Aamun pojat painaa kohti uutta reissua määränpäänä Tampere. *This is the Free Content version of my interview with Dr. Lars de Wildt. To access the entire episode, please consider becoming a Tier 1 'Gates of Argonath' member on Patreon, or you can purchase this episode for a one-time fee. My guest this month is Dr. Lars de Wildt. Lars is Assistant Professor in Media and Cultural Industries at the Centre for Media and Journalism Studies, at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands.Lars studies how media cultures and industries make contemporary worldviews. Examples are how media industries construct 'global' culture and how local audiences consume it; how Western game developers sold religion to secular audiences; how online platforms birth conspiracy theories; and how Western videogames adapt to Chinese players and policies. His first book, The Pop Theology of Videogames: Producing and Playing with Religion was published Open Access with Amsterdam University Press. Lars was part of the AHRC-funded project "Everything Is Connected: Conspiracy Theories in the Age of the Internet," was previously a (visiting) researcher at the universities of Leuven, Heidelberg, Bremen, Tampere, Jyväskylä, Montréal, and Deakin, and is working on an NWO Veni project about how the hegemonic worldviews of Western videogames adapt to Chinese players and policies. He is also a Member of YARN (Young ARts Network), anEssay-editor of Tijdschrift Sociologie/ Sociology Magazine, a Fellow at the Centre for Religion, Conflict and Globalization, at the University of Groningen, the Netherlands, a Member of Faculty of the Consultative Body for Teaching Policy (FOO), and a Research Fellow at the Institute for Media Studies, at the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. In this interview, Lars discusses his book The Pop Theology of Videogames: Producing and Playing with Religion. In it, he is offered up the question by a game designer, “what does religion have to do with video games, anyway?” This question opens our discussion on the relationship between games and religion, the differences between developers and players approaches to gaming, how video games can affect players' worldviews, and how role-playing games can potentially contribute to a sense of personal identity. These are just a few of the points Lars covers in this interview. PROGRAM NOTESDr. Lars de Wildt - dr. L.A.W.J. Hailing from Turku, Finland, Svarta Havet are set to release their sophomore album, titled ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', via their new label home Prosthetic Records on May 9th. On ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', the self-described dyster (gloomy) post-hardcore group cast a critical eye over the negative effects of Western colonialism, capital greed and convenience at the cost of sustainability, presenting a rallying cry for change whilst never losing sight of the light that this world has to offer. Formed in 2018, Svarta Havet - translated as “black sea” - were born from the Finnish DIY punk and hardcore scene, with the members bonding over a shared affinity for punk music and community-first ideals with a focus on antifascist, feminist, trans and queer politics. ‘Månen ska lysa din väg', translated in English as “The moon will light your way” and a direct quote from album track Göm dig, was recorded in January 2024 at Waiting Room Studio in Tampere, Finland, with producer Mikael Neves. We spoke with vocalist Lotta and guitarist Joakim about the new album, about their evolving sound, and how they are writing with more nuances these days. As political as ever, but sharper, we discuss their expressions, as well as what this album says about them, and so much more. Trust when we tell you this mix has been a long-time coming... And now, finally, enter Tm Shuffle (AKA Trackmaster Shuffle AKA DJ Shuffle). His real name is Jukka Hänninen and he originates from Ruutana, Finland - a settlement absorbed into the country's sprawling second-largest city Tampere, which lies in the south of the country, about 150 km north of Helsinki. Jukka is a purveyor of finest deep & dubby techno music as an artist, DJ and label boss with his Vuo Records and Soulful Dubs imprints, which stretch back to a first release in 2003. His labels have released the works of his friends and fellow countrymen like Monoder, Phonogenic, Trevor Deep Jr; Star Dub; Armin Bender; Marco Cassanelli; former Avenue Red guest OHM and his long-time collaborator Kvadrant, to name just a handful. This mix is a testament to his veteran status on the decks and his keen ear for a patient, treacle-smooth flowing deep dubbed-out techno vinyl mix that feels transcending, full of cosmic touches... and if you close your eyes you can see the northern lights shimmering in your mind as you let the sounds wash over you. "I bring this mix from Ruutana City, Finland. Hidden in this studio in the forest, armed with two trusty old 1210s, a mixer and some dusty records, I bring the usual dubby deepness. Dive in!" Some people see a city as streets, buildings, and infrastructure. Troy