Admissible: Shreds of Evidence

Content advisory: this episode makes mention of the sexual assault and murder of a child. Please take care if listening. In this special update episode of Admissible, Tessa Kramer returns to the mic to explore the aftermath of our 12-part series. Our investigation exposed the Virginia state crime lab's mishandling of a whistleblower's allegations against Mary Jane Burton, the lab's long-time Chief Serologist. Since our initial reporting, the Virginia Department of Forensic Science and its Scientific Advisory Committee have taken steps to confront the fallout. This episode highlights the case of Marvin Grimm, who spent 45 years in prison. The egregious nature of Burton's flawed evidence in this case not only clears Grimm's name, but also underscores the urgent need for the lab to take more drastic action in responding to our concerns about Mary Jane Burton. Audio of Mary Jane Burton testimony is from the Jens Soering trial. For more about that trial, we recommend the 2023 documentary "Till Murder Do Us Part: Soering vs. Haysom or the podcast, Small Town Big Crime Podcast - https://www.smalltownbigcrimepodcast.com/ --- Produced and edited by: Tessa Kramer and Ellen Horne Mixed and scored by: Charles Michelet Special thanks to: Megan Pauly, Ben Paviour, Meg Lindholm, Gavin Wright, Chloe Wynne, Dana Bialek, Danielle Elliot, Kim Nederveen Pieterse, and Steve Humble. --- Listen now on (https://admissible.vpm.org) or your favorite podcast platform. In 1990, Jens Soering, a German honors student at the University of Virginia, was sentenced to life after a spectacular televised trial for the 1985 murders of his lover's Elizabeth's parents, Derek and Nancy Haysom. In a classic example of “he said/she said,” at their trials the star-crossed lovers each pointed the finger at the other as the actual murderer. Were Jens and Elizabeth Romeo and Juliet or Macbeth and Lady Macbeth?  From his Virginia prison cell,Soering deployed his charm to create his own personal innocence project, recruiting celebrities such as Martin Sheen, John Grisham, Amanda Knox and even Angela Merkel. Soering was paroled and deported to Germany in 2019. Soering sold the rights to his story and launched a media campaign which portrayed him as a victim of America's cruel and arbitrary courts. Yet skeptics have questioned Soering's claims, and he is now locked in a pitched battle to define his place in history. A chief skeptic in the matter is Andrew Hammel, a bilingual German/English criminal lawyer and investigative journalist. Mr. Hammel traces the entire story, beginning with the bizarre romance which led to two gruesome killings. Drawing on five years of research and confidential sources with fresh revelations, Hammel takes the reader behind the scenes of one of the most extraordinary true-crime cases in modern history – and its equally gripping aftermath.

Jens Söring, usually rendered in English as Jens Soering, (born 1 August 1966, in Bangkok, Thailand) is a German convicted double murderer. In 1990, he was convicted in Virginia, United States of America of murdering the parents of his then-girlfriend, Elizabeth Haysom. For her role in the deaths, Haysom was convicted of two counts of accessory before the fact to murder. In prison, Soering claimed he was not guilty. After fourteen parole requests and numerous petitions for a gubernatorial pardon - all unsuccessful - he was released on probation and deported to Germany in 2019. Söring appears on talk shows, has an exclusive contract with Netflix and uses his case in the media. In Germany, for legal reasons, Soering is not allowed to accuse his ex-girlfriend of the crime. Instead, Soering portrayed himself as a victim and critic of an unjust US justice system. Jens Söring has published eight books and works as a speaker and consultant. After his deportation to Germany, he was a guest on numerous well-known German talk shows. In Germany, for legal reasons, he is not allowed to accuse his ex-girlfriend of the crime. This makes it difficult to engage with him directly and critically. Instead, Soring portrayed himself as a victim and critic of the system who defends himself against the injustice of the US justice system. In autumn 2023 Soering appeared in an exclusive “Netflix“-Special.

“I'm innocent!” The final words of defendant Jens Soering at his trial in 1990 are by now nearly world-famous. Immediately after he said those words, Judge William Sweeney pronounced him guilty, based on the jury's verdict. In this episode, Judge Ralph Guise-Ruebe renders his own verdict in the Soering case, based on the evidence known in 1990 and today. Would Soering still be indicted and convicted today? The verdict – the President of the Hanover Regional Court decides. The Jens Soering Case: A New Verdict

