Veronique Lee, once a partner at revolutionary sustainable beauty and fashion retailer Modavanti, brings over 15 years of sustainability and wellness expertise to her CandaScent Labs venture. In this episode, Veronique shares the emerging science-based necessity for supporting Olfactory Wellness and her passion for sustainability through the lens of her Economics and Political Science education. CandaScent Labs is a health and wellness aroma brand with a collection of products built to promote whole-body wellness through the olfactory system. Later in her career, while working with chemists on cannabis research and product development, Véronique learned more about cannabinoids and terpenes. She became interested in exploring the synergy of plant compounds, particularly beta-caryophyllene, and its applications towards wellness. This motivated her to create healthier, synthetic-free aroma products supported by terpene science, removing the elusive "fragrance" ingredient. Thus, CandaScent Labs was born. "Canda", from the Latin, means candid, pure, clean, transparent, kind – all hallmarks of the brand's DNA. CSL's formulations harness the synergetic power of botanical ingredients beyond Beta-Caryophyllene, to elevate your mood, reduce your stress, boost your brain, and fortify your immunity with ingredients that possess anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Véronique graduated from Stanford University with a BA in Economics and Political Science and has served as a board member of Friends Without A Border and an Advisory Board Member of the Fashion Institute of Technology. In addition to her roles in beauty and fashion, Véronique also brings experience working for one of the largest grain merchandising companies in the world, where she saw how the desire for efficiency and profitability was transforming how our food was made, sourced, processed, and marketed. These processes were not healthy for our planet or our health. When she experienced the same thing happening in fashion, she began bringing artisan and eco-friendly brands to market.Useful LinksWebsite: https://candascent.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/candascent/LinkedIn Véronique Lee Olfactory Wellness: 5 Lifestyle Tips to Enhance Your Sense of Smell and Why it Matters.Beta-Caryophyllene: Anti-Inflammatory and Antioxidant Beta-Caryophyllene - Our Hero Ingredient. To learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkh Disclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice. Susan M Parker, author of Power of the Seed: Your Guide to Oils for Health and Beauty published in 2015, is one of the first books to focus exclusively on the lipid or carrier oils rather than as dilutents for aromatherapy or their use in the massage and beauty industry. In this episode, Susan talks about her continuing fascination with plant lipids, using her herbal background to link botanical families as she educates others on the types of oils they produce.Inspired by an herbal apprenticeship in the early1990's, Susan established SOLUM&HERBE an herbal apothecary in 1996 focusing on skincare and topical treatments. Making herbal extracts, including oil infusions from her gardens, awakened a desire to know more about the infusing oils.Unable to find a comprehensive guide to understand these carrier oils better, she began to learn about them. With an art background but little chemistry, Susan worked with a chemist friend to understand the basic chemistry of lipid oils. To help ground the learning process, she began writing up her notes and self-published a small booklet on the subject in 2001. Drawing on her Art degrees from the 1970s, she cut and pasted the booklet together and made 100 copies available to the local herbal community in Northern California. In 2015 Power of the Seed, much expanded and further researched, was published by Process Media, Port Townsend, WA.A student of natural health, gardener, herbalist, flower essence devotee, mother, and now grandmother, Susan studied herbalism with Pam Montgomery and David Hoffman in the 1990s. After 22 years of creating and producing a range of products, SOLUM&HERBE ended production in 2018. Susan continues to research and teach about lipid oils online. Scott Holden is the founder and CEO of Lab Effects & CBD Global, two vertically integrated hemp companies that span cultivation, extraction, formulation, and global distribution operations. In this episode, Scott talks about his return to the biological sciences to focus on hemp CBD product development to find a high potency and non-intoxicating solution for his father's chronic illness. His unique medical training background, complex software development, and personal experience developing cannabinoid and terpene formulations make his take on the future of individualised medicine profound. Holden has degrees in biochemistry and