"Noyce-vember," our month-long tribute to journeyman director Phillip Noyce, concludes! So how did Noyce follow up the disappointment of 1997's The Saint (which we looked at last time), you ask? Simple - by recruiting one of Hollywood's biggest stars, Denzel Washington, teaming him with a young starlet on the brink of mega-stardom named Angelina Jolie, and putting them together in an adaptation of a recent hit crime-thriller novel. Sounds like a good plan, right? Except he ended up with another failed franchise starter! What's the deal?? Well, we're taking a look at The Bone Collector to see if it's a truly worthy entry in the "90s serial killer movie" canon, or just another tired Se7en wannabe. Here at Failure to Franchise, we love a dependable journeyman. And that's why we're kicking off "Noyce-vember," a one month tribute to one of Hollywood's (well, technically, Australia's) most unsung journeymen directors, Phillip Noyce. First up, his 1997 adaptation of The Saint, a popular vigilante character who had already graced the world of literature, radio, film, and - most notably - a beloved '60s television series starring Roger Moore. For this wannabe movie blockbuster version, Noyce recruited Val Kilmer as the titular master of disguise. After 1995's Batman Forever and Heat culminated a fairly undeniable cinematic run for Kilmer, a few misses in 1996 meant The Saint - the movie he chose to do instead of another Batman film - was an important moment in his career...the moment where moving forward  he would either be confirmed as a legitimate, franchise-launching leading man, or seen more a comeback-seeking former star more known for his alleged difficulty to work with. Well, we all know how that worked out. But should The Saint have elevated Kilmer to another level? We discuss this, and much more! In the conversation, she discusses how her skillset as a cinematographer informed her directing, how she aimed to reach beyond the constraints of a typical biopic to create something more complex and working with Kate Winslet to capture Lee as a multidimensional character. The film tells the true story of Lee Miller, who in the 1940s decides to abandon her career as a fashion model and become Vogue's war correspondent during World War II. We are going to be looking at the original Jack Ryan trilogy that consists of The Hunt For Red October, Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger that starred Alec Baldwin and Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan. The main character created by thriller author Tom Clancy who appeared in multiple books by the author. The three early Jack Ryan films were seminal thrillers of the early to mid 90s. Proper Dad thrillers. Fun and memorable films with excellent all star casts that included actors such as Sean Connery, Sam Neill, Tim Curry, James Earl Jones, Scott Glenn, Fred Thompson, Sean Bean and Anne Archer. All three films are well directed by directors who understood the action and thriller genres: John McTiernan and Phillip Noyce. There's always some political and spy intrigue in these films plus some good action. We hope you continue to enjoy this new Trilogies Series we're doing and we also hope you enjoy this episode. Directed by Phillip Noyce, this film stars Rutger Hauer as Nick Parker, a blind swordsman whose skills and senses are as sharp as his blade. Blind Fury mixes elements of comedy and drama into its action-packed narrative, creating a unique and entertaining viewing experience.Nick Parker, blinded during the Vietnam War, is rescued by local villagers who teach him the art of sword fighting. Upon his return to the United States, Parker embarks on a mission to help an old war buddy. The plot thickens as he finds himself protecting his friend's son from a group of dangerous drug dealers. The film is essentially a modern take on the classic blind swordsman trope, inspired by the Japanese "Zatoichi" film series. Nick uses his disability to his advantage, catching his enemies off guard with his uncanny ability to 'see' using his other heightened senses. The narrative follows him as he navigates various challenges and confrontations, delivering justice with his cane sword. At its core, Blind Fury explores themes of disability and resilience. It portrays its protagonist not as a victim of his circumstances but as a capable and resourceful hero. The film challenges typical perceptions of disability, presenting a character who overcomes his limitations to protect and fight for those he cares about. As dads, Blind Fury offers a fun, slightly cheesy action movie that's great for a light-hearted movie night with older kids. It provides a platform to discuss the importance of not underestimating people based on their disabilities and the ways that challenges can lead to unexpected strengths. For fans of classic action films and Rutger Hauer, Blind Fury is a must-watch for its unique premise, memorable protagonist, and entertaining execution. It's a film that not only delivers thrills but also packs a good amount of heart and humor. So, whether you're revisiting this '80s action gem or discovering it for the first time, join us as we delve into the quirky and action-packed world of Blind Fury. It's a journey through a film that proves seeing isn't always believing.

