Who is responsible for making the Mile High's food scene stand out? What restaurants have created the culinary landscape we know today as unmistakably Denver? In other words, if there was a Mt. Rushmore of this city's dining innovators, who would be immortalized? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are joined by Westword's food editor Molly Martin to dig into our culinary history and create the ultimate list of the people behind the biggest influences on the tastes, innovations, and culture of Denver. Paul mentioned the Jason Sheehan piece on Biker Jim that sparked this conversation. Molly talked about Bill St. John's remembrance of Mel and Janie Master, which first mentioned the idea of a culinary Mt. Rushmore. Bree talked about Adam Cayton Holland's reporting on the Chubby's family saga, Alan Prendergast's story on the formation of Greektown, Patty Calhoun's look back at the fern bars of Denver, and History Colorado's entry on “Daddy” Bruce Randolph Sr. and the Epworth Foundation's Feed-A-Family program. It's Friday, and we're rounding up the news of the week. First, the primaries are over! Now it's time for the Democrats and Republicans to do some soul searching — where will these two internally divided parties go from here? Host Bree Davies and producer Paul Karolyi are joined by our politics and green chile correspondent, Justine Sandoval, to dig into the details of the big losses and surprising wins from this primary. Then, it's really summer now and that means lots of outdoorsy activities and chance encounters with wild animals. Producer Olivia Jewell Love joins to share her list of the top five scariest creatures in Colorado. And of course, our wins and fails of the week. The team talked about Tiffany Caudill''s post on X on election night and this video of the Colorado Democrats trolling GOP party chair Dave Williams. Bree mentioned Jason Sheehan's brilliant tribute to Biker Jim. Paul discussed our interview with Congresswoman Lauren Boebert and Bennito Kelty's piece for Westword about Bike to Work Day. Justine talked about the first case of West Nile in Colorado this year. We want to hear from you! Who would you nominate to be on Denver's culinary Mt. Rushmore? This week, the ladies are joined by award-winning freelance journalist and author, Jason Sheehan. Jason is a book and video game critic for NPR, and has published three books for adults, but his new book, “Children of the Flying City,” is his first for young adults. Jason talks about his career path, the journey of fatherhood, and how unimpressed his kids are by any of his accomplishments. What parent can't relate to that? Also, Celia explains a predicament that left her neighbors inquiring about a certain pair of leggings depicting cats eating cheeseburgers. Restaurant critic Jason Sheehan has a passion for barbecue with all the homemade fixings on the side. He believes barbecue unites us, comforts us and is the only thing he can’t get enough of.
In the age of social media platforms and user-created content, is there still a place for the restaurant food critic as we used to know it? On this episode of Chef AF, our host Chef Jim Berman, sits down with Jason Sheehan, a former professional chef turned food writer— a venture that lead him to win a James Beard Award and later author several books. Sheehan, who’s now a restaurant critic for Philadelphia magazine, likes “the idea of someone going to a restaurant, having something good or having something awful and then telling people about it.”
It was supposed to be a minor snow storm. When it turned into a dangerous blizzard, farmers in the Sunnyside area jumped into action, putting their lives on the line to protect their herds and battle the onslaught of high winds, heavy snow and whiteout conditions. But even after doing everything they could for over 24 hours straight, over 1500 cows were dead on over a dozen farms, leaving the families and their crews devastated. One of the farmers, J&K Dairy owner Jason Sheehan, joins Dillon to share the harrowing details of a weekend they say turned their world upside down.

What is the role of food in worldbuilding? Characters usually have to eat to stay alive -- but food is also culture, and if you're creating a fantasy culture, food will be an expression of those values. Chef Chelsea Monroe-Cassell talks about the origin of her fantasy cookbooks while chef Jenn de la Vega makes us a dish based on the novel "The Lies of Locke Lamora." Authors Elizabeth Bear and Fran Wilde break down the tropes and cliches around SF foods. Chef and author Jason Sheehan talks about his favorite dystopian food. And writer Scott Lynch reveals the fantasy beverage he's always wanted to try. Here's the episode show page with Jenn's Pears and Sausages recipe: https://www.imaginaryworldspodcast.org/fantastical-feasts.htmlLearn more about your ad choices.
