Can demonic possession be blamed for murder, or is it just the ultimate excuse for the inexcusable?Darkness Syndicate members get the ad-free version of #WeirdDarkness: https://weirddarkness.com/syndicateIN THIS EPISODE: From serial killers to seemingly ordinary individuals, a chilling phenomenon emerges as criminals claim demonic possession drove them to commit unspeakable acts. These disturbing cases, spanning decades and continents, blur the lines between evil and the supernatural, leaving us questioning the true nature of their heinous crimes. From the infamous Son of Sam to a father who claimed demonic voices compelled him to murder his own child, we'll explore some of these cases and let you decide if the devil made them do it. (Demonic Crimes) *** The Rose family lived comfortably in the picturesque Pleasant Valley in the late 1800s. However, oldest daughter Ceely's unrequited love for a neighbor boy led to a series of chilling events. Her obsession turned deadly, leading not only to death, but to a ghostly presence as well. (Love, Poison, and Ghosts – The Case of Ceely Rose) *** In the wild era of the 1920s and 1930s, organized crime flourished in the United States, with hitmen like the mysterious "Buster from Chicago" making a name for themselves. Known for his ruthless efficiency and chilling calm, Buster was responsible for many high-profile mob hits during the violent Castellammarese War. But who was Buster? (The Enigmatic Hitman, Buster From Chicago) *** In July 1993, 26-year-old Kristin Ann set out for her morning jog, but her run ended in a horrifying, fatal attack. The shocking crime has left her grieving family and community outraged and seeking justice. (The Murder of Kristin Ann) *** Imagine falling asleep on your usual train ride home, only to wake up at a mysterious, strikingly-white colored station with no way to leave. You encounter a strange child-like figure who warns you that this place is "one step before death." This is the eerie reality of Hitsuka Station, a ghostly train stop in Japan that traps unsuspecting passengers. Paul Arnold's interest in farming started in his 20s as an experiment in his father's backyard. "In 1986 when I decided to farm, I farmed in [my dad's] backyard to see if I really liked it," said Paul in a 2013 farm tour. "I worked for another farmer for one summer. And then started looking for land and found the land that we're going to walk to. And that was in 1988. We bought it. It was just a cornfield and some hayland." Paul and his wife Sandy have been running Pleasant Valley Farm since the early 1990s. It is located near the village of Argyle, New York, about a one-hour drive north of the state capital, Albany. Since then, the Arnolds have mentored a number of others interested in farming and continue to farm themselves growing "a range of over 40 types of vegetables and fruits year-round," according to their website. In Episode 29 of Station to Station with Joe Pavia, Exploring Pleasant Valley Farm & Echo Creek Farm in New York State, the Arnolds and one of the people they mentored, Michael Palulis will share their agricultural journey.

Housing Authority Has New Leadership

HC Audio Stories

Beacon agency helps lower-income residents Veronica Schetter, who started two months ago as executive director of the Beacon Housing Authority, says she's focused on hearing from as many voices as possible while helping people navigate an increasingly complex housing marketplace. Schetter is in a new position after taking over for Roland Traudt, who retired in August after 16 years with the agency, but the surroundings are familiar. She has been with the Housing Authority for 27 years, "quietly working behind the scenes." It's the only job she's ever had. "I hope to learn what misconceptions may be out there," Schetter said. "I plan to open my door to the folks who participate in our programs, to hear about any barriers they're experiencing." Schetter grew up in Glenham, the hamlet that borders Beacon's east side, and graduated from Beacon High School. She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from SUNY New Paltz. The Housing Authority was created in 1964 and manages Forrestal Heights, a 175-unit complex adjacent to South Avenue Park, and Hamilton Fish Plaza, which has 70 apartments on Eliza Street. In addition, it provides rental assistance vouchers to more than 300 families throughout its jurisdiction, which is Beacon, the Town and Village of Fishkill, the Town of Wappinger and the Village of Wappingers Falls. In 2021 the agency became part of the federal Housing Choice Voucher program, which Schetter said offers more reliable funding than the Public Housing program it had been under. Despite its name, the Beacon Housing Authority is not a city agency and receives no funding from Beacon or New York State, although five of the seven members of its board of directors are appointed by the mayor. During her quarter-century at the Housing Authority, "there has always been a demand" for affordable housing, Schetter said, "but it seems to be increasing." Waiting lists for the agency's housing options are closed, although they open from time to time (as recently as this past summer). A message is posted at beaconhousingauthority.org when that happens. Voucher Enforcement In August, the state Division of Human Rights sued an Albany company that manages 38 apartment complexes in four states, including two in Dutchess County, for allegedly refusing to accept rental vouchers and for requiring tenants to have a minimum income, which is illegal. In 2019 New York State made it illegal to discriminate against tenants based on any "lawful source of income," including vouchers. The lawsuit against Dawn Home Management focuses on seven properties in New York, including Chelsea Ridge Apartments in Wappingers Falls and Village Park Apartments in Pleasant Valley. The state alleges that the company refused to rent apartments to tenants with subsidies from the Housing Choice Voucher program and another program for people living with HIV and AIDS. The lawsuit was filed in Bronx County after a complaint from the nonprofit Westchester Residential Opportunities. The organization uses "testers" who pose as renters to document housing discrimination. The state is seeking financial damages, up to $100,000 in fines, monitoring and fair-housing training for Dawn Home employees. Schetter plans to hold an informational meeting for landlords to learn about the Housing Choice Voucher program. Any landlord can participate if an apartment is market-priced and passes an inspection. The tenant pays part of the rent based on their income and BHA covers the rest. The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development sets income limits annually for the program. To be eligible, a family must be at least "very low income," according to the federal agency, and at least 75 percent of families admitted through the Beacon Housing Authority must be "extremely low income," which in Dutchess County in 2024 is a family of four with a household income of $34,450 or less. There was talk last year of adding 10 apartments at Forrestal Heights, but BHA's board has paused...

