When an eclipse happens, something shifts. The light changes. The atmosphere feels different. Traditionally, these moments were never treated as ordinary. In this episode, Dylan is joined by Jyotishi and Ayurvedic practitioner Laura Plumb, Vaidya Dr Krishna Raju, Vaidya and medical astrologer Dr Harsha Raju, and mantra teacher Purnesh. Together they explore eclipses through the lenses of Ayurveda, Jyotish and mantra śāstra. They speak about Rahu and Ketu, the difference between solar and lunar eclipses, why digestion and prāṇa are considered more sensitive during these periods, and why eclipses have long been used as powerful windows for mantra and inner practice. Specific mantras and simple ritual guidelines are shared, along with practical recommendations around food, rest, meditation and how to orient the mind during these heightened times. The conversation moves between astronomy, subtle physiology and lived experience, offering a steady and grounded way to approach eclipse events.Rather than sensationalising eclipses, this episode invites a composed perspective. A reminder that moments of shadow can also be moments of alignment.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
In this episode, we dive deep into one of Ayurveda's most fundamental yet misunderstood concepts of Agni. Often translated simply as “digestive fire,” Agni is far more than digestion. It is the body's intelligence to transform food into energy, nutrients into tissues, experiences into learning, and stress into resilience. When this ability weakens, stagnation begins. And stagnation, Ayurveda says, is the starting point of disease.Episode Highlights:Why Agni is considered the essence of lifeHow digestion, immunity, and clarity are all expressions of AgniThe difference between Ama (toxins), Ojas (resilience), and Kapha How does lifestyle shape Agni far more than medicinesWhy are autoimmune diseases not randomSrotas: The intelligent functional pathwaysTimestamps: 00:00 – 05:30: What Truly Governs Health?05:30 – 11:00: What Is Agni Beyond “Digestive Fire”?11:00 – 16:30: Levels of Agni in the Body: From Digestion to Tissue Formation16:30 – 21:30: How to Assess Your Agni?21:30 – 26:30: Agni Beyond the Gut: Mind, Vision, Skin & Metabolism26:30 – 35:30: Strengthening Agni the Right Way35:30 – 41:00: Ancient Bodies in a World of Excess41:00 – 46:30: Mental Stress & Agni Breakdown46:30 – 52:00: Pratyaparadha: When Intellect Turns Against Health52:00 – 57:30: Agni, Ojas & Manas: The Triangle That Runs the Body57:30 – 1:00:00: Autoimmunity Through an Ayurvedic Lens1:00:00 – 1:05:30: Srotas: Rethinking Disease Pathways1:05:30 – 1:11:00: Structural vs Functional Srotas1:11:00 – 1:16:30: How the Body Decides What You Become1:16:30 – 1:21:30: Agni, Dhatu Agni & Why the First Conversion Matters Most1:21:30 – 1:27:00: Can Biomarkers Measure Agni? 1:27:00 – 1:29:30:Treating the Person, Not the ReportAbout Dr Vaidya M PrasadDr. Prasad M, a postgraduate in Ayurveda, has been practicing Ayurveda since 1996. Welcome to Season 8 of Ojas Oasis. "This season begins with a life update that feels less like a chapter and more like a quantum leap. I've moved to Austin, Texas, and the past few months have been nothing short of magic—an intricate web of synchronicities unfolding at a pace that has stretched time itself. Some days have felt like entire lifetimes, shaped by tectonic inner and outer shifts happening at lightning speed. There were moments where the velocity felt almost too much, until I remembered who I am, why I'm here, and what I'm devoted to. When I remember that this path is Dharma, and that it is walked in devotional love, everything recalibrates. The body softens. The nervous system exhales. Even rest becomes an initiation. This journey of building an Ayurveda clinic from vision to reality has been a sacred dance between action and surrender, between my fiery Pitta drive and a deep return to the Divine Feminine. And there are three pillars that have carried me here.First and foremost: my devotion to The Divine and to the Dharma entrusted to me. When you are asked to carry a sacred torch, there is no alternative path—only service, only integrity, only forward motion in love. Second: my friendships and community. My heart overflows when I think of the people who have nourished me, believed in me, and expanded my capacity simply by standing beside me. No poem could ever capture my gratitude—so instead, I choose to live it. A life as poetry. Gratitude expressed in motion, and in stillness when needed. And third: my teachers: those who have walked this path long before me, who initiated me into this lineage, who continue to pray for me as I step into a new level of responsibility and service.Austin has embraced me with open arms. Casa de Luz, the wellness village where Ojas Oasis has found its physical home, feels less like a location and more like family. It is my great honor to step into the role of Austin's village Vaidya and to open the doors of Ojas Oasis as a living, breathing space for healing.I'm so excited to share this journey with you, what it's taken to bring a soul vision into form, the lessons along the way, and what it truly means to build something rooted in devotion, community, and ancient wisdom.May The Divine continue to protect and guide our collective healing journey and bless this space." - SashaSend us a textFor 20% off Kerala Ayurveda products, use code OjasOasis at checkoutFor 20% off GarryNSun products, use code OJASOASIS20 at checkoutFor 20% off Ora Cacao products, use OJASOASIS20 at checkout Receive $500 off your Panchakarma retreat at SoHum Healing Resort with code OjasOasisPK2025 Support the showTo learn more about working with us, please visit www.OjasOasis.com Connect with us @ojasoasis on Instagram, X, TikTok, and YouTube