Innocent sees it as a playground.A BMX-riding, LEGO-city-building, world-maker from childhood, Troy never stopped playing. But instead of keeping it to himself, he turned his playful instinct into The Future Play Lab.At RMIT, Troy is transforming how people interact with public spaces through speculative design, urban play, Indigenous knowledge and augmented reality experiences like 64 Ways of Being. From risky play in childhood to playful interventions in cityscapes, Troy and The Future Play Lab are proving that play isn't just fun; it's how we reimagine the world. ______________________Hello there! We're Dr. Jane Hession and Ronan Healy. Dr Innocent (he/they) is an urban play scholar, artist, game maker and Director of the future play lab at RMIT University in Narrm Melbourne. The lab develops socially engaged and site-responsive urban play connecting experimental game design, public space, posthuman methods, and creative technologies. Working with the city as a material, their approach to reworlding develops posthuman methods that reimagine, reconfigure and reconnect with the world. This involves transdisciplinary practices across design, sculpture, animation, sound, light and installation using methods of multiplatform storytelling that connect objects with their environment to build speculative worlds that playfully defamiliarise and disrupt urban life.Troy has 25 years of experience in gallery-based exhibitions, symposia and site-specific projects, developing augmented reality games that blend physical objects with digital interfaces to reimagine everyday urban environments in playful ways, situating his work in Aarhus, Melbourne, Bristol, Barcelona, Istanbul, Ogaki, Sydney, Tampere and Hong Kong. They are the creator of 64 Ways of Being, an urban adventure platform combining audio walks and mixed realities to situate players in new experiences of place.Contact DetailsEmailtroy.innocent@rmit.edu.auLinkedin https://www.linkedin.com/in/troy-innocent/ Website http://futureplaylab.io Twitter @playablemelbAdditional Resources https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bernie_De_Koven https://direct.mit.edu/books/monograph/2338/Critical-PlayRadical-Game-Design https://www.dukeupress.edu/staying-with-the-trouble https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolyn_Briggs https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Making-the-Case-for-Playful-Learning-Ilgaz-Hassinger-Das/142f7fb1e64d444e053eda974860ac7711127de7 Timestamps(0:00) - Dr. Troy Innocent(2:15) - Troy's Childhood and Early Play Experiences(5:03) - Risky Play: How It Shapes Identity(6:58) - Advice to Younger Self: Balancing Playfulness and Seriousness(9:50) - The Role of Intuition in Play and Creativity(13:19) - Striking a Balance Between Seriousness and Playfulness at Work(18:04) - Adult Playfulness: Breaking Clichés and Misconceptions(24:45) - How Urban Play Inspires New Ways of Thinking About the Future(29:25) - Hopeful Play: A Tool for Social and Ecological Change(35:01) - Exploring Melbourne's Hidden Histories Through Play and AR(39:41) - 64 Ways of Being: Augmented Reality and Storytelling(42:10) - Lego Build: How Troy's Work Helps People See the World Differently(47:00) - Playlabs as a Catalyst for Change in Academia(50:34) - Entangling People in Creative Ways of Thinking
Miten Tuija Pehkonen liittyy Eskon deittailuun? Säännöt on tehty rikottaviksi, etenkin piilolinssien osalta. Mitä eroa on Suomella ja Kreikalla? Esko kysyy Suvilta erittäin omituisen kysymyksen, joka liittyy silmämuniin. Tampere on hieno paikka, etenkin kahdesta erinomaisesta syystä. Jos olet pelannut jotakin videopeliä yli 20 000 tuntia, niin Suvi osaa kertoa, kuinka monta vuotta olet pelannut yhtäjaksoisesti.

Päivi Hirvonen is a musician, composer and singer, who's a linchpin figure in the Finnish folk music scene. Blending tradition with innovation, she is best known for being a true virtuoso when it comes to the fiddle and the jouhikko - a traditional Finnish bowed lyre. It's an instrument which musicians almost entirely assigned to history by the early 20th century but - good news! - it has, in recent years, started enjoying something of a revival. Päivi was born in Jyväskylä, a city in the centre of Finland, that has been described as “The Athens of Finland”. These days, she lives in Tampere. In our interview, Päivi talks about creating her last album, Kallio, during the pandemic and she also reflects on how the way she worked then has moved on to bear out on her next record, which will be out in the spring. As a member of the band Okra Playground - one of Finland's leading contemporary folk ensembles - Päivi also gets to regularly collaborate with other musicians. Our conversation touches on how she determines whether a new emerging song would be going to Okra Playground or remain as a solo track and what it's like working with her bandmates over the last 14 years or so. Check out our dedicated Päivi Hirvonen playlist at www.melodyam.com/paivi with some of the gems from the Finnish musician's back catalogue, including some of her work with the band.
