In 1953, in the APY lands of South Australia, two atomic weapons were exploded in the desert at a place called Emu Field. A young boy named Yami Lester remembers the ground shaking and a black mist coming over his family's camp. Yami passed away in 2017, but his daughter Karina Lester continues to speak up nationally and internationally about the impacts of nuclear testing in Australia.

A wave of criminal activity in Japan has been blamed on social media. Yami Baito – meaning “dark part-time jobs” in Japanese – refers to job ads posted by criminal gangs on social media and encrypted messaging platforms including Telegram. Jobseekers are blackmailed or enticed with the promise of getting rich quick to commit a range of crimes from scamming elderly people to, at its most extreme, armed robbery. Japanese police have attempted to crack down on Yami Baito by taking down these ads and launching public awareness campaigns. But BBC Trending explores evidence that these recruiters are still operating online. We hear from someone who got sucked into Yami Baito, and a criminal mastermind in charge of recruitment.

Yet, that is the premise of new legislation that would return whole-fat milk with 5 grams of saturated fat per serving, representing a quarter of an entire day's limit, to school lunches across the United States.   While the fat from the pizza, hamburgers, french fries, and other food on cafeteria trays is totaled up, the largest source of saturated fat is being totally disregarded. In this episode we're turning our attention to a couple of talented young men from very different circumstances, each at the beginning of their careers in two very different industries. What they have in common is that they've both been recipients of Nordstrom scholarships. We've created and supported several scholarship programs over the years. Some that are more community-based, like our newly added Blake Nordstrom Scholarship in 2022, help to cover basic needs, including housing and food for highly underserved college students in the Seattle area. Others more directly focus on increasing equity and inclusion in the fashion industry, like our contributions to the Virgil Abloh Scholarship through our partnership with the Fashion Scholarship Fund. Today you'll hear from Joel Bervell, a current medical student at Washington State University, dubbed “The Medical Myth-Buster” by his 1M+ followers on social media. Joel also happens to have spent a summer selling menswear at Nordstrom. After that, I'll chat with two-time Nordstrom Made Scholar and founder of the brand Hikari no Yami, up-and-coming fashion student and designer Jakarie Whitaker. Joel and Jakarie represent only a couple examples of our efforts to support talented and deserving young people, but their stories prove just how important these investments are, and we're extremely proud to have played even a small part in helping them to achieve their goals.
