The CBK Book Club returns to discuss one of the best DC runs in recent history, DC: The New Frontier! Lance and Jeremy (The Geekly Grind) share their thoughts and takeaways from Darwyn Cooke and Dave Stewart's masterpiece. The New Frontier brilliantly serves as an allegory for social injustice and political change during the 1940s and 1950s in the United States, with an injection of the shifting comic landscape from the Golden to Silver Age.  If you want to connect even more, you can join our Discord where we have a dedicated channel just for the book club! Exclusive: Daniel Warren Johnson on Absolute Batman Annual

Comic Book Couples Counseling Podcast

There's zero doubt, Absolute Batman Annual #1 will be one of the year's most talked-about comics. Featuring three stories by Daniel Warren Johnson, Mike Spicer, James Harren, Dave Stewart, Meredith McClaren, and Clayton Cowles, this hefty comic centers on the early Absolute Universe adventures of Bruce Wayne, revealing how that chonky Batmobile came to be, and just how Black Mask's party animals first encountered the Dark Knight. We read the comic a couple of weeks back, and the instant we flipped that last page, we were compelled to get Daniel Warren Johnson into a Zoom room. Thankfully, he obliged. Johnson's untitled story makes up the bulk of the Absolute Batman Annual. It propels Absolute Batman against a white supremacist horde, showcasing some of the most brutal action from the ongoing series so far, while doing so in a way that questions that violence's effectiveness. As Daniel Warren Johnson has showcased in other comics like Murder Falcon, Do a Powerbomb!, and his recent run on Transformers, badass, jaw-dropping visuals are only half his might as a creator. DWJ breaks hearts as often as he breaks bones. “It's in my blood and it's boiling, and I have to get it out.” In an exclusive conversation with Comic Book Couples Counseling, Johnson explains how his tale in the Absolute Batman Annual came to pass. We discuss his reluctance to contribute to the world so expertly crafted by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, and how one single image eventually caused him to put everything he had into this character and universe. Daniel Warren Johnson tells us why supplying only compelling, catastrophic action isn't enough for him as a storyteller. He requires more than an exclamation point to climax his stories. He needs a question. Absolute Batman Annual is now available from DC Comics. Make sure you're following Daniel Warren Johnson on Blue Sky, Instagram, and his Website. This Week's Sponsors Judge Dredd Megazine turns thirty-five years old this October, and it'll be celebrating with a very special issue perfect for first-time readers! Featuring the return of the critically acclaimed series Dreadnoughts and Megalopolis, this 100-page issue is a brilliant way to jump into the crazy world of 2000 AD. You'll also find incredible new stories featuring Judge Dredd, Judge Anderson, and much more inside! Get a print subscription to the Megazine and it'll arrive through your American mailbox every month – or get a combi subscription and receive 2000 AD each week as well! If you subscribe digitally, you can download DRM-free copies of each issue for only $9 a month. That's 128 pages of incredible comics every month for less than $10! Launching this October, it's the latest entry in IDW Publishing's Kei-Sei line of Godzilla comics: Starship Godzilla, a cosmic adventure. It's written by award-winning scribe Chris Gooch (of In Utero fame) and illustrated by inventive artist Oliver Ono (I mean, come on, did you read their Godzilla: Monster Island Summer Camp? Insta-Classic). The Kai-Sei Era is the only ongoing Godzilla story of its kind, crafted for comics readers who have never bought a Godzilla book and Godzilla fans who have never read a comic. Daryl Hall has been one of the most identifiable voices and songwriters on records and radios for over half a century and he's still doing it. As the lead singer and principal songwriter in Hall & Oates he had a string of hits (quite a few of them co-written with Sara and Janna Allen) that included "She's Gone," "Sara Smile," "Rich Girl," "One on One," "I Can't Go For That," "Make My Dreams (Come True)," "Private Eyes," "Out of Touch," and more. And as a solo artist he's made landmark records like Sacred Songs (with King Crimson's Robert Fripp) and last year's D album, a collaboration with Dave Stewart (Eurythmics). What's the worst thing you ever saw at a sports game? Someone throw a battery at a Make-a-Wish kid? Sure, if you're from Philly, but what if you were from California. On today's episode: we'll talk about zombies and crucifictions and collapsing buildings before we even get into it; we're going to watch the shortest baseball game of all time; and we're going to cut off one of your limbs in one of the more claustrophobic ways possible. And if you were listening on Patreon… you would hear of one of the most extreme, but very different kind of arm-severing examples of self-rescue in history; the story of a must-have, closed-casket-funeral-friendly rescue device and the absolutely brutal, very public early use of it; and a really dirty, smutty explanation how earthquakes work.By popular request, we present The Loma Prieta Earthquake Disaster of 1989! So, we'll end up talking about my history with zombies and a popular crucifixion and a slowly collapsing building - two of three events set in San Francisco itself – all before we settle in to watch the shortest baseball game of all time. Not just that, we're actually going to (for the first time ever) interrupt a safety segment with a Patreon-exclusive retelling of the shockingly horrific and awful just-kill-me-now-already story of Aron Ralston. You might remember him as the guy who chewed his arm off after an 800 pound boulder pinned him to a canyon wall in Utah. He didn't actually chew his arm off though. What he did was at least a thousand times worse. We'll also do a little retelling of the great 1906 San Francisco Earthquake. Can't not do a San Francisco Earthquake disaster without at least bringing it up.Celebrity guest appearances include world famous author and travel enthusiast, Bill Bryson; crucified magician and Jesus' friend, Saint Andrew; real estate suckers Joe Montana and Kevin Durant; all four Beatles; sports broadcasters, Al Michaels and Tim McCarver; newscaster, Ted Koppel; crosstown World Series players Dave Stewart, Mike Moore, Jose Canseco, Dave Parker and Terry Kennedy. All older episodes can be found on any of your favorite channelsApple : https://tinyurl.com/5fnbumdw Spotify : https://tinyurl.com/73tb3uuw IHeartRadio : https://tinyurl.com/vwczpv5j Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w Stitcher : https://tinyurl.com/mcyxt6vw Google : https://tinyurl.com/3fjfxatt Spreaker : https://tinyurl.com/fm5y22su Podchaser : https://tinyurl.com/263kda6w RadioPublic : https://tinyurl.com/w67b4kec PocketCasts. : https://pca.st/ef1165v3 CastBox : https://tinyurl.com/4xjpptdr Breaker. : https://tinyurl.com/4cbpfayt Deezer. : https://tinyurl.com/5nmexvwt Follow us on the socials for moreFacebook : www.facebook.com/doomsdaypodcast Instagram : www.instagram.com/doomsdaypodcast Twitter : www.twitter.com/doomsdaypodcastTikTok:  www.tiktok.com/@doomsday.the.podcastIf you like the idea of your podcast hosts wearing more than duct tape and bits of old Halloween costumes for clothes and can spare a buck or two, you can now buy me a coffee atwww.buymeacoffee.com/doomsday or join the patreon at www.funeralkazoo.com/doomsday

