At the ERLC, our goal is to serve our Southern Baptist churches in the public square. As you have heard throughout this series about our work in Washington D.C., having a presence and a voice in our nation's capital allows us to speak up, for, and from our Southern Baptist churches before various audiences. In previous episodes, we have broken down how that work covers all three branches of government and some of the specific ways we seek to engage those arenas. Today, our focus turns to the work of the ERLC's Research team and how they support and undergird the work of the ERLC Policy team. Joining us is Rashan Frost. RaShan serves as the ERLC director of research and senior fellow focused on issues of human dignity. He is the teaching pastor of Centerpoint Church in North Charleston, South Carolina, and is an adjunct professor of Christian Studies at Charleston Southern University. Frost earned his doctor of philosophy in theology with a concentration in public theology at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary. He is active in denominational leadership, serving with the Charleston Baptist Association of the South Carolina Baptist Convention.

Dr. Scott Yarbrough, PhD is a professor of English at Charleston Southern University, as well as the host of two literary podcasts, Reading McCarthy & Great American Novel out of Charleston, South Carolina. This episode is dedicated to the hunting novella, The Bear by America's 20th-century literary master, William Faulkner. After a reading, we begin with Faulkner's biography as Scott describes the major themes within his writing: the southern gothic push back to the over-romanticization of the old south; race & the aftermath of slavery; time & history; and the tension between loving & hating where one comes from. Then we turn to a discussion, synopsis & analysis of The Bear, Faulkner's coming-of-age novella about a boy's hunting camp as they search for a dog powerful enough to bay the mythic bear, Old Ben, that haunts a 100-square miles of Mississippi wilderness that soon will vanish under the logger's ax. Woven throughout are conversations about: the evolution of language; writers that hunt; "toxic masculinity;" bear symbolism; the wildness within; Scott's rural upbringing; city-dwellers appreciating southern literature; and last but not least, William Faulkner's feist dogs!Reading from Big Woods: The Hunting Stories by William Faulkner. Check out Scott's podcasts, Reading McCarthy and Great American Novel Podcast.Support Our Numinous Nature on Patreon.Follow Our Numinous Nature & my naturalist illustrations on InstagramCheck out my shop of shirts, prints, and books featuring my artContact: herbaceoushuman@gmail.com

Witness Wednesday #122 More PopWe Stories (Anxiety/Depression)Today's witnesses are from Matthew West's website called popwe.org. If you don't know who Matthew West is, he is a singer, songwriter, and storyteller. This website is for the non-profit that he has with his father, a pastor. Matthew and his father encourage people to share their stories. They have various categories of stories. Today, I chose three testimonies from the Anxiety/Depression Category. I know so many people who are struggling with anxiety and depression right now. Suicide seems like it is increasing as well. Often, we can hear our own story in someone else's story. When we listen to others tell their story, it helps us see that we are not alone. When we hear how God worked in their situation, it gives us hope that He will work in ours, too! I pray when you hear these testimonies, you get the faith and hope to believe that miracles can happen in your situation also. I pray you know that God is there with you, and if you invite Him into your anxiety and depression, He can help.Jenna: I grew up in a Christian family. We went to church every Sunday and Wednesday and were a part of almost everything; Awana, Elevate teen group, and even school there. Two and a half years ago, I lost someone who I was close to because she felt the need to commit suicide. I was heartbroken and I felt like I lost everything. 2022 was a challenging year for me. I had daily panic attacks and felt like I was worthless. My eating habits went down significantly, and I was stressed all the time. As exams neared, I was super stressed and ended up passing out.Months passed and I still felt worthless. I planned to commit suicide when I got a text from a friend, and it was like a text from God. She said she heard I was going to camp and hoped to see me there. I thought if I waited til after camp, and then committed suicide it would be okay. So I went to camp and it changed my life. I met so many new people and was able to share my hurt with my church and they told me that I was not alone. Camp was my blue couch moment as I sat there in service Thursday night, I realized that I needed God in my life more than ever. I had already been saved, but I realized I hadn't been living like Christ wanted me to.Around late February early March, my friend introduced me to someone…we immediately hit it off and became great friends. A month or two later, it was revealed that he liked me. We started dating in June and have been together ever since. I tell you that little story because sometimes when you need it most, God has someone in mind who will help you grow in faith and support you through it all. They can also help you overcome the hardships in your life.I still deal with anxiety and eating habits, but they have gotten so much better since camp and I am so thankful for all that my church has done for me. Also, I have my three closest friends with me right by my side and the Lord has blessed me with an amazing boyfriend who I love and who has helped me through a lot.GOD'S NOT DONE WITH YOU OR YOUR STORY! HE STILL CARES A LOT AND WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU. YOU HAVE A PURPOSE – TURN TO GOD TO FIND THAT PURPOSE AND YOU WILL BE FOUND.Brianna: From the age of 10, I was stuck with the label “child prodigy,” winning piano competitions, featured in local newspapers, and recognized as a passionate, fiery recitalist. Yet, even as a youth, I was severely depressed. I was insecure, seeking affection, and