Veteran Crew Chief Mike Kelley joins Davey Segal (5:40) for a reflective and emotional trip down memory lane and deep dive behind Hyak Motorsports with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Kelley explains how the team is punching above their weight right now in the NASCAR Cup Series, how they operate with no technical alliances in todays day and age and why he and Stenhouse have so much trust in one another. Kelley also recalls his early beginnings in motorsports, including some funny stories when he started working for Ernie Irvan (not as a driver, as he initially thought) and emotional ones while working as Michael Waltrip's car chief at Dale Earnhardt Inc. Kelley opens up about why the 2001 Daytona 500 is still emotional for him, the relationship he had with Dale Earnhardt and how the team and sport moved forward following his passing. He also dives into winning the 2004 Cup championship with Kurt Busch at Roush, why earning that title meant so much to him, getting hooked up with Stenhouse Jr. as a young, baby-faced kid, winning back-to-back Xfinity Series championships and more, including his leadership style, why he takes pride in teaching the younger generation, his work with Lake Norman Humane and more. Plus, Davey discusses Christopher Bell's All-Star win, looks ahead to the Coca-Cola 600, Kyle Larson's double attempt and Papa Segal pays homage to 2026 NASCAR Hall of Fame inductee Ray Hendrick.

Jack White finally makes an appearance again as we had once promised! Joana and Emily introduce you to the universe of Mike Kelley, of anarchist and punk teenage and young adult years, who ceaselessly poked at the overwhelming and overpowering world of entertainment. Then they move on to his academic life and career achievements, always marked by a rebellious streak consistently visible in his work about the traps of memory, the failings of education and psychology, and the fine line between fiction and reality. For more about Ghost and Spirit @Tate Modern: https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/mike-kelley-ghost-and-spiritFor more about Mike Kelley: https://mikekelleyfoundation.org/grants/overviewIf you want to support us: https://www.patreon.com/c/exhibitionistaspodcast/membershipInstagram: @exhibitionistas_podcastMusic by: Sarturn

This week: a huge survey of the work of the late linchpin of the Los Angeles contemporary scene Mike Kelley has arrived at Tate Modern in London. We speak to its co-curator Catherine Wood about this enormously influential artist and his visceral and absurd response to popular culture and folk traditions of the US. A major show of Indian art made between 1975 and 1998, a pivotal period of political, social and economic change in the country, opened this week at the Barbican Art Gallery in London. Shanay Jhaveri, a former curator of international art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York who is now head of visual arts at the Barbican, leads us in a tour of show. And this episode's Work of the Week is Raoul Dufy's Thirty Years or La Vie en Rose (1931), a painting made originally for the 30th anniversary of a gallery in Paris, that was owned by the pioneering woman gallerist Berthe Weill. She is the subject of an exhibition at the Grey Art Museum at New York University, which will tour next year to Montreal and Paris. Thurston Moore is one of the most famous names in rock. With Kim Gordon and Lee Ronaldo, he formed Sonic Youth, one of the definitive art rock bands... yes, ART rock. Sonic Youth album covers famously spotlighted artists, from Gerhard Richter's candle on the cover of 1988's Daydream Nation to Raymond Pettibon's cartoon couple on the cover of 1990's Goo to Mike Kelley's stuffed animal on the cover of 1992's Dirty to Marnie Weber's collage for 1998's A Thousand Leaves. Well, now Moore is back, putting out a new dreamy solo album titled Flow Critical Lucidity, and true to form, the cover is another literal work of art: a photo of a sculpture of what appears to be metal helmet, studded with tuning forks. This is a work called Samurai Walkman, by the artist Jamie Nares. Nares is a figure of major cachet herself. She only just had a film retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art here in New York in the summer. Back in 2020, her fantastic 2011 video Street was the first film to be projected on the exterior of the Metropolitan Museum of Art—Thurston Moore, in fact, did the soundtrack to that film. Nares and Moore have a fruitful history of collaboration together, having both come up in the chaotic, experimental No Wave scene of the 1970s, and this week they join Ben Davis on the podcast to discuss. We're also thrilled to announce the launch of Art Market Minute, our new micro-podcast, hosted by news editor Margaret Carrigan. It offers a weekly snapshot of essential art market news, expertly compiled by the Artnet PRO editorial team. You can find it wherever you get your podcasts every Monday.

