His inventive scores and signature themes enliven some of TV's most popular series and notable films.Fil Eisler credits his early years as a rock guitarist with giving him a background in producing records, which he says has been essential in his career as a film composer. But it wasn't just anybody's records the multi-talented Eisler cut his teeth on. As a co-writer on Robbie Williams' “Stalkers Day Off (Hanging Around),” “Talk to Me” and “Superblind” (from Williams' multi-platinum album Reality Killed The Video Star), Eisler has also worked with rockers Ryan Adams and Dave Stewart, among many others. Then for a change of scenery, Eisler tried his hand at composing for film and was invited to the prestigious Sundance Film Composers Lab, where he went onto score, among others, Proud Mary, The Titan, and How To Be Single, while also directing and leading over a dozen heavy-hitting Hollywood composers for Peabody-winning documentary, Newtown.By all the accolades his work in film has produced, including the World Soundtrack Awards New Discovery Award, SXSW Best Soundtrack Award and multiple BMI awards for both his film and TV work, one would think he'd stay put in visual media. On this episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes Podcast, I'm catching up with the wonderful and lovely friend of the show, composer Fil Eisler about his latest movie 'Thunder Force'.For those of you who haven't heard the six other times we've interviewed Fil, he is a muli-award-winning composer with projects ranging from big studio action pieces and comedies, to gritty independent films and hit television shows. He began his career as a touring musician, where he travelled, recorded and wrote with a multitude of artists, including Robbie Williams, with whom he has written a number of songs as well. As a tv composer, he has been the man behind the music for shows such as ‘Empire’, ‘Revenge’, ‘UnREAL’, and ‘What/If’, along with recent Netflix series 'Biohackers' and 'Outer Banks', both of which are due to return with 2nd Seasons, and the new Disney+ series 'Big Shot'. On the film side, he has scored movies such as ‘The Titan’, ‘CHIPS’, Marti Noxon’s ‘To the Bone’, the documentaries 'Newtown' and 'US Kids', and a number of Melissa McCarthy/Ben Falcone films including ‘Life of the Party’, ‘Superintelligence’, and their latest, which is the No 1 streaming movie in the USA, 'Thunder Force'.'Thunder Force' stars Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer as two childhood best friends who are reunite as an unlikely crime-fighting superhero duo when one invents a formula that gives ordinary people superpowers. It is an outrageously fun film, and Fil has created an outrageously kick-ass soundtrack to go with it.Teaming up with heavy metal legends such as Dave Lombardo (Slayer, Mr Bungle), Scott Ian (Anthrax), Corey Taylor (Slipknot), Lzzy Hale (Halestorm), alongside heavy metal cellist, Tina Guo, Fil put together something of a metal supergroup to create a sound they have been referring to as "Orchestral Metal". It is one of my favourite things Fil has created so far, and if you check out his Instagram feed, you'll see he had an outrageously fun time doing it too. I should also point out, this was all put together in the logistical nightmare of a global pandemic...It's always a pleasure to chat with Fil about his work, but it was especially interesting this time around as he discusses working with some of his childhood (and adulthood) heroes, collaborating again with the lovely Melissa McCarthy & Ben Falcone, and the issues with trying to record an orchestral soundtrack in the middle of a pandemic. This week we bring Hollywood and thrash metal icons together on one episode to celebrate the soundtrack of the new film Thunder Force! Composer Fil Eisler tells us why he felt he needed to pitch adding Scott Ian and Dave Lombardo to the Melissa McCarthy-led Netflix film, how avant garde techniques can be brought to scoring film that wouldn't work in traditional songwriting, how they got Corey Taylor and Lzzy Hale involved to write a theme song, which film soundtrack he would like to do a heavy metal remake of with Scott and Dave, and updates on both the new Motor Sister and Dead Cross records. Petar, Brandon, and Jozalyn have their yearly debate about the new petition for Metallica to play the Super Bowl Halftime Show, and they discuss Lucas Mann and Rings of Saturn being dropped by their label for alleged threats. Thank you to our sponsor, Metal Blade Records, for their continued support! Songs: Corey Taylor, Lzzy Hale, Scott Ian, Dave Lombardo, Fil Eisler, and Tina Guo - “Thunder Force Theme Song," Mr. Bungle - “Bungle Grind” (Live), and Tommy's Rock Trip - “Got To Play Some Rock N Roll”

