This week's episode covers what I might be doing that's different than what you're doing, duplication, iBuyers, and one big goof with my first seller.
Pat Joseph approaches things from a humanist standpoint, noting that he doesn't think he's any different than someone who emigrated here, like his parents did, particularly given that most people in the U.S. originally came from somewhere else if you go back far enough. He underscores that the benefit of counting immigrants—and fully including them in all ways—is to society at large. The higher the count of people in one's state, the more dollars the state receives. So pragmatically, why would you want to exclude anyone? But politically, he recognizes that there is intentional exclusion of certain groups for political reasons, both from the Census and from voting. Political representation gets allocated alongside money, so the issue is inherently political and, unfortunately, politicized. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nextgenpolitics/message

The album: Betty Davis: They Say I'm Different (1974) As part of our "Women Behaving Boldly" series, we decided to re-air the episode that launched Heat Rocks: our interview with future soul trailblazer and architect Joi Gilliam. This was one the pilot episodes we recorded in the spring of 2017 and when we left the taping, we turned to one another and knew this show had potential. The pairing of artist and album came from Morgan and it was inspired: the undersung Betty Davis, one of the most original and fascinating figures of the 1970s, being feted by future soul artist and Dungeon Family-affiliate Joi, an artist very much cut from Betty's cloth but a generation later. We had a fantastic conversation about the importance and uniqueness of Betty and what she's meant, especially, to waves of Black women artists who've followed in her path in the 40+ years since. On a personal note, this also meant a lot to Oliver because he's written three sets of liner notes on Betty Davis albums (including They Say I'm Different) and interviewed her extensively as part of that. He forever holds a torch for her. Lately The Inventor Dezo created numerous episodes just for you. This special episode's massage will be my way of explaining how what I'm doing is completely different from what most people do with their podcasts. I make podcasts for a living because I love to talk to the world and give them my perspective of life and hopefully I inspire people to chase their dreams. Critics on my podcasts are not true supporters of my podcasts and shouldn't comment about my art if you don't like it. I show love only to my real supporters. Dezo created a platform for people to relax and feel like themselves, I enjoy motivating people to want to succeed in life. From my own shortcomings I will help others and devote myself to that.

The world was not ready for Betty Davis. Before Prince, Madonna, and Beyoncé were boldly owning race, gender, and sexuality in their music, there was Betty Davis: raw, explicit, and brazenly emancipated from everything expected from women in 1974. At 16, Davis moved to New York, became a model and scenester, and fell into a crowd of friends and lovers that included Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton, and Miles Davis (whom she later married — for a year). After her debut album underperformed, she took full creative control and produced her follow-up entirely on her own. The result was They Say I’m Different, a bold, unfiltered album that exposes the power of a woman confident with her gender, race, and sense of self. In this episode, we discuss the impact of this album on society: how it fit into the time it was released, and how it has influenced artists today, both musically and politically.
