Fifteen colleges and universities in Pennsylvania, including HACC, are receiving special designation thanks to a recently created initiative to improve student mental health. A new report calls Pennsylvania's teacher shortage a crisis. About 45 counties are experiencing teacher shortages defined as severe or extremely severe, according to the report, by the group Teach Plus Pennsylvania. A pair of Native American tribes have filed a federal lawsuit in Pennsylvania, accusing the federal government of using trust fund money for the tribes to pay for boarding schools where generations of Native children were systematically abused. They included the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, which operated in Cumberland County from 1879 to 1918. A $580,000 cut to programs to combat homelessness in Lancaster County won’t be restored after the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development denied an appeal filed by a county agency. One of the most powerful Republicans in Pennsylvania’s Senate is predicting this year’s state budget cycle will be among the most difficult “in a very long time.” Despite recent rainfall, parts of the midstate remain in dry or drought conditions. The U.S. Drought Monitor’s latest map shows Moderate drought conditions continuing to plague all of Berks County, most of Lancaster County, about half of York County, and about half of Schuylkill County. A Gettysburg College professor has written the first comprehensive history of Yellowstone National Park since the 1970s. And now his book has received a prestigious award; selected from a field of more than 150 historical books, as the 2025 winner of The New York Historical’s annual Barbara and David Zalaznick Book Prize in American History. We take a deep dive with Randall Wilson who explains how the legacy of Yellowstone continues to impact us today.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Dr. Isherwood returns to the podcast to talk about his new book “The Battalion: Citizen Soldiers at War on the Western Front.”    From Casemate Publishers:   “How did ordinary citizens become soldiers during the First World War, and how did they cope with the extraordinary challenges they confronted on the Western Front? These are questions Ian Isherwood seeks to answer in this absorbing and deeply researched study of the actions and experiences of an infantry battalion throughout the conflict. His work gives us a vivid impression of the reality of war for these volunteers and an insight into the motivation that kept them fighting.   The narrative traces the history of the 8th Battalion The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment), a Kitchener battalion raised in 1914. The letters, memoirs and diaries of the men of the battalion, in particular the correspondence of their commanding officer, reveal in fascinating detail what wartime life was like for this group of men. It includes vivid accounts of the major battles in which they were involved – Loos, the Somme, Passchendaele, the German Spring Offensive, and the final 100 Days campaign.   The battalion took heavy losses, yet those who survived continued to fight and took great pride in their service, an attitude that is at odds with much of the popular perception of the Great War. Ian Isherwood brings in the latest research on military thinking and learning, on emotional resilience, and cultural history to tell their story.” Follow the First World War Letters of H.J.C. Tom Bodrovics welcomes back former congressman Dr. Ron Paul from Texas and Liberty Report host to discuss the link between liberty and the economy. Dr. Paul insists that freer societies are more prosperous, advocating for a sound monetary policy as crucial for economic health. He condemns interventionist policies and criticizes the Federal Reserve's manipulation of interest rates, citing 1921 as evidence of a hands-off approach leading to a better recovery from an economic downturn. During the conversation, Dr. Paul expresses his aspiration to terminate the Federal Reserve and proposes steps towards accomplishing this goal, including repealing the Federal Reserve Act and enforcing the Constitution. Although he acknowledges that the process might not be easy due to the nation's addiction to low-interest rates and easy money, he emphasizes the importance of recognizing inflation as a tax on people's money and advocates for Fed auditing as a path to transparency. Dr. Paul supports gold-backed bonds as a means of promoting fiscal restraint and offering individuals a valuable savings opportunity. He denounces tariffs as an ill-conceived solution for economic matters, suggesting instead the elimination of burdensome business regulations. Furthermore, Dr. Paul expresses concerns about government information's lack of transparency and encourages citizens to educate themselves on constitutional principles in order to safeguard individual liberties. Dr. Paul concludes by urging listeners to act upon their convictions and principles, underlining the significance of education in history and economics. He also presents his homeschooling curriculum as a substantial contribution to fostering individual liberty and countering excessive government control over education and healthcare. Ultimately, Dr. Paul underscores the importance of personal accountability and the risks of government intervention in diverse areas. From University Press of Kansas: “Serpents of War” is the memoir of Pennsylvanian Major Harry Dravo Parkin, is a rare account of World War I as seen from the perspective of a battalion commander. As a mid-level officer responsible for the lives and welfare of over a thousand men, Parkin conveys the stress of command at a time when one innocent blunder could cost an officer his combat assignment, brings the inferno of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive to life in terrifying, gory detail, and recounts being taken prisoner by the Imperial German Army—a rare experience among American soldiers in 1918. In addition, Parkin provides a detailed account of the 79th Division's attack on Mountfaucon, a military action that remains controversial to this day. This is a book by a brave soldier, a recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroism on the battlefield, and a gifted writer.   “Serpents of War" is an abridged edition of a nearly 200,000-word World War I memoir that resides in Gettysburg College's Musselman Library, enhanced by the contributions of two scholars of World War I and memory. Written in an unassuming but eloquent style, Parkin's narrative seldom strains for effect. It possesses a strong sense of setting, a knack for capturing the chaos and strange exhilaration of battle, and a sharp eye for the interpersonal, social dynamics of military life—the personality clashes and simmering feuds, as well as the moments of comradeship and accord. “Serpents of War” is an absorbing memoir that holds the reader's attention from beginning to end.   Dr. Trout's Travels in Harry Parkin's footsteps -   https://kansaspress.ku.edu/blog/2024/09/26/on-the-serpents-trail-following-the-footsteps-of-harry-dravo-parkin/ Where to buy “Serpents of War: An American Officer's Story of World War I Combat and Captivity” -   https://kansaspress.ku.edu/9780700635054/serpents-of-war/ The BFWWP is on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/BattlesoftheFirstWorldWarPodcast.    Any questions, comments or concerns please contact me through the website, www.firstworldwarpodcast.com. The growth of inequality between the very rich, and the rest of the populations is the cause. We discuss the development needed to counter this trend. The development needed should be on a geographic scale. Time to allow improvements to take effect is crucial, though positive results should be visible quickly. Otherwise, the resentment of the "left-behind" population will lead to greater instability worldwide. Immigration should be viewed as a positive, since that is often the only source of population in areas that are suffering because of a lack of productive workers.  WNHNFM.ORG   production

