If you struggle and become desperate, you prevent your desired outcome. You suppress your ability to perform. In the moment of execution, you have to let go—detach from the outcome and stay fully present.Example 1:During an Olympic Women's Artistic Gymnastics final, the competition for gold was fierce. Three top gymnasts had already scored above 9.0. Then, a 15-year-old girl performed flawlessly and won. When asked how she handled the pressure, she replied, "Not at all—I just focused on how great I could perform." She felt no fear, no pressure—only the desire to showcase her skill.Example 2:Imagine speaking or performing in front of a huge audience. Do you panic? Or do you focus on serving them as best as you can? If it's the latter, fear vanishes. When you're obsessed with the outcome, your mind races: What if I fail? What if I'm not perfect? What will people think? You're trapped in the future, not the present. This: Suppresses your performance. Amplifies desperation. Drains your energy. An anxious mind can't be creative or adaptable. The path is the goal. Master your skill. Master your presence. Be in the moment.Final Example:I once needed an international yacht license, with a 70–80% failure rate. Everything went wrong: I was unprepared, entered the wrong room, and arrived 30 minutes late. Panic set in—I trembled, blanked for 15 minutes, and nearly gave up. Then I thought: "Even if I fail, I'll do my best."I answered every question calmly, finished 30 minutes early (the exam was designed for 4 hours!), and despite struggling in the practical test (I was used to heavy sailboats, not light motorboats in wind), I passed—ranking 3rd out of 200 candidates, while 80% failed.Moral: Don't fixate on the outcome. Just do your best.

Transgender women are no longer being allowed to compete in U.S. Olympic women's sports. Correspondent Gethin Coolbaugh reports.
In this week's episode, Robyn and James are joined by Connie Carpenter Phinney, who is 1984 became the first ever Olympic Women's Road Race gold medal winner.Connie charts her career from 14 year-old winter Olympic speed skater to champion road cyclist, a sporting career which saw her win multiple national titles and dominate races such as the Coors Classic.Married to fellow American cyclist Davis Phinney, mother to ex-pro Taylor Phinney and mother-in-law to reigning Tour de France Femmes champ, Kasia Niewiadoma (Taylor's wife), though Connie has long since retired she's still very close to cycling, and here contrasts her experiences competing in 1980s with life on two wheels now, from her near non-existent racing budget to building her own wheels, burning out after the Olympics and watching her son race, including witnessing the horror crash that nearly cost him his life.An irrepressible spirit, Connie has no sporting regrets, and today puts her energy into the charity she founded after husband Davis was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson's. The Davis Phinney Foundation aims to raise awareness, money, and crucially to provide support and resources to those living with, and caring for, people with Parkinson's. Welcome back to Brad's Olympic Track & Field wrap up! I hope you enjoyed the lengthy presentation summarizing the men's events, and now it's time for a show dedicated to the awesome performances of the females on the track and the field for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In the first show, I gave you a little bit of an overview about my fascination with Olympic Track & Field and I also mentioned something I talk about more in this episode, which is how great it is to see a sport where the males and females are equally represented in the categories of stardom and coverage—unlike some other sports that tend to exist in the shadow of the men's games (like basketball). They say good things come in threes. Maggie Steffens hopes they come in fours. Steffens is the team captain for the U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team. The team has won three straight Olympic gold medals. Winning a fourth would make history as no team, men's or women's, has won four straight gold medals. We caught up with Steffens and her team at a sold-out exhibition game at Long Beach City College. The crowd was packed with female teenage club players. "I was once that little girl on a pool deck looking up and seeing role models and saying, that's something I want to do," Steffens said. Steffens' team is a team is a mix of veterans and first-time Olympians. She leads with an Olympic mindset grounded in gratitude with an eye on mentorship for the next generation of players. Steffens says, "Going into this Olympics gratitude is one of my biggest things. How cool is it I get this opportunity and how can I make this torch a little brighter for the future of our sport?" Coach Adam Krikorian says his team tries not to focus exclusively on winning gold again. "The reality is this team has never won a gold medal. And we have people that have never been Olympians before. So this is their first experience," Krikorian says. Bottom line: leadership and experience will matter greatly this summer in Paris. On this Dying to Ask: Why leading with gratitude works How a spirit of gratitude fosters mentorship Advice on how to get different generations to work together toward a goal

“It's through storytelling that I keep myself going… I've been blessed to be able to stick with it all these years. I had a partial knee replacement in the middle of COVID and we waited until I found a surgeon who told me that I'd run again… When you set your sights on something, it's hard to let go. I always try to finish what I start. I was on that six-star journey and I wanted to complete it.” Joan Benoit Samuelson is a legend in our sport. The first-ever Olympic women's marathon champion, two-time Boston Marathon champion (1979 & 1983), 1985 Chicago Marathon champion and former American record holder is still running and inspiring at 66 years old. In March, she finally received her Abbott World Marathon Major six star medal after completing the Tokyo Marathon in 3:38:37. Before the pandemic, Benoit Samuelson was looking to extend her sub-three hour marathon streak across six decades. She ran 3:02:21 at the 2019 Berlin Marathon and then underwent a partial right knee replacement surgery in 2020. Two years ago, she ran 3:20:20 at the London Marathon and won her respective age group. I had the pleasure of catching her for a bit while in Boston, where she was on-site as an ambassador for Abbott. In this conversation, we talk about how she continues to utilize running as storytelling, her mark on the sport, how she's inspired so many women and a little bit about what's next after completing all six World Marathon Majors. Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Host: Joan Benoit Samuelson | @joanbenoitsamuelson on Instagram Time stamps: 4:48 - How she's feeling after becoming a World Marathon Majors Six Star finisher. 6:02 - How she finds the motivation to continue training + how she goes about goal setting. 8:25 - The story she wants to begin writing for herself now that the Six Stars are accomplished. 10:10 - How she inspires others through sharing her story. 15:04 - Her relationship with other elite women marathoners. 16:44 - Her philosophy on running + what the sport means to her. 18:20 - Her relationship with the running community.
