Once more, Kevin and Charlie take on the monumental task society has left for them: going through memorable *to them* television shows by the decade. In this episode, the two tackle the 2010s. You can listen to a new episode of our show on Spotify, iTunes, and Podbean every Tuesday night at 8:30 PM EST! [School of Movies 2025] A cult favourite hangout movie about working in a CD shop in the mid-90s. This one was directed by Allan Moyle, who previously helmed another music-centric, coming-of-age teen drama that should have been way more of a hit; Pump Up the Volume (1990). Statistically almost none of you have seen this, as it's the kind of movie you need a good friend to sit you down with after hearing that you've never seen it, and immediately declared "We're watching this!" Well, we are that friend today, and we are going to detail why this one is worthy of love. It's painfully white, extremely straight and concerns itself with the now-antiquated dichotomy of MTV marketability versus independent spirit, but considering Spotify Killed the Video Star, the themes are still relevant, and the ragtag cast of teens are quirky enough to make this a breezy, endlessly-quotable rewatch. Damn The Man, save The Empire.
In this episode of Mr. Curiosity, someone's missing? Jon is off on his family vacation, but Mindi, Nikki, Shawn and Joe tackle many of your submitted Brown Bag questions (brownbag@wnep.com)! Just what do you call your in-laws? First name? Mom? Dad? Big Daddy? Then, before you know it, Mindi is on the “dark web” in video playback in Japan? What? Just press play!

In this episode of Firsts, Deena delves into the impact of music videos on her life and on the broader cultural landscape. She recalls the 80s and 90s era of MTV, highlighting this new creative frontier that captivated her, particularly through the videos of Duran Duran, Don Henley, Bryan Ferry, Michael Jackson, and Madonna. She discusses the visionary directors like David Fincher who transformed music videos into artistic short films. Deena also reflects on the diminished cultural role of music videos in the current social media age while advocating for their recognition as a distinct art form. The episode is a tribute to the music videos that shaped her aesthetic sensibilities and the talented artists behind them. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Backstreet Boys. Nsync. It's hard to overstate how larger than life these groups were in the late ‘90s and ‘00s. While millions of girls screamed over these boy bands, though, the guys in the groups were getting royally screwed by the guy who built them: Lou Pearlman. The fraud goes so deep, and gets so weird. I want my MTV! And by “my”, The Guys find themselves reminiscing about the good old days of the iconic music video network that is not so much about music anymore. These memories were invoked by the podcast “Who Killed the Video Star?” which traces the history and evolution of MTV. They talk favorite videos, favorite shows that came after the videos, and what MTV is up to now. And even though MTV News is no more, The Guys still bring updates of all things geek, and this week is no different. Robbie switches from MTV to MeTV to watch their new toon channel, Jay warns (mourns?) a slowdown of all things MCU, and Art hits all the rest: DC suit reveals, Star Trek pining for a 4th movie, and Gollum turns to directing. And let's not forget Mother Hubbard's entry into the regrettable superhero lineup. Or maybe we should. Might as well face it, you're gonna be addicted to this episode. It's a thriller.
In our finale, we try to get an answer for our central question: what happened to MTV? But also, for the deeper questions that have been bubbling up over the last eight episodes, what happened to everything? Why does the loss of MTV hit so hard? Is this optimized, algorithmicized entertainment landscape sustainable or satisfying? Can we go back? And… how many episodes did Ridiculousness just get picked up for? In the ‘90s, MTV is established enough to attract Bob Dylan to Unplugged and host its own Rock & Roll Inaugural Ball. But then a survey from the network's research department turns up one small fact about the MTV audience that makes a massive impact on their programming, on popular music, and on traffic patterns in midtown Manhattan. MTV's initial ascent is not exactly meteoric. The network struggles to reach viewers and attract advertisers. Wow. This episode was tough on production. Was it fun to sit down and record with my brother? Of course it was. Was it fun to edit out all the times the video went black during recording? No it was not. Ahsoka is finally over! Some might be happy about this. Others not so much. I can see exactly why either side feels that way. Now that I have made it to season five of Clone Wars, I can see the changes in Ahsoka's character development the creators made along the way. No longer is she the hot-headed apprentice of Anakin Skywalker. Now she is growing into her own as a padawan with her own opinions on the war and how the jedi order perpetuates the conflict rather than end it. You really begin to see her opinion change in the four episode arc on the planet Onderon. Here, the jedi decide to support and insurgency of locals rather than commit the precious resources of the galactic navy to liberate Onderon. The show makes the brave move and even uses the word "terrorism" to describe the actions of the "rebels." Obviously Anakin fully supports the idea of the terrorism to liberate Onderon. Yoda and other members of the Jedi Council obviously strike down the notion and instead decide to supply the resistance with only weapons which only target droids rather than the civilian population. Ahsoka is alone and feels uneasy about her position. She's alone without her master or his master to confide in. In addition, there are hints of romance between her and the ex-separatist. All of these confusing feelings bubbling under the surface for the celibate warrior monk. Do we see any conflict like this in Ahsoka? Of course not. I will link to a video I watched where they describe Dave Filoni as a fraud. Bottom line, I agree with several sentiments the presenter makes. Ahsoka is best if you've seen all of Clone Wars and all of Rebels. It makes no attempt to make the series friendly to a viewer whom has seen none of Ahsoka's previous outings. They also compare all other recent Star Wars shows to Andor. At one point in the video they say Andor worked so well because the without the star wars setting it would still make sense and be a compelling story. Ahsoka, Boba Fett, Obi-Wan etc all rely too heavily on established characters and backstories to they don't end up taking any risks. Andor does not have to worry about anyone's backstory and makes the smart decision to forge their own path without having to rely on fan service. Over all, this episode and Ahsoka as a whole were just ok. What were your thoughts on the show? Did you love it or hate it? In my opinion, the opposite of love is not hate, it's indifference. After watching seasons one and two or The Mandalorian that's exactly how I felt. I did not watch Boba Fett until after having watched season three of The Mandalorian. Only then did I realize the error of my ways and find out I had missed out on important story bits which didn't make sense going into season three cold. Thanks for listening. -Luca Join us on Discord Tweet us @SWRewatchPod on Twitter Subscribe to us on YouTube Subscribe on Apple Podcasts Subscribe on Spotify Email us at StarWarsRewatchPodcast@gmail.com Visit our website starwarsrewatchpodcast.wordpress.com
Re-watch Podcast Ahsoka Part Five Shadow Warrior Here we are recording the podcast episode we were supposed to have recorded in the first place. I admit, I fucked up. Whoops. Moving on. Despite my mistake, I am grateful for having re-watched this episode. Mostly because of Hayden Christensen's reprisal as Anakin. I said it during the episode and I'll say it here, my man still has the moves. It did not look like the they used a stunt double at all! Compare Christensen's performance to Ewan McGregor's. Granted, there is an age gap between the two. It does not change the fact that McGregor looked tired on screen and even though Anakin is dead, Christensen looked alive playing him. Unfortunately, while his performance stood out, young Ahsoka's did not. Nothing against Arianna Greenblatt. As I'm writing this, I see that she played Sasha in the Barbie movie. She was great in that as the snot nosed daughter. While she kinda acts lack a brat in this episode, it's more likely a reaction to the dialog she's being paid to recite. While Hayden Christensen looks good on screen, his delivery of the awful lines written for him were not much better. For many of us, Star Wars is the only film any of us have seen him in. Many more would also agree his delivery of George Lucas's poorly written lines did not help either. This episode was alright. It's not great. Nor is it terrible. If it was not obvious that the star whales would be used to jump to hyperspace to follow Morgan and her goons to Peridea, then you must have been watching a different show. Re-Watch Podcast Ahsoka Part vi Far, Far Away As I write this I am re-watching part VI of Ahsoka. Upon further reflection, I realize we recorded the wrong episode first. The last episode published for Ahsoka were parts III and IV. Sydney and I just recorded part VI for some reason. Needless to say, we'll have to record another episode in the not too distant future or I can delay posting this one until a few days after the next one is published. I forgot to take notes and cannot remember the exact order of events. Whether I remember all of it or not, it was still a very good episode. You'll hear which part as I'm sure it was favorite part of the episode as well. I think for the most part we followed the events of the episode as they occurred. It's interesting to see when Morgan, and her goons arrive at the Night Sister temple, the great mothers are waiting for her at yet another star map. I wonder if the maps are an important part of Dathomiri culture or just a macguffin for plot convenience. We briefly touch on the motivations of Baylan Skoll. We know he survived the purges of Order 66. However, there is no love lost between him, the Old Republic, the Jedi Order, nor the Empire. While he does mention to Shin he's trying to break the cycle of history, it begs the question why try to help the Imperial Remnant? Didn't the empire just lose the war? Yes, Thrawn is their best hope for having any effect on the New Republic strained as they may be. Very curious to see how Skoll's story plays out. Same goes for his apprentice. Will she follow her master to end or forge her own path? Give this episode a listen and let us know what your thoughts are. I thought it was really good. You