This week, we talk to composer Mac Quayle, who burst onto the scene in 2015 with his Emmy-winning score to Sam Esmail's mysterious, genre-bending series Mr. Robot. Since then, he's enjoyed healthy collaborations with Esmail and fellow showrunner Ryan Murphy, for whom he's scored everything from American Horror Story and Pose to 9-1-1.   For his latest score, Quayle reunites with Esmail for a film this time -- Netflix's eerie adaptation of Rumaan Alam's 2020 novel Leave the World Behind. Following a well-off couple (Julia Roberts and Ethan Hawke) on a vacation to a remote Airbnb with their two children, the film takes a bizarre turn when the home's owner, G.H. (Mahershala Ali), and his daughter (Myha'la) return and insist on staying there. Meanwhile, the power goes out, deer start behaving strangely, and one gets the sense the world is coming to an end.   That sense is borne out in Quayle's approach, constructed from a custom library of sounds he built specifically for the movie. And now, Quayle talks to us about building a score to suit the end of the world.   You can find Mac Quayle at his official website.   Leave the World Behind is currently streaming on Netflix, and you can hear the score on your preferred streamer courtesy of Netflix Music.   Support us on Patreon   Follow us on Twitter/X at @rightoncuepod

Following up from The Best Of Hex Hector Part 1 comes The Best Of Hex Hector Part 2. This second part covers his remixes that move into the higher energy, higher BPM range. The set kicks off at 132 BPM and progresses up to the high 130's by the end. There are some absolute classic tracks here from artists such as Shannon, Faith Hill, Gloria Estefan, Whitney Houston, Angie Stone, Celine Dion and Britney Spears. I couldn't decide which Jennifer Lopez track to use so I put two on - ""Love Don't Cost A Thing" and her monster hit "Waiting For Tonight". I've placed a few male vocals on here as well including Ricky Martin, Kevin Aviance and Marcus. This set highlights the partnership that Hex Hector had with Dezrok as they worked together on many of these mixes. There are also a number of HQ2 mixes with Mac Quayle. This set is high NRG from start to finish and encapsulates the style I came to love from the one and only Hex Hector. I've been looking forward to doing a Hex Hector anthology for a long time but he has such a massive catalogue of remixes, I wasn't sure as to how I would approach it. I decided to split it into two parts. The first part being remixes with BPM's from 126 to 132 and the second part with remixes from 132 and up. That being said, it took me three weeks to select a body of mixes for part one and narrow that down to the final 32 tracks featured on this first edition. From what I've been able to find out, Hex Hector (Hector Ortiz) started producing music back in 1992 in New York. His sound was synonymous throughout the 90's and 2000's where he became famous for remixing songs for artists such as Deborah Cox, Whitney Houston, Gloria Estefan, Enrique Iglesias, Jennifer Lopez, Celine Dion, Ricky Martin and the list goes on. For anyone who was going out to clubs in that era, you would be well aware of his mixes of songs such as "Nobody's Supposed To Be Here" by Deborah Cox and "Heartbreak Hotel" by Whitney Houston. Hex's mixes took us on a journey and generally clocked in at 8 minutes plus. Not like the 'extended mixes' of today which barely make it to 3 minutes. He mastered the drop and build in infectious house/club mixes and playing one of his mixes (of which I played many) would guarantee the dance floor being full. Hex worked with a few regular producers such as Dezrok, Soul Solution and Jonathan Peters and he even formed a production duo with Mac Quayle called HQ2. The man is a true legend of the club world and this first edition of the best of Hex Hector features 32 all time classic house and club remixes over 4 hours which are guaranteed to keep you moving with your hands in the air. Similar strikes occurred earlier this year at Indiana University in Bloomington, are occurring in universities like New School in New York, as well as the system across the UK where the University College Union's 70,000 members have voted to strike.

