When I was in my twenties, I had joined a tennis league. I used to drive 45 min from my office on a Monday night to play the weekly matches. On Wednesdays, I spent another hour taking tennis lessons to improve my game. When I think about it, I marvel at my ability to leave work behind and commit to doing something in my evenings. Now when I make plans on a weeknight, I find myself feeling guilty and wanting to get back to my desk as soon as possible to get a little more work done and be a little more prepared for tomorrow. No matter how much fun I am having, this low hum of anxiety plays in the background. Over time I have realized that anxiety is a bit like leaked makeup in your purse - it is going to leave a mark on everything, your health, relationships, sleep, and work.So I felt fortunate to come across Heather Rider, an anxiety coach. When Heather described to me what high functioning anxiety is (a form of anxiety that afflicts high achievers as they struggle to consistently meet their own high standards), I instantly recognized the symptoms in myself. Her story inspired me to question what I had accepted as “normal” and to work towards turning off this constant voice in my head asking me to do more.Heather Rider is an anxiety coach and Imposter Syndrome educator who personally overcame high-functioning anxiety and Imposter Syndrome while working in a demanding Tech job. You can also follow Heather on social media - LinkedIn, Facebook and Pinterest. I would highly recommend watching the videos on her YouTube channel. One of my favorites is Top Three Reasons You Ruminate. Heather's story of ruminating about conversations with her mother-in-law really resonated with me. It has made me more aware of such conversations I have in my head! If you have any comments about the episode or would like to share your own story, you can share them here.

Our guest for this episode is Heather Rider, she is an Anxiety Specialist and Impostor Syndrome Educator. She has worked with hundreds of clients who were suffering from anxiety, panic attacks, sleepless nights, overwhelm, severe stress, and perfectionism. Heather herself suffered from anxiety and did not know she had it until her recovery. She struggled with High Functioning Anxiety for 10 years. Her mind was just constantly churning, running non-stop either replaying the past or thinking too much about the future, about any possible thing that could go wrong. This anxiety caused her to have a very severe autoimmune reaction and it took her almost a year and a half to heal from it. Listen to this episode and learn how she has recovered from anxiety and how she now helps her clients deal with the same suffering she had to go through. Notice the hamster on the wheel! https://makeeverythingfun.com/mountain-mantras-book-trailer/ #3: If YOU don't say no the body will say no I mention a favorite book of mine called “When the Body Says No” by Dr. Gabor Mate: https://www.amazon.com/When-Body-Says-Understanding-Stress-Disease/dp/0470923350 #4: Be open to signals from the universe #5: Take consistent action towards mental wellness Heather talks about her anxiety detox workbook: https://www.theenergysynergist.com/anxiety-workbooks #6: Experiment with various modalities for optimal wellness. “The only way to stop feeling like an impostor is to stop thinking like an impostor.”  ~ Valerie Young Guest Introduction: I want to start the conversation today by saying thank you to all the amazing women that I have had on the show. Welcome to Exploring the Seasons of Life, a podcast for women with a big heart on a spiritual journey. I’m your host Cindy MacMillan and I’m joined today by Heather Rider. Each week, I interview coaches and spiritual explorers from all walks of life about beginnings, endings and the messy bits in-between. Self-love, well-being, and mindset are at the heart of our conversations because once you change the inside, the outside will begin to change as well.  I am delighted you are here today -thanks for hanging out with me. Let’s get right to the interview. Heather Rider is an anxiety coach and Imposter Syndrome educator who personally overcame high-functioning anxiety and Imposter Syndrome while working in a demanding Tech job. She works with clients from all over the world who want to take a nontraditional, holistic approach to healing anxiety.  Heather, Welcome to the podcast. I am so happy to have you today and to talk about anxiety and imposter syndrome.  Here’s a glimpse of our conversation:  3:23 When I had imposter syndrome, I found myself in a job, completely overwhelmed by what I was doing. I had been out of technology for 10 years; I had been staying home intermittently with my girls and I had actually been living in another city for a while before I moved back to Austin. And so I moved back to Austin to get back into technology. 7:43 It holds people back because especially at work, because if somebody is feeling like, Who am I? Do I belong here? That means that they won't speak up in meetings, right? They won't share their ideas. They won't pursue new projects, because they think, well, who am I to do that? I don't know what I'm doing. And they're gonna figure out that I don't know what I'm doing. People won't seek out career advancements in their companies. So, I mean, it really, really limits people, which is why I had mentioned that I quickly realized that it was holding me back. 12:35 Imposter syndrome is very common among high-achieving people. 13:07 People who are highly accomplished, they tend to be perfectionist a lot of the time. And so what's underneath the imposter syndrome is perfectionism. It's limiting beliefs, right? It's like subconscious programming, about who we think we are and self-judgment statements. 24:50 One thing I would say regardless of whether it's stress or anxiety, a tip is looking at your life and seeing what you can do less of; people do too much. And that's part of why they're stressed out, right? They're taking on too many things.  You can find Heather Rider at: Website Facebook YouTube  If you enjoyed this conversation with Heather Rider might also enjoy these other episodes: You are Already Good Enough with Dr. Linda Buchanan Spiritual Business Coach and the Founder of The Soul Clean Company, Jessie Chiang Time is Your Life with Becca Rich Thanks for joining us this week on Exploring the Seasons of Life podcast.  Make sure to visit our website, CynthiaMacMillan.com, where you can subscribe to the show on iTunes, Stitcher, or Spotify so you’ll never miss a show. Perfectionism is very different to doing a job to the best of your ability, and according to expert Heather Rider, it's highly problematic in business and life. In this Business Conversations Podcast, Heather shares her first-hand experience of how perfectionism stifles our creativity, leads to procrastination and limits our full potential. Instead, she explains when business owners are willing to try and "give it their best effort" they are far more likely to see quicker growth in their business, plus feel happier and more fulfilled. Three key messages of this podcast include: •The difference between high standards and perfectionism •Why perfectionism is unrealistic and unattainable. Striving for perfectionism leads to burn out. •How fear of not doing something perfectly actually slows growth in business. It is better to be in action than to make sure everything is perfect, which just slows down momentum Known professionally as The Energy Synergist, Heather Rider is an anxiety specialist who personally overcame high-functioning anxiety.
