This episode is a recording of the session titled "Transgender People and the Church" at the recent Exiles in Babylon conference in Minneapolis. In this session, I give a short theological overview of Transgender identities and Mark Yarhouse gives a psychological perspective. And then, we had three people share their testimonies: Remi Rathjen (a Christian who experiences Gender Dysphoria and who hasn't transitioned), Julia Mallott (a transitioned transwoman who does not identify as a Christian), and Chloe Cole (a Christian who transitioned at an early age and then detransitoned). Send us a textKindness truly matters when it comes to supporting our LGBTQ+ loved ones - especially in today's climate of increasing anti-queer legislation. In this eye-opening conversation, Jennifer Boudrye, founder of Queer Allyship, shares her wisdom on how parents can navigate their child's coming out journey with compassion and understanding.Jennifer's path to advocacy began through personal connections and compassion. After years in education witnessing the struggles of queer youth firsthand, she now dedicates her life to empowering parents who may feel unprepared when their child comes out. Her approach is refreshingly straightforward yet deeply empathetic: "If your religion is leading you to hate anyone, you're doing it wrong."The most illuminating moments come when Jennifer breaks down complex concepts into relatable examples. She explains gender identity with a brilliant analogy—asking how someone knows they're right-handed. The answer? It simply feels natural. Gender identity works the same way. People know who they are because it feels right, not because of physical characteristics.Jennifer skillfully dispels dangerous myths about transgender care for youth, clarifying that gender-affirming care for minors primarily involves social affirmation and, in some cases, reversible medical interventions—all under careful medical supervision. The heartbreaking reality that only 40% of LGBTQ+ youth feel safe in their own homes underscores why her work is so essential.Whether you're a parent whose child has recently come out, an educator seeking to create safer spaces, or simply someone who wants to be a better ally, this conversation offers practical wisdom and compassionate guidance. As Jennifer reminds us, we all have the power to make our communities safer through understanding and acceptance.Listen, learn, and join us in creating a world where kindness isn't just a concept—it's how we treat each other every day. How will you show up as an ally for the LGBTQ+ people in your life?If you're looking for facts to counter your friends when they say hurtful things about the LGBTQ community and Trans kids here are a few.Seven Facts about Transgender people you probably didn't know.Mayo Clinic facts about being Transgender.Facts about Transgender People playing school sports. This podcast is a proud member of the Mayday Media Network. There is a lot of hate to go around these days and there seems to be a lot directed at the transgender community. There is so much misinformation and fear mongering going on. People seem to think that kids are having gender reassignment surgery at school and that their own lives are somehow threatened by someone who has the courage to try to live as authentically as they can. I invited Lisa McCourt on today- she is an author and podcaster as well as the mom of a transgender daughter. She's going to dispel some myths and set the record straight. According to a recent Pew Research Study about 5% of young adults in the US say their gender is different from their sex assigned at birth. This study was from 2022, and the number is growing. A rising number of Americans say they know someone who is transgender and 5.1% of adults younger than 30 identify as trans or nonbinary. Gender-nonconforming people have always been here and aren't going anywhere. Denying them rights doesn't deny their existence. Surveys have shown that transgender adults make up about 1% of the U.S. population  These people aren't going away and yet the amount of hate and disinformation that is being spread about them continues to grow. I personally know a few people who are moms to transgender kids, actually both of the people I know their kids are now adults in their 20's and 30's. Lisa shares her story and dispels some myths about transgender people. Lisa McCourt is a bestselling author of more than 40 books for adults and children, the creator of the online Joy School and a podcast host of Joy Zone with Lisa McCourt on the MindBodySpirit.fm podcast network. She is also the mother of a transgender child and President of her PFLAG chapter in Florida. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

And we will take as much time as it takes to talk about it!!! Trans people have existed and will continue to exist. Documented history notes a “third sex” as far back as 7000BCE. They existed in every culture, just as gay and queer people. They lived alongside many religions and are acknowledged in several. This ep is quite long. We won't be recording for about 3 weeks so we hope this will do. Be well. Stay safe. Get educated. Share information not misinformation. Does God ask us to support trans people in our community? Are we just listening to false doctrine? You know what false doctrine is? It's manmade religion parading as requirements from God. It's traditions of men that line the pockets of the leaders but leave everyone else, especially the vulnerable out to dry!Our transgender friends, family and loved ones are hurting right now and we need to speak up, stand up, come alongside them, and sometimes step in front to take some of the arrows coming their way. Send us a private message. *Note: INCLUDE YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS if you'd like us to answer. :-) Support the show

We're still waiting to hear what will happen to JayCee Cooper, the Minnesota transgender athlete who sued USA Powerlifting for discrimination in 2021 after the organization barred her from competing.  The Minnesota Supreme Court announced in July that it will review her case. USA powerlifting maintains she was barred because of her physiology, not because of her gender identity. It's within this environment that a south Minneapolis gym will host a deadlifting event in support of transgender inclusion in sport. The event is Oct. 19 at Solcana Fitness in south Minneapolis. It's called “Drop Deadlift Gorgeous.” For more, Event Director Max Poessnecker joined Minnesota Now to talk about the inspiration behind the event.

In “The Other Olympians: Fascism, Queerness, and the Making of Modern Sports,” the journalist Michael Waters tells the story of Zdeněk Koubek, one of the most famous sprinters in European women's sports. Koubek shocked the sporting world in 1935 by announcing that he was transitioning, and now living as a man. The initial press coverage of Koubek and another prominent track star who transitioned, Mark Weston, was largely positive, but Waters tells the New Yorker sports columnist Louisa Thomas that eventually a backlash led to the 1936 Berlin Olympics instituting a sex-testing policy for women athletes. Any female athlete's sex could be challenged, and cisgender women who didn't conform to historical gender standards were targeted as a result. These policies slowly evolved to include chromosome testing and, later, the hormone testing that we see today. “And so as we talk about sex testing today,” Waters says, “we often are forgetting where these policies come from in the first place.”

Are you Team Edward or Team Jacob or some secret third option?**Marcelle asks this question only at the very end of the episode, and you know why? Because there is so much more to discuss when it comes to Stephanie Meyer's Twilight. And who better to dig into this novel's plot and place in pop culture than Jackson Bird (he/him) who, over fifteen years ago, was a Twi-hard. If you frequent fan spaces, you might know Jackson through his previous work with Harry Potter Alliance or his very popular Youtube channel. Or perhaps you know him from guest spots on the podcast Harry Potter and the Sacred Text, his own (now retired) podcast Transmission, his 2017 Ted Talk (How to Talk and Listen to Transgender People), or his book, Sorted: Growing Up, Coming Out, and Finding My Place. Or maybe he's a new person to you, in which case, you're welcome — he rocks! In this conversation, Marcelle, Hannah and Jack discuss what was going on in 2005 that primed Twilight for such wide success. They ask: Why were young readers so hungry for a character like Bella? What does the plot of the novel suggest about the reading appetite of millennial readers coming of age in an era defined by impossible beauty standards and purity politics? When we refuse to disregard the interests, passions and literary preferences of young people, what can we discover about one another, our culture and ourselves? To learn more about the research that went into today's episode, be sure to follow Witch, Please Productions on Substack at https://ohwitchplease.substack.com!