molecular biology and once worked as an emergency medical technician. After deciding not to pursue studies to become a physician, he wound up working in software sales and marketing for IBM. In 2014 Scott created Cannabis Transparency Standards™ (CTS), the hemp industry's first chain of the custody compliance program. CTS provides material pedigree compliance and transparency beyond current pharmaceutical standards and is now in the process of being block chained with a crypto token payment option to free businesses from banking and merchant underwriting control. Prior to the hemp industry, Scott worked in software consulting for companies like Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, and Boeing. Scott unexpectedly resigned as CEO to find an alternative treatment to chemotherapy for his father's chronic myelomonocytic leukemia (CMML). The diagnosis came with an 18-month prognosis but has since become a successful battle of 9 years and counting. Lab Effects & CBD Global were born not from opportunity but necessity. Now focused full time in hemp, Scott applies his formal education in molecular biology and biochemistry to conduct research and develop natural plant-based drug delivery systems that offer patients healthier and more convenient alternatives to traditional pharmaceutical drugs. Through the use of terpenes, Holden says he's helped people experiencing a wide range of health conditions -- including his father, who'd been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia. Lab Effects sells Therapeutic Terpene Blends with formulation names such as Oncology, Relax/Sleep, Pain/Inflammation, and Focus/Active/ADHD.Useful Linkshttps://labeffects.comhttps://cbdglobalextracts.com/https://www.linkedin.com/in/holdenhawaii/To learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkhDisclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice. Jill Todd, DVM, CVA, CVCP, Holistic Veterinarian began her undergraduate training in Biological Science, Botany, and Agriculture – "the long route," if you ask her. However, she wanted to understand medicine at its core, so she started at plants. After earning her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and a BS in Veterinary Science, Jill worked in a small animal emergency clinic then purchased Animal Care Clinic in San Marcos, Texas – a private practice that she owned and operated for 10 years. Jill talks about merging veterinary training with complementary therapies in this episode, including aromatherapy and hemp. When her dog, Tally Ho, was not recovering from surgery alone, Jill began experimenting with holistic therapies in desperation. They worked. This launched Jill into a whole new healing path. She went back to school and became certified in Veterinary Acupuncture and became a Veterinary Chiropractitioner with advanced training in Veterinary Cold Laser Therapy. Jill then sold her practice in 2008 and moved to the Pacific Northwest, where she launched J Todd Veterinary Acupuncture and Complementary Veterinary Medicine. While in the PNW, Jill discovered aromatherapy and essential oils. She started to use them at home, on herself and her animals. Jill found the power of plants could help relax and heal herself, her animals, and eventually her clients. Jill's search for healing animals has resulted in a robust and diverse skill set that expands far beyond veterinary qualifications. Her ability to read animals at a soul and energetic level – to pick up on their pain, anxiety, fear, or aggression – wasn't learned in school. It's an intuitive gift that remains one of life's beautiful mysteries, a gift that Jill humbly uses to serve animals. When she later discovered the powerful healing effects of hemp extract on her own animals, she knew it had to be incorporated into her practice. Today Jill works out of her home in Kirkland, WA healing animals, teaching acupressure and meridian touch therapy virtually, and virtually consulting worldwide. J Squared Healing was created to help heal animals energetically, starting with nutrition and using the best of both worlds, eastern and western veterinary medicine. Holistic veterinary medicine is Jill's passion and pride. Jahwei Chen-Graf, B.Nat (SCU), is a Clinical Herbalist, Naturopath, and owner of Remedy Garden, a thriving, community-centered herbal apothecary in Northern California. In this episode, Jahwei talks about our birthright of using plants to heal, her experience using vibrational remedies; homeopathy, flower essences, and the challenge of sourcing local and sustainable herbs to meet the growing demand in her shop. Jahwei maintains a private practice as a clinical herbalist, naturopath, and holistic nutritionist and enjoys helping people reach optimal health by stimulating their own vital force to heal and minimize any obstacles to cure. She loves teaching and is grateful for the opportunity to