Holly is the author of the 2013 book Sweetening The Pill: Or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control, and a writer on 2021's The Business of Birth Control documentary. Hotflash inc founder Ann Marie McQueen asks Holly all about what happened after her book was published, reaction to it and the documentary, and some of the top lines about what she found out during her years of research, all based on her own experience. And they talk about how the conversation around menopause hormone therapy relates to the conversation around the pill, and how previous pill use could be informing perimenopause and menopause. June 30, 2015 PCOS Diva has a fundamental purpose of empowering and educating women about their health and fertility. That is why I am thrilled to get behind a Kickstarter campaign to turn Holly Grigg Spall’s book, Sweetening the Pill: or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control into a documentary. Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein plan to make this thought-provoking book into a documentary. The goal is to empower and educate women so they can make an informed choice about their fertility and birth control. Too often, women are given the birth control pill as a first line treatment for PCOS. They are never informed of the countless side effects they can expect while on the pill or the post-pill syndrome they can expect when they stop taking it. We are rarely educated by physicians about the rhythms of our body and how to regulate our cycles with lifestyle choices and supplements. I had the opportunity to interview author Holly Grigg- Spall this week. Listen to my interview with Holly and learn about: The benefits and side effects of hormonal birth control (the pill and its cousins) Difference between a period on the pill and a period on your own Regulating your period without pharmaceuticals What is body literacy and why it is important How you can help make this documentary project happen!

In today's episode, Holly and I talk about her most recent project as an ambassador for Daysy and Lady-Comp. We talk about the implications of using tech for cycle tracking and why most Fertility Awareness Educators, myself included, tend to discourage the use of fertility devices with prediction technology. Topics discussed in today's episode What are Daysy and Lady-Comp and how are they used for Fertility Awareness tracking? How effective are these devices? How do these devices "know" when you are fertile and infertile? Do these devices encourage women to continue relying on external technology instead of learning about their bodies? Why do Fertility Awareness Educators discourage the use of predictive technology for Fertility Awareness? How can these devices bridge the gap between hormonal birth control and the fertility awareness method? Can Daysy and Lady-Comp give women an option when they want to transition off the pill? Do these devices just take us back to the rhythm method and encourage women to count the days of their cycle? The future of birth control technology from IUDs to remote control birth control How do Fertility Apps use our data without our knowledge? The importance of meeting women where they are with their knowledge and comfort with their own bodies The role that devices like Daysy and Lady-Comp can play in helping women transition from hormonal birth control and gain knowledge about their bodies Connect with Holly You can connect with Holly on her website and on Facebook and Twitter! Laura is a veteran sexual and reproductive health advocate who has worked for and volunteered with Planned Parenthood-affiliated organizations in Canada since 1986. She was a Columnist for Troy Health Media, and she is the new editor-in-chief for Re: Cycling, the blog of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. As many of you know, I recently interviewed Holly-Grigg Spall, and in that interview, we spoke about her book Sweetening the Pill or how we got hooked on hormonal birth control. Laura actually wrote the forward to this book, and she has also publicly shown her support for the upcoming documentary that Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein are doing based on the book. And she has also charted her cycles for 27 years. Today we will be talking about the health implications of using the Fertility Awareness Method that go beyond the practical aspects of having a hormone-free method of birth control, why rejecting the pill is actually not "anti-feminist" and why it is important for women to have access to accurate information about all forms of birth control regardless of what method they eventually decide to rely on. Topics discussed in today's episode Is it possible for women to learn to use the Fertility Awareness Method confidently and accurately? Why a "possibly fertile day" is actually a fertile day The role that intention plays in the effectiveness of the Fertility Awareness Method The role that the Fertility Awareness plays in helping women to learn body literacy The implications of placing young women on the hormonal birth control before their menstrual cycles have fully matured The importance of helping women transition off of hormonal contraceptives successfully Why questioning "the pill" is not actually "anti-feminist" The benefits of having the ability to understand and interpret your fertile signs Why the pill doesn't "regulate" a woman's cycle or "mimic pregnancy," and what it is actually doing to your hormones Why Laura has publicly endorsed the upcoming documentary Sweetening The Pill by Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein In this podcast episode, Laura described the hormonal changes that a woman experiences naturally throughout her menstrual cycle, and how that changes when a woman is taking hormonal contraceptives. For reference, here is an image of the hormonal cycle during a healthy menstrual cycle. You'll notice that a woman has high levels of estrogen in the first half of her menstrual cycle before ovulation, and high levels of progesterone in the second half of her cycle after she ovulates. In today's show, I have Jane Bennett joining me all the way from Australia! Jane originally trained in in Social Work and Clinical Hypnotherapy and is now working as a researcher, counselor, and Natural Fertility Management Educator. Jane’s main area of focus has been educating women and girls about Natural Fertility Management methods (i.e. Fertility Awareness). Jane designed and created a program called The Natural Fertility Management Conception Kit and the Natural Fertility Management Contraception Kit offering in-depth knowledge and teachings of the fertility awareness method for contraception and optimal conception that is easy to learn and use! During her time working with Natural Fertility Management Jane became aware of the need for a more positive and healthy attitude toward menstruation for the physical, mental and emotional well-being of women and girls as well as for the sake of our individual and collective fertility. She is the author of A Blessing Not a Curse: A Mother-Daughter Guide to the Transition from Child to Woman as well as The Pill: Are You Sure It's For You? She also created and founded Celebration Day for Girls - a program designed for young women to learn about menstruation, fertility, to celebrate reaching that important milestone of menarche, and to help girls develop a positive experience and association with menstruation. In today's episode, Jane and I talk about the important role that having a regular menstrual cycle plays throughout a woman's life. We question the idea that menstruation has no purpose