don't have to wait any longer for that love vibration because we're back talking about a new wave sensation and a Master of Horror apocalyptic freakout! That's right, we're talking about Billy Idol's Dancing With Myself music video directed by Tobi Hooper - and we can't talk Hoop without Returning Champion - the one and the only Patrick Bromley!! Along the way, we dig into all the details: crying Omega Men, Oscar the Grouch, 3rd-floor serial killers, Shrek inserts, living room dojos, and a few Don Knots impressions! Let the shockwaves rock you over the edge for this week's edition of Kill The Rock Star!! #ReleaseTheDongCut Our TeePublic shop for killer merch is right here: https://www.teepublic.com/stores/kill-by-kill-podcast?utm_campaign=18042&utm_medium=affiliate&utm_source=Kill%2BBy%2BKill%2Bpodcast%2B Join the conversation about any episode on the Facebook Group! It's chemistry, heavy metal, and shaggy werewolves as this week we experiment on Kill The Rock Star with Ozzy Osbourne and his 1983 solo smash, Bark at the Moon!! Along the way, we talk over enthusiastic microscopy, explore why this one music video believes women, return to our favorite British sanitarium, and open several poltergeist doorways. All this plus goth funerals, melting skeletons, and an extended conversation on how the reboot of the Scream franchise is getting absolutely screwed over by its lousy producers!! We tell the moon where it can stick it this week on Kill By Kill!! If you want your MTV - you're out of luck. That place is essentially dead. That's why we're cracking the Necronomicon to resurrect the most horrific music videos we then think of on our latest iteration of Kill The Rock Star!! This week, we explore the mind-numbing horrors of middling-level magic performers as we make The Steve Miller Band's 1982 hit ABRACADABA reappear before your very ears!! Along the way, we delve into our ambivalence toward Steve Miller and our seething hatred of The Eagles, Miller's criminally lazy rhyming schemes, ponder the panty styles of angels, and question reports that this video and the main model/actress featured in it are “iconic” in any way. All this, plus bad magic acts, laconic tangos, and the only rat-chicken-baby transition ever filmed!! We're trying to pull a funny episode out of the hat this week on Kill By Kill!! Well here were are folks. Please join me in welcoming back my brother Mike to the podcast. Was he banned? I am going to go on record and say "no." Regardless of the reason, we have another special edition of the podcast for you today. Today Mike and I will be discussing our experience with the sequel to the hugely popular video game Jedi Fallen order. I have said it before and I will say it again. I was so wrong for not playing the game upon release. As I write this I am trying to come up with a reason why not. The only thing that comes to mind is Cal Kestis. In my mind, I backburnered the game because I did not know the characters and did not want to get the know them. Either, I thought they were somehow related to Clone Wars or Rebels and did not think either of those shows were for me at the time. I was wrong. Having spent almost eighty hours with Cal, Greeze, BD-1, Merrin, and Cere, their second adventure far exceeds their first in almost every way. The gameplay was not so much an improvement but, expansion on the mechanics that were already good. In the previous game you have double bladed detachable lightsaber. The natural expansion of the combat system would be to allow Cal to wield dual sabers independently. The developers at Respawn did just that. What about a cross-guard saber like Kylo Ren? Why not? Blaster and saber? Holy shit! Now they have taken the gameplay to a completely new level. Of course the combat would not be complete without expanding Cal's force powers. Upon my second playthrough I realize confusion and mass slam, and mass levitate were some of the most useful. The game still locks off some abilities until you reach certain plot points in the story but, once you make it through the prologue on New Game + you have access to all abilities and force powers from the jump which are not tied to the story. This is the only part of the game that one might consider annoying. Especially on new game +. Some force powers like dashing are only tied to mobility. They do not necessarily make enemies easier to fight, so why do I have to wait until certain points in the campaign to use them. Same goes for the upgrade to you ascension cable. Towards the last third of the game you do not unlock the upgrade which allows you to attach to weather balloons you see all over the place. Regardless of these nitpicks, both games are absolute MASTERPIECES. Do not delay like I did and play them as soon as possible. Between the gameplay, story, graphics, music, setting, there is something for all Star Wars fans. Thanks for listening -Luca As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. And we're back. Thank you for tuning in. Here we are again with another episode of Ahsoka in the bag. It is definitely not notable both episodes debuted on the same day but I am going to bring it up here anyway. Why you might ask? No reason other than fill these opening text crawls with something rather than nothing. We follow up with our heroines Ahsoka, Sabine and Hera as they continue to piece together the mystery of Thrawn and potentially Ezra's location. I have admitted several