Millions of us hide in a ubiquitous sorrow. And pretty much all of us are horrible at talking about it. But Michael Cruz Kayne, Peabody-award winning writer for "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," has a theory about why death feels unspeakable. Helping children establish boundaries is important for developing friendships and maintaining positive social interactions. Boundaries help people set limits for themselves and honor limits set by others. In "Boundaries," three eight- and nine-year-old kids (Olivia, Izzy, and Wynter) define and discuss boundaries and help Qook-a-leekie and Link-a-deedle friends learn the importance of boundaries. They discover that understanding someone else's boundaries requires empathy, the ability to recognize others' feelings...and that takes practice. The role of Qwee-vee the Qook-a-leekie is played by Ana Cruz Kayne and the role of Lexton the Link-a-deedle is played by Michael Cruz Kayne. How do you turn the worst thing that's ever happened to you into a comedy show? Comedian Michael Cruz Kayne went viral for a tweet he posted on the 10th anniversary of his newborn son's death. What followed was an outpouring of support, but also: of storytelling, with thousands of people sharing their own experiences of loss. His one man show, Sorry for Your Loss, and his podcast, A Good Cry, have made the topic of child loss a little bit easier to approach. He'd like you to know you should ask your sad friend about the sad thing that happened to them: it's ok to not know what to say. In this episode we cover: Can you make comedy about tragedy? How telling the truth can make you less lonely Is it okay to say “sorry for your loss”? If family members would be upset by what you say on stage, should you say it anyway? Does everything happen for a reason? (spoiler: no. but maybe yes.) Looking for a creative exploration of grief? When one goes to a funeral we console those who are the children and the grandchildren of the person who dies. Similarly, there are spiritual children and grandchildren that could be consoled when their spiritual parents die.Paul calls Titus such a person: my spiritual CHILD. Paul writes a letter to his spiritual son and of course includes all the good stuff. We have that letter! It is here for us to listen-in on! We hear the heart of a spiritual father to his spiritual son. Paul is a person who when he died, some astute person went to TITUS and said, "I'm sorry for your loss."Join me over the next couple of weeks as we glean what we can from the interception of this letter. Over the past week, news broke that the novels of Roald Dahl were being rewritten to match modern sensibilities and remove language that some people have deemed offensive. These changes—which came at the behest of the Roald Dahl Story Company and Puffin, the books' publishing house—were ostensibly made to make the books better representative of, and more approachable for, diverse audiences. While the publishers can rewrite the book, however, they can't rewrite history: namely, that Dahl himself was a self-proclaimed antisemite. Is changing a few words an effective cover-up for the author's more problematic ideals? To get to the core of the issue, we're joined by YA author Joanne Levy. Dedicated Bonjour Chai listeners may recall Levy from her participation in our book club in November 2021. Two of the hardest words to say are “I'm sorry.” We would much rather voice the words “It wasn't my fault” or “Well, if you hadn't…” But a heartfelt apology has the power to mend relationships and move us toward greater compassion for those who are hurting. This series will take us behind our excuses and hesitations when it comes to apologizing. We'll discover what the Bible says about empathy and how it can be the greatest gift we have to offer. If “I'm sorry” seems to have dropped from your vocabulary, join us as we get honest about admitting when we're wrong.Recorded live at CrossWinds Church on May 15, 2022.
