.  We were fortunate to meet them at Pig Beach BBQ in Queens, New York during the Jeff Michner Foundation BBQ Benefit.  Each interview is short but comes with their assurances they will join us again.  Although the conversations were brief, we had the opportunity to gather some barbecue tips and get a small glimpse into each of their lives and enjoy their delightful personalities, which were on display all day for the many people who paid to be there and experience each of the cooks' signature dishes. We are extremely fortunate to be joined by Ray Sheehan, founder of BBQ Buddha, known for its multi-award-winning, all-natural barbecue sauces and spice blends as well as being the author of two cookbooks, Award-Winning BBQ Sauces and How to Use Them:  The Secret Ingredient to Next-Level Smoking and Big Green Egg Basics from a Master Barbecuer.  Ray's next great adventure is the soon-to-be-opened restaurant, Ray's Roadside Kitchen in Cream Ridge, New Jersey.  Ray has an exciting Father's Day 2022 offer for our listeners as he announces an exclusive promo code to receive very nice savings on his sauces, rubs, and cookbooks which are found at https://bbqbuddha.com/ We recommend you go to baseballbbq.com https://baseballbbq.com for special grilling tools and accessories, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces and Magnechef https://magnechef.com/ for excellent and unique barbecue gloves. Baseball and BBQ Episode #127 features former MLB pitcher, Steve Trachsel and special guest co-host/champion pitmaster, Doug Scheiding.  Trachsel enjoys talking baseball, but he seems to really love talking about barbecue and wine.  Great baseball and barbecue talk are found here. Steve Trachsel was a Major League pitcher for 16 years.  Known primarily for his time with the Chicago Cubs and the New York Mets, he also played for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays, and the Baltimore Orioles.  His baseball journey includes being a once-proud member of the Long Beach State Dirtbags and playing in the College World Series.  Steve hit three career home runs and his first was hit off of Curt Schilling.  He possessed an incredible ability to remain on the field and give his teams well-pitched innings, usually throwing more than 200 per year.  His bobblehead is rare, and it is one of the most sought after at the New York Mets Fantasy Camp.  16 years in the Major Leagues are bound to produce some memorable moments and excellent stories, and Steve has tons of them, including giving up Mark McGwire's record-breaking 62nd home run in 1998 and his feelings on Sammy Sosa and his other teammates reactions.  Steve was once nicknamed the "Human Rain Delay" and he discusses how it bothered him at first, but later embraced it and now uses it to his advantage.  Even how he chose his uniform number is a good story.  A lover of barbecue and wine (he even has a wonderful story about visiting Tom Seaver's California Vineyard), Steve is thrilled to talk with Doug and pepper him with lots of really good barbecue talk and some very good questions.         We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and BBQ Buddha, https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award-winning sauces.