times on this show I have not watched Clone Wars. However, I am doing my best to rectify that. So much so I am beginning to pick up on subtle references to to Clone Wars. Six episodes will have aired by the time I publish this publish. In that time I kept hearing the name Syndulla and wondering why it sounded familiar. According to the Wookiepedia, Cham first appeared in "Liberty on Ryloth" amongst others. I had no idea he would become such an important character in the franchise that even his descendants would later appear in the Star Wars Universe. In live action no less. Now I am really curious to see what Ahsoka, Sabine, Hera, etc were like in Rebels and how faithfully they have been represented on screen. Look forward to your thoughts and opinions on the show. Greetings my fellow night sisters. Thank you for tuning in. Another day another star wars IP drops DISNEY PLUS. I know we are a little behind on publishing. You can thank my loyal co-hosts for that. However, that will not stop me from holding Sydney's head up to the tv to try and share my passion with her and with you. This first episode provided a lot of mystery. Especially if you have never seen the accompanying show Rebels which aired from 2014 - 2018. Right after the acquisition Star Wars by Disney. While many lament the cancellation of Clone Wars in 2020. We get to see some of our favorite characters like Ahsoka grow and develop as they continue their arc in a new series made by the same creator. Once again, Dave Filoni has managed to impress me with the look and feel of Ahsoka. It can be obvious in some shots CGI has been used, in others its really difficult to tell between practical effects and sets. Since I have started watching Clone Wars, I am have only begun to scratch the surface of Ahsoka's character development and training throughout the series. It has been spoiled for me that she has renounced her status as a Jedi towards the end of Clone Wars. Hence why her lightsabers are neither green, blue, red, or any other color that might associate her as an ally or enemy of the jedi. There is a lot of back story I am missing having not finished Clone Wars. I thought this show was supposed to be about one of the greatest villains the Republic has ever known, not about one of the characters who allegedly died defeating him. I am going to continue to try and watch as much of Clone Wars as humanly possible. Disney Plus does offer a guide showing pivotal moments in the series for Ahsoka's storyline that you can skip between. As fast as that would be to watch rather than seven seasons, I feel bad for the creators if I did that. Not sure why I am trying to appease them but, I am starting to enjoy the show a lot and do not want to miss anything no matter how trivial it may be in the grand scheme of things. What are your thoughts on Ahsoka? The first two episodes released back to back so rest assured Sydney and I will be publishing our next episode soon. Thank you for listening. Hello there my young padawans. I am pleased to announce Sydney has completed her training as a padawan learner. when I met her, she had only seen episode I, II and III of Star Wars.Because of me, she is well on her way to becoming a knight of the Star Wars Universe. Did she enjoy everything she saw, definitely not. Will she groanwhen I am watching them over and over and over again?Absolutely. However, that is love. Unconditional love. Does this mean this is the last time we'll re-watch all nine movies?definitely not. I still enjoy the universe for all it's possibilities, flaws, special effects, new stories, old stories, and heroes long gone. While I may be a Jedi Grand Master amongst my friends and family,I am still but a learner compared to those who have comebefore me. I really want to sit down with my brother mike and AJ and get their opinions on the new trilogy as well as the originals and prequels. My brother and I saw The Force Awakens a few times in theaters together. My old roommate and I saw a midnight showing of the The Last Jedi.AJ and I saw Revenge of the Sith in theaters while we still in high school. And who could forget the man who started it all. My dad. For he is the one who started this all by taking me to see A New Hope in theaters when I was ten years old. When the prequels released, it was obvious Lucas was surroundedwith too many yes men. The people who worked on the filmwere so desperate for more Star Wars on the big screen that every whim of the director was catered to.The orgy of special effects. Terrible writing. Horrendous acting.Lucas did not need to write and direct these movies by himself. However, what they lack, are made up for in their singular vision and storyline. The newest trilogy suffers from the opposite problem. Instead of having a singular vision of an auteur, they aremade by committee. As a result many elements are thrown together that will definitely please some due to their familiarity and wow none due their rehashing of well tread ground.Based on imdb.com and metarcritic.com fan and critic ratingsRevenge of the Sith was the best of prequels. Rise of Skywalker, The Phantom Menace, and Attack of the Clones are by far the worst received out of all nine movies. Regardless of what what fans and critics think and believe, at the end of the day, many were happy that the legacy of star wars will continue on indefinitely. be it, film, tv, books, comics, video games, etc. Thanks for listening.
