The always charming and fun iZLER takes some time to talk about his work on Shameless and Revenge. The two extremely popular shows couldn't be more different and we discuss the approach of one versus the other. iZLER also reflects about his big celebratory night at the BMI Film/TV Awards where he brought home some new awards. We also discuss the challenge of recording with a live orchestra every week for his score to Revenge and the scheduling behind it. iZLER also shares some of his favorite TV scores and those that inspire him. Chatting with iZLER is always a complete joy. This is our fourth interview together (3rd for 2013) and we never run out of stuff to talk about in the busy composer's career. iZLER is best known for his work on Shameless and Revenge, and here we discuss the CD release of the Revenge score from Intrada Records. This interview mainly focuses on how he compiled 1 CD from over two seasons of music and all the challenges that encompass that task. I’m excited to announce this Composer Quest double episode with TV composers Fil Eisler (Revenge, Empire, UnReal) and Mac Quayle (American Horror Story, Drive, Mr. Robot). First, we hear from Fil about what he learned while composing for an orchestra during four seasons of Revenge. He shares his tips on getting hired for composing gigs and his tips on scoring the entire arc of a show without getting musically stale. Next, I interview Mac Quayle about how his dance music background (41 #1 Billboard Dance Hits!) influences his film and TV scoring. He gives some music mixing pointers and explains how to build momentum in a song or soundtrack.
This week, I had the chance to catch up with our old friend Fil Eisler - aka, the artist formally known as iZLER... ;) - to talk about his recently released soundtrack album from the hit E4 TV show Revenge. The album contains music from seasons 1 & 2, which is performed by the 50-piece orchestra Fil conducts each week for the show. Eisler's music has become such an integral part of Revenge, with his beautifully dark and complex compositions adding layers of texture to the drama. We also discuss his up-coming work on Arnold Schwarzenegger & James Cameron produced 'Years Of Living Dangerously' documentary, and new CBS show 'Reckless', plus his work on Revenge Season 3. Fil Eisler is Czech-born and English-raised composer who started his career as a touring musician. In this new podcast, we're chatting to iZLER, the composer of the hit US tv show Revenge (airing on E4 in the UK), and the US version of Shameless. iZLER is a UK native, and began his musical career as part of Robbie Williams' band. Now as a television composer, iZLER uses full orchestras for his Revenge compositions, which is increasingly rare in a medium dominated by sample-scores. The orchestras average 50 musicians. This season (the show's second season) he is also incorporating many non-orchestral, studio instruments, which he plays himself. For season two, he's created many new musical themes and moments but this is perhaps best seen in the episode titled "Sacrifice" which for the episode, iZLER based the music off of the rhythm of the Morse code for S.O.S. so that the music was subtly suggesting the episodes dramatic end... 2008 Sundance fellow iZLER (pronounced "eye-zler") is a Czech born, English raised composer and multi instrumentalist, living in Los Angeles, who started his career as a recording and touring musician / collaborator with Robbie Williams (amongst many others), before coming back to studying conducting and orchestration in LA and focusing on film. An authentic voice in both the rock and orchestral worlds, hehas scored a variety of movies including Humboldt County, Robbie Pickering’s Natural Selection (winner, Best Picture, Best Score 2011 SxSW) and Andrew MacLean’s thriller On the Ice, (2011 Sundance Film Festival, winner Silver Bear, Berlin 2011). He was nominated for the “Discovery of the Year” award at the World Soundtrack Awards in 2011. In the world of TV he is currently serving up weekly orchestral scores on ABC's hit drama Revenge. He has written songs and score for numerous other shows including ER, Thief and Chicago Code and regularly contributes score to Showtime’s current hit series Shameless.