This week, we're closing out an unsuccessful hunt with a movie about a man with no name, no identity, no family, and no reason to really be too interested in him as the main character of a film. Yes, it's 1997's The Saint, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, and starring Val Kilmer, Elisabeth Shue, Rade Serbedzija, Henry Goodman, Alun Armstrong, Valeri Nikolaev, Charlotte Cornwell and Emily Mortimer. It's a movie that pairs up a man with no inner life and a woman with no self-esteem as our action-thriller romantic leads, and despite everything working against them in this script, Kilmer and Shue still manage to be quite charming. It's a merciful end to Come On Feel The Noyce, as we're finally done with Phil's films, going out on a movie that could very well make podcast history as the first film to be denied entry in its bid to join the ADHD-DVD canonical classics. Plus: we go deep on the annoying discourse that dominated the week, as Barbie is slighted by the Oscars by only being nominated for 8 including Best Picture, while Tenet finally gets granted a theatrical re-release, and previous pod fodder The Accountant has an unlikely sequel on the way. Other works discussed in this episode include I.S.S., Paul Thomas Anderson's filmography (particularly Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Licorice Pizza), and all the movies Oscar actually snubbed, like Past Lives, The Holdovers, Asteroid City, May-December, and The Iron Claw. Oh, and Men. Alex Garland's MEN. Coming up next month on the show, February Is For Lovers, and we will be treating it as such, as the four Fridays in Feb will see us cover Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise, Before Sunset and Before Midnight, before a month full of romance ends with canon consideration of Leslye Headland's modern rom-com classic Sleeping With Other People. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!! #HillaryBarbie

This week we are experiencing some technical difficulties because Apple absolutely wrecked my audio set-up with an unnecessary OS update that doesn't seem to have made anything better. That's beside the point, but I did want to apologize off the hop. Anyway. The Hunt For The American James Bond continues both in our hearts and on the show, as we dip our toes into the chilly waters of Lake Jack Ryan one last time with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, directed once again by Phillip Noyce, based on the book by Tom Clancy, and starring Harrison Ford, Willem Dafoe, Joaquim de Almeida, Henry Czerny, Harris Yulin, Donald Moffat, Miguel Sandoval, Benjamin Bratt, Anne Archer, Thora Birch and James Earl Jones. Patriot Games set the bar pretty low, and this movie comfortably clears it. But it doesn't hit the heights of Hunt For Red October either, leaving us with a somewhat satisfying if not overly long political thriller about drug cartels and American intelligence. There's room to have fun there if you're willing to acknowledge how skeezy the CIA actually is, but perhaps we weren't there yet in '94. Other works discussed in this episode include Poor Things, The Holdovers, Edge of Tomorrow, Top Gun: Maverick, The Flash, and 24. Plus, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One gets renamed for streaming. This is the third ADHD-DVD film with a Steven Zaillian writing credit. The previous were Mission: Impossible and Gangs of New York. If you'd like to watch the film along with us, good luck! It is not available for streaming in Canada, but is rentable on YouTube. We'll be back next week to wrap up the month with a third consecutive Phillip Noyce movie, the admittedly very goofy Val Kilmer vehile The Saint (1997) that is also sadly not available for streaming in Canada. We'll be joined by gifted improviser (and J Mo's childhood friend) Mica Prazak to discuss whether it deserves to be added to the canon, or loaded into a cannon. Until then, see you at the movies!!

This week as a schismatic sect is caught tunnelling underground in New York, we're dealing with a schismatic sect of the Irish variety, intent on burying themselves in pursuit killing of Jack Ryan. Yes, the hunt for the American James Bond continues with 1992's Patriot Games, directed by Phillip Noyce, and starring Harrison Ford, Sean Bean, Anne Archer, Thora Birch, Patrick Bergin, Samuel L. Jackson, Polly Walker, James Earl Jones and Richard Harris. Yes Alec Baldwin has been turfed from the franchise, replaced by the man Paramount always wanted in the role from the start, and Ford does a great job of lending Jack gravity that Baldwin simply can't offer. Unfortunately, the movie around him only gets worse as it goes along, ending with a final reel that feels cut on from a different movie altogether. Meanwhile, Hayley's hyperfocused on the Golden Globes and the start of Awards Season, while Justin's getting deep into Percy Jackson & The Olympians. Other works discussed in this episode include Akeelah and the Bee, No Clue, Bottle Rocket, Foe, The Thing, Cape Fear, Spotlight, Prisoners and Zodiac among others. If you'd like to watch the film before listening to us talk about it, and this week we don't really recommend it, you can find it streaming on Paramount+ at the time of publication. We'll be back next week to wrap up our foray into the Tom Clancy-verse with 1994's Clear and Present Danger, as Harrison Ford becomes the only actor in the history of the franchise who got to play Jack Ryan twice on the big screen. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!

