The ASX 200 kicked 80 points to 8789, or 0.9%, after a relatively benign CPI number came in at 4%. Most sectors of the market rallied, with the exception of the banking sector, which still is under a cloud due to economic headwinds from higher inflation and higher interest rates. The Big Bank Basket closed relatively unchanged. We did see insurers, though, kick slightly higher, with SUN up 4.8%, and other financials also doing okay. ASX up 1.9%, and SOL up 1.8%. We also saw the REIT sector put in a good day today, with GMG up 3.9%, GPT up 2.9%, and SGP up 4.8%, on the hopes that the last rate rise was the last rate rise.Industrials were firm across the board, with retail doing especially well. WES up 3.0%, and JBH up 4.7%. TLS also had a good day, up 1.3%, together with REA after the Irish acquisition yesterday, gaining 5.9%. WOW and COL also rising slightly. In the healthcare sector, CSL continued to push higher, up 1.1%, although the technology sector did take a bit of a break today, with WTC off 1.2% and XRO falling 1.9%. The All-Tech Index was up 0.8%, but it was all about interest-rate-sensitive stocks rallying hard.The resource sector, too, was modestly higher, with BHP up 0.3%, RIO up 1.6%, and the gold sector doing okay, although nothing stellar. NST continued to run higher on rumors of an increased offer from Goldfields, but we continue to see pressure on lithium stocks as the price in China languishes after a miserable September. PLS dropped 0.3%, and MIN dropped 0.2%. Meanwhile, in the oil and gas space, WDS rose slightly, as did STO, and we saw a little bit of selling in the uranium sector.In corporate news, LLC had a good day, jumping more than 11.3% on an update on the sale of its stake in Keaton Retirement Living. A blast from the past: CTT had a very good day today, up 30.6% on news from Italy on a potential VAT win.Economic news dominated today, with the CPI coming in at 4%, slightly below forecasts. Economists around the country were quick to pronounce on whether the RBA would be raising rates in November or whether the RBA would be on hold going forward. Lucy Ellis from Westpac said a November rate rise is now a base case.Asian markets pushed higher with Japan up 1.9%, HK flat and China up slightly10-year yields lower at 5.34% on CPI. The ASX 200 rose just 15 points to 8,680 (0.2%) today in listless trade ahead of the RBA and a big week for US Fed chiefs. The banking sector was firm, with CBA up 0.5% and MQG also having a good day, up 2.3%, with the insurers better on higher bond yields. Financials generally were slightly firmer, although PNI fell 2.0% after news from one of its funds on private credit exposure. A slight upward bias to the industrial space, with TLS up 0.6%, WOW up 1.0%, and COL up 0.8%. Tech was mixed, as WTC rose 1.7%, with TNE down 0.4%. Utilities were also in demand on defensive buying, with ORG up 1.0% and APA up 1.3%.The healthcare sector was once again firm, with CSL continuing to push ever higher and COH also doing well, up 2.0%. REITs were also slightly firmer despite yields increasing, with SGP up 1.7% and SCG up 0.9%.In the resource space, we saw BHP, RIO and FMG all under pressure on fears of lower iron ore prices, and gold miners also falling on the back of higher yields and inflation concerns. EVN fell 3.0%, and NEM fell 2.4%. We also saw selling in the rare earths space, with LYC down X%, while lithium stocks drifted lower.In the energy space, WDS rose slightly, as did STO, up 0.2%, but KAR had a nasty day on the back of production guidance being cut due to electrical issues at Baúna. Uranium stocks also slipped slightly, with PDN down 2.0%.In corporate news, NST rejected a takeover offer from Gold Fields, with a mixture of scrip and cash proving not generous enough. We also saw three ASX-listed private credit funds suspended on valuation concerns.Nothing locally on the economic front as we await the decision from the RBA, which looks like a laydown for another 25-basis-point rise tomorrow afternoon.Asian markets drifted lower with Japan down 0.2%, HK up 0.6% and China down 2.4%.10-year yields at 5.4%. PVV, CDA, JA21, FVD, SGP, CU, BBB, Groep-Markuszower en Mona Keijzer wilden in debat met de minister, maar omdat zij slechts 70 zetels hebben zal dit niet gebeuren. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger zagen een soevereine maar niet foutloze Jesse Klaver, die zich presenteerde als de ware opvolger van Willem Drees en de polder van de zuilentijd. Back to the Fifties. Duidelijk was dat hij met zichzelf had afgesproken dat-ie goedgemutst zou blijven. Hij was futloos, af en toe verbazend ambtelijk op details. Vaker geestverwanten beschimpend dan het kabinet. Met zijn zoveelste motie van wantrouwen liet hij zien dat alleen PVV, FVD en BBB meteen nu het kabinet al weg willen, waardoor hij de positie van Jetten en zijn ploeg onbedoeld versterkte. D66-fractievoorzitter Jan Paternotte – voorheen vaak de koning van het debat - was minder in vorm. Hij vond de toon niet waarmee handreikingen gewicht kregen als serieus gebaar. Wel raak was zijn betoog dat PRO veel kon leren van het kabinet Rutte II in 2013 toen Alexander Pechtolds linksliberalen met ChristenUnie en SGP samen als 'constructieve drie' bereid bleken VVD en PvdA aan meerderheden te helpen. Paternotte valideerde daarmee de analyse van Joop van den Berg in Betrouwbare Bronnen 604, dat de coalitie in de Buma en Letschert fasen van de kabinetsformatie het werk afgeraffeld had. Heel even opperde Jesse Klaver een extra formatiefase in te lassen om zo alsnog een brede coalitie te creëren, maar niemand ging er op in. Daarvoor is het waarschijnlijk net te vroeg. Premier Rob Jetten werd gered door Mona Keijzer. Zij viel Wilders aan met het verwijt dat hij hun beider kabinet-Schoof had opgeblazen net toen dit zijn rechtse zegenrijke werk zou doen. Niets hadden ze waargemaakt. Had hij geen 'Schoofspijt'? Dit mondde uit in een wederzijdse scheldkanonnade waarin alle separatistische frustraties op de radicaal-rechtse flank ongeremd tot uiting kwamen. 'Verraad', 'liegen', 'lafhartigheid' schetterde door de Kamer. Van blokvorming op rechts was geen sprake meer. Keijzers ‘Project 2029’ bleek een bomgordel. Wilders legde JA21 zelfs nog even uit dat Joost Eerdmans een sufferd was. CDA-chef Henri Bontenbal meldde - hevig geïrriteerd over Keijzers aanmatigend beroep op christendemocratische wortels en waarden - dat hij uitzag naar ‘brede en stabiele samenwerking’. Precies wat zij op radicaalrechts gedemonteerd had. Toch moet ook PRO op zijn tellen passen. Klaver zal niet mee willen maken dat de vakbeweging straks moet vaststellen dat PRO niet levert, als enkele partijen rechts van de VVD Jetten te hulp schieten in ruil voor spiegeltjes en kraaltjes. Zij willen geen verkiezingen en geen premier Klaver. En de VVD evenmin. Dan kan de polder dan maar liever, zonder Klaver desnoods, een eigen deal sluiten met Jettens adjudant Hans Vijlbrief, de minister van Sociale Zaken en Werkgelegenheid. Het nieuwste thema in deze APB kwam van Laurens Dassen van Volt: AI als existentiële uitdaging. De premier bleek meer dan geprepareerd. In een vurig betoog van rijkgeschakeerde details schetste hij hoe Nederland samen met Frankrijk in de EU en de Verenigde Naties een serie strategische initiatieven met andere hightech naties ontplooit. De alliantie van ASML en het Franse Mistral is in dit cruciaal domein de avant garde in en vanuit Europa. Dat Emmanuel Macron Jetten al in Veldhoven had opgezocht was veelzeggend. In de bioscoop draait nu de prachtfilm over De Gaulle: Liberté. The ASX 200 rose 30 points to 9,084 (0.3%), although early gains petered out as the banking sector once again came under pressure. The Big Bank Basket fell to $265.70 . CBA was down 2.7%, ANZ fell 1.6%, and the insurance sector was also faring badly, with QBE down 3.9%, SUN down 2.3%, and MPL, which reported today, down 6.4%.Other financials did better, with ASX up 0.3% and ZIP having a cracker of a day, up 18.2%, on better-than-anticipated results. REITs also rose as yields came off on the back of intervention in the US Treasury market, with VCX up 3.2% and SGP up 2.4%, although GMG fell 1.5% following its results.Healthcare was once again a sector in the green, with CSL pushing ahead 2.8% and RMD also up 2.8%, while PME did well, rising 3.6%. We saw gains in the technology sector too, with XRO up 2.4% and WTC bouncing back from yesterday's big sell-off to rise 9.1%. Other tech stocks also rose, with CDA having a cracker of a day, hitting record highs and rising 12.4%. MP1 announced another capital raising and fell 5.1%. Retail stocks were generally better, following some good results, with LOV up x%.The big gains, though, were in the resources sector, with BHP up 3.2%, RIO up 1.8%, and the gold miners doing very well on the back of the explosion in the bullion price. NST rose 6.2%, EVN gained10.2%, with copper still trading close to record highs. GMD also rose 10.3%, while lithium stocks were