America's shortage of skilled construction workers isn't just an industry issue; it's a problem for communities nationwide. Today's guest, Building Talent Foundation CEO Branka Minic, tells host Jason Altmire that without enough framers, roofers, electricians, and other tradespeople, the entire housing market and economy feel the strain. And with 40% of the industry expected to retire by 2031, solutions are needed fast.Minic says her organization is tackling this challenge head on, offering career coaching to more than 200,000 young people and helping 5,000 disadvantaged workers start new careers. She explains why rebuilding America's skilled trades pipeline means healthier, safer, and more prosperous communities — and why investing in people is the key to rebuilding the nation's future. To learn more about Career Education Colleges & Universities, visit our website.

Sean's journey will inspire anyone feeling trapped in their career. After years in construction, Sean found himself drained by his blue-collar job despite doing everything he was "supposed to" do – putting on boots each morning and providing for his family. A chance encounter with John Ratey's book "Spark" ignited something inside him, beginning a transformation that would completely reshape his life. The path wasn't straightforward. Sean candidly shares his frustrations with traditional fitness certification, describing moments of heart-pounding anxiety when confronted with textbooks filled with jargon he couldn't understand. But everything changed when he discovered a practical approach to training that focused on real-world skills rather than abstract concepts. This breakthrough gave him the confidence to approach gym owners and stand out in an industry where 90% of new trainers fail within their first year. Now earning more than his construction salary while experiencing unprecedented freedom and fulfillment, Sean finds his greatest rewards in his clients' victories – from the former hockey player who can finally fit into his college jacket again to the budget-conscious client proudly purchasing her first dumbbell. More importantly, his career change has given him precious mornings with his five-year-old son, moments he previously sacrificed to his demanding job.For anyone contemplating a career change, especially those in their 40s or 50s who think it might be too late, Sean offers powerful advice: "We're here one time on this beautiful earth. The fruits we produce in life aren't for us, they're for others. Give your gift to others." The Independent Journalist Covering Immigration Raids In Her Own Community Earlier this summer, 17-year-old Kevin Robles was in his friend's car driving through their neighborhood in Oceanside when he noticed vehicles with tinted windows and nearby, masked men taking someone out of a red car. He started live streaming on Instagram and it went viral. But then a little over a week later agents with Homeland Security Investigations showed up at his family's home, smashing windows and tossing flash grenades, taking both of his parents into custody. Aisha Wallace Palomares was one of the first journalists to talk to Kevin Robles about what happened. She is an independent reporter who's covering ICE Raids in her hometown of Escondido, as well as other places around San Diego. One of them is a journalist who fled Nicaragua and ended up in the Bay Area. KQED's Immigration Editor Tyche Hendricks brings us her story. Legal Immigrants Face Deportation After Decades In the US A federal program called Temporary Protected Status allows the US to offer residency to immigrants whose home countries have been devastated by natural disasters or war. But for tens of thousands of immigrants, “temporary” has lasted for decades. Now, the Trump administration is moving to end much of the program and that could uproot as many as one million people. Reporter Benjamin Gottlieb spoke to several people in Los Angeles who now find themselves in this immigration limbo. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

In many ways, we are defined by the work we do. Lawyer, Nurse, Teacher, Construction Worker. We have perceptions and expectations of all of them. Its a top question asked when meeting a new person. And like it or not, everyone has an opinion as soon as you admit your profession. But is that all there is? Are we solely defined by our professional work? What if we are in job that doesn't align with our heart at all? In the Church, we like to talk about “Vocation” as our calling to the world.
