Two things we like in our sports at the Trans Sporter Room are beauty and speed, and in a perfect world our host Karleigh Webb always seeks BOTH! BEAUTY: Ed Fox and Phoebe Martin of the Union Omaha FC "Proud Owls" Last year Fox and Martin started the Proud Owls, the LGBTQ supporters group for the USL League One Union Omaha FC. They started the supporters' group to provide a safe space for LGBTQ and Ally fans of the 2021 USL League One champions. Last Week, as their state began hearings on anti-trans discrimination and protest were called, they went to the state capital to show support. They were their to give support and be there. To them it was an evolution of what they started their group. SPEED: Zach Herrin and Kevin Jennings Zach Herrin has been in pro motorsports since he was a 16-year-old on the pro motorcycling circuit, and had potential, but finding his truth as a gay man and his chosen profession was since as a bridge too far. Herrin left the racing saddle to attend to himself. Along the way, the only answers he could have? Yes, you are gay and yes, you are a racer! Herrin began his road back. Leading up to an opportunity to drive in an ARCA Menards Series car at Daytona this week thanks former driver and current ARCA Series team owner Andy Hillenburg For a sponsor Herrin turned to a group who doesn't like to lose. "Solidarity is about people, not principles. You can have the greatest principles in the world, but if you don't use them to help anybody they are completely worthless." As a baseball writer Sheryl Weikal has always put her pen in line with her principles. She not only spoke stats, but also spoke out on issues that matter and didn't shy away from social critique at the intersections of sport and society. She cut so close to the quick at times that one team said she wasn't welcome to attend a game at their park. Weikal approaches what she sees as her life's work with the same passion. In 2021, a rising junior collegiate swimmer made a decision: Team ahead of self for a chance to complete a collective goal For Yale University sprint specialist Iszac Henig, it means going fast alongside his mates on Yale's women's swim team. With the goal of bringing an Ivy League women's team title back to New Haven for the first time since 2017. It also meant putting a critical piece of his transition on hold. 2021-2022 was as successful in the pool for Henig as it was controversial for the sport. Among those he would swim against last season was certain senior at Penn named Lia Thomas. Yes. That Lia Thomas. Through the headline clickbait, Henig swam fast and had fun, even through a difficult season of having to leave a piece of himself on hold. He ended the year with his first individual Ivy League title and became one of only three transgender student-athletes in NCAA to earn Division I conference title, and only one of three to earn All-American honors. After last season, Henig made the next choice. His senior season, would fully be his. He became part of the men's team at Yale. It's been 9 months since Lia Thomas, then at the University of Pennsylvania, won an NCAA championship, but her name still causes reactions whenever the issue of trans people in sport is discussed. In this special year-end edition of the Trans Sporter Room, we look back at the timeline, the tales and how the twists and turns have affected the larger issues in sport and our society. It began as a play in an early season high school volleyball match in the small town of Highlands, North Carolina. A skilled girl for Highlands got a perfect set, laid down a hard spike, and the opposing player wasn't ready to handle it. The ball hit the girl in the face causing an injury the forced her to leave the match. Something that happens in the sport. A few weeks later, a school board meets on what happened in the game, and it lead to a decision for all the county high school to forfeit against Highlands. The official reason was "safety concerns". But underneath there was hearsay about the player who dropped that scoring hit. A noted right-wing bias website blared out that the student-athlete was a transgender girl, even though her identity was never revealed publicly. Once again, trans sport panic would strike. This time the in a small town in western North Carolina. Or would it? A journalist named Brittney Lofthouse, founder of a small local news blog, didn't take the school board or the clickbait sites at face value. She asked questions and dug in amid the hysteria of certain media which have never hid anti-trans sentiment. Her prime question was the school board kept the kids' identity out of this, why are you reporting hearsay? Karleigh Webb sat down with Lofthouse to look at what is actually known, what was speculation and how this could affect how recent stories have been covered, and how future stories like this may be. This week's Trans Sporter Room with Karleigh Webb features two mavericks who set their own mark. Skateboarder Leo Baker: Art Above All. Heading into 2020, Leo Baker was one of the top skateboarders in the world. A 6-time X Games medalist, Baker was selected to the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team for Tokyo. That was before the COVID crisis hit and postponed the games. But a few weeks before, Baker made a different decision. For years, they had pushed up the ranks of the sport from the sidewalks and sky parks to the biggest stages while also dealing with a lot of dysphoria and questioning. In February 2020, Baker decided the being themselves was greater than gold. They came out as transmasculine and non-binary, left Team USA and began pursuing their life. That story is now the subject of a documentary called Stay On Board: The Leo Baker Story. Baker beams up to talk about his path, the decision, and why skateboarding in the wild is greater than skating in grandest stage in sport. Cyclist Molly Cameron: Riot Grrls, Gravel and Gravitas Molly Cameron has been riding and racing since the late 90s. Before that she was a musician bashing through the punk/riot grrl scene of the era. It was also the era that she found herself as she also found the love for being on a bicycle and being fast on the road, on the gravel or in a cyclocross of many type of terrain. She was competing as a transgender woman in the days prior to the Stockholm Statement, the "tipping point", and long before the tenuous turmoil is the present day. Her travels through sport are a tale of doing whatever in love with and respect for their sport. In her 40s, she continues to race but has also found a place to speak out for inclusion in her sport and among her industry. In 2021, with a major world championship coming to a place in the USA that has passed one of the over 200 pieces of anti-trans, anti-lgbtq legislation that has cut-and-pasted across the political landscape, Cameron has been a leader in getting the cycling industry to get up to speed as an activist and used competition as a mean to support and build space beyond the "cycling as a toy specifically for the white and well-to-do. That push lead to the formation of Respect Inclusion Diversity and Equality (RIDE), an organization Cameron help found as a educational sounding board about gears manufacturers, bike manufacturers and those who ride. Also this week: A special anniversary at the intersection of sport and inclusion in an MMA cage.
