Is hormonal birth control affecting more than just pregnancy prevention? In this Habits and Hustle podcast episode, I am joined by Dr. Sarah Hill, an evolutionary psychologist and author who explains the surprising ways birth control pills influence women's brains, behavior, and mate selection. We discuss how synthetic hormones alter women's natural cycles, changing partner preferences and affecting emotional responses. We also explore the fascinating science behind mate selection through an evolutionary lens, why men are attracted to women at peak fertility, and how birth control can disrupt the pheromonal cues that influence attraction. Dr. Sarah Hill is an evolutionary psychologist, author, and researcher who earned her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin working with Dr. David Buss. Her research focuses on understanding behavior and motivation through the lens of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection, with particular emphasis on women's psychology, hormones, and sexual motivation.  What We Discuss:  (00:00) Birth Control & Women's Psychological States (04:14) Effects of Birth Control on Emotions (15:26) Relationship Changes After Birth Control (19:22) Hormonal Birth Control and Pheromones (27:05) Partner Preferences and Attraction Triggers (34:43) Modern Dating Challenges and Hormones (39:01) Modern Dating Delays Marriage (42:51) Women's Relationship Choices and Evolution (48:07) Competition, Jealousy, and Marriage Threats (55:27) Divorce, Dating, and Female Friendship (01:04:43) Hormonal Birth Control and Side Effects …and more! In today's episode of The Root Cause Medicine Podcast, Dr. Kate Kresge sits down with Dr. Ellen Vora to discuss a revolutionary framework for understanding anxiety—not as a disorder, but as a message from the body or soul. They explore the difference between false anxiety, which stems from physiological imbalances like blood sugar crashes, sleep disruption, and inflammation, and true anxiety, which often points to deeper emotional or existential truths. You'll hear them discuss: - Why anxiety is the beginning of an inquiry—not a final diagnosis - The difference between “false” (body-based) and “true” (purpose-driven) anxiety - How nutrient deficiencies and gut imbalances can mimic psychiatric symptoms - The surprising mental health effects of hormonal birth control - How to use food as medicine to support neurotransmitter balance and calm - The dangers of benzodiazepines—and how to taper with the help of functional medicine - The power of psychobiotics, circadian rhythm, and inflammation reduction - Why GABA, inositol, and phosphatidylcholine are key to recovery - How to approach anxiety with both compassion and curiosity

Birth control is a helpful option for many people, but it's good to understand how it might affect the body over time. Hormonal methods like estrogen and progesterone can change how your body produces certain hormones, which might make it harder to get pregnant later on. Some people also notice changes like weight gain or shifts in how their body handles insulin after long-term use.Non-hormonal options like copper IUDs work differently, but they can still cause inflammation in the uterus, which might affect things like implantation or fertility for some. If you're using birth control for reasons like acne or hormone balance, there may be other ways to support your body too. Knowing how these methods work can help you make choices that fit your long-term health and goals.Highlights of the Podcast00:00 – Intro & Disclaimer00:41 – Hormonal Birth Control & Fertility04:29 – Weight Gain & Hormonal Disruption07:08 – Copper IUD Effects12:28 – Preparing for Pregnancy & Health Tips

The 1940s were a pivotal time for the world. In the United States, as men went to fight in World War II, women became essential additions to the US workforce. And when the war ended, many of those women wanted to continue working. But having more children than they wanted or could care for was a huge barrier to making that a reality. When the oral birth control pill became available in 1960, it was a massive deal because it gave women control over when and if they wanted to have children. Today the pill is widely accepted, comes in a number of formulations, and is considered so safe that now you can buy it over the counter. But setting the groundwork for what we have available today took time, and experimentation. The history of the pill was also shaped by racism in an era where discrimination was not just state-sanctioned, but backed by many scientific institutions. In this episode of Tiny Matters, we cover the science and development of the oral birth control pill and, importantly, the lack of ethics in its testing, particularly in the trials that began in Puerto Rico in 1955.Send us your science facts, news, or other stories for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us bonus episode. So first of all - this podcast research was done by the wonderful Coach Brittany. We did film it together HOWEVER we had technical difficulties and not all of it was recorded. I had to re-record it solo BUT GIVE ALL CREDIT TO THIS INFORMATION TO HER! I am simply the one who delivered it. In a past episode we went over how birth control affects our body's natural production of hormones and the side effects that come with it and how it does not actually solve your hormonal symptoms but masks them (and can actually make them worse - making coming off birth control really hard - I learned that the hard way. So today I covered a ton of alternatives to hormonal birth control thanks to all of Brittany's research. I HIGHLY recommend you go back to our original birth control podcast as it gives you a ton of information and background! Send us a textWelcome back to our birth control September series, we're finally moving into the conversation of how to replenish your body after birth control and recover from the effects it has had on your hormones and gut. Today, gut health is the main focus and I'm sharing some of the ways birth control affects the gut that are often overlooked, including an increased risk of leaky gut and even a 30% increased risk of severe gut symptoms like IBD. I believe that women deserve fully informed consent when given any medication, and gut health is not something we're often given info about when we start taking birth control. Birth control can also cause you to burn through more nutrients and minerals so I'm walking you through the steps I would take if I were coming off of birth control, trying to restore my gut from previous birth control use, or preparing to conceive after birth control. In today's episode, Dr. Hill and I discuss the topic of birth control and its effects on women's health. Dr. Hill shares how hormonal birth control can impact mental health, including an increased risk of depression and anxiety. The synthetic hormones in birth control pills can affect neurotransmitters in the brain, leading to mood changes and emotional fluctuations. Contrary to popular belief, Dr. Hill shares how the impact of birth control on weight gain is not a simple yes or no answer. Research shows that the effects of birth control on weight can vary depending on factors like starting weight and individual metabolism. Additionally, the pill can also affect the physicality of oneself due to the absence of the natural rise in estrogen. Dr. Hill later highlights the potential risks of putting teenagers on hormonal birth control, especially during a crucial period of brain development. The pill's impact on hormonal flexibility and oxytocin signaling could have long-term effects on mental health and attachment, raising concerns about postpartum depression and other mood disorders. This episode is a must listen as it teaches about the complex relationship between birth control and women's health.
