LOVING LIFE AT HOME - Christian Marriage, Faith-Based Parenting, Biblical Homemaking, Purposeful Living

It's Thanksgiving week, so I'm counting my blessings, and my 12 children are right up there at the top of the list. Another thing I'm grateful for? The fact my husband didn't cut my childbearing years short by getting a vasectomy, though he definitely considered it at one point. Listen to this week's episode to hear why, and to learn what stopped him from going through with it.  Show Notes: VERSES CITED:  - Colossians 1:16-17 - "...all things have been created through Him and for Him. He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together." - Hebrews 1:3 - "The Son is the radiance of God's glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word." - Revelation 4:11 - “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.” - 1 Corinthians 8:6 - "...there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through Whom all things came and through Whom we live." As women, most of us remember exactly the moment we got our first period. It may have been a moment of embarrassment, shame, or humiliation.  But it really shouldn't be this way. Our bodies are amazing, and we need to appreciate all that they do for us. So many young girls first learn about menstruation with such a negative connotation. Rather, they should be encouraged to understand the incredible health component of their menstrual cycles.  That's why I have Holly here today, to guide us as mothers and grandmothers of young girls starting their periods. So we can help them feel empowered and knowledgeable about their bodies.  Holly has developed a new app– TEENA, that's designed for young girls to help track their cycles in a very positive way. All while educating them about how their cycles function from a health standpoint as a vital sign.  The app TEENA can be paired with the TEENA device, which is a basal body temperature-based device. This is the first time there's ever been a device designed for tweens and teens to track their basal body temperature as a sign of which cycle phase they are in.  This not only encourages health education and body positivity, but it also helps young girls gain agency over their bodies. It gives them the tools to set them up for success as they navigate junior high and high school, and even into college. Empowerment comes from knowing and owning their bodies at every stage. If you have a daughter or granddaughter at home coming up on her tween years, you'll benefit so much from learning all of Holly's tips about helping these young girls navigate what can be such a stressful time.  In this podcast, Holly shares more about how we can have the hard conversations, and how we can put reproductive health in a positive light.  You won't want to miss all the details Holly shares about the importance of demystifying periods and how we can best help young girls. The resources she offers can lead to reduced anxiety and increased self-awareness, helping girls navigate their teen years with confidence.  So join us in this enlightening discussion and discover how menstrual cycle education can be one of the best things to happen to the young girls in your life.  Help support your daughters, children, or anyone in their journey to becoming their most confident and empowered selves! HOLLY GRIGG-SPALL Holly is the author of “Sweetening the Pill”, the inspiration for the documentary “The Business of Birth Control”-- on which she is a producer. Her book was released in 2013, celebrating its 10th anniversary later this year.  Holly recently launched TEENA, a free education-forward app supporting health and menstrual cycle awareness for tweens and teens. She's on a mission for teenage girls to feel empowered about their cycles so they feel more harmony with their bodies and reproductive systems.  IN THIS EPISODE Holly's story on menstrual health education for teens  The importance of educating teen girls on menstruation  Existing misconceptions and negative views on menstruation The impact of nutrition on the menstrual cycle  How our cycle affects our energy levels and mood  The connection between the brain and the ovaries  Empowerment through body positivity and self-esteem  Menstruation as a fifth vital sign of health  How tracking menstrual cycles can identify underlying issues early on TEENA– the basal body temperature tracking app  RESOURCES MENTIONED MyTEENA.com *Use Discount code: ESSENTIALLY for an additional discount Download the TEENA app  | WearTEENA Instagram | WearTEENA TikTok RELATED EPISODES  #203: Why Your Menstrual Cycle Is A Key Indicator Of Your Health #244: How To Eat And Train According To Your Menstrual Cycle With Dr. Stephanie Estima #146: How To Own Each Phase Of Your Menstrual Cycle #220: Master Your Menstrual Cycle And Optimize Your Fertility With Lisa Hedrickson-Jack #286: What You Need To Know About The Relationship Between Blood Sugar Levels And Your Menstrual Cycle

Ever since it was introduced in the early 1960s, the birth control pill has been inextricable from the concept of women's liberation, body autonomy, and just about everyone's sense of personal freedom and their own life choices. Holly Grigg-Spall, author of Sweetening The Pill: Or How We Got Hooked On Hormonal Birth Control, is in favor of all of those things. But she is also among a growing chorus of activists who believe that the sacrosanct nature of the pill discourages honest conversations about the mental and physical health risks posed by hormonal birth control. Instead of taking it for limited spans of time to prevent pregnancy, many women are often on the pill for the bulk of their reproductive lives, which technically is not the way it was designed to be used. In this conversation, Holly talks about how pharmaceutical companies began marketing birth control pills as “lifestyle drugs” and how artificial disruptions to the reproductive system can cause medical problems to go unnoticed and untreated. She also explains how tech-assisted fertility tracking differs from the old-fashioned “rhythm method” and explores the ways in which “infertility as a default setting for women” has affected mating and dating patterns – and not always for the better.   In the bonus portion for paying subscribers, Holly sticks around and talks about the process of developing Teena, a fertility tracking app for teenagers, and also the documentary The Business of Birth Control, which was inspired by her book (and criticized by Meghan on A Special Place In Hell.)    Guest Bio:  Holly Grigg-Spall is the author of Sweetening The Pill: Or How We Got Hooked On Hormonal Birth Control. Released in 2013, the book will mark its ten-year anniversary later this year and was the inspiration for the 2021 documentary The Business Of Birth Control, Holly recently launched Teena, a free education-forward app supporting body literacy for tweens and teens.

