Geek Girl Reviews Hannah Gadsby's Nanette - Stand-Up Comedy that hits DEEP

Whew. This week on Geek Girl Reviews, we checked out Hannah Gadsby's stand-up comedy Nanette on Netflix. Whaaaat an INCREDIBLE and freaking powerful stand-up. It's an emotional rollercoaster and honestly, towards the end the tears of laughter definitely turned to tears of compassion. It feels wrong to call this a stand-up comedy.. because, okay, it starts out being pretty funny, but by the end of these 69 minutes, no one was laughing. Hannah gets deep and bares her soul and trauma and true experiences. And it's heartbreaking. It's beautiful. It's a plea for us all to be better fucking human beings. Hannah Gadsby is a stand-up comedian from Tasmania who rose to fame seemingly overnight when Nanette released on Netflix. But in reality, Hannah's been hard at work on the comedy scene for over a decade, playing to sold out shows across the globe. Outside the laughs about gender, sexuality, being a lesbian, the patriarchy, and misogyny, Hannah hits on some real serious issues. Homophobia, abuse, violence, shame, despair... Nanette cuts deep and true. As a society, we need to do better, to be better, to act better. We have it in us! It's just so fucking hard to see it right now. The world is so full of hatred, not just towards queer people, but towards anyone (and sometimes everyone) who's different from that person's norm. Let us tell you - we're better than this and you are, too! Diversity is strength. Diversity builds society. Celebrate and embrace all the different types of people that exist in this world! Hannah Gadsby is amazing. Nanette is amazing. It's a MUST WATCH for every single person in the world. If you haven't seen it, stop what you're doing and go check it out right meow! Trigger warning though for sure. And probably bring tissues. We've decided to issue an official #GeekHerringChallenge: Make connections. Like everyone else, we were captivated this year by Phoebe Waller-Bridge's Fleabag, a short show (on Amazon Prime in the U.S., BBC Three in the UK) with fourth-wall breaking wit, silly and perverse situations, and a surprising amount of heart as the protagonist's psyche and trauma unravels. Also, there's a Hot Priest. We discuss how the show approaches humor, the evolving role of the audience/camera as Fleabag learns to love herself, gender, cinematography, and the complicated relationship between sex, trauma, and guilt. Plus, in a special aftershow, we gush about the well-deserved Emmy wins and how the show differs from the original one-woman play, which Tay saw a broadcast of, including the fate of the guinea pig. Note: because of the adult subject matter of this show, listener discretion is advised. Sources we consulted and/or want to share: See if there's a National Theatre Live broadcast of the play near you! Olivia is going to see it the weekend we're posting this! Ryan and Mike pause a moment to acknowledge that they are in fact straight white males, and being so, have a limited and possibly narrow perspective on this particular subject. They hope their perspectives as a Therapist and a mental health advocate can offer something to the conversation. Inspired by this raw and real performance by Hannah Gadsby, Ryan and Mike look at the theme of identity; who we see ourselves as--and are we ok with how others see us? The other theme that strikes them is shame as a result of our feeling of identity. Hannah, gives us a first hand, and very real view into these themes, and like all the issues and themes on Pop Psych 101 they need understanding. Ryan, offers up some embarrassing moments from his childhood that helped shape him into the man he grew to be. Mike talk about goobers. Synopsis: In the 2018 Netflix comedy special Nanette, comedian Hannah Gadsby starts out her set with fairly standard jokes about coming out as a lesbian and what it was like for her growing up in Tasmania. She shares important lessons we can learn from art history and whether or not creativity means you must suffer. Over the course of her special however, she begins to acknowledge that these self deprecating jokes are insufficient in letting her tell and fully take care of her story. She shares the stark reality of what it was like for her in coming out and how she was treated and ultimately abused several times over the course of her life, just for being herself. She challenges the audience to sit with their own tension and to not let anger or laughter cover it up. As a result, Hannah admits she needs to quit comedy as it doesn't allow her to fully embrace and deal with her trauma. Find Us: Mental Health Podcast | Pop Psych 101 We have a Blog! Listener questions, pleasure, and reproductive justice with Monica Raye Simpson of SisterSong. DeeLo wrote in with an a-ha moment around Hannah Gadsby's "Nanette" and something I said a few weeks ago. Yay bodies and rewriting stories. Julie wanted to offer some thoughts around mindfulness, anxiety, PTSD, and working with a professional after hearing Dr. Lori Brotto's episode a few weeks ago. Co-signed! Anonymous needs help. Her new partner's erection lasted for hours. Is he just nervous or anxious? Maybe things will get better? Is there something she can do? I got help answering this question from Patreon supporter Crystal Force, and then weigh in myself. And then, there's Monica. The first time I saw Monica speak at Woodhull Sexual Freedom Summit, I was moved to tears. Her clarity about the work she does, who she does it for, and how she wants to be in the world is extraordinary. She understands the importance of sexual freedom and the role that happiness, pleasure, and queer acceptance play in our overall lives, and how reproductive justice can be a gateway to freedom in so many aspects of our lives. I can't wait for you to hear it. Plus, Patreon supporters - If you support the show at the $3 level and above, this week's bonus is an exploration into a relationship charter. I'll offer you some questions to reflect on and even talk to a loved one about, as a jumping off point for being more deliberate and co-creative in the way you do relationship with each other. Following Leanne's experience of watching Hanna Gadsby's Nanette on Netflix, we spent the whole episode talking about this amazingly unique comedy show and Hannah's brilliant performance.Leanne proposed that standup comedy show should be considered an art form too. She believed Nanette had all qualities to be viewed as a piece of highbrow art. Leanne broke down the show into moments and actions from which a discussion was elaborated between us. Julie continued the topic on Nanette. As a person from the same city that Hanna is from, Julie suggested that Hannah blurred the boundary between comedy show and theatre works. By using the knowledge about Myall Creek massacre, Julie raised the question if the art was competent in assisting people of current generation to deal with trauma, especially the ones inherited from previous generations, and in producing memorials. This episode presented a heated, vibrant and smooth conversation that could be related to many listeners. In the end, Julie revealed a book that she was finishing up for Lost Rocks series. It was the project including 50 Tasmanian people to write about rock. The book is called 'Shale'. it will be out in October.Leanne's exhibition titled Subterraneans will be held at the Dirty Dozen (in Campbell Arcade, underground commuter walkway from Flinders street Station to Degraves Street). It is curated by Leanne and shows twelve artists who have studied at MFA course at RMIT. The show opens to the public from 20/7 - 24/8. The opening will be from 7-9pm on Friday 20/7. Please check it out.