perpetually in pursuit of attaining “good enough.” Right before my 16th birthday, my world suddenly turned upside down. In an unexpected turn of events, I faced a close encounter with death, had my innocence taken, and watched helplessly as my mother's health began to rapidly fail. Too ashamed to ask for help and blaming myself for the situation, I despairingly turned to self-harm, eating disorders, and eventually, planned my own suicide. One day, I heard the song ‘Broken Pieces', and I found something onto which I could cling to – Truth, even when I could not feel it and it failed to make sense.Through involvement with an organization called Csehy Summer School of Music, I came to personally know Christ. For the first time in my life, I experienced peace, hope, and true joy. Dedicating my life to God, I went back home with a different perspective. My life was still intense – balancing high school and conservatory studies, living between home and the hospital, while being a full-time caretaker for my undiagnosed mother. By the grace of God, I managed to graduate as Salutatorian and get accepted into music school. However, shortly before college began, my mother passed away.I started my B.A. in piano at Charleston Southern University, using every spare moment to pour my heart out into the keys as a wordless prayer. Yet, a lingering pain in my right hand soon became constant. A few months after my mother's funeral, I was diagnosed with severe damage in my right hand, incited by the physical strains from being a caretaker. The only option left was surgery, followed by excruciating therapy, without guarantee of returning to the keys. My doctor strongly advised me to quit and choose a different career path. But I fought back.Over the next several years, I fought through recovery – from both surgical and emotional scars. I realized that though I had given my life to Christ, I hadn't fully “surrendered” it. In those precious years of undergrad, I experienced the freedom found in surrendering to the grace of God, the beauty of vulnerability, and the power of learning to fly again. Then, nearly four years to the day the doctor said it was over, I found myself sitting onstage, performing at Carnegie Hall. When I turned to the audience to see a standing ovation, I burst into tears, because I remembered the words, “With You I can attack a barrier, and with my God I can leap over a wall.”-Psalm 18:29Today, despite the formalities infused in classical music, I get to use the concert stage as a platform to share my story and encourage others to seek help and experience the peace of God. I perform and travel internationally as a soloist and chamber musician, frequently being sought after to premiere avant-garde piano works, and I am actively involved in youth and collegiate ministry. Although healing is an ongoing process, by the hand of God's work in my life, the label of “Victim” has been replaced with “Victorious,” “Hopeless” has been covered by “Confidence,” and what was “Impossible” is now a living, breathing, walking “Miracle.”Bubby: Hey, I just wanted to thank Matthew for his book, “Hello My Name Is” and for all he does for us! I've met him a handful of times and he is such an awesome child of God. On page 58, I believe, he talks about the story of the 11-year-old who asked for the hug and shared about his anxiety. It took me back to my childhood. I didn't come to faith until I was 14. A man!! (Lol. I thought…) But I can remember being 5-10 and suffering through anxiety and panic issues every night and throughout the day. I won't go into it, but it was messed up. Family life was messed up. When I read how this little boy thinking of God holding him when listening to Matt's song, it brought tears to my eyes. I'm 58 and still have memories of my childhood that can hurt if I dwell in them, but I very seldom do…only when things like reading or seeing or hearing someone else's experiences. I looked back at how God was there for me all along even though I was not His child yet. His love is so totally encompassing!! It fills every void in my soul. At 12 I was prescribed some medicine that helped, but it was addictive, and when my mom took me off them abruptly, I turned to drinking and drugging heavier then I had already started a year or so earlier. It was a long road I went through, but thank God, I will have 19 years of sobriety this month. My name is “Saved,” in so many ways.Thank you all for sharing your stories with the world. It can be hard to be vulnerable and talk about the hard things we have gone through.Yet when you are brave and do it even when its hard then we help others who are suffering know that it is ok for them to talk about it too! Welcome to "The Bible in Today's World", the show that compares today's world with the Word of God. In general and specifically, are we following the Bible in our daily walks? Is society demanding that we follow the Word of God in all that we do? Does our Almighty Father look upon us and frequently say, "Well done, good and faithful servant!" - or is He thinking of us as He thought/thinks of Sodom and Gomorrah? On today's show, we will explore "Christmas", Part 1". We will also play Part 2 of my interview with COACH JAY MILLS. JAY MILLS, a former long time college football coach, including 13 years as the head coach at Charleston Southern University, and now an ordained pastor at Pleasant Valley Community Church, will join us to discuss his career; his beliefs; his website, newsletter, and videos; and his latest release, "Game On! - A Coach's Game Plan for Discipleship". FROM HIS WEBSITE: During his collegiate coaching career, Mills was recognized as an innovator, motivator, and team builder, helping both individuals and programs alike to reach their full potential. It was during the decade he served as the Head Football Coach at one faith-based institution that he first fully integrated biblical principles to create a whole person development model. This unique leadership strategy promoted the spiritual, physical, mental, and emotional development in those he led. As Mills would state, “Success in the core components of a person's life transfers into success, not just on the playing