Bean and Peat are once again joined by Davinia (Dee) Evans, having talked about Scott Lynch's The Lies Of Locke Lamora last time around. How she represents a new type of fantasy author; her own journey, from taking a copy of The Hobbit from the school library and having dreams of being published by Robert Jordan's publisher (Orbit), to the eventual publication of her Notorious Sorcerer trilogy.... with Orbit. Along the way how Dee's own Notorious Sorcerer evolved from fan fiction, being raised on British comedy such as Monty Python, The Goodies, and Fawlty Towers (despite growing up in the tropics), and how the fantasy market is shifting away from exploration and towards finding the fantastical at home.

We're back with a new episode delving into Scott Lynch's debut novel, ths 2006 historical fantasy The Lies Of Locke Lamora, the first in Lynch's "Gentlemen Bastards" series. Set in the city of Camorr, the book introduces us to the Bastards, a group of elite con men who rob and inveigle the rich, and get tangled up in a new criminal mastermind trying to take over the city's underworld. The novel was nominated for several awards upon its release, winning the SF Site Readers' Choice Award in 2006.Bean and Peat are joined by Australian fantasy author Davinia Evans, whose Notorious Sorcerer trilogy novels (Notorious Sorcerer, Shadow Baron and Rebel Blade) have seen her become one of the most exciting new voices in fantasy fiction. Here they talk about how the setting of Camorr - an ersatz, mystical take on Venice - makes LOLL different from more traditional fantasy worlds, the character dynamics crafted by Lynch, and some highly innovative swearing.

Lots are going on this spring at the American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA), and President and CEO Scott Lynch returns to 'HPAC On The Air' to update us on all of them. From BOILER Expo 2026, held earlier this spring in Nashville, to ABMA's new online Resource Center and its fascinating new History Timeline, Lynch conveys at least some of the energy driving the growing international organization in 2026.

This episode with Daniel Radigan is one I have been looking forward to for a while. Danny is a 3L at Case Western Reserve University School of Law and a finalist for Rhetoric's Moot Court Madness competition. Danny takes us down his journey, from growing up in Cleveland to playing Division I soccer as a goalie at Duquesne University, to working for his distant cousin Scott Lynch at a small probate firm in Chardon, Ohio, that ultimately sold him on going to law school.What stands out about Danny is just how much he has taken advantage of his time in law school. He has stacked clerkships and externships at the Milton Kramer Law Clinic, the U.S. Attorney's Office, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Ohio, and a summer associate position at Porter Wright, all leading up to a summer at Baker Hostetler and a federal clerkship lined up after graduation with a Judge in Pittsburgh, who he actually took a pre-law class with as a junior in undergrad. A full-circle moment if there ever was one. Boiler performance rarely depends on a single decision. It depends on design, controls, maintenance, workforce capability, and, as this conversation makes clear, the quality of water treatment. Scott Lynch and Shaunica Jayson explain how American Boiler Manufacturers Association (ABMA) is addressing those realities by connecting manufacturers, representatives, suppliers, and field stakeholders around education and practical guidance. Why ABMA still matters in a changing boiler market ABMA has been in place since 1888, but this discussion is not about preserving old structures for their own sake. Scott and Shaunica describe an association that has expanded beyond traditional manufacturer membership into a broader supply-chain view of the boiler room. That includes boiler, burner, deaerator, and economizer manufacturers, component suppliers, service providers, consultants, and manufacturer representatives. That broader view matters because boiler performance does not begin and end with the vessel itself. Decisions made across installation, controls, service, and water treatment shape efficiency, reliability, and long-term asset life. Education that reaches the people actually running boiler rooms A strong theme throughout the conversation is education. ABMA is reaching beyond its own meetings to speak with healthcare engineers, food processors, facility engineers, and other sectors that rely on boilers every day. Scott outlines the practical angle of that work: what operators should be doing on a daily, weekly, monthly, and yearly basis to keep boiler rooms safe and efficient. Shaunica adds that ABMA is building toward a larger resource center, on-demand materials, and expanded access to white papers and best-practice guidance. They also discuss partnerships with trade schools and Maritime Academies as part of a larger workforce strategy. For water professionals, that matters because better-informed boiler operators create better conditions for treatment programs to succeed.   Water treatment is not a side issue One of the clearest takeaways is that water treatment remains central to boiler performance. ABMA's work with the Association of Water Technologies is helping align deaeration and chemical treatment perspectives into a single, co-branded guidance document. That effort is meant to reduce finger-pointing, improve technical clarity, and give end users a more unified message. Scott is direct about the operational stakes: poor water treatment drives scaling, damages equipment, and undermines efficiency. The discussion also pushes back on outdated assumptions about boiler rooms, highlighting gains in efficiency, modern controls, remote monitoring, retrofit options, and emerging technologies such as hydrogen, dual-fuel, and hybrid systems. Today the SibNerds unpack The Last of Us season 1! While we approached the show from different starting points (Anna has little experience, and Josef has played several times), we both really enjoyed the concept and the storytelling. We get into the nitty gritty of some elements and probably gloss over things we could have talked about for hours! There's just SO MUCH.