IN THIS EPISODE: From serial killers to seemingly ordinary individuals, a chilling phenomenon emerges as criminals claim demonic possession drove them to commit unspeakable acts. Oddly, the best descriptions of the central event comes from a preliminary hearing for one of the accused. By the time the incident got to an actual trial, the newspapers seemed to have lost interest. Good story though, with good reliable tropes, including one of my favorites, what I like to call “courtroom shenanigans.”Culled from the historic pages of the Arizona Republic, the Arizona Weekly Star, and other newspapers of the era.Ad-Free EditionBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/true-crime-historian--2909311/support.

Bryan Kohberger, was allegedly a quiet loner with control and OCD fixations, and unresolved anger issues who struggled to make and maintain relationships with women and people. And now, he's being charged with first-degree murder of four Idaho college students.  According to reports, the individual suspected of murdering four students at the University of Idaho maintained a low profile in the apartment complex where he lived near Washington State University. As a result, some of his neighbors were unaware that the alleged murderer lived nearby. According to a statement released by the school, Bryan Kohberger, 28, who was charged with four counts of first-degree murder, went back to college after the killings and completed his first semester as a doctoral student studying criminal justice. Kohberger is facing four counts of first-degree murder. Justin Williams went on to say to FOX news that he rarely saw the person who is suspected of killing Kohberger. "That was the only time I saw him, he went to check his mail. "Other than that, I've only seen him like twice in my entire time here, and I've lived here since July 2021," Williams said, adding that he observed "nothing remarkable" in Kohberger's conduct. Williams has lived here since 2021. Shawn Domgaard, a PhD student at Washington State University who is 36 years old, stated that the news of the arrest just a few feet from his house is "difficult to accept." Fox News quoted a man from Utah who is a native of the state and a father of three young children as saying, "It's just so, like I said, a high contrast to what we're used to. Prosecutor Thompson told reporters at a press conference on Friday that additional information on the murders and the investigation that led to Kohberger's arrest will remain sealed in a probable cause affidavit until he is extradited back to Idaho. The reason for this is that Idaho state law requires the information to be kept confidential. In Monroe County, Pennsylvania, Kohberger is being held without the possibility of bond. On January 3, he will appear before an extradition hearing. According to one of the suspect's old friends, the criminology PhD student suspected of murdering four classmates at the University of Idaho changed into an aggressive and violent bully toward the end of high school. Nick Mcloughlin, from Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania, told the Daily Beast that he was shocked to find that his high school friend Bryan Christopher Kohberger was arrested on Friday in relation to the horrible slayings that took place in November. According to Mcloughlin, the two remained close throughout their adolescent years as pals. They spent half of their days at Pleasant Valley High School and the other half attending the technical school in Monroe County for classes on how to operate with heating and air conditioning systems. However, the relationship came to an end after Mcloughlin stated that Kohberger went through a change in personality within the course of one summer. According to one of Kohberger's former friends, he also started taking boxing lessons and could not wait to put his newly acquired talents to use. "He was constantly looking for a battle with somebody, and he bullied other individuals. "We started isolating him from our buddy circle because he was 100 totally a different person," Mcloughlin said, adding that the change in personality came as a complete shock to the pals and remained a mystery to them. According to The Daily Beast, Kohberger attended Northampton Community College after graduating from Pleasant Valley High School. In 2018, he received a degree in psychology from Northampton Community College. Kohberger maintained his position as a school security officer in the Pleasant Valley School District for a number of years until resigning from his employment there a year ago. After that, in 2022, he attended DeSales University and earned a master of arts degree in criminal justice there. When Kohberger was still a student at the institution, he made a post on Reddit seeking participation from former inmates in a research survey he was conducting on "how emotions and psychological traits influence decision-making when committing a crime." In the survey, he asked the criminals about the manner in which the criminals approached their victims and whether or not they had planned the crime in advance. According to a relative, the suspect in the stabbing deaths of four University of Idaho students disturbed his family with his strange eating habits. The victims were killed when he stabbed them. An aunt of Bryan Kohberger who is no longer related to him told The Post in an exclusive interview on Friday afternoon that her nephew's food restrictions were "very, very unusual." "It was above and above being vegan," said the aunt, who declined to be identified but said she was previously married into the family and had been brought into the vegan lifestyle by her husband. Because he would not consume anything previously used to prepare meat, his aunt and uncle were forced to purchase brand new cookware. He gave off the impression of having obsessive-compulsive disorder." During a news conference held on Friday afternoon, the Chief of Police for the city of Moscow stated that detectives are still hunting for the knife that was used in the killing of four students from the University of Idaho in November. According to the records, Kohberger was arraigned in Pennsylvania on Friday morning, and he is still being held without bond in anticipation of his extradition hearing on January 3. The suspect has the choice to renounce their extradition rights and return voluntarily to the state of Idaho. But if he decides not to, the Moscow police will have to start the process of extradition through the governor's office, which Fry said may take some time. Prosecutors have stated that their work is not even close to being finished despite the fact that a suspect has been charged. “This is not the end of this investigation. In fact, this is a new beginning,” Thompson said Friday night. The tranquility of Ohio's Pleasant Valley was forever scarred in June of 1896 when tragedy struck the Rose family. Twenty-three-year-old Ceely Rose was infatuated with neighbor boy Guy Berry. When he did not reciprocate her feelings, her family ordered her to stop following him, and she in turn used rat poison to murder them. A trial would follow, with much of the focus on her sanity and mental capacity. My guest is Mark Sebastian Jordan, author of "The Ceely Rose Murders at Malabar Farm".
