We are sorry to say there will be no podcast episode for this month April 2025!   While we, Don and James are out of town this month, we didn't want to leave you completely hanging - so here's a short update episode to keep things warm until we return next month in May.   In this bite-sized instillment, we discuss the curious and quietly revealed news of Woody Allen's first-ever novel, What's with Baum?, slated for release on September 23, 2025, and published by Post Hill Press.   The book centers on Asher Baum, a middle-aged Jewish journalist wrestling with anxiety, a fading career, and tangled family dynamics — a premise that feels like classic Woody territory.   We do wonder if this is a pivot away from filmmaking moving forward as allen slows down on the movie releases, honestly we are seriously wondering if is this book release even real.. or have WE BEEN DUPED BY Ai? :P   Well... as we all try to figure this out, you will of course, find the Amazon link to the book page below.   What's with Baum? In this captivating memoir, journalist Karen A. Frenkel unravels her parents' and sole surviving grandparent's secret, riveting stories of survival during World War II. How do you shatter the silence that muffles family stories when those who knew what happened are gone? In Family Treasures: Lost & Found (Post Hill Press, 2025), journalist and daughter of Holocaust survivors, Karen A. Frenkel, investigates her parents' unspoken WWII stories. Readers accompany Frenkel on her quest and discovery of how her resourceful parents survived on the run from the Nazis. Her research leads to shocking revelations of one parent's trans-Atlantic escape to Mexico and New York, and how the other eluded capture throughout Eastern and Central Europe with false papers. Having scoured online and real-world archives and visited the relevant cities, Frenkel honors her parents, her sole surviving grandparent, and her lost relatives, who cease to be mere names and who she came to respect and love. The tale Frenkel weaves is both personal and universal, as we begin to feel that her family could be ours. Frenkel also shares her refugee great-grandparents' rare and huge collection of stunning oil and pastel portraits, photos, and documents, which were discovered in 1968 in garbage bags. Most Holocaust families lost everything, but these cherished artifacts reveal the Jewish assimilated culture in Kraków and Berlin that the Nazis obliterated. Readers also join Frenkel on her visit to Vienna, Kraków, Tarnów, and Lviv, Ukraine, where the action took place. Such astonishing tales of survival, resistance, luck, and loss have the power to captivate readers of all generations and backgrounds and inspire them to explore their own family histories. The Vanishing of Carolyn Wells: Investigations into a Forgotten Mystery Author (PostHill Press, 2024) by Rebecca Rego Barry is the first biography of one of the “lost ladies” of detective fiction who wrote more than eighty mysteries and hundreds of other works between the 1890s and the 1940s. Carolyn Wells (1862–1942) excelled at writing country house and locked-room mysteries for a decade before Agatha Christie entered the scene. In the 1920s, when she was churning out three or more books annually, she was dubbed “about the biggest thing in mystery novels in the US.” On top of that, Wells wielded her pen in just about every literary genre, producing several immensely popular children's books and young adult novels; beloved anthologies; and countless stories, prose, and poetry for magazines such as Thrilling Detective, Life, The Saturday Evening Post, Harper's, and The New Yorker. All told, Wells wrote over 180 books. Some were adapted into silent films, and some became bestsellers. Yet a hundred years later, she has been all but erased from literary history. Why? How? This investigation takes us on a journey to Rahway, New Jersey, where Wells was born and is buried; to New York City's Upper West Side, where she spent her final twenty-five years; to the Library of Congress, where Carolyn's world-class collection of rare books now resides; and to many other public and private collections where exciting discoveries unfolded. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In November 1972 as Ms. Magazine hit the newsstands with its inaugural issue, Joan Gelfand left the comforts of Forest Hills, NY and summers in the Catskills for a trip to San Francisco. That vacation became a journey that lasted a lifetime, and a moment in history that is unparalleled. In OUTSIDE VOICES: A Memoir of the Berkeley Revolution (January 28, 2024; Post Hill Press; ISBN: 979-8888450048; $28.99 Hardcover), Joan Gelfand, award-winning author and nationally acclaimed literary citizen, shares her story of awakening-artistically, sexually, and spiritually-during a radical time in a remarkable place. Writing with honesty and lyrical grace, Joan recounts a story of healing from devastating loss while honing her craft as a poet in the midst of cataclysmic social change in which the Beat Generation was born. Finding a 'room of her own' in a quiet, wood shingled house in Berkeley, she finds her tribe: like-minded feminists and artists. Says Joan, "Women are creating safe spaces where they can find their voices in art, books, music, recording, feminist theory, or just plain banging a hammer and competing in a world typically run by men."Bolstered by new friends Cloud, a poet and artist with a tinkling laugh, and Nancy, a working musician, Outside Voices gives a backstage view of artists and thinkers who went on to great things, including a young waitress named Suze (Orman), film maker Barbara Hammer, writers Judy Grahan, Gloria Andaluza, Pat Parker and musicians Mary Watkins, Linda Tillery and more. Hard on the heels of the Free Speech Movement, the Summer of Love and the Beats' disruption of culture and literature, Berkeley was a fertile proving ground. OUTSIDE VOICES tells the coming-of-age story of a damaged teenager putting the pieces back together as she explores independence and self-definition while grappling with sexuality, Jewish identity, and the lingering trauma of her father's death.