slightly firmer, as were uranium stocks.In corporate news, IEL plunged 20.7% after a slump in net profit and an 11% drop in revenue. SUL surged 15.1% after beating expectations, while MPL fell hard after membership growth slowed. BXB slipped slightly after its pallets business was affected by the World Cup, while MGH had a good day, rising 9.0%, with profits beating expectations. On the economic front, jobs fell by 15,800 in July following an upwards revision to 80,200 workers for June. The unemployment rate rose to 4.5%. Asian markets were better, with Japan up 1.4%, Hong Kong up 1.2%, China flat, and US futures were narrowly mixed, with the Dow up 18 points and the Nasdaq up 103. European markets poised to open better. The ASX 200 dropped 42 points to 9073 (-0.5%) as once again, the banking sector disappointed, with NAB's results pointing to challenges ahead. The stock fell 4.6%, while ANZ gave back some of last week's gains, falling 2.6%. The Big Bank Basket was down to $277.41 (-1.8%). Financials were generally weaker, with SOL down 1.9%, MQG down 0.5%, and ASX giving back some recent gains. Insurers also slipped, with QBE down1.8% and SUN down 5.1%. REITs came under pressure as bond yields rose, with SCG down 0.8% and SGP down 3.0%.Industrials were generally weaker, with the retail sector leading the market lower. JBH fell 12.3% following underwhelming results, while WES lost 4.4% and HVN also fell 4.6%. Technology stocks were mixed, with WTC down 2.6%, while XRO managed to rise 0.8%. The healthcare sector was particularly buoyant, led by CSL, which rose 3.6%. REITs were also solid, with CHC up 2.2% and SGP adding 1.4%.Technology stocks continued to build on recent gains, with XRO up 3.5% and WTC rising 3.1%. Even the data centre sector joined the rally, with NXT up 4.2%.Resources were firmer across the board. LYC rose 6.6%, while the lithium sector also enjoyed a better day, with PLS up 4.9% and MIN gaining 2.8%. The iron ore majors edged higher despite softer iron ore prices in Singapore trading, while gold miners also had a good session, with NST up 2.1% and NEM rising 2.1%. Iron ore minres were better mostly, FMG up 1.6% and RIO up 1.7%.We also saw buying in the copper sector, with CSC up 3.5% and SFR gaining 3.9%. Oil and gas stocks moved higher, led by WDS, up 1.4%, while uranium and coal stocks were also firmer.In corporate news, we got a taste of what reporting season has in store, with CCP missing expectations and falling heavily, down 7.0%. MGH enjoyed a strong session after announcing a major contract with Firmus, rising 8.1%. We also saw solid gains in DRO following a substantial shareholder notice.On the local economic front, household spending surged ahead of expectations in June, helped by strong EV sales.Asian markets were mixed, with the Nikkei 225 down 0.1%, Hong Kong down 0.8%, China up 1.3%, and Korea off 0.35%. US futures were firmer, with the Dow up 118 points and the Nasdaq up 147 points. The ASX 200 put in another solid performance, rising 91 points to 9039, as iron ore results cheered the resource sector and industrials continued to push higher. The market also took comfort from the latest CPI reading, which came in below expectations and should ease some of the pressure on the RBA to raise rates on 11 August. The banks gave back some early gains, the Big Bank Basket at $295.53 up 0.1%, with ANZ up 1.37%, while other financials were mixed as ASX rallied 1.43%. AMP was showing a clean pair of heels, rising 2.34%. REITs also enjoyed a good session as bond yields fell, with CHC up 2.96% and SGP gaining 4.96%.Industrials also had a strong day, with retailers rallying on rate-cut expectations. JBH rose 4.67% and LOV also found some friends, up 7.88%. The technology sector performed well, with WTC up 2.33% and XRO rising 4.11%. REA, CAR and SEK also enjoyed solid gains, while TLX climbed 0.21%. Both WOW and COL had good sessions, while healthcare was especially firm. CSL rose 7.15% on encouraging news surrounding its Horizon 2 manufacturing technology, and RMD rallied 3.59%.Resources painted a more mixed picture. BHP rose 1.36%, while RIO rallied on the back of better-than-expected results and a stronger-than-expected dividend. FMG also pushed higher. The ASX 200 shrugged off early losses to close 54 points higher at 8948 (0.6%), with the banks proving resilient yet again. CBA rose 1.5% and NAB gained 0.7%, taking the Big Bank Basket to $295.23 (+1.3%) Other financials also had a better day, with