File Under: Slime by Christopher Michlig — a cultural history of Slime — was recently published by Hat & Beard Editions. What is slime? We are well acquainted with its qualities in conjunction with certain things from which we tend to recoil but to which we are also at times attracted. Despite being everywhere, slime is a surprisingly unexamined cultural phenomenon. File Under: Slime collates a cultural history of “slime” and “sliminess,” with particular emphasis on precedents in pop-culture, contemporary art, ecology, science fiction, literature, critical theory, and cinema. Artist and professor Christopher Michlig's research characterizes slime as a pervasive, oozing, cultural phenomenon, documenting instances of its evolving representations. The appearance of slime in such films as The Blob, Ghostbusters, and Poltergeist are diligently and humorously analyzed, commercial and graphic design precedents are incorporated, and the work of such artists as Lynda Benglis, Cindy Sherman, Robert Smithson, Sterling Ruby, and Jason Rhoades are discussed. Alongside a multitude of visual references, File Under: Slime is supplemented with literary and theoretical references from such writers as Jean Paul Sartre, Julia Kristeva, Mike Kelley, Rosalind Krauss, Laura Mulvey, and others. +++ SLIME: A NATURAL HISTORY by SUSANNE WEDLICH — a different but like-minded cultural history of slime — was also recently published by Melville House in New York. This groundbreaking, witty, and eloquent exploration of slime will leave you appreciating the nebulous and neglected sticky stuff that covers our world, inside and out. Slime exists at the interfaces of all things: between the organs and layers in our bodies, and between the earth, water, and air in the world, and is often produced in the fatal encounter between predator and prey. In this fascinating, ground-breaking book, Wedlich leads us on a scientific journey through the 3-billion-year history of slime—from the part it played in the evolution of life on this planet to the way it might feature in the post-human future. She also explores the cultural and emotional significance of slime, from its starring role in the horror genre to its subtle influence on Art Nouveau. +++ Susanne Wedlich studied biology and political science in Munich and has worked as a writer in Boston and Singapore. She is currently a freelance science journalist for Der Spiegel and National Geographic. She lives in Munich. Christopher Michlig, meanwhile, makes work in a wide range of media, including collage, printmaking, sculpture, and film. His work has been reviewed and featured in The Los Angeles Times, Mousse Magazine, Saatchi Online, Flavorpill, and New City and exhibited nationally and internationally.  Michlig received an MFA from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, California and he is currently Associate Professor and area Coordinator of Core Studio at the University of Oregon, Eugene. The authors caught up this spring to discuss their books and mutual fascination with slime.

Jack Skelley is a writer and a poet that has been publishing books since the 1980s. His career began in the early '80s in LA when he worked at the Venice-based literary and arts center Beyond Baroque. Beyond Baroque was put on the map by Dennis Cooper who created a scene around it that included late poet and performance artist Bob Flanagan, the late conceptual artist Mike Kelley, the hilarious late poet Ed Smith, Guggenheim Fellowship winning poet Amy Gerstler, painter and novelist Benjamin Weissman, and Jack himself. The crux of this conversation revolves around the publication of Jack's new book, The Complete Fear of Kathy Acker, which was released by Semiotext(e)in May. Jack started writing the book in the 1980s, and as such follows a protaganist named Jack as he traverses the Los Angeles art world of the eighties that Jack himself was indeed a part of. The figure of the late writer Kathy Acker who provides the book's namesake only actually appears briefly in the novel but her method of postmodern literary collage is assumed as a means for Jack to deconstruct the signifiers of the Los Angeles dream factory and the formation of mass culture as the protagonist flits from book readings to punk rock shows to art openings to misbegotten sexcapades. It's a weird and thrilling novel. Jack and Adam here discuss this new book, Los Angeles, Kathy Acker, locating an avant-gardist sentiment in pop culture, the problematization of male heterosexual desire in literature, fictionalizing historical figures, Mike Kelley, SST records, punk rock, and much more. Reflecting on his past, Mike shares how balancing ambition with transparency is critical to success. Listen to the episode to learn more about Mike's auditing experience, falling into cyber security, and his advice for CISOs when interviewing.Listen to Steve and Mike discuss how leaders should assist their team with career development and why “fake it until you make it” makes for bad career advice:Meet Mike (1:44)Host Steve Moore introduces our guest today, Mike Kelley.Mike shares his role in the enterprise and consumer-based security field and how his duties differ from those in an internal security environment. Although he would say that consumer-based security is not clearly defined, his goal is to keep all things related to the consumer secure, in addition to the typical CISO goals. His Start (3:36)Before working at E.W. Scripps, Mike worked at KPMG, one of the big four firms. There, Mike performed external audits but also did some compliance consulting as well.Although no one wanted an auditor there, especially to answer his questions, Mike had to work on building a rapport with people in difficult situations. Through this role, Mike was exposed to numerous companies, allowing him to learn constantly. He may not have wanted to start in audits if he could do it all again, but this experience prepared him for his cyber security career.Adapting With Transparency (9:02)Mike has become comfortable with being uncomfortable and transparent when he doesn't know something. When he got his CISO job, he told HR that this position was new to him and that he had a lot to learn. Being confident enough to say “I don't know” is Mike's mental motto because he knows he can adapt to new challenges. Ultimately anything is learnable as long as you push yourself, a mentality he encourages in his team. The Burn the Boats Method (17:42)After reflecting on his career decisions, including telling a company to fire him if he didn't succeed as a director, Steve presses Mike on how he would react to someone sharing this approach. If one of Mike's employees wanted to try a position out and see what happens, Mike would like to ease them into that role. He would let them transition through responsibilities first before changing that person's title. Ultimately, trying and failing is okay, but Mike wants his team to fail soft versus hard.Falling Into Cyber Security (21:42)After looking for cyber security jobs for three years, Mike eased into this field through a position in compliance. Working side-by-side with security professionals, Mike was able to dip his toes. After lunch with his manager, he was offered the CISO role, and Mike immediately said yes. Mike admitted he didn't know what he was doing but was encouraged to take this job.Rolling With It (25:01)Steve asks Mike if he ever wishes he said no when offered the CISO job. Mike knew this was the field he wanted to pursue, and he felt comfortable being transparent about his experience.Interview Questions (31:18)If you are a new CISO wanting to ask good questions in an interview, Mike suggests asking the purpose of that role at that company. Another helpful question concerns the company's approach to trying new things and handling challenges. The Definition of Success (34:13)When evaluating a company during an interview, it's essential to find out what that company's definition of success is.