learn from her mentors, clients, and students alike. Her approach is heart-centered, practical and seeks to incorporate wisdom from both the traditional and scientific systems of medicine. She completed a Bachelor of Naturopathy Degree from Southern Cross University (Australia) in 2007. Her primary herbal teacher was Dr. Sue Evans, who encouraged her not to be a "brown bottle herbalist' but to go out and form relationships with the actual plants by tasting, growing, wild-crafting, and directly experiencing. Her clinical supervisors, both Australian naturopaths, have a particular interest in homeopathy. Once Jahwei saw patients become better with homeopathic remedies, she began incorporating this modality into her practice. Since moving to Northern California, she has continued learning and being inspired by local herbalists and the plants themselves. Between 2011-2016 she completed herbal apprenticeships with Kathi Keville, Candis Cantin, and Dr. Christopher Hobbs. From 2012-2018, Jahwei volunteered behind the counter at the local herb shop, HAALo, offering her services as a community herbalist, homeopath, writer, and teacher. In 2018 the opportunity to purchase HAALo arose, and Jahwei renamed it Remedy Garden. Cassandra Quave, PhD, is the herbarium curator and an associate professor of dermatology and human health at Emory University. In this episode, Dr. Quave talks about her life's work, bridging the chasm between plants and science, and her new book THE PLANT HUNTER: A Scientist's Quest for Nature's Next Medicines. She is also the co-founder and CEO/CSO of PhytoTEK LLC, a drug-discovery company dedicated to developing solutions from botanicals for the treatment of recalcitrant antibiotic-resistant infections. Dr. Quave is a fellow of the Explorers Club, a former president of the Society for Economic Botany, and a recipient of the Emory Williams Teaching Award and Charles Heiser, Jr. Mentor Award. She is the co-creator and host of the podcast Foodie Pharmacology. A leader in the field of medical botany, she has authored more than 100 scientific publications and has been featured in the New York Times Magazine and BBC Focus, as well as on PBS, NPR, and the National Geographic Channel. Ever taken an aspirin? Thank a willow tree for that. Ever received a shot of numbing medication at the dentist's office prior to a procedure? That was originally discovered in a plant too—the cocoa plant from the Andes. What about a painkiller for surgery? Morphine from opium poppy really takes the edge off the post-op pain. Plants are the basis for an array of lifesaving and health-improving medicines we all now take for granted. In her memoir, ethnobotanist Dr. Cassandra Quave shows us how important studying plants is while sharing her own incredible journey. As a person born with multiple congenital defects of her skeletal system, Quave had to get her leg amputated at a young age. While other kids in her class were at football games or school dances, Quave was volunteering her time working at the local ER. Since then, her research has brought her to the flooded forests of the remote Amazon, the murky swamps of southern Florida, isolated mountaintops in Albania and Kosovo, and volcanic isles arising out of the Mediterranean. Filled with grit, tragedy, triumph, awe, and scientific discovery, THE PLANT HUNTER illuminates how the path forward for medical discovery may be found in nature's oldest remedies. Dr. Sally Gouldstone is a botanist and founder of Seilich Botanicals. In this episode, she explains how aromatherapists are pivotal in making a difference in plant conservation. She shifted from academics to create a skincare line using native plants with the first Wildlife Friendly Certification to demonstrate a consumer-driven model she believes will be possible for all companies. Seilich is a natural skincare company with a difference; working with native Scottish plants, growing over 70% of their ingredients within a natural wildflower meadow. Due to their nature-first principles, they have become the first and only company in the UK to gain Wildlife Friendly Certification. Sally is absolutely passionate about bringing nature conservation to the fore when it comes to sustainability and believes that the natural product industry should be conserving rather than exploiting the natural world. Sally's career to date has seen her work in some of the most remote places on earth, from tropical swamp forests of Borneo to the dry deciduous forests of Madagascar, and has given her a deep understanding of the natural world. It is this passion and knowledge that she distills into each and every one of her products. Terry Haggerty is a legend among a circle of elite creatives, known for his exceptional cannabis and genetics. Haggerty, the fleet-fingered lead guitarist for the Sons of Champlin, came to intimately know the original generation