This week we dive headfirst into the land of heavy metal, Finland. In what originally started off as an episode on the Oranssi Pazuzu album Mestearin Kynsi, we quickly realised that we had a two parter on our hands. So this week, we're using Oranssi Pazuzu as a lens through which to view the Finnish music scene. In the episode, we take a detour through the history and culture of Finland, exploring why this country has the highest ratio of metal bands per capita. We also touch on notable Finnish acts, quirky cultural elements, and the unique musical environment of Tampere.

In a world where digital transformation is often seen as a pathway to efficiency and profitability, can it also pave the way for sustainability? This pivotal question forms the crux of our upcoming episode of Tech Talks Daily Podcast, where I sit down with Ricardo Lobo, CEO of Beontag. As a vanguard in the realm of RFID and IoT solutions, Beontag is at the forefront of a quiet revolution in the digital tagging industry, seamlessly blending innovation with ecological responsibility. From their new state-of-the-art R&D Center in Tampere, Finland, to their forthcoming facility in Dayton, Ohio, Beontag is setting the benchmark for sustainable operations and smart technologies. With initiatives like the ECO Tag and investments aimed at amplifying production capacities while minimizing environmental impact, Beontag exemplifies how businesses can meet escalating sustainability and traceability requirements without sacrificing their bottom line. Throughout our discussion, Ricardo will shed light on the unseen technologies that stitch together the processes of numerous industries, from luxury brands to smart cities. He will articulate how these innovations not only enhance operational efficiency and transparency but also empower companies to meet their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. In an era where businesses grapple with integrating climate-friendly practices with competitive, profitable operations, can the right digital tools offer a solution where sustainability and business success converge rather than conflict? Join us as Ricardo Lobo illustrates a reimagined business landscape where technology and sustainability are not at odds but are components of a unified strategy benefiting customers, companies, and the planet. Jamie will be in The Unspeakeasy as part of our Unspeakers Series on Aug. 7, 2024. Apply to join The Unspeakeasy now if you want the chance to meet her in a private, off-the-record hangout. “What is happening to scores of children . . . is morally and medically appalling.” Those were the words of Jamie Reed, a former case manager at a gender clinic in a major American children's hospital, when she burst on the scene via a Free Press article in February 2023. Since then, she has become known as the most prominent whistleblower in the effort to put the brakes on medicalized gender transition for kids. In this conversation, Jamie talks about what the last year and a half has been like for her, what the public still needs to understand about this issue, and why doctors and other medical providers are continuing to misrepresent their treatment protocols. She discusses how institutions serving the most vulnerable kids, including foster care systems (where large numbers of kids now identify as trans), have adopted affirmative care models and explains what it's like to Testify before state legislatures about restricting access to non-evidence-based gender-affirming care. As a self-described “queer woman who's married to a transgender person and is politically to the left of Bernie Sanders,” it's the last thing she ever thought she'd be doing. Now it's her life's work. GUEST BIO Jamie Reed is one of the first public whistleblowers from a pediatric gender clinic in the United States and is now the Executive Director and Co-Founder of the LGBT Courage Coalition, an American-based non-profit of LGBT adults seeking to reform youth gender medicine. She has spoken at numerous conferences including Genspect: The Bigger Picture in Colorado, at the International Perspectives on Evidence- Based Treatment for Gender-Dysphoric Youth in New York, and Psychotherapeutic Process with Young People Experiencing Gender Dysphoria in Tampere, Finland. Jamie is a gay woman and foster and adoptive parent of five boys. She holds a Master of Science in Clinical Research from Washington University in St. Louis and a bachelor's degree in Cultural Anthropology. Read the original story in The Free Press here. Natural disasters and other emergencies are not situations that can be completely avoided, but like insurance, it is good to have access to the requisite support in times of need. As we approach the 2024 North Atlantic hurricane season, we thought it opportune to reshare a conversation we had with Sylvester Cadette, of the International Telecommunication Union, in 2021 on the Tampere Convention in which we discussed, among other things: * the Tampere Convention, what it is and why more Caribbean countries ought to accede to it; * the challenges that are likely to occur when countries have not signed on to the Convention; * reasons why countries are not signing on the Convention; plus * the need for Caribbean countries to have more comprehensive emergency telecommunications plans in place.

