In this week's episode, Robyn and James are joined by Connie Carpenter Phinney, who is 1984 became the first ever Olympic Women's Road Race gold medal winner.Connie charts her career from 14 year-old winter Olympic speed skater to champion road cyclist, a sporting career which saw her win multiple national titles and dominate races such as the Coors Classic.Married to fellow American cyclist Davis Phinney, mother to ex-pro Taylor Phinney and mother-in-law to reigning Tour de France Femmes champ, Kasia Niewiadoma (Taylor's wife), though Connie has long since retired she's still very close to cycling, and here contrasts her experiences competing in 1980s with life on two wheels now, from her near non-existent racing budget to building her own wheels, burning out after the Olympics and watching her son race, including witnessing the horror crash that nearly cost him his life.An irrepressible spirit, Connie has no sporting regrets, and today puts her energy into the charity she founded after husband Davis was diagnosed with young onset Parkinson's. The Davis Phinney Foundation aims to raise awareness, money, and crucially to provide support and resources to those living with, and caring for, people with Parkinson's. Hi everyone and hope you are enjoying the player episodes again, today I've got another great one with the super lovely Czech LET star & Olympian Sára Kouskova! The 2022 LETAS Order of Merit winner joined me to chat about her off season, what she's been improving on and how she's looking forward to Morocco this week! Kouskova is from Prague, which is of course the capital of Czechia. Sara would go to University of Texas at Austin representing Czechia 4 times at European Girls' Team Championship, 4 times at European Ladies' Team Championship, World Junior Girls Championship in 2017 & Espirito Santo Trophy participant in 2018 and would win 2021 Arizona Wildcat Invitational in college. In 2021 Sara would make history by becoming the first Czech player to win a LET Access Series event at Czech Ladies Open (as an Amateur too impressive!) In 2022 Sara would win 3 times on LET Access Series in June at Santander Golf Malaga beating Virginia Elena Carta by 1 shot at (-5) and twice in September at Elite Hotels Open beating Vanessa Knecht by 3 shots at (-12) & ASGI Lavaux Ladies Open in Switzerland winning by 4 to the talented Helen Briem. With 3 wins and a consistent season Sara would win the 2022 Order of Merit for LET Access Series therefore gaining a full your card on LET for 2023. On LET Sara admittedly at first she found it a struggle to get the consistency level right but would finish T5th at the notoriously difficult Hero Indian Women's Open at DLF helping her keep her status for 2024. It would a far more consistent season for Sara in 2024 with 4 Top 10s including 3rd at La Sella Open, 6th at Lalla Meryem Cup & 7th at Dutch Ladies Open which would help her to finish 19th overall in the LET Order of Merit standings. Sara is also an Olympian as she would also represent Czechia at Olympic Women's Golf at Le Golf National at 2024 Paris Olympics, Sara also talks about her Olympics experiences! In her time off Sara is an avid artist and loves to chat about environment sustainability! Thanks to Sara for a nice chat and all the best at Lalla Meryem Cup in Morocco this week on LET, hopefully a big 2025 for you! Guys would love it if you could at least keep the downloads coming for these episodes as a lot of work goes into making them happen! Please download on Podbean, Spotify, Apple Podcasts and all other Podcast providers! Enjoy!

Welcome back to Brad's Olympic Track & Field wrap up! I hope you enjoyed the lengthy presentation summarizing the men's events, and now it's time for a show dedicated to the awesome performances of the females on the track and the field for the Paris 2024 Olympics. In the first show, I gave you a little bit of an overview about my fascination with Olympic Track & Field and I also mentioned something I talk about more in this episode, which is how great it is to see a sport where the males and females are equally represented in the categories of stardom and coverage—unlike some other sports that tend to exist in the shadow of the men's games (like basketball). Natalia: For those like me building some stamina. Do we still get some gains if using pull buoys OR paddles while swimming longer than a hour? Not to avoid physical but mental fatigue. I like swimming but 2 hours in the pool gets tough/ boring. Or what's the alternative? If any. I'm interested to hear your thoughts on that. Thanks, coach! Do we still get some gains if using pull buoys OR paddles while swimming longer than a hour? Key context "building some stamina" confirmed that this is the real goal Key context "2 hours in the pool gets tough/boring" Key context "Not to avoid physical but mental fatigue" Let's work with the context statements first starting with 2 hour sessions leading to boredom and mental fatigue. I get it, at the end of an hour, I'm pretty spent mentally and swimming endless laps can get boring. I think the key is how do you make the time you have in the pool both productive and engaging/interesting. Let's face it, if you are training for an IM you are likely doing 4K+ y/m training sessions. These longer "endurance" sessions are geared toward building your "endurance". There is no shortcut, but there may be some things we can do to make limit those longer sessions and make them more engaging when you do. Start with fast before you go far. You don't have to do 4K sessions all through your IM training plan. Save those longer distance efforts