of cannabis smugglers and sampled their most exotic wares through his high-profile artistic and diplomatic connections. In this episode, Terry describes his early networks and genetic dedication as equal parts science and artform. He places the experience as a sacrament and creative inspiration over profit. "If it doesn't make you want to make love or play guitar, I don't want to grow it." Behind the stage, Terry patiently collected and cultivated seeds. Born into a family of musicians who circulated among the rich and famous, he learned how money could twist any talent or gift. He believes cannabis has self-regulating dignity and has been cautious about commercial ventures that ignore the intention the plant embodies. Decades later, his highly curated collection of genetics, not easily adapted to mass growing techniques, is finally hitting the legal market in selective locations under the brand Haggalicious. Russ Hudson is a researcher and consultant who has spent more than 30 years working with cannabis. Specializing in the investigation of terpenes, flavonoids, and the synergistic effects between these compounds and cannabinoids. In this episode, Russ talks to us about the magic of terpene molecules, which he describes as the most universal language in the world. Hudson's primary work is focused on reducing the belief in and reliance on "Silver Bullet" theories in cannabis medicine and therapies. Hudson has spent the last 3 years working with top researchers on the world's largest resource on terpenes and flavonoids; a textbook titled "The Big Book of Terps," along with Hudson's new TV show, "Terp Talk." Information about this book and the related TV show can be found on Hudson's website, http://thebigbookofterps.com/. Hudson also provides executive-level consulting services to the cannabis industry in Europe and the United States, offering legal research, technical writing, licensing, compliance, startup, and other cannabis business development counsel and services. His work has been the subject of a VICE documentary, and is partly detailed in Hudson's cannabis-centric autobiography, "Weed Deeds: From Seed to Sage." The Big Book of Terps: The Big Book of Terps is the world's largest resource on terpenes and flavonoids in cannabis, with more than 1800+ citations, 200,000 words, and 100+ custom graphs, gifs (available online), charts, and other images. This significant work includes information not previously known to the cannabis industry, as well as several discoveries not previously reported in scientific literature. Written by cannabis researcher and consultant Russ Hudson, with Sharon Lund, PhD (Nutritional Epidemiologist), and Gloria Fuentes, PhD (Molecular Biologist), The Big Book of Terps required more than 3 years of intensive research to compile and dissect and features commentary by top cannabinoid and terpene researchers including Mitch Earleywine, Ethan Russo, Colleen Quinn, and many others. Elizabeth Ashley is one of the world's foremost essential oil researchers. Unlike other authorities in the aromatherapy field, she looks at the medicine of a plant from every angle, searching for the very earliest archaeological evidence of its spiritual and medicinal uses, right up to the latest discoveries from clinical trials and the labs. In this episode, Elizabeth talks to us about her unusual childhood, a lifetime spent working with essential oils, and the numerous books she has written with her talent for blending mystical, orthodox, and traditional medical approaches. Elizabeth is the daughter of one of the first aromatherapists in the UK, Jill Bruce, one of the founding members of the International Federation of Aromatherapists. She began her professional journey into essential oils in 1992. Following on from her diploma, she then completed her Advanced diploma in 1994, followed by certificates in Medical Dowsing and Medical Astrology, and in 1996, was awarded The Business Excellence Award by Business Link.In 1999, after working for seven years in the family aromatherapy business, she decided to break away and try something new, entering the world of commercial recruitment. There she learned a skill that set her apart from pretty much any other aromatherapist she has ever met…how to sell gently in a fiercely aggressive sales arena. In the 21st Century, this is a perfect description of the essential oil world.Every aspect of this is woven through The Secret Healer books because Ashley fervently believes aromatherapy is set to become one of the single most important healing modalities on the planet, but that most therapists lack the skills to seize that opportunity since certifications and diplomas simply do not focus on business and how to speak the language of essential oils. Her books seek to level the playing field between fact and fiction, orthodox medicine and us!The UK Director for the National