Hear about travel to Finland as the Amateur Traveler talks to travel writer Jayne Dear about a one-week itinerary to visit the best of Finland by train. https://amateurtraveler.com/touring-finland-by-train/ Why should you visit Finland? Jayne says, "Many reasons. One of the most notable is that it's the happiest country in the world. For the last six years, it's been declared the happiest country in the world on the World Happiness Report. It's a beautiful country. You probably will have seen more trees than you will have seen in your life." Jayne starts us in the capital of Helsinki. She recommends visiting: Helsinki Central Station: A stunning Art Nouveau train station with a 48-meter-high clock tower. National Museum of Finland: This museum offers insights into Finland's history, including Viking relics, artifacts, and a Russian czar's throne. Market Square: Located by the harbor in Helsinki, it's a vibrant place to witness the local food scene, buy fresh produce, and try unique dishes like moose burgers and reindeer soup. Helsinki Cathedrals: There are two cathedrals to explore in Helsinki—the plain yet dramatic Lutheran Cathedral and the opulent Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, offering a contrasting religious experience. Suomenlinna Fortress: A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this historic fortress on an island near Helsinki was built to deny the Russians access to the Baltic Sea. It's a fascinating place to explore, with military museums, a submarine, and a lighthouse church. While you are in Helsinki Jayne recommends a side trip to Porvoo which is located an hour from Helsinki by bus, Porvoo is known for its traditional wooden buildings. It has an open-air museum, showcasing historic buildings, churches, schools, and farms, providing a glimpse into Finland's rural past. Take the train then to Tampere which Jayne calls the "Manchester of Finland" due to its industrial history. Visitors can explore old warehouses, textile factories turned into museums and unique architecture like the Art Nouveau Fire Station. The city is situated between two lakes, offering picturesque views. For the best views, hike the nearby esker, a gravel hill left by the last Ice Age. While in Tampere, Jayne and her husband also did a homestay where they were able to learn more about life in Finland. Located in Parola, south of Tampere, is the Parola Tank Museum which showcases a variety of tanks and military vehicles, offering insights into military history. Our next stop is Turku which was Finland's old capital. Turku boasts a medieval cathedral and a historic castle. The city's riverside features historic boats, making it an attractive destination for exploring maritime history. If you have extra time, head north to Rovaniemi which is located on the Arctic Circle, Rovaniemi is famous for being the "home" of Santa Claus. Visitors can partake in activities like dog sledding and witness the Northern Lights during the winter months. Whether you want to explore the coffee culture, the Finnish love of board games, the extensive forests, or the Wife Carrying World Championships, Finland is worth a visit.

His latest book, David Bowie, Enid Blyton and the Sun Machine, is due to be published in November 2023.Mother: A Memoir“Pre-word In my mind's eye she is sitting at the circular white Formica-top table in the corner. Morning sunlight fills the kitchen. She has a cup of Milky Nescafé Gold Blend and is smoking a purple Silk Cut. She is dressed for comfort in a floral bronze-and-brown blouse and blue jumper with light gray slacks and blue slippers. She is absorbed in a crossword (The Times) but not oblivious. She does what always takes me aback. She reads out one of the clues. As if I would know the answer. Her gift for crosswords is alien to me. I get stuck at the first ambiguity or double-meaning. Whereas she sweeps through all illusions allusions red herrings and anagrams and is done most days by lunchtime. But her fondness for crossword puzzles is inseparable from my interest in words. Where they come from. What they might be doing. Earliest recorded use of 'In my mind's eye': Shakespeare's Hamlet (around 1599). Referring to the Ghost. My mother died years ago. What has induced me to write about her after all this time remains mysterious to me. It is connected to the climate crisis. As the natural historian David Attenborough says: 'the collapse of our civilizations and the extinction of much of the natural world is on the horizon.' In ways I cannot pretend to fathom I have found that writing about my mother is bound up with writing about Mother Nature and Mother Earth. And no doubt it has to do also with my own aging and the buried life of mourning. The strange timetables of realization and loss. A memoir is 'a written record of a person's knowledge of events or of a person's own experiences'. 'A record of events written by a person having intimate knowledge of them and based on personal observation.' So the dictionaries tell us. But this memoir of my mother makes no attempt at a comprehensive record.”www.routledge.com/An-Introduction-to-Literature-Criticism-and-Theory/Bennett-Royle/p/book/9781032158846 https://myriadeditions.com/creator/nicholas-royle/ https://quickfiction.co.uk/www.creativeprocess.info www.oneplanetpodcast.org IG www.instagram.com/creativeprocesspodcast