Fil began his career as a touring musician, where he traveled, recorded and wrote with a multitude of artists, including Robbie Williams, with whom he has written a number of songs such as 'Superblind' and 'My F*ck You to You'. He also recently composed an original concerto performed by the brilliant violinist Sarah Chang, and worked with a group of fellow composers, including our old friend Nathan Barr, on 'Silent Films Live', adding original score to silent movies. As an advocate for gun control in the US, Fil has worked on various documentaries such as 'Newtown', about the aftermath of the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and 'Us Kids', following the students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida. It has been a couple of years since we last caught up with Fil, so we had lots to chat about, and for the first time, I got to do it face-to-face in his studio in LA. Unfortunately, I also was getting over a sore throat at the time, so I apologise for the croakiness of my voice in this recording! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Fil Eisler, one of today’s busiest and most diverse award-winning composers, has projects that range from big studio action pieces and comedies to gritty independent films and hit TV shows. I know Fil from working with him on the first two seasons of ‘Empire,’ and he has since exploded onto the scene working on multiple big studio productions. In this episode Fil and I talk a bit about his slow and steady rise to being an “overnight success” as a top composer, but more importantly we dive into his personal journey as an overworked composer with a young kid who decided enough was enough. He wasn’t going to let the entertainment business slowly kill him...and he decided to fight back. Fil’s story is a true inspiration and testament to what can be accomplished no matter how busy you think you might be. He’s the hardest working person I know, yet he figured out how to introduce better health into his routine not only for his child’s sake, but for his own as well. If you want to learn what finally compelled Fil to change his priorities, his routines, and his life and how to apply these strategies to do the same for yourself, this episode won’t disappoint. https://www.instagram.com/p/BnF-C92gafK/ Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here's What You'll Learn: How Fil finds all the time to keep himself healthy and productive The trials of breaking into the composing game The project that put Fil on the map, and the twenty years it took him to get there Being able to master tradition musical composition as well work in an entirely digital workspace The unique difficulties of dealing with producers and directors while composing music Trusting yourself and learning when it's okay to improvise Not getting overwhelmed by the big picture and distilling your tasks to whatever you have to do next Living productively in Hollywood with children Useful Resources Mentioned: Fil Eisler's Instagram Our Generous Sponsors: This episode is made possible for you by Ergodriven, the makers of the Topo Mat, my #1 recommendation for anyone who stands at their workstation. Guest Bio: Instagram Fil Eisler is one of today’s busiest and most diverse composers, with projects that range from big studio action pieces and comedies, to gritty independent films and hit television shows. He has been nominee and recipient of numerous awards including the World Soundtrack Awards New Discovery, SXSW Best Soundtrack Award and multiple BMI Awards. Eisler’s ability to understand directors’ musical intent and his flexible approach to scoring has led to numerous collaborations with Hollywood heavy-weights such as Catherine Hardwicke, Marti Noxon, Lee Daniels, Phillip Noyce, Mc G and Ben Falcone. Eisler’s music for Showtime's Emmy-winning “Shameless” earned him the BMI Film and TV Award. The same year, he also won the BMI Award as both the composer and conductor for ABC’s breakout hit drama “Revenge.” Eisler also composed the main title theme and acted as co-composer and music director for the Peabody-winning documentary, “Newtown,” for which he organized and led an all-star line-up of over a dozen Hollywood composers, who each donated a piece of music for the film.  Show Credits: This episode was edited by Curtis Fritsch, and the show notes were prepared and published by Elyse Rintelman. Jon Baker (Shepard) and Frank “Ponch” Poncherello (Peña) have just joined the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in Los Angeles but for very different reasons. Baker is a beaten up pro motorbiker trying to put his life and marriage back together. Poncherello is a cocky undercover Federal agent investigating a multi-million dollar heist that may be an inside job—inside the CHP. The inexperienced rookie and hardened pro are teamed together, but clash more than click, so kickstarting a partnership is easier said than done. But with Baker’s bike skills combined with Ponch’s street savvy it might just work…if they don’t drive each other crazy along the way. Also starring are Rosa Salazar (“Insurgent”), Adam Brody (“Think Like a Man Too”), Kristen Bell (“Veronica Mars”), and Vincent D’Onofrio (“Jurassic World”). “CHIPS” is produced by Andrew Panay (“Earth to Echo,” “Wedding Crashers”), who produced Shepard’s directorial debut “Hit and Run,” and Ravi Mehta (“Get Hard”). Beyond the world of Empire we also chat about Fil's other series, UnReal on Lifetime that airs this June and looks to rebrand the network's image which from the melodramatic shows/movies it's usually known for. On the film side of things, we chat about his scores for the dramedy Growing Up And Other Lies starring Adam Brody and horror/comedy Kitchen Sink starring Vanessa Hudgens and Bob Odenkirk. Fil has been a guest many times, but we never run out of things to discuss. Each