In 1929, Bernardine Szold Fritz left Paris on a train bound for China. She was on her way to her fourth wedding, and her fourth husband: An American investment banker named Chester Fritz, who'd proposed after a whirlwind meeting earlier in Shanghai. Bernardine is then forced to find herself things to do in interwar China–and her husband isn't helping much. That's how Susan Blumberg-Kason's newest book, Bernardine's Shanghai Salon: The Story of the Doyenne of Old China (‎Post Hill Press: 2023), starts. The book charts Bernardine's life as she sets up a theater, and makes friends with such illustrious figures like Lin Yutang, Victor Sasoon and Anna May Wong. In this interview, Susan and I talk about Bernardine, her life, and why interwar Shanghai remains such a compelling setting for fiction and nonfiction writers. In today's episode I have the pleasure of speaking with author and investigative journalist Laura Carney (www.myfatherslist.com/Laura). Laura and I explore how ADHD has helped her finish her late father Mick's 54-item bucket list in six years and ADHD is a gift, not a deficit. Laura's first book is coming out from Post Hill Press, distributed by Simon & Schuster, on June 13. My Father's List: How Living My Dad's Dreams Set Me Free is about Laura's six-year mission to finish all 54 items from the bucket list of her late father, who was killed by a distracted driver when she was 25. Her book is a grief memoir, but it's also about self-discovery. And it's out just in time for Father's Day. Laura Carney has been on NPR, Tamron Hall, CBS Mornings and the Drew Barrymore Show, as well as NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and various other outlets to talk about the book. It's also been covered in the Washington Post as well as People. I was interviewed by CBS Sunday Morning, which will air before the launch.

In just the first three months of Fiscal Year 2023, over 7,000 migrants per day on average were apprehended after illegally crossing the border. Those numbers don't include hundreds of thousands of aliens who evade apprehension entirely estimated at almost 600,000 just in Fiscal Year 2022, according to the US House Oversight Committee.    Illegal immigration touches every fabric of American society. This issue needs to be discussed openly and honestly from the perspective of real experience and expert knowledge. The first two years of the Biden Administration, there has been over 10 million illegal aliens allowed to enter our nation. The manifestation of this invasion has already begun to surface, and the effects are profound. The discussion must be more than showing a video of a conga line of people crossing the Rio Grande. Instead, we need a discussion focused on who has allowed this to occur, how are they facilitating this invasion and why this is being allowed to happen to the greatest nation on earth. J.J. Carrell had a 24-year career with the United States Border Patrol. “I made my reputation working a decade on the San Diego/Tijuana border as a Journeyman and Supervisory Border Patrol Agent. I promoted up the ranks from my success running small to large task force units. I retired as a Deputy Patrol Agent in Charge which allowed me to have access to and be a participant in the forming of strategic law enforcement planning and having an understanding of high-level policy development and decisions. I have been a guest on several national television shows like FoxNews and NewsMax as well as a guest on nationally syndicated radio shows. I will have my first book published in June by Post Hill Press. I do not shy away from the truth. My stance on the chaotic and lawless border is based on experience, knowledge, and facts. “He joined me this week to tell me more.     For more information: https://jjcarrell.substack.com/

Also at Wheaton High School, Lou and his friends wrote the school newspaper “The War Whoop,” developing a flair for journalism. That led Lou to the University of Minnesota's journalism program. His senior year, Lou won the national William Randolph Hearst championship in San Francisco — establishing his place early-on as a national-level storyteller.Lou spent three years at KELO in Sioux Falls, S.D., reporting on stories such as the state's first execution in 60 years — a year after it was dramatically halted at the 11th hour. As the cops and courts beat reporter, he covered trials such as Daphne Wright's killing and dismembering of a fellow member of the deaf community. Pay attention and you might catch Lou talking about the case on various national cable crime shows. From Sioux Falls, Lou moved to the Sonoran Desert in Tucson, Ariz., along with his wife Emily, also a reporter. In Tucson, Lou helped launch FOX 11 News at Nine, anchoring the newscast for four years. Along the way, he covered the attempted assassination of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, along with many hot-button border issues. After moving to Buffalo, reporting and anchoring weekends for WIVB, Lou continued to compile awards for his work — through New York State Associated Press, NY Broadcasters Association, and NY Emmys. But his finest awards came in 2013, when Lou and Emily welcomed home their little Buffalo baby Violet, and in 2016 when her little brother Westley was born.In 2015 the family moved to Minneapolis where Lou reports at KARE 11, home of the finest storytelling journalism in the country. At KARE 11, Lou has been at the forefront of some of the nation's biggest stories, leading the coverage of the death of George Floyd and the trials for the officers charged with killing him.One particular story that resonated was the kidnapping of 13-year-old Jayme Closs and her subsequent escape after 88 days in captivity. After covering the criminal case that followed, Lou produced an eight-episode podcast, “88 Days: The Jayme Closs Story,” which peaked in the top 10 on the iTunes Charts. In Feb. 2023, Lou's first true crime book was published by Post Hill Press. “Vanished in Vermillion” flips the script on the genre and reveals all the ways the 40-year search for two missing teenage girls went horribly wrong. While free time is harder to come by with a little one in the house, Lou still enjoys playing Tecmo Super Bowl on NES, competing in fantasy football leagues (including one since 1999), watching NFL football, and archiving home movies and photos from the good old days.
