Min 23.

RIPLEY, which premiered on Netflix in April 2024, is a neo-noir psychological thriller television series created, written and directed by Steven Zaillian, based on Patricia Highsmith's 1955 crime novel THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY. The series starred Andrew Scott, Johnny Flynn and Dakota Fanning. In late 1950s New York, Tom Ripley, a down-at-the-heels con man, is hired by a wealthy man to convince his prodigal son to return home from Italy. But Tom's introduction to Dickie Greenleaf's comfortable and leisurely life abroad turns out to be "the first step into a complex life of deceit, fraud and murder. The composer for the series score is Jeff Russo, the renowned award-winning composer, songwriter, guitarist, vocalist, and music producer whose versatile talent has left an indelible mark on the entertainment industry, from captivating TV series to compelling film scores and beyond.

Composer Jeff Russo sits down for a brand new Film.Music.Media conversation!   Jeff returns as a guest to take us into two of his recent scores. We dive into the miniseries Love & Death, and how Jeff approached the drama based on the real-life true crime story. Jeff talks about what it was like coming onto the project late and what his process was with crafting a music narrative that wasn't too heavy-handed. Jeff also explains his process for navigating song placements to create a seamless flow.   We also talk about the critically-acclaimed Mrs. Davis, which Jeff also scored. Mrs. Davis was a very different approach in that it went all in with bending genres, and we explore if genres even have the same connotation or meaning anymore or do they effectively box in storytellers. Jeff talks about how much fun he had scoring Mrs. Davis, and how he built the arc of the series musically.   Jeff also gives us a little of what we have to look forward to coming up as he is deep into working with Noah Hawley again on Fargo: Season 5 and Hawley's upcoming Alien series for FX.   A Film.Music.Media Production | Produced & Presented by Kaya Savas

The third season of Star Trek: Picard had a lot on its shoulders: It was the final season of its show, as well as a bombastic, blockbuster-level bow for the cast of Star Trek: The Next Generation. For its first two seasons, Patrick Stewart and the showrunners shied away from Starfleet uniforms and shiny utopias, and Jeff Russo's score reflected that (as we've discussed with him on this very show). But showrunner Terry Matalas had a different vision in mind for Season 3: Celebrate the crew whose adventures captured generations of fans, with a big, brassy sendoff meant to give them the finale they finally deserved.   And that they did, thanks to the tireless work of composers Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann. Together, they handled hours of big orchestral sounds, crafting new themes for ships and characters like the Titan and Jack Crusher. At the same time, there was decades' worth of callbacks to Star Trek's musical legacy that needed acknowledgment, from Jerry Goldsmith's TNG theme to the movie-esque sweep of James Horner and Dennis McCarthy. Through plenty of blood, sweat, and tears, they pulled it off, crafting an immense body of work that fit snugly within the legacy of Star Trek while incorporating musical Easter eggs big and small into its superstructure.   This week on the podcast, Barton and Wiedmann join me for a nice long chat about the hectic production process, the many Trekkian cues they had to blend together, and the value of having creative collaborators (like Matalas) who know exactly what they want.   You can find Stephen Barton and Frederik Wiedmann at their official websites.   The entirety of Picard Season 3 is available for streaming on Paramount+. You can also listen to the score on your preferred music streaming service courtesy of Lakeshore Records.

Music in Star Trek From Alexander Courage's “bright galactic beguine” in The Original Series to Jeff Russo's churning, Game of Thrones-style theme for Discovery, the music of Star Trek has always embodied the spirit of its time, as much as it looks to the future. Rick Berman famously sacked composer Ron Jones from The Next Generation because he felt his scores drew too much attention to themselves. In his mind, the underscore should be a kind of wallpaper, as unobtrusive as the soft pastel carpet stuck to the walls of the Enterprise-D. And yet the music of Star Trek—in particular the film scores by Jerry Goldsmith, James Horner, and others—has become an iconic part of the franchise's cultural legacy, and of popular culture more broadly. Jeff Russo has composed music for sci-fi fantasy shows like Star Trek Discovery and Picard, The Umbrella Academy, Altered Carbon, For All Mankind, and Lucifer. But he didn't set out to be known as a composer of SF projects, or even a composer at all. He began as a rock musician, and found he had a knack for writing music for the screen because he understood that music plays a crucial role in grounding unreal stories in the emotions of the characters. We talk about his approaching to scoring and why it's so challenging to write a theme song. Our ad partner is Multitude.