Music featured in the programme is taken from the nominees for the Best Gaming Music category, which are: GHOST OF TSUSHIMA by Ilan Eshkeri, Shigeru Umebayashi, Peter Scaturro; HADES by Darren Korb; THE LAST OF US PART II by Gustavo Santaolalla, Mac Quayle, Scott Hanau; MARVEL'S SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES by John Paesano, Scott Hanau, Alex Hackford; ORI AND THE WILL OF THE WISPS by Gareth Coker; and SACKBOY: A BIG ADVENTURE by Jay Waters, Joe Thwaites, Joanna Skorupa. Nominees for the Game of the Year include ANIMAL CROSSING: NEW HORIZONS which has proved such a hit during a year of lockdown. Louise looks at these, and more, listing the winners. In Louise's words: "Gaming was such a lifeline for so many people over 2020 and the 2021 British Academy Games Awards nominations reflect that. I don't think many of us would feel quite as connected to friends if we hadn't spent months fishing together in Animal Crossing: New Horizons or sharing the emotional web of The Last of Us Part 2. Vitally, 2020's games are a clear indicator of the diversity possible in this industry. I can't wait to explore the incredible scores nominated in the Best Gaming Music category. From the heroic joy of Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales to the indie sword-spinning action of Hades, these are soundtracks to define a year like no other."

There has been much ink spilled over the Queen of Disco that it doesn't bare repeating. Donna Summer is an icon who laid down the path for future artists like Madonna, Britney Spears, Lady Gaga, and many others to use their sexuality and create their own brand on their own terms. Regardless of the much-hyped manipulations behind the scenes, she was a willing participant and took full advantage of her success up until the point she wrestled herself away from Neil Bogart's Casablanca records leaving a legacy that up until that point — no other female artist had achieved. Today, Donna Summer has a legion of fans both young and old and serves as an inspiration to many would-be female artists who whether they realize it or not — are deeply indebted to her trailblazing career. The Queen is no stranger to Party Favorz, who ranks her at the top of our leading ladies along with Diana Ross and Cher. This tribute set focuses on her work in the 90's through the early millennium and takes a deep dive into updated versions of her back catalog. If many of these tracks are unfamiliar to you or your era was the 70's — look no further than the Casablanca Years set I put out in 2015. There you will find all of her radio and club hits in probably one of the best tribute sets ever laid down honoring the Queen. [youtube v="sLFVMOSdHRQ"] When the word "Ultimate" is dropped into the title of one of these series — it's because it's comprehensive and really long. Leaving no stone unturned, I poured through countless bootlegs and official remixes to put this thing together. Many of the songs on here may be new to even her most ardent supporters. These past couple of Diva Series I've put out have been a bitch to mix and this one was no exception. There's a vast array of styles here from modern-day electro-pop to circuit tribal house and straight up funky house. Yet, it all feels cohesive and frankly — just works.   Ugh, this was difficult. I went through old end-of-the-year lists, checked Spotify playlists, looked up other folks' lists and dug up old mixes. There is just no easy way to sort through soooooo much music. But I finally ended up with something that is sort of coherent.  I decided not to call this mix Best of the Decade as I have done with mixes for years. I've realized that the "Best" label is not accurate.  I'm sure I missed a ton of albums and I feel bad leaving some out. So these are my favorites that provide a good cross-section of ambient throughout the decade.  Initially, I had harder electronic artists like Jon Hopkins & Rival Consoles on the list but I realized that I'd rather split those off into a smaller, favorite electronic album of the decade lineup. I'm not sure if I'll make a mix for the electronic favs but I'll at least post the list soon.  The first thing that you'll notice about this mix is it's looooong. This is the longest mix I've done other than Endless Ambient, which was 5 or 6 hours long. This one clocks in at about 3 hours and 19 minutes. I basically was too lazy to make 2 mixes so we'll all have to put up with this monster which is actually kind of cool having this large of a collection of great music.  Here's the list in alphabetical order: 1. 36 - Memories in Widescreen (2010) 2. 36 - Sine Dust EP (2015) 3. 36 - Tomorrow's Explorers (2017) 4. 2814 - 新しい日の誕生 (2016) 5.   Here's another impossible task - compiling a mix of the best film scores of the decade. Like any of my other year-end mixes, this is not really a "Best" mix. It's a collection of scores that I listened to a lot and fit within my ambient aesthetic.  The tracks are laid out chronologically from when the films were released. Starting with Monsters in 2010 to Ex Machina in 2015 and finishing up with American Woman in 2019  There are scores from four TV series included in this mix - Halt and Catch Fire, Mr. Robot, Stranger Things, and The Knick. On the Geektown Radio podcast this week I am joined by Bex from TristaBytes to chat through the usual weekly tv, film and gaming news, plus a look at the next week on tv. We also have an exclusive interview with Mac Quayle, Ryan Murphy's "go-to" composer for a host of series from the recently released Netflix show 'The Politician', to 'American Horror Story', to 'Pose'. He also writes the music for Sam Esmail's brilliant 'Mr. Robot' which returns for the fourth and final season this week. 