HUB up 1.8% and ASX rising 1.5%.REITs also performed well, with GMG up 0.2% and SGP gaining 2.7%. Industrials were firm, led by a rebound in the tech sector, with XRO up 3.7%, WTC up 8.1% and TNE rising 3.3%. TLS had a good day, up 1.6%, while retailers also performed well, with JBH up 3.3% and WES gaining 2.1%. Healthcare was also in the pink, with CSL up 2.7% and RMD rising 3.4%.It was a different story in resources, with BHP down 1.2% and RIO falling 2.5%. Gold stocks gave back some of yesterday's gains, with GMD down 1.1% and EVN easing 1.8%. Lithium stocks remained under pressure, with PLS down 4.9% and MIN falling 2.9%.Oil and gas stocks enjoyed a better session, with WDS rallying 2.8% and STO up 1.2%, although coal stocks continued to drag. Een reformatorisch kerkverband dat buitenstaanders al snel als ‘zwaar' en ‘streng' bestempelen. Maar kloppen die vooroordelen wel? Hoe is het er nou écht? Wijnand Zondag maakte een bliksemcarrière aan de universiteit. Hij promoveerde cum laude en werd voor zijn dertigste hoogleraar arbeidsrecht aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. Hij kon ook rechter worden, kortom: de wereld lag aan zijn voeten. Tot zijn leven een onverwachte wending nam. Hij werd 'geroepen', gooide het roer volledig om en werd predikant. Een paar jaar later sloeg het noodlot toe. "Het zal je dochter maar zijn," zei Wijnand Zondag op een zondagavond, in een preek over het verliezen van een kind. De volgende dag kwam zijn eigen dochter Rhodé (14) bij een verkeersongeval om het leven.  Hoe kan je daarna nog verder? Als mens, als vader, als gelovige? Zo'n minderheidskabinet blijkt toch wennen. Vaste rolverdelingen en werkwijzen moeten worden aangepast. Ook de ministersploeg zelf moet anders te werk gaan. Onderling, binnen de coalitie en in het politieke krachtenspel rond het Binnenhof. Al in het vroegste stadium moet zo'n minderheidsploeg voor het behalen van effectieve meerderheden de beleidsruimte en de prijs meewegen. Om te beginnen binnen de eigen ploeg en dat is al lastig genoeg. Jettens ploeg lijkt hier zelfs wat op de Schoof-coalitie, waarin vanzelfsprekende meerderheden eveneens ontbraken, hoewel de parlementaire steun aanvankelijk ruim bemeten leek. Nee, er was groot onderling wantrouwen en fractieleiders die de premier en zijn collega’s marginaliseerden. Rob Jetten zal het die kant niet op willen laten gaan. Ook het parlement moet wennen. Ze dachten na de kabinetsformatie twee routes naar meerderheden te hebben. Maar voortgaande versplintering en stuurloosheid in beide Kamers vertroebelden dat beeld meteen al. Jetten kan zodoende proberen verdeel en heers te spelen, maar de lotgevallen van minister Sjoerd Sjoerdsma laten zien hoe riskant dat spel is. De brede steun in de Tweede Kamer voor de motie van Jesse Klaver tegen akkoorden met politici die oproepen tot geweld of de omvolkingstheorie verspreiden, kan hier nog onverwachte gevolgen hebben. Want door zich daar tegen te keren hebben partijen als JA21 en SGP zich laten gijzelen door FvD en groep-Markuszower. Komen zij zo buiten spel te staan? Europees en internationaal heeft Jetten zich met zijn ploeg nadrukkelijk gemanifesteerd. Hier is duidelijk merkbaar dat velen in de Kamer - bij alle kritische kanttekeningen - er voorkeur aan geven niet opnieuw een kortademig avontuur mee te maken. Stabiele, duidelijke verhoudingen zijn gewenst en noodzakelijk. Zeker als voor de decennia over grote investeringen in Defensie beslist moeten worden. Het kabinet is overladen met huiswerk. De jaarlijkse beleidsanalyse door de Europese Commissie laat zien dat D66, VVD en CDA niet langer kunnen talmen. Die indringende en uitvoerige richtingwijzer uit Brussel benadrukt dat Nederland grote dossiers al jaren stagneren. Investeringen in R&D en kennis bijvoorbeeld, maar bij ook stikstofaanpak, waterkwaliteit, de energietransitie, woningbouw, de arbeidsmarkt en ineffectieve fiscale regelingen. Die Europese analyse komt sterk overeen met de indringende kritiek van de Algemene Rekenkamer, zoals president Pieter Duisenberg die verwoordde in Betrouwbare Bronnen. Opvallend is ook, dat eenzelfde ongenoegen merkbaar is in de polder. Het sociaal overleg met het kabinet leidde niet tot doorbraken. Maar de analyse uit Brussel lijkt op veel punten aanknopingspunten voor het door Jetten gewenste 'brede pact' te bevatten. Ondertussen schrijven werkgevers en vakbonden aan een ‘agenda voor Nederland’, liet de nieuwe voorzitter van het CNV, Hans van den Heuvel, zich ontvallen.