and we also question the current trend towards suppressing menstruation altogether through the use of long-acting or continuous use hormonal contraceptives. We discuss the importance of celebrating rites of passage and why we should be celebrating menarche and encouraging girls to develop a positive association with menstruation and a better understanding of their fertility from a young age. Topics discussed in today's episode Why every woman should have the opportunity to learn about her menstrual cycles and her fertility from a young age regardless of whether or not she intends to use Fertility Awareness for contraception Why "sex ed" should encompass more than simply discussing menstrual products and telling girls that they're fertile all the time What topics Jane incorporates into her Celebration Day program, and why she feels teenage girls can benefit from fertility awareness education Why we should question the effectiveness rates of all birth control methods, for example, although the pill is often stated to be 99% effective, typical user rates result in 4-6 pregnancies per year for every 100 female users Why barrier methods like condoms, diaphragms, cervical caps, and natural methods of birth control like fertility awareness should not simply be discounted based on the reported "effectiveness rates" How the user's motivation, understanding, and intention significantly impacts the "effectiveness rate" of the method of contraception that she chooses The devastating impact the pill has on a woman's nutrient stores especially after long-term use How powerful a dose of synthetic hormones you actually receive from hormonal contraceptives in comparison with your natural hormone levels The detrimental impact that hormonal contraceptives can have on your mood, your emotional and mental health, as well as your overall health and fertility Jane challenges the myth that the fertility awareness method of contraception is not an effective form of birth control Connect with Jane! Today's guest is Will Sacks, co-founder of the Kindara charting app! If you haven’t heard of Kindara, it is one of the most user-friendly fertility awareness charting apps available. I started charting my cycles before the age of charting apps and I have found Kindara to be one of the best fertility awareness friendly charting apps out there. I love that the “predictor setting” is optional and that the user-friendly interface allows me to track all of my fertility signs easily. I also love that using the Kindara app links you to a community of women where you can share your charts and support each other. Will study mechanical engineering and economics at McGill University, and when he learned about fertility awareness charting he discovered the magic of the feminine, and came to appreciate and understand women on a much deeper level. He appreciates how this level of understanding is lacking in our culture and has been working to improve the ability of women to understand and track their fertility by creating the Kindara Charting app. In today's episode, we talk about the different ways that fertility awareness charting can help women to discover and appreciate their own fertility and the amazing ways that our bodies work. We also talk about the impact that fertility awareness charting can have on your relationship. Fertility awareness charting offers couples the opportunity to share the responsibility when it comes to contraception, and that is something that is often lacking in many of the commonly used contraceptive methods such as hormonal contraceptives or condoms. We talk about how using fertility awareness charting can increase openness and closeness between partners as well as allow both partners the opportunity to develop not only an increased understanding but also a deep appreciation and reverence for women and their fertility cycles. Topics discussed in today's episode The positive impact that using the fertility awareness method can have on couples who use it The role that the fertility awareness method can play in creating equality between men and women, and put an end to misogyny What are the benefits of learning fertility awareness? Having "the talk" with your partner about birth control options Fertility awareness from a man's perspective Will talk about his appearance on The Doctor's and how frustrating it is that medical practitioners often continue to have such limited knowledge of fertility awareness-based methods of birth control How the Kindara app different from other "period tracker apps" Why the Kindara app works so well for women who are using fertility awareness What is on the horizon for Kindara? Why the new Wink thermometer technology is such a great innovation for women who use the fertility awareness method Why everyone should be learning the basics of fertility and the menstrual cycle Tips for transitioning to fertility awareness after coming off of hormonal contraceptives Connect with Will! Holly Grigg-Spall is the author of Sweetening the Pill or How we got hooked on hormonal birth control. If you haven’t had a chance to read this book and you’ve ever had any questions about the pill you need to get your hands on a copy ASAP! Every woman who is on the pill has ever been on the pill, or is considering going on the pill should read this book! Holly uncovers what could be considered the biggest myth about the pill – which is that it has no impact on our emotions and on our overall health. Holly talks about her own experience with the pill and how it took her years to finally realize that the pill was at the root of her emotional symptoms. These are perhaps some of the least talked about impacts of the birth control pill, and don’t expect your doctor to tell you about it! In today’s show, we will be talking all about the pill and the impacts that it can have on the women who take it. I am a fan of informed consent and after listening to this episode you’ll have a much greater understanding of the potential downsides of taking the pill, and what you can do instead. Topics discussed in today's episode Holly describes her experience with the pill and why it took her many years to identify that the pill was actually the cause of her feelings of anxiety, depression as well as numerous other negative side effects she had been experiencing The deep impact the pill can have on your mood and your emotions, and the reasons why you may not make the connection between your experiences and the pill Why women tend to blame themselves when experiencing negative emotions rather than considering that it may actually be a side-effect of hormonal birth control The detrimental and, in some cases, permanent impact the pill can have on your sex drive The significant impact that the pill's steady dose of daily hormones has on a woman's natural hormones, and how this impacts her moods from day to day Why prescribing the pill to younger and younger women may be robbing them of having a full experience of their hormones, their libido, their sexuality and their fertility Why it is so problematic to continue teaching young girls that they are "fertile all the time" The important role that condoms can play when it comes to birth control as well as the prevention of spreading STIs (sexually transmitted infections) Why it is important to know that hormonal contraceptives are not the primary method of birth control everywhere in the world Why hormonal contraceptives are not required to prevent pregnancy The role that fertility awareness can play in helping women to transition from using the pill with the confidence that they can prevent pregnancy naturally Connect with Holly!