'The Politician', which stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Jessica Lange and Ben Platt, follows Payton Hobart, a wealthy student from Santa Barbara, who has dreamed of becoming president of the United States since the age of 7 but must first navigate the most treacherous political landscape of all: Saint Sebastian High School.Aside from 'The Politician', Mac scores returning Golden Globe-winning suspense-thriller 'Mr. Robot', starring Christian Slater and Rami Malek, for which he won an Emmy in 2016. He also works on 'American Horror Story', for which he received his first Emmy nomination on his score on 'American Horror Story: Freak Show', along with 80s NYC ball scene drama, 'Pose', and procedural drama '9-1-1' which he co-composes with Todd Haberman. In 2017, he received two Emmy nominations for his main title and score in Ryan Murphy’s hit series, 'Feud: Bette and Joan', starring Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon. The same year, Quayle received his second consecutive World Soundtrack Award nomination for his work on 'Feud: Bette and Joan', 'Mr. Robot' and 'Scream Queens', starring Emma Roberts and Jamie Lee Curtis. His other past credits include 'The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story', starring Penelope Cruz, Edgar Ramirez, Ricky Martin and Darren Criss, and the Emmy-winning 'The People v. From the time I started DJing in 2000 right through until around 2010 there wasn't a remix by Hex Hector that I didn't purchase and play - many times I wouldn't even have to listen to it in the record store before I purchased it. Hex, along with his engineer and producing partner Mac Quayle put out an astounding number of quality dance tracks in that period so trying to fit all of my favorite ones here was impossible, but everyone that I have chosen, if you frequently nightclubs back into the 1990's and 2000's, you will remember having danced to on numerous dance floors - and all would garner huge gleeful responses from the dance for when the listener would realize what song was being mixed in. I'm sure by now that most of you have seen or heard about the TV show "Stranger Things" on Netflix.  If you haven't seen it, definitely check it out. It totally rips off Close Encounters, ET, Poltergeist, Stand By Me, Firestarter, etc. but it doesn't matter because it's ripping them off in a loving way. The same is true for the soundtrack.  It's got a great analog synth sound reminiscent of Tangerine Dream and John Carpenter soundtracks.  The minute I heard the Stranger Things theme I knew I had to make a mix featuring the new retro sound. Even though the music in this mix sounds like it's from the 70s or 80s all of it is new, with most cuts being from 2015 & 2016.  In addition to the Stranger Things theme I of course had to include the Tangerine Dream remix of it. Thanks to Mike of Ambient Music Guide for the heads up on the soundtrack from Halt & Catch Fire by Paul Haslinger. It's fantastic!  Another soundtrack that made it's way into the mix is from Mac Quayle music for Mr. Robot - more analog loveliness. I hope everyone enjoys the mix, I know had a ball putting it together. Cheers! I can't think of no better way to offset a nu-school Diva induction with an old school induction that frankly, is long overdue. Gloria Estefan is a multi-Grammy winner with several top ten hits including Conga (her-trademark song performed with Miami Sound Machine), Rhythm Is Gonna Get You, 1-2-3, Get On Your Feet, Anything For You, Here We Are, Coming Out of the Dark, Oye! and Party Time to name a few. She's won an MTV Video Music award, a couple of ACE awards, an American Music award and multiple Billboard awards. She was inducted into the BMI  Songwriters Hall of Fame and is listed as one of VH1's top 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. With a resume like that, it's no wonder she has garnered a great deal of respect as a mover and shaker within the recording industry. I'm not here to pile on more accolades, or maybe I am. Oh no, say it ain't so!  Yup, we have finally arrived at the final set paying tribute to the genius that is Hex Hector.  To be honest, Hector didn't create all of these mixes himself.  He has partnered with several folks for the final product throughout this eight set series.  Dezrok, Soul Solution and even Jonathan Peters helped him flesh out a lot of these songs.  Perhaps there is no more deserving of recognition in his partnerships than Mac Quayle. Mac Quayle is a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist, who has written and produced for many of the DIVAS included in this series.  Today, he produces scores for a multitude of TV shows and movies.  His partnership with Hex Hector on many of the productions they put out is equally as important to shaping the sound of the finished product as the lead man himself.  I just want to ensure that Mac gets the credit he deserves, because without him on board, many of these remixes may have never occurred much-less been as stellar as they are. Mac, we salute you! Much like volume 7, this set includes many number one Billboard Club/Dance hits but are still considered to be lesser than many of the iconic ones spread out over this series.  That is until you get to the final two.  Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You and Celine Dion's I Drove All Night was about as massive and iconic as they get.  So for those of you who questioned as to why these weren't included ...HERE THEY ARE! I've got a very special Diva Series going up tomorrow, which kicks off the pre-Madonna birthday month celebrations.  