Our first proper episode in a few weeks! Welcome back 2Legs Faithful! For E274 we were honoured to have the esteemed Jeff Slate, a New York City based musician and journalist join us! In this episode we cover a lot of ground! Dylan and Macca's late career albums from 1997 on (Time Out Of Mind & Flaming Pie) being the re-launch for a renaissance for both elder statesmen of rock at the time. "A Complete Unknown", The Beatles solo careers, Wings, Dylan/McCartney's approaches to their archival releases; the standards albums that both have done. Dylan's relationship with George/John and the non-existent one with Macca. We even touch on a little bit of The Who! We dish on how they both sound live currently (double standard ?) and the legacy that both will leave behind. Jeff Slate wrote the liner notes to the 50th Anniversary boxset to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band (2017) as well as the Dylan Bootleg Series Volume 14: More Blood; More Tracks (2018). He has collaborated with Pete Townshend on several projects. He co-wrote a biography on Roy Orbison with Roy's sons. He has also interviewed Bob himself! If this wasn't enough he has his own solo career and he's just recently released his 4th Solo album The Last Day of Summer which features Dave Stewart and Earl Slick. Jeff is known for some controversial "hot takes" and you may hear 1 or 2 in this episode! We love and appreciate honesty here on 2Legs! Welcome back to Big Fat Five—a segment of Drummers on Drumming brought to you by Big Fat Snare Drum, where I chat with my favorite drummers about the stories and records that shaped their sound. I'm your host, Ben Hilzinger, and this week's guest is the incredible Sterling Laws. Sterling is a fellow Pacific Northwest native now based in Los Angeles, but more importantly, he's a Grammy-nominated drummer whose resume is as impressive as it gets. He's worked with artists like Olivia Rodrigo, Kim Gordon, Chappell Roan, NIKI, Matt Berninger, Liz Phair, The War on Drugs, Linda Perry, Aly & AJ, Lo Moon, Poppy, Dave Stewart, and many more. Sterling is out there doing the thing and still manages to bring a unique perspective to the kit while working with such a diverse roster of artists—a quality that's both rare and inspiring. It's exactly why I was so excited to talk to him. So, without further ado, here are the five records that helped shape Sterling Laws into the drummer he is today. Cheers!