In June 2023, Daniela Hillers is heading to Washington for a trip back in time. The shocking double murder of Derek and Nancy Haysom in 1985 rocked the peaceful town of Lynchburg in the state of Virginia. The suspects in this case are Elizabeth Haysom, the daughter, and her then-boyfriend, Jens Söring, the son of a German diplomat. Their hasty departure from the USA raised suspicions that they might be involved in the Haysom couple's murders. This sets off a daring journey across Asia and Europe, ultimately leading to their arrest and detention. During her investigation, Daniela gains access to the evidence room and archives, conducts exclusive interviews, and talks to locals. It becomes clear that the shock from those past murders still lingers, and opinions about "the German guy" remain divided. Carelessness or malfeasance? Years after Jens Soering's conviction, various new pieces of evidence came to light. The jury at his trial was never told about the results of a luminol test on the getaway car, chief investigator Chuck Reid did not testify as a witness - on top of that: in 2016 the existence of a drawn up FBI perpetrator profile from 1985 is denied.  Procedural errors by the court in Bedford and a failure of the criminal defense attorney, who later lost his license because of errors he made in Soering's case? “DNA tests solve the case.” How often do we read headlines like this today? In the 2020s, DNA plays an essential role in criminal investigations and trials. But in the Jens Soering case, new DNA findings and expert opinions are hotly contested decades after the trial and years after his release. Does the genetic evidence from 2022 say something different than the serological evidence in 1990? What information do the DNA traces found at the scene of the Haysom murders provide about Jens Soering as a possible perpetrator? Does the absence of DNA at the crime scene prove the absence of a suspect? In this episode, Anne bakes up a delicious Strawberry Swirl Pound Cake. The recipe calls for Almond Extract and Kill Vanilla. Anne deviates and uses yummy strawberry jam. Karen recounts a double murder in Bedford County, VA, which is near Lynchburg, VA. Then, Anne gives us the terrifying murders by the Dating Game Killer, Rodney Acala, whose victims are vast and there are still more out there unidentified. The case Karen covers in Virginia is the Haysom Murders where a rebellious University of Virgina freshman and her college boyfriend plot the demise of her parents simply because she is spoiled and wants her way. The sisters don't agree with the name given to the Dating Game Killer because he was only on one episode and even though he won, the woman who picked him had the sense to not actually go on a date with him. They do agree that boob biting is never acceptable in any scenario.  They respectfully pay homage to Robin Samsoe, who was an unfortunate victim of Rodney Acala, but it was her murder that led to the solving of many others that actually got Rodney tried and convicted, even though there are many victims of his that are still unidentified. Investigators found over 900 pictures of his victims, but cannot release them because of the violence depicted of his torturing them in the pictures. Small Town Big Crime

Jens Soering and Elizabeth Haysom were granted parole in November of 2019 after serving more than three decades in prison. But the parole board also ruled that Soering’s claims of innocence are without merit, and he was denied a pardon by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. In the eyes of the law, Jens Soering murdered Derek and Nancy Haysom, and officials in Bedford County maintain the case is closed. But the parole board investigation was done in secret so it’s unknown if any additional DNA testing was done of crime scene evidence. That leaves some unanswered questions, like who are the two men who left blood at the crime scene? Retired Charlottesville detective Richard Hudson has reviewed the case and wonders if the Haysom murders could be tied to a gruesome stabbing murder that took place not far from the Haysoms' home within days of their murders. Two men were convicted of that crime. Those two men, Robert Albright and William Shifflett, also had a suspicious encounter with a Bedford deputy within days of the Haysom murders. There are others who may have information about the murders including an auto shop owner in Bedford who says he had an encounter with Elizabeth when she and an unidentified man retrieved a car from his shop that was covered in blood. There’s also Elizabeth's roommate at the University of Virginia who helped her write an alibi in the days after the murders. And a volunteer from the homeless shelter where Albright and Shifflett stayed in the days after the brutal stabbing reveals the two men made some troubling comments about killing three people, not one. Hawes Spencer, a journalist who has done years of in depth reporting on the Haysom murders, weighs in on the parole announcement and lack of transparency in the case. Officials in Bedford County are convinced that Jens Soering is guilty of brutally murdering Derek and Nancy Haysom in their home in 1985, even though new DNA testing suggests two unidentified men were at the crime scene. The refusal of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office to reopen the case and test additional evidence for DNA has frustrated many people, including a former lead investigator in the Haysom murders. Elizabeth Haysom has kept largely quiet since her conviction of accessory to murder before the fact in her parents murders in 1987. However, she did speak out after the new DNA revelations in 2016 and doubled down on her claims that her boyfriend, Jens, killed her parents. She told a newspaper reporter that suffering years of sexual abuse was the reason she wanted her parents her dead. Amanda Knox, the foreign exchange student who spent four years in an Italian prison for murdering her roommate before having her conviction overturned, dedicated a season of her podcast, The Truth About True Crime, to the Haysom murders. She weighs in on the case and talks about her connection to Elizabeth and Jens.Sound production by Taylor Thomas

Type O Blood was found at the crime scene and was an important piece of evidence in convicting Jens Soering in the 1985 murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom. But newly tested DNA evidence suggests Soering wasn't at the crime scene, and the Type O blood belonged to an unidentified male. More testing revealed a second unknown male left blood at the scene. DNA experts don't believe Soering could have been at the Haysoms' home when they were murdered. A small town sheriff named Chip Harding starts investigating and finds additional evidence that provides clues to who may have killed the Haysoms. A music mogul in New York City named Jason Flom advocates for Soering's innocence.Sound production by Taylor Thomas.