Association of Holistic Aromatherapists and an overseas speaker for the International Federation of Aromatherapists, she is also a regular contributor for several professional and trade magazines. She writes about aromatherapy for Aromatika, where her work is translated into Hungarian, Aromaculture, and the NAHA Journal, and about sales and business for Holistic Therapist magazine, and has previously been professionally published by In Essence, the Aromatherapy Thymes, the IFA Journal, and The New Zealand Register for Professional Therapists. In 2018, together with Hungarian aromatherapist Gergely Hollodi, she hosted the world's biggest online summit for professional aromatherapists, Beyond The Essential Oil Recipe Summit, hosting interviews with of the other most respected authorities in aromatherapy.Useful linkshttps://www.thesecrethealer.co.uk/Tongue of the Trees CardsBooks by Elizabeth AshleyCyprus meditationTo learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF: https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkh Disclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice. Wade Davis is a botanical explorer, anthropologist, and naturally engaging storyteller. Named by the National Geographic Society as one of the Explorers for the Millennium, he has been described as "a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life's diversity." In this episode, he talks about the pros and cons of Western mega-interest in cannabis and other mind-opening plants and the phenomenon of what happens when a new drug comes into a culture. Few people are as credentialed as Wade to weigh in on this conversation. Through association with his Harvard professor, Richard Schultes, boots and mosquito nets on- they discovered, documented, and experienced first-hand many botanical, mind-opening substances in circulation today. His global and multi-cultural grasp of botanical history combined with personal experience is extraordinary. A ‘Jimi Hendrix' in his field, he delivers the message that no drug is good or evil, but rather discrimination, intent behind its use, and setting is key to unlocking a new future for all drugs. His clarity of understanding paints a vivid overview of the War on Drugs' global and historical impact. Davis focuses on social justice. Now, as an anthropology professor, he fills his students with wonder and inoculates them with tolerance through his storytelling. A writer, photographer, and filmmaker, Davis holds degrees in anthropology and biology and received his Ph.D. in ethnobotany, all from Harvard University. Through the Harvard Botanical Museum, he spent over three years in the Amazon and Andes as a plant explorer, living among fifteen indigenous groups in eight Latin American nations while making some 6000 botanical collections. His work later took him to Haiti to investigate folk preparations implicated in the creation of zombies, an assignment that led to his writing Passage of Darkness (1988) and The Serpent and the Rainbow (1986), an international bestseller later released by Universal as a motion picture. Davis is an Explorer-in-Residence at the National Geographic Society. In recent years his work has taken him to East Africa, Borneo, Nepal, Peru, Polynesia, Tibet, Mali, Benin, Togo, New Guinea, Australia, Colombia, Vanuatu, Mongolia, and the high Arctic of Nunuvut and Greenland. A native of British Columbia, Davis, a licensed river guide, has worked as a park ranger, forestry engineer and conducted ethnographic fieldwork among several indigenous societies of northern Canada. He has published over 200 scientific and popular articles on subjects ranging from Haitian voodoo and Amazonian myth and religion to the global biodiversity crisis, the traditional use of psychotropic drugs, and the ethnobotany of South American Indians.Useful linkshttps://daviswade.com/IG https://www.instagram.com/wadedavisofficial/Magdalena, River of DreamsCultural & Biological Diversity: A Conversation with Wade DavisAndrew Weil: Books To learn more about plants & your health from Colleen at LabAroma check out this informative PDF: https://mailchi.mp/2fe0e426b244/osw1lg2dkh Disclaimer: The information presented in this podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to replace professional medical advice. Marija is a research scientist-turned-clinical herbalist, practicing in Colorado since 2010. In this episode, Marija talks to us about the fascinating world of endophytes, their surprising influence on the herbal medicine we make, and explains the difference between good and bad research articles. Before becoming an herbalist, she spent a dozen years as a research scientist, focusing on cancer and infectious disease. Despite the high-tech past, Marija's focus as an herbalist is a simple and holistic approach to health that integrates botanical tradition with a critical evaluation of