field, but personally and professionally as well. If the process is right, the results will take care of themselves.” His hypothesis would be correct. As a Head Football Coach, Mills led Charleston Southern University to its first ever winning season, conference championship, national ranking, and the second-longest winning streak in the nation. Before retiring in 2013, Mills would receive coach-of-the-year accolades and, for his accomplishments on and off the field, he was presented the prestigious Mike Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award. To Mills, it was not about simply developing young men, but training aspiring coaches as well. It was his desire that they all might use their platforms to advance the kingdom by using their influence to multiply disciples. His former student athletes and assistant coaches now serve in every strata in the coaching profession (including the NFL). They are also leaders in other professions, and pillars in their families, communities, and churches. Following a successful 30-year-career coaching college football, which included coaching one Heisman Trophy winner and stints at such well-known institutions as the University of Notre Dame and Harvard University, Mills embraced a calling to full-time ministry. Now as an ordained pastor at Pleasant Valley Community Church, he continues to employ the same coaching principles in this new venue. And he assists others in doing the same. In his writing and through his speaking engagements, Mills shares a skill set that will transfer into practical application for his audience's personal development and professional growth. coachjaymills.com/index.html

My guests this week are Dr. Ed Gravely and Dr. Pete Link Jr. Ed serves as Professor of Christian Studies at Charleston Southern University and occupies the Ott Chair of Theology there. He has been teaching koine Greek and New Testament at the university and graduate level since 2002, and the focus of his research and writing is in the field of Textual Criticism. Ed serves as an elder at his church in the Charleston area. He is married and has two children. Pete serves as an Associate Professor of Christian Studies at Charleston Southern University. He teaches biblical Hebrew, Old Testament, and hermeneutics with a focus on the Torah. Dr. Link earned his PhD from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in 2012, and he currently serves as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Southeast Region of the Evangelical Theological Society. In addition to his academic work, Pete also serves as a Groups Pastor at Crossroads Community Church in Summerville, S.C. God has blessed him and his wife, Becky, with five wonderful children. 3:30 – Pete 101 His background is in radio, TV and film. He was a failed screenwriter. Pete gave his life to the Lord at age 31. 5:30 – Ed 101 He is married with a 16-year-old son and 18-year-old daughter. One of the best things about living in Charleston is putting Christmas lights in palm trees. 7:10 – Bible 101 Pete and Ed wrote the book, “Bible 101,” to be a comprehensive, easy-to-understand guide to the ins and outs of the Old and New Testaments. They spent about 6 to 8 weeks writing the first draft of the book. They think Biblical illiteracy is a problem. 16:00 – New and Old Testaments The amount of Old Testament that is assumed by the New Testament writers is substantial. Paul is sort of the spark notes for the Old Testament. 27:41 – What order to teach the Old Testament? They wondered what order would be best to teach the Old Testament. While reading the Bible, you can begin to see the patterns of God's mercy. 36:36 – How should I live in this world? Think about the things you need to hold onto and the things you need to let go of, because you are passing through this world. 42:54 – Asking God questions God is not afraid of our questions. 44:20 – What to say to nonbelievers? Some people have very particular and meticulous questions, and you can work to answer those. Does the person you're talking to consider the Bible to be innocent until proven guilty or guilty until proven innocent? 57:26 – Get to know you FEATURED QUOTES We sent the book to friends, asking, “Does this make sense to you?” – Pete This book sort of fell out of the sky into our laps. – Pete We certainly believe that Biblical illiteracy is especially bad right now. – Pete I can remember how intimidating the concept of the scriptures were. – Pete The amount of Old Testament that is assumed by the New Testament writers is substantial. – Ed I often tell my students that in many ways Paul is sort of the spark notes for the Old Testament. – Ed https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Bible-101/Edward-D-Gravely/Adams-101/9781507219805

Biography- As President of Liberty University, Dr. Costin comes to the university's leadership as a continuation of a lifetime dedicated to service. Most recently, Dr. Costin has served as president of Charleston Southern University (CSU). His celebrated tenure has been marked by academic and athletic achievement. Under his leadership, the university set fundraising records, significantly improved its overall rankings, and dramatically exceeded freshmen enrollment goals. On the heels of the best all-around year in CSU's athletic history, Dr. Costin now serves as president of the Big South Conference. His military decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, and the Bronze Star Medal. In addition to a bachelor's degree in operations research from The United States Air Force Academy, Dr. Costin holds five master's degrees, a Doctor of Ministry degree, and a Ph.D. in organizational leadership. He earned two of his five master's degrees from Liberty University early in his military career. Before retiring in 2013, Mills would receive coach-of-the-year accolades and, for his accomplishments on and off the field, he was presented the prestigious Mike Campbell Lifetime Achievement Award Support the showLeave a review https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/dorsey-ross-show/id1495921329 Check out my ministry website at https://www.dorseyrossministries.com Donate at https://www.buymeacoffee.com/dorseyross