In Future of the Forest: Struggles over Land and Law in India (Cornell UP, 2025), Anand P. Vaidya tells the story of the making and unmaking of India's Forest Rights Act 2006, a law enacted to secure the largest redistribution of property in independent India by recognising the tenure and use rights of millions of landless forest dwellers. Beginning with the devastating destruction of a north Indian village Vaidya calls Ramnagar, inhabited by landless Dalits and Adivasis, the book follows the interventions of activists, forest dwelling communities, political parties, and corporations during the drafting of the law and traces how each of these coalitions shapes the law's implementation. Vaidya shows how this ambitious law became a battleground of competing legal potentialities — at once a tool of exclusion, dividing forest dwellers along caste and class lines, and yet a platform for resistance, enabling forest dwellers to challenge State domination. A multi-scalar study, Future of the Forest is attentive to the everyday politics of staking a forest rights claim, revealing how the law opens space for fluid (and often extralegal) interpretations, shifting political authority, and diverging aspirations. Anand Vaidya is Associate Professor of Anthropology at Reed College. Raghavi Viswanath is a postdoctoral researcher and teaching fellow at SOAS, University of London. Her research, supported by the Leverhulme Trust, examines how pastoralists claim grazing rights under India's Forest Rights Act 2006 and how the everyday processes of staking such claims has been impacted by the authoritarian turn in India. Tulsi is regarded as a divine plant in ayurveda. It is loaded with medicinal properties, particularly for the physical and vibrational heart, the skin, and the lungs, as attested in the Charak Samhita, the millennia-old Sanskrit text that Vaidya reads and translates during the session. It is also a mandatory feature in any Krishna temple, in India and across the world, where live Tulsi plants are grown in dedicated areas of the temple. This lecture by Vaidya Ramakant Mishra is part of the video seminar "Dravya Guna - Ayurvedic Pharmacopeia", a once-in-a-lifetime series of conferences held at the Prana Center over a three-month span in 2009. The whole collection of lectures totals 45 hours of tutorials, available as streaming videos at www.VaidyaMishra.com.

Lord Caitanya said 'devotee Vaidya.' The Vaishnava, is a doctor. Doctors got a little black bag. Doctors used to make home calls, and Lord Chaitanya says, 'What does he have in that little bag?' That little black bag? The doctor, the Vaishnava doctor, has hymns and instructions—two things to cure the disease of Maya. And it requires this personal touch. Somebody's going to knock on the door. Otherwise, what are they going to do? I'll give you one guess what they're going to do. It starts with an 'S' and ends with two 'L's: Everyone's scrolling! Used to be watching television, but now it's just scrolling. Nobody's doing anything but scrolling. That's why people can't pass a budget. That's why people can't get along. They're too busy scrolling. So, until we knock on the door and say, 'Hare Krishna, and here, please, please be our friend.Radha Krishna bolo, Sange Cholo, ei matra bhikha chai. Our bhikha is only asking people, 'Why don't you just come and chant Hare Krishna with us?' Because you can't have any more fun than we're having in the Krishna conscious movement. It's impossible, because this is the spiritual world. It's just flat-out fun to be with devotees, to chant Hare Krishna, to read Bhagavad Gita. This is the real life. Everything else is a wanna-be life, and it just isn't working. So Krishna again and again gives opportunity, and his touch is very personal. It's one point I'd like to make today: everything's personal. And I'm charmed, frankly charmed, when I read in the Second Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam, 'kare spṛśan,' which means that Krishna shook Brahma's hand and he said, 'Bhadram te -Good luck, Brahma.' "See, that feels good. Everyone wants to do that. If we go in sankirtan, if you're on a road with busy traffic and you see somebody on the other side of the street and you go like this (shows a fist bump), they'll cross traffic, risking life and limb of being run over just to do this, because everyone's missing that. They don't have the personal touch. They want somebody to reach out to them and say, 