until you are withing the last 2 months before your IM. When the longer sessions come, know you get 80% of the benefit in the last 20% from and endurance perspective, so look forward to the pushing those extra yards at that stage. In the mean time, reduce the time in the pool by getting faster. If you save 10 seconds/100 that's a 400 seconds or 6.5 minutes time savings over 4K. Dedicate time in each session to work on form and drills that reduce drag, resistance and misdirection. Second context statement around "building some stamina". I like to think of Stamina as a place between endurance and speed. If you have properly trained at the two extremes 1) endurance and 2) speed, "stamina" becomes the biproduct. The ability to go longer, faster. As you get closer to your race, you do more zone 3 "race specific" pacing. So back to the "do I get gains if using pull buoys or paddles while swimming longer than an hour?" Paddles are good for developing strength, which is also important for stamina. You can also use swim bands at home to work on high elbow catch and stroke finish with hand finishing at your thigh. That said, I recommend focusing on efficiency first. Work on drills that develop unconscious habits of good functional form. The best measure of efficiency is distance per stroke. The few strokes to cross a given distance the less drag and less power required to get through the water. You can develop more distance per stroke with efficiency and form than you can with a strong pull. Pull buoys are good for drills where you just want to focus on arm and breathing coordination drills and taking the kick out of the equation. Used specifically for that purpose, it's a good tool to have in your pack. Beyond that, it doesn't help you focus on your balance because it acts as a compensator for a lack of ability to control your body balance with kick and form. Used too often, or as a crutch, it can rob you of repetitions where you focus on improving your form and slow your development to being a faster swimmer over distance. They say good things come in threes. Maggie Steffens hopes they come in fours. Steffens is the team captain for the U.S. Olympic Women's Water Polo Team. The team has won three straight Olympic gold medals. Winning a fourth would make history as no team, men's or women's, has won four straight gold medals. We caught up with Steffens and her team at a sold-out exhibition game at Long Beach City College. The crowd was packed with female teenage club players. "I was once that little girl on a pool deck looking up and seeing role models and saying, that's something I want to do," Steffens said. Steffens' team is a team is a mix of veterans and first-time Olympians. She leads with an Olympic mindset grounded in gratitude with an eye on mentorship for the next generation of players. Steffens says, "Going into this Olympics gratitude is one of my biggest things. How cool is it I get this opportunity and how can I make this torch a little brighter for the future of our sport?" Coach Adam Krikorian says his team tries not to focus exclusively on winning gold again. "The reality is this team has never won a gold medal. And we have people that have never been Olympians before. So this is their first experience," Krikorian says. Bottom line: leadership and experience will matter greatly this summer in Paris. On this Dying to Ask: Why leading with gratitude works How a spirit of gratitude fosters mentorship Advice on how to get different generations to work together toward a goal

“It's through storytelling that I keep myself going… I've been blessed to be able to stick with it all these years. I had a partial knee replacement in the middle of COVID and we waited until I found a surgeon who told me that I'd run again… When you set your sights on something, it's hard to let go. I always try to finish what I start. I was on that six-star journey and I wanted to complete it.” Joan Benoit Samuelson is a legend in our sport. The first-ever Olympic women's marathon champion, two-time Boston Marathon champion (1979 & 1983), 1985 Chicago Marathon champion and former American record holder is still running and inspiring at 66 years old. In March, she finally received her Abbott World Marathon Major six star medal after completing the Tokyo Marathon in 3:38:37. Before the pandemic, Benoit Samuelson was looking to extend her sub-three hour marathon streak across six decades. She ran 3:02:21 at the 2019 Berlin Marathon and then underwent a partial right knee replacement surgery in 2020. Two years ago, she ran 3:20:20 at the London Marathon and won her respective age group. I had the pleasure of catching her for a bit while in Boston, where she was on-site as an ambassador for Abbott. In this conversation, we talk about how she continues to utilize running as storytelling, her mark on the sport, how she's inspired so many women and a little bit about what's next after completing all six World Marathon Majors. Host: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on Instagram Host: Joan Benoit Samuelson | @joanbenoitsamuelson on Instagram Time stamps: 4:48 - How she's feeling after becoming a World Marathon Majors Six Star finisher. 6:02 - How she finds the motivation to continue training + how she goes about goal setting. 8:25 - The story she wants to begin writing for herself now that the Six Stars are accomplished. 10:10 - How she inspires others through sharing her story. 15:04 - Her relationship with other elite women marathoners. 16:44 - Her philosophy on running + what the sport means to her. 18:20 - Her relationship with the running community.