Send us a textWelcome back to 50Talk. The Host's Victor and Cathy are glad you are able to join us again this week. This week is our 3rd Anniversary of doing 50Talk and also this week is our 28th Anniversary so we wanted to "re-introduce" ourselves. Before we do that make sure you all check your Voter Registration or Register to vote. It's October now and election day is right around the corner. After our re-introduction to our new listeners we get right into our stories. The first story is another update to the Titan Submersible story from just over a year ago. Week two of the trial/investigation of the incident is in the books. The Owner of the company put greed before safety. In the Show Me State of Missouri Marcellus Williams was put to death by legal injection. There is a lot of controversy aimed at the courts about some information that was discovered that left questions about the case. The Governor and the Supreme Court decided to move on with the execution anyway. A story and an immediate update to the same story out of Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania has a lot of people scratching their heads. An African American student athlete had the word "nigger" carved/scratched on his chest. Listen to the craziness coming out about this incident. Cathy hits us with the topic " some incited on how to make it to 30 years of marriage", we discuss how we did it and how we had to work on somethings to make it work this long. Just because we've been together this long doesn't mean you don't work a your marriage daily. Enjoy the conversation. This week we finally tell all about the series "Outlast" on Netflix. We have waited long enough to talk about it. It's a great season but I think the next season should be somewhere other than Alaska. The last thing before we close out this weeks episode is the death of Pete Rose (83) aka Charlie Hustle. I still think he is one of the greatests to play the game but didn't get a chance to see himself make it into the Baseball Hall Of Fame.Thank you for joining this week and we will see you all next week.

We cultivate Counter-Racist Media Literacy by scrutinizing journalists' word choices and using logic to deconstruct what is reported as "news." We'll use these sessions to hone our use of terms as tools to reveal truth, neutralize Racists/White people. #ANTIBLACKNESS To christen the new season, Whites in Missouri executed Marcellus Williams in spite of numerous protests and allegations of a wrongful conviction. Williams' family reports that even after the execution they continue to receive death threats. At Pennsylvania's Gettysburg College, an unidentified member of the school swim team has disenrolled after charges that someone used a box cutter to scratch niggra on the chest of a black student. No criminal charges have been filed and the alleged Race Soldier has not been identified. The Department of Justice charges that the Lexington, Mississippi police are engaged in a pattern of terrorizing black citizens - which includes sexual abuse. This is not the same location as the "Goon Sqaud" - that's Rankin County, Miss. The "Magnolia State's" favorite son, drug addict, NFL quarterback, Brett Favre was grilled by congress this week for allegedly looting Mississippi's TANF (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families) funds. He blamed it all on a recent diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. #LiveFromDeathRow #TheCOWS15Years INVEST in The COWS – http://paypal.me/TheCOWS Cash App: https://cash.app/$TheCOWS CALL IN NUMBER: 605.313.5164 CODE: 564943#

