Some plants out there have mastered the art of mimicry, and they're not to be messed with! Take the corpse flower, for example—it emits an odor that smells like rotting flesh to attract pollinators. Then there's the Venus flytrap, which lures in unsuspecting insects with sweet nectar before snapping shut and devouring them. Another tricky character is the pitcher plant, which uses its pitcher-shaped leaves to trap and digest insects. So, if you ever come across these sneaky plants in the wild, it's probably best to admire them from a safe distance—eating them definitely isn't on the menu! I'm pretty sure I first encountered the plant called mala mujer in the Santa Rita Mountains south of Tucson around 30 years ago. I had 10 years of commercial horticulture under my belt and I had become a native plant geek. “To heck with all these exotics,” I'd shout to people, “Grow native!” Yes, an obnoxious native plant geek. Anyway, I'm also pretty sure I turned that encounter into a Growing Native episode and I mispronounced the genus Cnidoscolus. “The C is silent,” a good friend botanist/horticulturist gently told me. Where would I be without friends like that? There are close to 100 species of Cnidoscolus found in North America, South America and the West Indies. They range from perennials to shrubs to trees and they’re so fascinating that some folks collect them…Kids collect the whole set! And listen, many of the species used to be in the genus Jatropha, which is so very cool, because I saw Jatropha macrorhiza and Cnidoscolus growing side by in the Mule Mountains. Well, I thought it was cool. If you were to look up Cnidoscolus angustidens on SEINet https://swbiodiversity.org/seinet/ you'd find some neat photos of the flowers with their interesting stamen and pistils. The photos here are mine and taken on the day described in this episode.
Since producing this episode of Growing Native we have encountered Jatropha macrorhiza a couple more times. A recent sighting was…
Colin Lowther and Robin Basselin look at the promises and problems of the Jatropha plant. Does it help or hurt farmers?
Eric Mathur currently serves Chief Science Officer for TILT Holdings where he oversees the Company's efforts on Cannabis molecular breeding program for the development of pure-line hybrid cultivars with defined chemical profiles tailored for specific therapeutic medical applications. His expertise and knowledge traverses' genome sciences, molecular biology, environmental microbiology, plant-microbe interactions, metagenomics, enzyme & drug discovery, plant domestication and applied biotechnology. Mathur's career spans over 35 years in basic and applied biotechnology with focus on translational science. Eric entered the San Diego biotechnology arena early, in 1983 as founder of Stratagene, where he discovered and commercialized Pfu DNA polymerase, which is still a mainstay enzyme used in the PCR industry. After a nine years' tenure, Mathur was recruited to become the first employee of Diversa Corporation, which later achieved the largest biotech IPO of the time, raising $200MM in 2001. At Diversa, Eric managed a large scientific team and multiple corporate collaborations with industrial partners including Syngenta, Dow Chemical and BASF. Following 14 years with Diversa, Mathur was recruited to start Craig Venter's company, Synthetic Genomics where he led research efforts in microbial enhanced hydrocarbon recovery sponsored by BP; he also spearheaded the genome sequencing and annotation the oil palm genome for Genting Berhad; and established a platform for plant growth promoting bacteria which led to the spinout, Agradis and subsequent Monsanto acquisition. Eric's interests then turned to plant genomics and crop domestication; he worked as Chief Science Officer for several companies including Yulex Corporation and SG Biofuels, GreenKiss NY and Cultivation.Technologies Inc., where he applied modern genomic tools and plant molecular breeding methods to accelerate plant productivity. The work culminated in dramatic yield improvements in two sustainable crops, Guayule for natural rubber production and Jatropha for biodiesel. Eric Mathur is an internationally recognized speaker who authored over 50 peer-reviewed publications and is named inventor on 100+ issued patents. Eric's passion lies in leveraging genome-based technologies to develop nutrient dense foods and therapeutic medicinals; Mathur is also an ardent supporter of sustainable agricultural and does his part to help secure global food & energy security, while minimizing the impact on our fragile environment.Find and Learn from at the following linkshttps://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/8u788aek8BVDwWhttps://www.slideshare.net/slideshow/embed_code/key/zoKogkEVxdBb13To learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF: https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkh
Maria Merian was born in 1647. At the time of her birth, Shakespeare had been dead for 30 years; Galileo had only just stood trial for arguing that the Earth moved around the Sun. And yet, here in Germany, was a child who would become an important but oft-forgotten figure of science. Aged 13, she mapped out metamorphosis, catching caterpillars from her garden and painting them in exquisite detail. At that point, most believed that caterpillars spontaneously generated from cabbages and maggots materialised from rotten meat. She later voyaged to Suriname in South America to pursue pupae further, discovering not just new species but also the conditions needed for their survival. Some call her the first field ecologist; others admire her for her eloquent brushwork. However, her studies will help today’s biologists plot which insects lived where. These data are invaluable because this could help scientists predict what species will survive climate change. Naomi Alderman discusses the life and legacy of Maria Merian with biologist and historian Kay Etheridge from Gettysburg College, Pennsylvania and biologist Kathy Willis from Kew Gardens. Planting the shrub jatropha in arid regions worldwide could sequester enough carbon to offset the annual CO2 pollution of China, the E.U. and the U.S. combined. David Biello reports
The glow from burning jatropha seed torches has often saved Maruti Chindu from treading on snakes, but now he carefully nurtures them for a use that he never imagined before -- running cars and trucks.