'Oh, please, touch my soul. Touch my heart.' They can't get it in the material world because everyone's busy with themselves, being frustrated again and again in the love that's professed here. Maybe there's a glimmer, but we can't hold it. People are looking for that deep, loving exchange with Suhrit, their old friend, Krishna. So when Krishna starts the Sampradaya, he puts his good will into it. He speaks to Brahma; he shakes Brahma's hand. He tells him, 'Good luck with making this creation and also passing down the knowledge so that people can take it,' and it's an unbroken line of discipline succession. There are detours, but it's an eternal message that comes down, and Srila Vyasadeva helps to put it into order so that we can take advantage of it and distribute it to others. So we have a lifetime—or many lifetimes—of service, it's an eternal service to enter into that. ------------------------------------------------------------ To connect with His Grace Vaiśeṣika Dāsa, please visit https://www.fanthespark.com/next-steps/ask-vaisesika-dasa/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Add to your wisdom literature collection: https://iskconsv.com/book-store/ https://www.bbtacademic.com/books/ https://thefourquestionsbook.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------ Join us live on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/FanTheSpark/ Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/sound-bhakti/id1132423868 For the latest videos, subscribe https://www.youtube.com/@FanTheSpark For the latest in SoundCloud: https://soundcloud.com/fan-the-spark ------------------------------------------------------------

In this podcast, Tiffany (Ayurvedic practitioner) and Vaidya. Jay Parla discusses an integral part of our daily routine, sleep. Just as food nourishes the body, sleep tends to nourish our mind; it rejuvenates and allows the entire body's systems to reset after a tiring day. From an Ayurvedic point of view, a "deep sleep" is a healthy disconnect of the mind from the body, avoiding any sensation in that period. Lack of it can cause mind-body misalignment and affect our performance and everyday function.A good night's sleep makes your body and mind refreshed and ready for the next day and brings an added enthusiasm in daily activities, making your day a lot more productive. On the other hand, a lack of it can cause mental stress, lack of concentration, irritability, and tiredness. Therefore, 7-8 hours of sleep is mandatory for a grown person to sustain a healthy lifestyle. In case of being unable to get this required amount of sleep, one can do meditation, an hour of which is equivalent to 2 hours of sleep. That brings us to different phases of sleep. According to Ayurveda, there are broadly 3 phases, namely Jagrita, Swapna, and Sushupti.Jagrita, or the awakened state, is the initial phase during which the person is still aware of their surroundings. They can hear what is happening in the background and feel if someone touches them. Swapna is the intermediate state where the mind is in a lucid state. And finally, one reaches a Sushupti state, which is what we earlier described as deep sleep. Jagrita and Sapna can be correlated to REM sleep, where the Sushupti is the non-REM sleep state.Since we're talking about sleep, we shouldn't forget about naps, often taken in the afternoon to 'regain' the energy lost during the day. Though one can take naps in summer for about 30- 45 minutes, it is advised not to take any otherwise. On the other hand, people above the age of 70 can take naps every day for an hour after their meal for about 30-45 minutes as this can help supplement their tissue needs. On the other hand, if they resume working immediately after lunch, their nutritional fluids might not get replenished, leading to deficiencies. It is the same case with someone who is sick or ill.Sleeping is part of everyone's routine and can be different for each individual. For example, people who work night shifts have a sleep schedule reversed to that of a person with a 9-5 job. A key to a healthy sleeping habit and also to a positive lifestyle is adhering to a sleep routine. In the case of people who work at night and face difficulty sleeping during the day can do a series of activities that might help them fall asleep. One is to massage their body with oil before taking a shower, and then take a nap. Another can be breathing exercises and massaging the face and structures around the eyes (24:13). There are certain herbs and ayurvedic supplements that might help if one has erratic sleep schedules. Still, it shouldn't become a habit, and people should instead focus on creating a healthier sleep schedule. Ayurveda suggests that one should eat light at night before sleeping, like rice and steamed vegetables or mild meat like fish or chicken. spicy and pungent acidic food should be avoided since they stimulate the mind and cause difficulty in sleeping. In conclusion, healthy sleep is necessary for any individual's well-being and shouldn't be neglected by calling themselves 'night owls' or 'insomniacs.'Never take your sleep for granted.