Small Town Big Crime

The weekend Derek and Nancy Haysom were brutally murdered in their home in Bedford County, their youngest daughter Elizabeth and her boyfriend, Jens Soering, had rented a car and driven to Washington, DC. After the killings, Elizabeth maintained Jens drove the 200 miles from Washington to Bedford County to confront her parents about their disapproval of their relationship and ended up stabbing them to death. But Jens has a very different story to tell. From behind bars at the Buckingham Correctional Center in Virginia, Jens gives his version of events that night in March 1985 and the days and months after the crime. He explains why he falsely confessed to murdering the Haysoms and how a DNA discovery supports his innocence. An attorney working pro bono for Jens discusses his 1990 trial in Bedford and several issues related to the Haysom murder investigation.

Small Town Big Crime

In 1985 Jens Soering and Elizabeth Haysom were bright, promising students at the University of Virginia when Haysom's parents were found brutally murdered in their Bedford County home. The young couple became the prime suspects in the crime and fled the country. They were arrested in London several months later, and British detectives found some disturbing letters. Haysom pleaded guilty to being an accessory before the fact in her parents' murders and testified against Soering, saying he committed the murders because her parents didn't approve of their relationship. Forensic evidence presented at the trial sealed Soering's fate, and he was sentenced to two life sentences for the murders. But not everyone was convinced Soering could have committed the crimes.

Small Town Big Crime

It was the bloodiest crime scene investigators in Bedford County had ever seen. Derek and Nancy Haysom were stabbed more than thirty times in their own home. There was plenty of forensic evidence to collect, but detectives had few leads. After months of dead ends in the investigation, the couples' youngest daughter, Elizabeth, aroused suspicions with her strange behavior. When detectives started questioning her and her boyfriend, Jens Soering, the young lovers fled the country.

S9E4: UPDATED + ADDITIONAL CONTENT: Jens Soering: Fatal Attraction to Free Man This is an updated episode from season 8 with 22 minutes of new content. In 1985, Derek and Nancy Haysom were found brutally stabbed to death in their Bedford County, VA home - both nearly decapitated. When their daughter Elizabeth Haysom became a prime suspect, she and her boyfriend, Jens Soering, the son of a German diplomat, fled the country. The authorities finally caught up with them in London, and if extradited and found guilty, Elizabeth would face the electric chair. Under the illusion that his father’s diplomatic status would protect him from facing the death penalty in Virginia, Jens sacrificed himself for Elizabeth and gave a false confession that was riddled with inconsistencies. Upon learning of his misunderstanding and before being extradited to the US for trial, Jens fought and won a landmark judgment (Soering v UK) in the European Court of Human Rights, protecting himself from facing the death penalty upon his deliverance to Virginia. At Jens’ trial, prosecutor Jim Updike told the jury that Soering's confession was corroborated by several drops of type O blood at the crime scene - Jens’ blood type. None of the Haysoms had type O, so the blood had to be his. Updike repeated this claim 26 times. Jens was sentenced to 2 consecutive life terms. Elizabeth was convicted as an accessory. After almost 30 years in prison, DNA testing eliminated Jens Soering as a possible source of the type O blood at the scene. In 2017, two independent DNA scientists confirmed these findings, and they also found DNA evidence showing the presence of a second unknown man with type AB blood. The crime remains unsolved; however, Jens Soering’s wrongful conviction remains on his record. After over 33 years in prison, he was paroled on November 25th, 2019, along with Elizabeth Haysom, and is finally back in his home country of Germany. In this episode, you will hear excerpts of the original interview with Jens Soering, novelist John Grisham, and Sheriff J.E. "Chip” Harding of Albemarle County, VA. Then, Jens and Jason go over parole board strategy with Dr Phil, and finally, we hear reactions from Amanda Knox and Sheriff Harding - both of whom worked so hard on Jens’ behalf. Soering confessed then recanted. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Haysom is serving a 90-year sentence. Soering, son of a German diplomat, has maintained his innocence for 31 years. He says he confessed to spare Haysom. Chuck Reid now believes in Soering's innocence. This interview was conducted on January 11, 2017. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