More news on that this Saturday. Until then ...ENJOY! Curating this sprawling 8-volume series was a Herculean task, not just because of the sheer volume of Hector's work, but because of the collaborative genius that often powered it. One collaborator who can't be ignored is Mac Quayle. Mac Quayle, a Grammy-nominated multi-instrumentalist and now a prolific Hollywood score composer, has been an invaluable creative partner to Hex Hector. They've churned out some unforgettable mixes together, shaping the very fabric of the dance floor anthems we adore. From Gloria Estefan's "Don't Let This Moment End" to Toni Braxton's "Hit The Freeway," their collaborative essence can be felt. Kudos, Mac Quayle, your contribution is immeasurable. Even as we reach the pinnacle of this series with volume 8, it's crucial to note that what you've heard barely scratches the surface of Hex Hector's prolific career. This set features everything from Billboard chart-toppers to lesser-known gems like the Whigfield classic Saturday Night a collaboration with Darrin Friedman or Wake Up by legendary gospel singer Dawn Tallman. As we approach the end, brace yourselves for two mega-hits that have left an indelible mark on the dance music landscape: Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You" and Celine Dion's "I Drove All Night." This installment presents a diverse array of Hex Hector's work, from chart-dominating hits to those hidden gems that truly deserved more time in the limelight. Starting off with Everything But The Girl's "Temperamental," remixed in collaboration with Mac Quayle, the set instantly sets a mood. This track has a special place for me, prompting those rare moments of introspective reflection. Hex and Quayle's treatment of the song offers a nuanced depth, letting you tap into your inner musings while you dance. Diana Ross's classic "I Will Survive" makes an appearance in this set, proving that Hex's magic touch can elevate even the most iconic of tracks. It's a bold move to tackle a song of such stature, but Hex pulls it off, reimagining it while honoring its essence. For those who like a dash of nostalgia, Mandy Moore's "Candy" is transformed into a dance floor must-play. The innocence and youthful vibe of the original find new layers under Hex Hector's creative direction, making it a compelling experience. Mikaila's "So In Love With Two" is another intriguing inclusion. Not a track that everyone may be familiar with, but it showcases Hex's ability to dig deep and turn any song into a dance hit. While these mixes include some of his well-known classics, the set also delves into lesser-known tracks like the ultra-rare "Relax" by Mika. Some of these tracks may have been minor club hits, but that doesn't make them any less worthy of a spot in this playlist. A couple of them even soared to the top of the Billboard Dance Club charts, proving that Hex's influence isn't just felt in the most popular of hits, but also in the deeper cuts that only true enthusiasts might know. So, as we gear up for the final installment of this Hex Hector Mixology series, Volume 7 serves as a special gift to his most devoted fans. If your favorite track hasn't shown up yet, don't worry. The partnership between these two icons was nothing short of transformative for the dance music scene. Often released under the label HQ2, their collaborations brought a unique fusion of sounds that were as emotionally resonant as they were irresistibly danceable. What set the Hex Hector and Mac Quayle partnership apart was a shared vision for reimagining the emotional core of a song. Take, for instance, Madonna's "Music." The original version was already an anthem in its own right, but under the deft hands of HQ2, it morphed into something extraordinary—keeping the dance floor packed while adding another layer of interpretative depth to the already iconic track. Similarly, their take on Donna Summer's "Love On & On" pays homage to the Queen of Disco's enduring legacy. Hex and Mac captured the eternal vibrance of Summer's vocals while infusing the track with contemporary electronic elements. It was a testament to the duo's ability to honor the original artist's intent while incorporating a fresh, uplifting vibe, which explains why their remixes often stood the test of time. Mac Quayle's prowess isn't limited to dance anthems; he's expanded his talents into scoring TV shows and movies. Emmy-award-winning projects like "Mr. Robot" bear testament to his range and ability to set the mood through music. His success in Hollywood doesn't diminish his legacy in dance music; rather, it enriches it, showing how versatile and multitalented he is as a musician. One more exceptional tune in this Hex Hector tribute mix is Angie Stone's "Wish I Didn't Miss You." Though many of their collaborations foresaked the HQ2 moniker in favor of their names, this track exemplifies the same kind of emotional storytelling through music that Hector and Quayle championed. It serves as a powerful reminder that whether alone or as part of a dynamic duo, Hex Hector's influence looms large in the world of dance music. So, as we continue to relish in the Hex Hector Tribute Mix, let's also give a nod to the incredible artists and collaborators like Mac Quayle who have made this journey through the world of remixes so enthralling. Next, I interview Mac Quayle about how his dance music background (41 #1 Billboard Dance Hits!) influences his film and TV scoring. He gives some music mixing pointers and explains how to build momentum in a song or soundtrack.