what botanical research science has to say. Marija has been studying herbs, mushrooms, and essential oils intensely since 2008. As a clinical herbalist, Marija helps people to take charge of their health and reconnect with the green world of which we're all a part. As a writer and teacher, the goal is the same, simply on a larger scale. A goal, in particular, is to use her background in biomedical science as a bridge to introduce botanical medicine to those not already on the bandwagon. Marija studied botanical medicine with Pam Fisher at the Berkeley Herbal Center (formally the Ohlone Center of Herbal Studies), with Kathi Keville at the Green Medicine Herb School, and shorter stints with others herbalists. She earned her doctorate in microbiology from the University of Washington School of Medicine while studying cancer-promoting mechanisms of human papillomavirus, the primary cause of cervical cancer. Her postdoctoral research on dengue virus replication was through the School of Public Health at the University of California-Berkeley. She was an infectious diseases trainee at the UW Center for AIDS & STD and an infectious diseases fellow through UC San Francisco Division of Infectious Diseases. Marija grew up running wild in the woods. (Well, at least 'til sunset.) She specializes in work with horses enabling self-medicative behavior by offering plant extracts that contain similar constituents to those found in their evolutionary history. Joan Sorita, born in Los Angeles, California, in a Salvation Army Hospital, is a lover of animals and music. She worked as a vet tech, riding instructor and managed Olivia Newton John's farm. She moved to the High Desert in Southern California to open a re-hab and riding facility. There she became committed to herbs, therapies, aromatics, and animals' recovery emotionally and physically and studied with the elders in the horse world that were doing horse massage. There was not much in this field at the time when she started this work. Joan was the Animal Aromatic Science Course director at Northwest School of Animal Massage in 2017. She co-founded NWSAM in 2001, adding her 25 years of experience in the equine performance world with bodywork and aromatics. Joan has studied with other pioneers in Animal Self-Medication; Caroline Ingraham, Ingrid Martin, Jade Shutes, Kelly Holland Azzaro, Catherine Bird, Nayana Morag. Along with her husband Robert, she owns a farm in Montesano, Wa. They grow and harvest some of the ingredients for their products under the name Therapy Corner Store. Her daughter Casey Sorita now runs the store so that Joan can concentrate on making her aromatic animal products and teach ethics and safety with animals and aromatics. Joan seeks out like-minded thinkers in this field so she can spread the word. Pennington's hope is that Humboldt Seed Company's Pheno Hunt Program will deliver the strains of the future, providing medicinally valuable stable seed lines and specialty strains that will invigorate the market. Before taking on his role at Humboldt Seed Company, Pennington worked in salmon genomics, which gave him the background to understand the need for unbiased cannabis genomics research. Pennington founded Humboldt Seed Company in 2001 to provide strong cannabis genetics to the community that wouldn't require pesticides or fungicides. With a deep foundation in Humboldt County and a strong affinity for community, he has founded several nonprofit organizations, most recently Nature Rights Council, an environmental organization led by Humboldt's indigenous youth. Pennington was instrumental in the negotiations that led to the agreement to remove four dams that blocked salmon runs on the Klamath River, thought to be the world's largest river restoration project. Wade Davis is a botanical explorer, anthropologist, and naturally engaging storyteller. Named by the National Geographic Society as one of the Explorers for the Millennium, he has been described as "a rare combination of scientist, scholar, poet and passionate defender of all of life's diversity." In this episode, he describes an epic journey to Haiti in his early career under Harvard professor Richard Schultes, considered the father of modern ethnobotany, to uncover the source of a mysterious medicine. His deeply inquisitive, scientific, and spiritual investigation shed light on the cultural significance that no drug is good or evil, but rather the intent behind its use. Filled with serendipitous moments and empirical wisdom, he uncovered the racist roots of voodoo portrayal as black magic and political misuse of local medicine by secret societies. He has published over 200 scientific and popular articles on subjects ranging from Haitian voodoo and Amazonian myth and religion to the global biodiversity crisis, the traditional use of psychotropic drugs, and the ethnobotany of South American Indians.