The possibility of drivers dying by suicide on the track has long been acknowledged, sometimes alleged, but seldom proven. It remains a forbidden topic, because drivers are unwilling to admit any weakness, much less depression. The case of Pete Kreis, however, offers an opportunity to examine a case which resulted in two purposeful deaths at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Pete raced at Indy from 1925 to 1934, when he and his riding mechanic died in Turn One. A “coroners' jury” of Indy drivers, track officials, and other experts could not identify any obvious cause for the accident, calling it “the strangest death in all racing history.” After 50 years of research, Walker reached the conclusion that Pete took his own life. The results of his investigation were published in The Last Lap: The Mysterious Demise of Pete Kreis in the Indianapolis 500 (Octane Press, 2023). A long-time fan of open-wheel racing, William T. Walker Jr. was introduced to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indy 500 by the broadcasts of Sid Collins. He grew fascinated by the careers of his cousins Pete Kreis and Rex Mays, both Indy drivers. He earned his BA and MA from the University of Virginia. After teaching at Lamar University and the University of New Orleans, he served as associate vice president at Virginia Tech, Gettysburg College, and William & Mary. Since retiring, Walker has returned to an enduring love — researching and writing narrative history books. His first book was Betrayal at Little Gibraltar, a study of a World War I battle published by Scribner in 2016, followed by The Last Lap, the story of the fast lap and strange death of Pete Kreis.  ===== (Oo---x---oO) ===== The Motoring Podcast Network : Years of racing, wrenching and Motorsports experience brings together a top notch collection of knowledge, stories and information. #everyonehasastory #gtmbreakfix - motoringpodcast.net More Information: https://www.motoringpodcast.net/ Become a VIP at: https://www.patreon.com/ Online Magazine: https://www.gtmotorsports.org/

It's understandable, considering Lincoln's extraordinary leadership during the darkest and most fragile period in the country's history.  Today, our nation confronts a vast array of serious challenges that threaten to undermine its strength and the trust of its citizens. The Book I HAD to Write
What is the future of literary journals? with Travis Kurowski