As per the diet is concerned one must stay away from diets that our making is he body produce more mucus for example taking a banana milkshake or eating cheese lasagna is not good for this time because they create more mucus which is detrimental to the lung expansion so- keep your lungs clean, keep them free from mucus. A great formula would be honey paste made from a quarter teaspoon of clove, black pepper, as both of them are excellent for keeping the sinuses clear of the mucus and the irritation, then licorice, which is great for the throat as it prevents throat irritation, lastly, turmeric, which is antiallergic. So you put together half a teaspoon of licorice, a quarter teaspoon of both clove and black pepper, and turmeric, and mix it with honey. This honey paste can be consumed by all the family members digging in with a spoon 2 or 3 times a day will help the mucus membrane be free of any kind of irritation.Recipe:1/4 TSP of Clove1/4 TSP of Turmeric1/4 TSP of Black Pepper1/2 TSP of Licorice1 TBSP Raw Honey Or Coconut Nectar or Molasses as a vegan alternativeMix WellDosage:1 TSP 2 or 3 times a day

“There is no curable disease in the universe which has cannot be effectively cured by śilājatu, [but only] when administered at the appropriate time, in combination with suitable herbs and by adopting the prescribed protocol”.~ Caraka Samhitā, authoritative classical Ayurveda textI'm Dylan Smith, an Ayurveda practitioner and educator, and in case you have not heard of Shilajit, it is one of Ayurveda's most revered herbal substances. This potent, mineral-rich resin sourced from rocky mountains is rapidly gaining popularity in Western supplement markets for its purported energising and rejuvenating effects. In this episode, we aim to disrupt the growing fad of shilajit as a dietary supplement in wellness communities. We'll challenge the notion that shilajit—prized in Ayurveda for its potent healing properties—can be casually consumed. Much of what's sold is adulterated or harvested improperly, and often lacks proper purification. We'll explore essential Ayurvedic principles like correct dosage, the right vehicle (anupāna), and a tailored diet (pathya) to balance shilajit's intense qualities and ensure safety and efficacy. When these elements are neglected, shilajit's benefits can be lost—or even become harmful—underscoring the need for proper guidance in its use.My guests include Dr. Sumit Kesarkar, who has spent over two decades harvesting shilajit indigenously across Asia, and the renowned Raju family of Ayurvedic doctors: Vaidya J.R. Raju, Vaidya Pavani Raju, and Vaidya Harsha Raju. Together, we'll offer practical insights on sourcing authenticity, safe usage, and time-tested ways to honour shilajit's role as a powerful rasayana.IN THIS EPISODE WE DISCUSS:
Bikram Vaidya grew up in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, and ran a pub there for years before coming to the U.S. to get a culinary arts degree at Western Culinary Institute/Le Cordon Bleu in Portland, Oregon. For the last 15 years he has been dedicated to cataloguing the cuisines of his homeland. Vaidya has trekked across Nepal and spent time staying with families to learn their recipes and the cultural traditions behind their ingredients. Viadya’s new cookbook, “The Mystic Kitchens of Nepal,” came out a few months ago. He joins us to discuss the work.

A good teacher enables us to stay connected to our intention by reminding us, again and again, should we forget that intention…whilst getting lost in the wild jungle of the untrained monkey mind. We are all together in this grand classroom, for our soul to play out the karmas that it needs to play out, to learn what it needs to learn on its way home, to the place beyond form, and beyond time. On the heels of yet another holiday season, we close out 2024, and interestingly, this year we are doing it on a New Moon. What better time to take stock of our lives, as we enter this new moon and new year. What better time to realize the abundant nature of the Universe, the many gifts we have been given, and how many of those gifts are immaterial, and actually, in the form of teachers, healers, and friends. People we have learned from, people who have been our guiding light in times of darkness. Today's guest, is one such beloved teacher, healer, and friend to many. We could introduce Ramkumar as a Vaidya, a Vedic Scholar, and one of the founding doctors of Vaidyagrama, an Ayurvedic Healing Village in Coimbatore, India that has helped thousands of people heal from around the world through the ancient practice of Panchakarma. We could make a list of his keynote speeches at various international conferences, share personal testimonies of how his satsangs and teachings have impacted me and fellow students, patients, colleagues, and friends of his. But, none of these descriptions seem to encapsulate him. Because this would be describing someone who identifies with their ego, and Ramkumar simply does not. What he is, or who he is, is an actual embodiment of Ayurveda; a living, breathing, flowing, channel of the Vedas, and we are so thankful that today, we get to share him with all of you. May you sit with this conversation, particularly his words, with an open mind and soft heart, and may the doors of curiosity continue to open you to places within yourself that have the answers that you are looking for.