Podcast begins with a general discussion about the recent submarine disaster, Bill Paxton stops by to say hello. When Jennifer and I first met, it was doing a session with my old friend Bill, who introduced himself by putting her in the submarine he took to visit the Titanic. She didn't know who she was at first, nor why he was showing her the ship. He talks generally about how things went awry, and cites his pal James Cameron.  Then Charles Grodin stops by to talk about his godson RJ and his recent graduation, as well as a prediction that he will become a music composer.  Jennifer could not have known that we were talking about exactly that topic this past week. Then I had a question about a podcast I did with Simon Bown - it will air on July 10th, where we have a conversation with Jesus. At some point this topic of a Roman soldier who "looked like Jesus" and "took his place" came up - interesting to hear this twist on that twist, as Archangel Michael does the talking. As Jennifer notes, she has no motive to make this up - she's reporting, but in essence, he gives another spin on the story which is recounted in "The Greatest Story Never Told as Told by Jesus and Those who Knew him."  According to Michael - the story is 98% accurate. So there's two percent to continue to learn. Eventually we get to a conversation about Julian Sands and the recent discovery of what appears to be his remains.  As noted, we spoke to him not long after he disappeared, and he pointed out again that he still exists, and is sending messages of love to his wife and children. It's sad to think he's gone, but good to hear he's enjoying the flipside. I met him briefly through Jan Sharp and Phillip Noyce, we had lunch to continue some of our deep conversation and stayed in touch over the years, not as much as I wish we could have. But either way, good to hear that he's been found and people can go about having some closure. "Don't be afraid to climb" he says. Good advice for everyone.

This is our 8th anniversary of doing our sessions together, and the second anniversary of our podcast. Jennifer and I met 8 years ago, and have been filming our conversations with the flipside weekly. Portions of the film Hacking the Afterlife has some of our sessions, our books include BACKSTAGE PASS TO THE FLIPSIDE 1, 2 and 3, and TUNING INTO THE AFTERLIFE. The most recent book is demonstrating how meditation can allow access to the flipside; divinecouncils.com In this podcast, we asked our moderator on the flipside Luana Anders who wanted to chat with us, and she introduced Christopher Plummer.  An actor's actor, Christopher left the stage in 2021, his most recent turn was in Knives Out.   I didn't know much about him prior to the podcast, but used the internet in real time to see that he was survived by his daughter and wife of 50 years.  In Christopher's words, he was "sucked in" to visit our class, where Luana Anders is the moderator. Luana worked in over 300 films and TV shows, and knows many actors the Christopher knows. My own connection was through the film director Robert Wise. So I asked him some questions about Robert and was surprised to hear the answers. He said that primarily the reason he wanted to come forward today was to remind people that their loved ones are never far away, that it's always difficult during the holiday season, and he wanted to remind people that they are never far away. Then Heath Ledger came forward, and we had a lively chat with him.  I had not met him, but know people who knew him, and he's as charming and funny on the flipside as he was in life.  He too wanted to mention how proud he is of his family, those loved ones who know that he still exists and converse with him. He gave a shout out to my friend Phillip Noyce, as they had planned to make a film together "Dirt Music."  I was aware that they had worked on a project together, apparently it was Heath's death that ended that possibility. Our loved ones are not gone. They're just not here. Not far away - are available. Take the time to learn how to chat with them. Hypnotherapy, meditation or mediumship are three methods that I've been filming for over ten years.  This is like having a cell phone to the flipside, and it's thrilling to see Jennifer doing the kind of work she can do. Happy holidays.

linktr.ee/CatchingUpOnCinema This November is “No Nut November” at Catching Up On Cinema! All month long, we'll be reviewing erotic thrillers from the 80's and 90's! This week Trevor does a solo review of Phillip Noyce's, Sliver (1993)! Released almost exactly one year after her star making turn in the massively successful Basic Instinct (1992), Sliver (1993) saw Sharon Stone return to the erotic thriller subgenre, albeit without the benefit of the one-two punch of Paul Verhoeven's slick and wildly excessive directorial flourishes, and Jan De Bont's sumptuous lighting and lensing. Once again working from a screenplay penned by genre veteran and Hollywood sleaze maestro, Joe Esztherhas; Sliver sees Sharon Stone cast not a femme fatale as in case of the pairings earlier effort, Basic Instinct, but as a weirdly passive, shy woman that may be more sexually adventurous than even she would care to admit. A murder-mystery whodunit that often feels utterly uninterested in detective work or suspense building, Sliver somewhat delivers on the eroticism and thrills one would expect from an erotic thriller, however the connective fiber between the elements, so essential to creating an effective and cohesive genre film, are sorely lacking. Dull and aimless in instances where its handsome and talented cast still have their clothes on, Sliver is not bereft of interesting thematic content or compelling performances, though at the end of the day it all feels very slight and surface level, and sadly doesn't amount to a film that could be considered much more than “adequate” or “serviceable”. Reportedly a troubled production in the form of the MPAA requiring massive reedits to avoid an NC-17 rating, and negative test audience reactions compelling the producers to insist on changing the identity of the killer and the entire ending well into post-production, Sliver is a film that was restructured within an inch of its life, such that its a small miracle that it was even able to limp its way into theaters as a coherent narrative at all. Many point to Basic Instinct (1992) as being at or near the pinnacle of the erotic thriller boom of the era, and appropriately enough, Sharon Stone and Joe Esztheras' very next project together, Sliver (1993), would go on to represent the cresting of the wave for the genre.