The Book I HAD to Write

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 24, 2024 23:29

Last fall, administrators at Gettysburg College announced the shuttering of the prestigious Gettysburg Review. This just seemed like the latest in a long string of magazines and journals that have closed the past few years.Curious about what's going on, I called Travis Kurowski, a leading expert on literary magazines, to help me understand what was happening. Today's podcast features the interview we recorded in the immediate aftermath of the news last October. But, Kurowski, who has also appeared on CNN.com and elsewhere, was able to shed light on broader themes and trends. We discuss why an entire ecosphere of literary journals—supported for nearly 100 years by institutions of higher ed—may also be in deep trouble. And we explore the ways in which recent tech has changed reading habits, and why that will continue to doom some journals, even as others are adapting themselves to stay relevant to 21st century literary culture. This conversation is well worth listening to for anyone who wants to publish in—or is concerned about the well-being and future of—literary magazines and journals. Some of my biggest takeaways from this interview* Outside prestige isn't enough to save storied journals like The Gettysburg Review. While many writers took to social media to point out that most of the world wouldn't know about Gettysburg College if it wasn't for the Review, that argument didn't seem to matter much to administrators. The problem was, rather, one of economics…and the readiness with which both college administrators and corporate interests are willing to cut arts funding. As with pretty much every business in the world, the pandemic gutted operating revenues at Gettysburg; it has been running significant deficits recently—a $6.7 million deficit in 2021 alone. When the college was looking for expense lines to cut, they focused on those (like the Review) which, they claimed, didn'tdirectly enhance student life. That last argument is a highly dubious one, by the way. Plenty of students learned a ton about literary publishing thanks to helping to produce the Review over the years. But this is the story that the administrators told themselves and the rest of us.* The sustainability of literary journals—especially those connected with colleges and universities—feels more fragile than ever.Literary journals have been associated with higher ed for almost a century. Often these journals were seen as prestige projects, aimed at enhancing the institutions beyond its walls—even as these journals were often subject to the vagaries of institutional budgets, priorities, and department allegiances."Literary journals have been on higher education campuses for...almost 100 years now...and sometimes they get cut from the budgets," Kurowski says. The difference today? Higher ed is facing greater economic pressures than ever before. Bloated administrations and a major decrease in enrollments—what Kurowski calls “the cliff of 18-year-olds”—are shrinking budgets. And with college and university budgets facing bleak prospects for the foreseeable future, the days of university-funded literary journals and similar prestige projects may be behind us.* Many literary journals haven't adapted to the digital “literary economy”…and they're getting left behind. It won't be news that the way we consume media has radically changed even in the span of a decade or two. With the advent of the internet and mobile technology, readers have migrated, en masse, to the digital landscape. And that has major implications for old-school print literary journals:“You walk down any hallway, anywhere in your house, right? And we're just staring at their phones. We're reading differently, we're writing differently, we're talking differently online. But our literary journals kind of look the same as they did 50 or 70 years ago,” Kurowski says.By way of example, Kurowski points out that when he went to look at the Gettsyburg Review website to prep for our interview, he wasn't able to click on any of the poems or short stories. So it's really necessary for journals to reassess how readers today (and beyond) are accessing their content.* Readers are no longer reading cover-to-cover…and journals need to embrace that change. The problem goes beyond clickable websites. The very way we consume print magazines has profoundly shifted—something that publishing expertJane Friedmanhas explored extensively. In her book The Business of Being a Writer, Friedman argues that the digital revolution has brought about the “disaggregation” of media. She means that journals are no longer consumed whole, cover-to-cover, but experienced in pieces, sometimes on platforms or in environments disaggregated, or pulled out, from their original format.Today, you can engage with the New Yorker through its website, podcast, app, or even live, as with its New Yorker festivals. In other words, the magazine has unbound—or disaggregated—itself.Similarly, lit journals may have to learn to move beyond their print editions if they want to connect with new readers today. “You don't want to focus too much on the container but rather the content,” Kurowski says.* Additionally, journals need to do a better job of “community building” …and those that are doing so are succeeding.Kurowski underscores the importance of creating community beyond the physical pages of the journals. The value of literary journals today goes well beyond the content they feature…and has a lot to do with the cultural experience they can offer.“If a journal is not doing that, if they're not creating a brand, creating a community, creating an experience…it's going to be hard for them to fit into the 21st century, where content is essentially expected to be free,” he says.He cites publications like The Georgia Review and even the newly-revived The Believer magazine as examples of journals that have successfully reconceptualized what it means to be connect with readers today.About My GuestTravis Kurowski is an associate professor of creative writing at York College. From Pennsylvania Heritage: "Anyone who has ever read about the Battle of Gettysburg or visited the historic American Civil War battlefield undoubtedly learned about the generals, the courageous soldiers who fought in the grisly three-day encounter, and the thousands that lost their lives on that hallowed ground in Adams County. The stories of the famous engagements that took place at Little Round Top, Devil's Den, and the George Rose Farm Wheatfield, as well as the climatic Pickett's Charge, are retold again and again. Not much has been written, however, about the ways in which the battle dramatically affected African Americans residing in and around Gettysburg at the time. In this border county just north of the Mason-Dixon Line, a hotbed of Underground Railroad activity existed, albeit covertly. During those three tumultuous days of bloody conflict in July 1863, many civilians assumed responsibility for taking care of the injured in makeshift hospitals and helping to bury the dead. Some carried food and supplies to the soldiers in the field, while others chronicled the aftermath of the catastrophic event through writings and photographs. For African Americans who lived near the battle, there was great danger in being seen. Many were fugitive slaves from Maryland and Virginia who fled to nearby communities or to the outskirts of Gettysburg for fear of being captured by Confederate soldiers and returned to slavery. Through their oral histories, descendants of African American families that once lived in Gettysburg suggest that their ancestors fled to Yellow Hill, a black settlement in nearby Menallen Township, situated a short distance from the main road that connects Gettysburg to the small communities of Biglerville and Bendersville. Historians believe Yellow Hill not only provided a safe haven during the battle, but also had played an integral part in the Underground Railroad before the outbreak of the war. In his 1992 book, A History of Adams County, Pennsylvania, 1700–1990, Robert L. Bloom, professor emeritus of history at Gettysburg College, wrote, “One such tradition is that fugitive slaves brought by the Underground Railroad founded the Yellow Hill settlement northwest of Biglerville. As a matter of fact, this black community dated back to the eighteenth century, although some of its original settlers may have been fugitive slaves...”   Local historian Deb McCauslin sits down with Matt to talk about the hidden history of Yellow Hill. Deb will also be one an upcoming episode of That's What She Said
