Doth Protest Too Much: A Protestant Historical-Theology Podcast

The NIV, the RSV, the KJV? The Women's Bible, the Student's Bible, the Athlete's Bible, the Construction Worker's Bible? There's all kinds of Bibles out there, and where to start?  Former guest of the pod the Rev. Jay Mills joins Andrew and James today. They each discuss the translations and editions of the Bible that they prefer, both for their own reading and for recommendation for others. Note* all the Bibles we are discussing are English language translations. Shownotes: -Jay discusses some of his qualms he has with the SBL Study Bible -Andrew referred to this graph that plots the different Bible translations in regard to what kind of translation. (And like James points out, the graph is not perfect) -Though Andrew overall likes the NRSV translation, here is a link that he referenced that explains some of its issues. Links for the recommended Bibles brought up on this episode (we encourage you to do your own searching of these two, as they can come in hardcover, leather bound, paperback, e-book, etc.): Evangelical Heritage Version (EHV) Holy Bible The Reader's Bible (in different translation & formats) New International Version (NIV) Study Bible (2011 edition) English Standard Version (ESV) Study Bible The Reformation Study Bible (in ESV) Life Application Bible (available in several translations, Andrew recommends NIV for this one) Bible commentary series mentioned: Tyndale Bible Commentaries New International Commentary series (New Testament) Through Old Testament Eyes series Brazos Theological Commentary series

Welcome to "The Bible in Today's World", the show that compares today's world with the Word of God. In general and specifically, are we following the Bible in our daily walks? Is society demanding that we follow the Word of God in all that we do? Does our Almighty Father look upon us and frequently say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" - or is He thinking of us as He thought/thinks of Sodom and Gomorrah? On today's show, we will explore "Christmas", Part 1". We will also play Part 2 of my interview with COACH JAY MILLS. JAY MILLS, a former long time college football coach, including 13 years as the head coach at Charleston Southern University, and now an ordained pastor at Pleasant Valley Community Church, will join us to discuss his career; his beliefs; his website, newsletter, and videos; and his latest release, "Game On! - A Coach's Game Plan for Discipleship". FROM HIS WEBSITE: During his collegiate coaching career, Mills was recognized as an innovator, motivator, and team builder, helping both individuals and programs alike to reach their full potential. It was during the decade he served as the Head Football Coach at one faith-based institution that he first fully integrated biblical principles to create a whole person development model. This unique leadership strategy promoted the spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional development in those he led. As Mills would state, “Success in the core components of a person's life transfers into success, not just on the playing field, but personally and professionally as well. If the process is right, the results will take care of themselves.” His hypothesis would be correct. As a Head Football Coach, Mills led Charleston Southern University to its first ever winning season, conference championship, national ranking, and the second-longest winning streak in the nation. Before retiring in 2013, Mills would receive coach-of-the-year accolades and, for his accomplishments on and off the field, he was presented the prestigious Mike Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award. To Mills, it was not about simply developing young men, but training aspiring coaches as well. It was his desire that they all might use their platforms to advance the kingdom by using their influence to multiply disciples. His former student athletes and assistant coaches now serve in every strata in the coaching profession (including the NFL). They are also leaders in other professions, and pillars in their families, communities, and churches. Following a successful 30-year-career coaching college football, which included coaching one Heisman Trophy winner and stints at such well-known institutions as the University of Notre Dame and Harvard University, Mills embraced a calling to full-time ministry. Now as an ordained pastor at Pleasant Valley Community Church, he continues to employ the same coaching principles in this new venue. And he assists others in doing the same. In his writing and through his speaking engagements, Mills shares a skill set that will transfer into practical application for his audience's personal development and professional growth. coachjaymills.com/index.html

The Rev. Jay Mills, retired Episcopal priest out of North Carolina, joins Andrew and James today to discuss a recent article he wrote titled "There and Back Again: Historical-Critical Skepticism and Renewed Faith" that was published in the Living Church. In the article, Jay shared about his growing up in the Episcopal Church, coming of age in the late 1960's and leaving the the church, his return to faith, his time in the early 1970's Jesus Movement, his years as a theology student and seminarian where encountered the historical-critical method of teaching the Bible, how due to this he became skeptical of the historicity of events as described in the Bible (especially the Old Testament), and his eventual return to the belief of the Bible as authoritative and reliable. In this episode Gordon talks with The Rev. Jay Mills about his life journey of transformation and how he has changed his mind and values over the years. Jay shares how his life changed through his involvement in a 12-step program and his reconciliation with his past.  Gordon has known Jay for close to 20 years. Jay was originally one of Gordon's priests. Gordon is currently a clergy person in the Episcopal church and Jay is retired. As Jay tells his story you will find his life is an example of kindness and compassion.  Read more... The Rev. Jay Mills was raised in a middle-class home with parents that were reasonably good parents. And I ended up getting sexually assaulted when I was 12 years old, and my life very quickly unraveled. Jay started doing drugs and alcohol heavily. He ended up being addicted very young. He was also a really angry kid with a lot of violence. He lived that way until he was about 21, where he went through a conversion through the ministries of Campus Crusade for Christ. While he does not agree with their theology now, he says “I owe them my life cause as I've often said, if I waited for the Episcopal Church to evangelize me, I've died in a drug house. He was a camp counselor not long after that. He had an experience that where he oversaw several kids. They were in the back of his car, and they flipped off a local guy. And the guy followed him into Burger King. He wanted to fight. “I just looked at him and I said, “I can fight you. I'm a Christian.” Jay says at that moment he understood exactly what Jesus was talking about. Bless your enemies. Jesus was calling me to be a person of peace. Former division one football coach and now executive pastor, Jay Mills explains. He will help us understand that God is in complete control and desires to use our life experiences to help us grow and to help others see Christ.  Guest Bio: During his collegiate coaching career, Mills was recognized as an innovator, motivator, and team builder. As Mills would state, “Success in the core components of a person's life transfers into success, not just on the playing field, but personally and professionally as well.” His hypothesis would be correct. As a head football coach, Jay led Charleston Southern to its first-ever winning season, conference championship, and national ranking. He retired in 2013 after coaching stops that also included Notre Dame, Harvard, and Boise State. Jay embraced a calling to full-time ministry and continues to employ the same coaching principles in this new venue. Most recently he was named the Executive Pastor of Pleasant Valley Community Church in Owensboro, Kentucky. Jay Mills stopped by this work day evening to discuss a lot of unimportant shit which unfortunately for me, didn't include farts at all. But did include, Game of Thrones, Luka Doncic, Chris Pratt, and a point about my dopey view on relationship stuff that I never make because I started talking about the Juul which led to Jewel the singer I think. Could be wrong

An old friend of mine, Jay Mills stopped by for a Wednesday evening chat. I asked him a lot of of questions which led to a lot of discussion about various sounds that bodies make, our feelings about sports a little too much maybe, and my unfortunate mishandling of N.W.A. lyrics for several years.