If you thought Volume 1 was a dance floor burner, then hold onto your glow sticks because Volume 2 will transport you to another level of auditory bliss. This compilation showcases the sheer mastery that Thunderpuss—the dynamic duo of Barry Harris and Chris Cox—brought to the world of dance music. Let's kick things off with Abigail's "Let The Joy Rise." The genius of Thunderpuss lies not just in their ability to create beats but also in their knack for elevating a song's emotional core. They weave a magnetic tapestry of sound that transforms Abigail's classic into a euphoric anthem. And speaking of anthems, who can forget Janet Jackson's "All For You"? The Thunderpuss treatment of this banger makes it near-impossible to stay seated. With its thumping bass and nuanced touches, it's a quintessential example of their artistry, making us all long for the dance floor. Shifting the vibe, we delve into the synth-laden territory of Pet Shop Boys' iconic track, "New York City Boy." Thunderpuss takes this already magnetic tune and catapults it into the stratosphere of gay anthems. Imagine this: you're in a packed club, and the mid-section of the song hits. Suddenly, a men's chorus starts belting out "vodka" in a rhythmic chant, and the room erupts into a euphoric frenzy. It's not just a night in New York City; it's a night that defines what it means to be fabulous. This remix captures the essence of liberation and celebration, resonating from the towering skyscrapers to the pulsing heart of the LGBTQ+ community. It's sophisticated, it's glamorous, and above all, it's a dance floor essential. For those who love their dance tracks infused with a tinge of melodrama, Amber's “Above The Clouds” and Lara Fabian's "I Will Love Again" hit the spot. Thunderpuss elevates both songs into celestial experiences. The remixes are like a double shot of adrenaline to the heart, lifting you above any turmoil and into a state of bliss. When it comes to floor-filling remixes of "Stranger In My House" by Tamia, both HQ2 and Thunderpuss delivered versions that never failed to ignite the dance floor. Hex Hector and Mac Quayle's take is a pulsating mix that turns the introspective original into a seismic anthem, while Thunderpuss injects a relentless energy that keeps revelers entranced. The incredible thing is that despite their different stylistic approaches, both remixes serve as potent catalysts for dance floor euphoria. You could be in the same club and hear both versions in one night, each eliciting its own unique yet equally electrifying re...

Donna Summer Tribute [1948–2012]

Not unlike Michael Jackson, Donna Summer reached the upper-echelon of her career and then was quickly struck down by controversy.  While each instance is significantly different with respect to the issue surrounding the heap of shit they found themselves in, they both showcase how ultimate fame can be quickly supplanted by ruination. I'm not here to pass judgment on what she may or may have not said; rather focus on her career that had this gay boy dancing around his room night after night. Donna Summer has worn the title of “Queen of Disco” for most of her career and rightfully so. With a slew of hits that topped the Disco charts and many more #1 and top tens on the pop charts, no single person has defined an era more than Donna Summer. After the aforementioned “controversy” in the late eighties, her career was on a downward trajectory.  She focused her efforts by spreading her voice to other genres and other forms of music during the next couple of decades. While she never reached the kind of peak she enjoyed in the late 70s and early 80s, she managed to rack up another 11 club hits that topped Billboard's Club Play Chart.  No doubt, the love the gay community still had for her helped fuel this continued success. Since her earliest work has been subject to countless compilations, I decided it fitting to focus this set on the latter half of her career with a couple of earlier bootlegged classics courtesy of Eddie Baez and DJ Meme. Words cannot express the significance she played not only in my life but countless others.  From the kid that used to mow lawns to get enough money to buy your records, thank you for the music. You are sorely missed. This is a re-boot of the original Donna Summer Tribute I put out last year and includes two new songs. Album : Donna Summer [Re-boot] Genre : Circuit, House Year : 2014 Total Time : 1:39:15.00 1. Melody Of Love [Wanna Be Loved] (Morales intro. Vasquez Club Mix) 2.