This week on Hormonally Speaking, we have Abby Epstein, the acclaimed American film director and producer best known for her work on the documentaries "The Business of Being Born" "Until the Violence Stops,” and “Weed The People.” Epstein has won several awards for her documentaries, including the Audience Awards at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and Nashville Film Festival, as well as premiering at Sundance, Tribeca, and SXSW festivals. We discuss her and her business partner Ricki Lake's latest movie, “The Business of Birth Control”, which aims to shed light on the effects of hormonal contraceptives and the need for newer and better options. The documentary was inspired by the book "Sweetening the Pill" by Holly Grigg-Spall. We Cover So Much Including: ✨How the film was not made to promote a specific ideology, despite what some people think ✨That it was difficult to find experts in the field who would speak out against the status quo (but they still found some amazing ones!) ✨The fact that modern medicine has often failed women, leading to poor menstrual health, low body literacy, and high rates of endometriosis, PCOS, fibroids, anxiety, and depression ✨Why there is a need to evolve and develop solutions regarding women's health and bodies, especially in terms of contraception and long-term effects of medications ✨And so much more good stuff! Our conversation was powerful, and one you don't want to miss, especially if you are currently on birth control, or have children that are. You'll also want to see the movie ASAP - especially since March 8 is International Women's Day - which you can stream here. Use code “HORMONALLYSPEAKING” at check out to get half off. ABBY EPSTEIN made her film directing debut at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival with the documentary, V-Day: Until the Violence Stops, featuring Jane Fonda, Salma Hayek, and Rosie Perez. The film won the Audience Award at Vancouver's Amnesty International Film Festival and premiered on Lifetime Television, receiving both an Emmy and a Gracie Allen Award. In 2007, she teamed up with Ricki Lake for their widely acclaimed documentary, The Business of Being Born, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and was released by New Line Cinema/Netflix and broadcast on Showtime. The film's success led to their follow-up series, More Business of Being Born, featuring Cindy Crawford, Alanis Morissette, Gisele Bündchen and Christy Turlington plus a book, Your Best Birth, published by Hachette. Next, the duo teamed up for Weed the People, which premiered at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival and won the Audience Award at the Nashville Film Festival. Weed the People was acquired by Netflix for distribution. Under their company, BOBB Films, Ms. Epstein and Ms. Lake produced the documentaries Breastmilk and The Mama Sherpas and are currently in production on The Business of Birth Control. Prior to her film work, Ms. Epstein directed Broadway theater, helming national tours and international productions of RENT and The Vagina Monologues. Abby Epstein and Ricki Lake's award-winning, critically acclaimed documentary The Business of Being Born debuted at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2007. With over 5 million views, an online community of over 100,000, and more than 10 million press imprints, it is often hailed as the “must-see” film among mothers-to-be. Looking at the complex relationship of hormonal contraception to women's health and liberation, their latest documentary, The Business of Birth Control, features the stories of activists, doctors, and scientists who are blowing the whistle on how hormonal birth control affects the mind and body. It is shocking, empowering, and heartbreaking all at the same time. About 13 years ago I watched The Business of Being Born and I was blown away. I remember thinking, “I have to figure out a way to work with these women.” At the time I had no idea how I was going to make that happen. A year later, I moved to New York City, got my health coach certification, and met others in the women's health space, including Holly Grigg Spall, the author of Sweetening the Pill, who was trying to get Ricki and Abby to turn her book into a movie. She introduced me to Abby and we've been friends ever since. I pitched in as much as I could over the years to