In 1998, Bill Clinton hosted a town hall on race and sports. 'If you've got a special gift,' the president said of athletes, 'you owe more back.' Gift and Grit shows how the sports industry has incubated racial ideas about advantage and social debt since the civil rights era by sorting athletes into two broad categories. The gifted athlete received something for nothing, we're told, and owes the team, the fan, the city, God, nation. The gritty athlete received nothing and owes no one. The distinction between gift and grit is racial, but also, Joseph Darda reveals, racializing: It has structured new racial categories and redrawn racial lines. Sports, built on an image of fairness, inform how we talk about advantage and deservedness in other domains, including immigration, crime, education, and labor. Gift and Grit tells the stories of Roger Bannister, Roberto Clemente, Martina Navratilova, Florence Griffith Joyner, and LeBron James – and the story their stories tell about the shifting meaning of race in America. Paul Knepper covered the New York Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book was The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All. “Women are still judged by a different metric than men”Amol Rajan speaks to Martina Navratilova, one of the greatest-ever tennis players, about her life and career. The story of her rise to the top of the game is as remarkable as the number of tournaments she managed to win.Born behind the Iron Curtain in Czechoslovakia in 1956, she was 11-years-old when she watched Soviet tanks roll in to the country as Moscow sought to reassert control and quash political reform.Navratilova, who played in her first tennis tournament when she was eight, rose to both national and international prominence in the years that followed. But in 1975, following the Czech government's efforts to control her tennis career, she defected. Aged 18, Navratilova sought asylum in the United States, where she later became an American citizen.During the late 1970s and 1980s she dominated the international tennis circuit, and by the time she retired, she'd won 59 major singles and doubles titles. But throughout her life, Navratilova has generated headlines on the front pages of newspapers, as well as the back. She came out as being gay in 1981, a rare thing for high-profile athletes to do at the time, and quickly became a prominent figure in the gay rights movement. More recently, however, she's found herself at odds with some groups due to her views on transgender athletes. She's also battled cancer on two separate occasions.Thank you to the Amol Rajan Interviews team for their help in making this programme. The Interview brings you conversations with people shaping our world, from all over the world. The best interviews from the BBC. The show opens with great financial numbers for the United States and still Jerome Powell, Fed Chair, refuses to reduce the interest rates. Even the governor of the Fed says we need to lower them. As to ICE raids, DHS says they will continue. Why wouldn't they? It's a winning subject for the President and it's opening up jobs for Americans who will be paid appropriately. Yet, the Left wants to unmask ICE agents, putting their lives at risk. More members of the independent media are starting to remember whispers of the CCP being involved in the 2020 election and helping to get Joe Biden elected. At the same time, did you even hear about the first USAID case brought by the DOJ where all four defendants pleaded guilty to a scheme the defrauded the government of over $550 million dollars? A letter meant for FBI Director Kash Patel was accidentally released from the Minnesota assassin. Seems he blames Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) for why he chose to become a murderer. We then spend time with Victor Davis Hanson on the Democrats strategy to be an opposition only party, with nothing else to offer. As we go through various topics it is clear, this is not helping the Left retain supporters. Israel issues a message to the people of Iran, telling them they are not being targeted. Israel is only interested in going after the dictators who are keeping them from being free. As we close, we hear from former tennis phenom Martina Navratilova and how she believes men do not belong in women's sports. It is so refreshing to hear. And, to send us into the weekend, I share two anecdotes from my own marriage to prove there are definite differences between men and women. Tennis great Martina Navratilova slammed Nike for alleged funding of a study on how much medication, hormones and surgery needs to be given to young boys to allow them to ‘fairly' compete in girls' and women's sports. The latest, plus Thursday morning's biggest stories on Hour 4 of the Bob Rose Show 4-24-25