new project is always testing the versatility of this smart and talented composer who continues to impress. [Watch the video interview on our YouTube Channel] Fil Eisler has quickly become one of the most versatile and sought after composers working in the industry. His range for storytelling can be heard in almost any genre such as TV shows like Revenge and Empire, and in films like Newtown and How To Be Single. This All Access is truly special as we welcome back Fil to Film.Music.Media and converse with one of the most fun personalities in the composing world. Fil talks about his childhood, being born Czechoslovakia and then his family moving to England at a very early age. We discuss industry trends such as reboots and remakes since Fil is currently working on CHiPs based off the classic TV series. Fil gives insight to the challenge of scoring comedies as well. We then go into great detail on his work on the powerful documentary, Newtown. Newtown is an emotional look at how the community of Newtown came together following the tragedy of the Sandy Hook mass shootings. It's a heavy subject, and Fil talks about how he ended up wanting to bring 17 composers together to work on the score to symbolize a community. Gun control is a passionate subject for Fil, and we talk about how he hopes the documentary will spark a debate to better society. We touch upon violence in film and television, and some grand overall views of what the film industry is doing right these days and possibly what they are doing wrong. Even though the subject matter is heavy at times, this is one of the most enlightening and engaging All Access interviews on Film.Music.Media. And it was such a great pleasure to sit down with Fil Eisler once again. Interview Produced & Presented By:Kaya Savas Special Thanks:Fil EislerJana DavidoffCW3PR

Composer Fil Eisler takes some time to discuss two of his recent projects with CHiPs and Newtown. Fil talks about his unique path to film composing and how his love of playing in bands meshed with orchestral music. We dive into Newtown which revolves around the Sandy Hook tragedy. Fil discusses the role of documentary filmmaking and how it can help start a conversation about an important subject such as gun control. We also discuss CHiPs and how Fil worked with director Dax Shephard to create a score with both band elements and orchestral action. The whole goal of CHiPs was to stay away from the conventional "studio rock" sound that is in modern R-rated comedies these days. Fil is one of our favorite guests and it was so great to have him back to catch up on his recent projects. It's a shortened show this week, due to Dave being rather under the weather, but to make up for that, we do have a great interview with friend of Geektown - Fil Eisler. Fil is the man behind the music for the mega-hit TV show Empire, along with the recently departed Revenge, and Lifetime’s UnReal. He's also scored the recently released Dakota Johnson and Rebel Wilson movie 'How To Be Single', and is currently working on a movie adaptation of the 70's cop show CHiP's starring Dax Shepard and Antman's Michael Peña, and an epic scifi film called The Titan starring Sam Worthington (Avatar) and Orange Is The New Black's Taylor Schilling. Most recently though, one of the projects he's been involved with is 'Newtown'. An incredible documentary about the aftermath of the mass shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, where 20 children aged between 6 and 7, and 6 staff members lost their lives to a lone gunman. Unlike a lot of films on this subject, this isn't a documentary about gun control, but... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

I’m excited to announce this Composer Quest double episode with TV composers Fil Eisler (Revenge, Empire, UnReal) and Mac Quayle (American Horror Story, Drive, Mr. Robot). First, we hear from Fil about what he learned while composing for an orchestra during four seasons of Revenge. He shares his tips on getting hired for composing gigs and his tips on scoring the entire arc of a show without getting musically stale. Next, I interview Mac Quayle about how his dance music background (41 #1 Billboard Dance Hits!) influences his film and TV scoring. He gives some music mixing pointers and explains how to build momentum in a song or soundtrack.

If you were asked to channel The Beatles and write a new song in their style, how would you do it? That was the challenge I gave myself in creating a jingle for my patron from Liverpool, Luke Thomas. In this episode, I explain my thought process behind each layer of this Beatles-esque song. This week, I had the chance to catch up with our old friend Fil Eisler - aka, the artist formally known as iZLER... ;) - to talk about his recently released soundtrack album from the hit E4 TV show Revenge. The album contains music from seasons 1 & 2, which is performed by the 50-piece orchestra Fil conducts each week for the show. Eisler's music has become such an integral part of Revenge, with his beautifully dark and complex compositions adding layers of texture to the drama. We also discuss his up-coming work on Arnold Schwarzenegger &  James Cameron produced 'Years Of Living Dangerously' documentary, and new CBS show 'Reckless', plus his work on Revenge Season 3.