get this film made and it's finally here! You can catch me at the beginning of the film, talking about the pill and ovulation. In this episode, we talk about our experiences with hormonal birth control, the far-reaching impact our hormones have on our health, why it was difficult to make this movie, how birth control has been used against women of color, the ongoing fight for reproductive justice, and so much more! On today’s episode, we’re talking about a subject that is quite controversial and incredibly personal, one that most women know little about despite popping it daily–hormonal birth control. As holistic Nutritional Therapists, we wanted to dig into the topic a little deeper in order to help our listeners understand how this all too common medication is affecting women’s health today and the potential long term effects so few are talking about. Learn how hormonal birth control works within our bodies, how it can affect our physical and emotional health and the common–yet rarely discussed–side effects of short and long term use. When you’re messing with hormones, you’re messing with fire and far too many women are unknowingly dealing with the effects they may not even know are stemming from their use of hormonal birth control. Our desire for this episode is to begin a conversation about hormonal birth control, not to create fear or pass judgement, but rather to help you to be better informed on a topic that is so rarely talked about outside an OBGYN office and continue to empower you as a woman. Since there will be plenty of questions, on next week’s episode, we’ll share more about how to bounce back from hormonal birth control, our favorite and incredibly effective natural birth control method and some helpful resources to help you learn more and make a choice that best suits you. June 30, 2015 PCOS Diva has a fundamental purpose of empowering and educating women about their health and fertility. That is why I am thrilled to get behind a Kickstarter campaign to turn Holly Grigg Spall’s book, Sweetening the Pill: or How We Got Hooked on Hormonal Birth Control into a documentary. Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein plan to make this thought-provoking book into a documentary. The goal is to empower and educate women so they can make an informed choice about their fertility and birth control. Too often, women are given the birth control pill as a first line treatment for PCOS. They are never informed of the countless side effects they can expect while on the pill or the post-pill syndrome they can expect when they stop taking it. We are rarely educated by physicians about the rhythms of our body and how to regulate our cycles with lifestyle choices and supplements. I had the opportunity to interview author Holly Grigg- Spall this week. Listen to my interview with Holly and learn about: The benefits and side effects of hormonal birth control (the pill and its cousins) Difference between a period on the pill and a period on your own Regulating your period without pharmaceuticals What is body literacy and why it is important How you can help make this documentary project happen!

On today’s show we will be talking about the pill, actually, a book called “Sweetening the Pill” by Holy Grigg-Spall. In the interview, Holly and I talk about my experience with birth control and how scary it was. The reason I want to talk about this today is because millions of healthy women take a powerful drug every day, from mid-teens to menopause. Few know the effects or potential side effects.  Contrary to cultural myth, birth control pills impact every organ and function of the body and yet most women don’t even think of it as a drug. Depression, anxiety, rage, panic attacks, are just a few of the effects of being on the pill. When the pill was first released, it was thought that women would not submit to taking a medication when they weren’t sick. Now the pill is making women sick! Holly Grigg-Spall’s book that we are going to talk about has inspired a documentary! Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein, the producers of “The Business of Being Born” are producing a new documentary, and Holly is the consulting producer and writer. This is a great book and great interview. If you are on birth control pills or any other hormonal birth control, you will definitely want to listen to this episode!