Martina Navratilova is one of the world's greatest ever tennis players. She won a record-breaking 59 Grand Slam titles, including 18 singles titles, 31 doubles titles, and 10 mixed doubles titles. She was also one of the first openly lesbian professional athletes to come out publicly in the U.S. and has been an advocate for lesbian and gay rights. When it comes to the trans debate, Navratilova has always been clear, calling it ‘cheating' to allow transgender women to compete in women's sports due to the unfair physical advantages. She has admitted that the online backlash from transgender activists has been “pretty rough” and claimed she had been “jettisoned” by many LGBT groups for her opinions on Trans women in sports. Despite Navratilova's opinions, she has previously stated she is “all for trans rights on a civil level”, and her view is based purely on maintaining sporting integrity. In this special episode of The Daily T, Martina Navratilova joins Camilla and Kamal to discuss last week's landmark Supreme Court verdict and what it means for the sport in this country and around the world. And as Pope Francis's funeral is set to take place this weekend, we speak to the former editor of The Tablet, Catherine Pepinster, about who is likely to take his place as the Vatican begins the secret process of choosing the new Pope. Jim and Greg serve up all good martinis on 3 Martini Lunch as they break down President Trump's executive order banning men from women's sports, Attorney General Pam Bondi cutting off funding for sanctuary cities, and Democrats' electoral shenanigans backfiring in multiple states.First, they cheer Trump for signing an executive order to keep men out of women's sports, regardless of how those men "identify." They highlight America's overwhelming support for the move despite years of media narratives suggesting otherwise. They also note that even left-wing figures like tennis legend Martina Navratilova admit Democrats just handed Trump a major campaign weapon for 2024.Next, they applaud U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi for cutting off Justice Department funding to self-proclaimed sanctuary cities. Jim compares this to the transgender sports debate, emphasizing that the left ignores just how strongly Americans want criminal illegals out of the country and illegal immigration to stop. Finally, they take satisfaction in Democrats' political stunts likely failing in Minnesota and New York. In Minnesota, Democrats stalled state house business because Republicans temporarily hold a one-seat majority, but after weeks of dysfunction, a power-sharing agreement is finally taking shape. Meanwhile, New York Democrats appear to be retreating from an effort to delay a special election to replace GOP Rep. Elise Stefanik, which would have prolonged the razor-thin Republican majority in the U.S. HousePlease visit our great sponsors:Betterhelphttps://BetterHelp.com/3MLDiscover your relationship green flags and get 10% off your first month at BetterHelp.com/3MLNetsuitehttps://NetSuite.com/MARTINISee what is next for your business with the CFO's Guide to AI and Machine Learning free when you go to NetSuite.com/MARTINI. Season 3 of the TennisWorthy Podcast is here, just in time for the Australian swing and welcomes a new host in ITHF President and ESPN commentator Patrick McEnroe. Patrick and Chris Bowers bring two stories from Hall of Famers Hana Mandlíková and Pete Sampras. In reliving two key moments from their careers, Mandlíková and Sampras focus on their mental resilience and tenacity in overcoming challenges. Mandlíková, once seen as a natural rival to Martina Navratilova, became a Czech national hero, winning major titles like the Australian Open and Roland Garros. However, she struggled to break through the dominance of Navratilova and Chris Evert in the mid-80s. After improving her fitness and mentality, Mandlíková triumphed at the 1985 US Open, defeating both Evert and Navratilova, with the unexpected help of a Tina Turner anthem.Sampras, on the other hand, learned a crucial lesson about perseverance after his loss to Stefan Edberg in the 1992 US Open final. This experience drove him to dedicate himself fully to the sport, which eventually led to his success, including his 1996 US Open victory. He shares how he battled both illness and subpar play to outlast Alex Corretja in four hours and nine minutes in the quarterfinal.Stay tuned later in January as Patrick brings listeners more stories from the Australian Open. The TennisWorthy Podcast is presented by the International Tennis Hall of Fame. For more information and full episode transcriptions, visit tennisfame.com/podcast.

At my invitation, Steve Albini appeared on Kreative Kontrol at least once a year since its inception in 2013. We started a tradition where we spoke just ahead of annual, poverty alleviation Letters to Santa live events, such as the gala they're holding on November 23, 2024, at the Brookfield Zoo Chicago: Discovery Center, featuring Jeff Tweedy, Fred Armisen, and Kim Deal among others. To maintain the tradition and spirit of the talks we had, I plan to feature archival interviews I conducted with Steve over the years, presenting them here ahead of Letters to Santa events for as long as possible. Here's the second radio interview we ever did. It took place in the early summer of 2007 and was ostensibly about the then new Shellac album, Excellent Italian Greyhound, and touched upon local radio fame, Martina Navratilova, people who film concerts instead of participating in them, Canada, SCTV, John Peel, and more.Support vish on Patreon!