Laura is a veteran sexual and reproductive health advocate who has worked for and volunteered with Planned Parenthood-affiliated organizations in Canada since 1986. She was a Columnist for Troy Health Media, and she is the new editor-in-chief for Re: Cycling, the blog of the Society for Menstrual Cycle Research. As many of you know, I recently interviewed Holly-Grigg Spall, and in that interview, we spoke about her book Sweetening the Pill or how we got hooked on hormonal birth control. Laura actually wrote the forward to this book, and she has also publicly shown her support for the upcoming documentary that Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein are doing based on the book. And she has also charted her cycles for 27 years. Today we will be talking about the health implications of using the Fertility Awareness Method that go beyond the practical aspects of having a hormone-free method of birth control, why rejecting the pill is actually not "anti-feminist" and why it is important for women to have access to accurate information about all forms of birth control regardless of what method they eventually decide to rely on. Topics discussed in today's episode Is it possible for women to learn to use the Fertility Awareness Method confidently and accurately? Why a "possibly fertile day" is actually a fertile day The role that intention plays in the effectiveness of the Fertility Awareness Method The role that the Fertility Awareness plays in helping women to learn body literacy The implications of placing young women on the hormonal birth control before their menstrual cycles have fully matured The importance of helping women transition off of hormonal contraceptives successfully Why questioning "the pill" is not actually "anti-feminist" The benefits of having the ability to understand and interpret your fertile signs Why the pill doesn't "regulate" a woman's cycle or "mimic pregnancy," and what it is actually doing to your hormones Why Laura has publicly endorsed the upcoming documentary Sweetening The Pill by Ricki Lake and Abby Epstein In this podcast episode, Laura described the hormonal changes that a woman experiences naturally throughout her menstrual cycle, and how that changes when a woman is taking hormonal contraceptives. For reference, here is an image of the hormonal cycle during a healthy menstrual cycle. You'll notice that a woman has high levels of estrogen in the first half of her menstrual cycle before ovulation, and high levels of progesterone in the second half of her cycle after she ovulates. The birth control pill has been lauded, and for good reason too, as a way for women to take charge of their reproductive choices. And while it does a fine job of preventing conception, for some women it is not without paying a physical, emotional or psychological price. Our guest today has taken a closer look at the bitter side of the pill and brought to light some common side effects that generally are glossed over. She also shares with us some unique and interesting ways of combining  high tech with good old-fashioned body literacy. Thus helping women to take charge of their fertility by cultivating a deeper awareness and connection to their own natural rhythms without altering their natural hormonal balance.

Guest // Holly Grigg-SpallHost // Kelly Brogan, MDDo you know how The Pill works? Millions of women — healthy women who take this powerful hormonal medication daily from their mid teens to menopause — have absolutely no idea.Cultural mythology and pharmaceutical marketing have sold women on The Pill as liberation, freedom, and independence. Who’s going to tell us that this drug impacts every organ and function in the body? Who will disclose that it’s implicated in depression, anxiety, paranoia, rage, panic attacks, and more?Although some may dare to suggest these women are traitors of feminism, we know better. A growing number of women are looking for non-hormonal alternatives for preventing pregnancy. And brave voices are piercing the veil. Holly Grigg-Spall is fearless, and her courageous advocacy on behalf of women whose stories are too often silenced is a model for others trying to make positive change through health activism. Read the book and get inspired, get angry, and most importantly get information. Sweetening the Pill is exactly the thing needed to energize and mobilize thisimportant women’s health conversation.Holly Grigg-Spall is a writer and women’s health advocate. Her book Sweetening the Pill: Or How We Got Hooked On Hormonal Birth Control has been featured inElle, the Sunday Times Style (UK), Marie Claire, New York magazine, The Guardian, and on CBC and the BBC, amongst others. Holly Grigg-Spall is the author of Sweetening the Pill or How we got hooked on hormonal birth control. If you haven’t had a chance to read this book and you’ve ever had any questions about the pill you need to get your hands on a copy ASAP! Every woman who is on the pill has ever been on the pill, or is considering going on the pill should read this book! Holly uncovers what could be considered the biggest myth about the pill – which is that it has no impact on our emotions and on our overall health. Holly talks about her own experience with the pill and how it took her years to finally realize that the pill was at the root of her emotional symptoms. These are perhaps some of the least talked about impacts of the birth control pill, and don’t expect your doctor to tell you about it! In today’s show, we will be talking all about the pill and the impacts that it can have on the women who take it. I am a fan of informed consent and after listening to this episode you’ll have a much greater understanding of the potential downsides of taking the pill, and what you can do instead. Topics discussed in today's episode Holly describes her experience with the pill and why it took her many years to identify that the pill was actually the cause of her feelings of anxiety, depression as well as numerous other negative side effects she had been experiencing The deep impact the pill can have on your mood and your emotions, and the reasons why you may not make the connection between your experiences and the pill Why women tend to blame themselves when experiencing negative emotions rather than considering that it may actually be a side-effect of hormonal birth control The detrimental and, in some cases, permanent impact the pill can have on your sex drive The significant impact that the pill's steady dose of daily hormones has on a woman's natural hormones, and how this impacts her moods from day to day Why prescribing the pill to younger and younger women may be robbing them of having a full experience of their hormones, their libido, their sexuality and their fertility Why it is so problematic to continue teaching young girls that they are "fertile all the time" The important role that condoms can play when it comes to birth control as well as the prevention of spreading STIs (sexually transmitted infections) Why it is important to know that hormonal contraceptives are not the primary method of birth control everywhere in the world Why hormonal contraceptives are not required to prevent pregnancy The role that fertility awareness can play in helping women to transition from using the pill with the confidence that they can prevent pregnancy naturally Connect with Holly!
