Walking through the Parowan Gap Petroglyphs in southwestern Utah reveals ancient rock carvings that tell stories of migration, astronomical knowledge, and the spiritual beliefs of Native American peoples who inhabited this area centuries ago.• Located near St. George and Cedar City, the gap is an ancient dried riverbed cutting through solid rock• The Paiute people call the creators of these symbols the "Winoos" - their ancestors who were the first settlers• One significant panel depicts migration from an "old world" to a "new world," showing hardships like famine, drought, water crossings, and extreme weather• Petroglyphs show a leader who died upon reaching the new land, depicted with an arrow in his head and shown upside-down• Archaeoastronomer Noel and archaeologist V. Garth Norman revealed these carvings track celestial movements with remarkable precision• The site aligns with solstice events, with the sun appearing directly in the gap on the summer solstice• Different techniques were used to create petroglyphs: pecking (striking with tools), incising (cutting), and abrading (rubbing)• The site was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969• Mormon pioneers led by Parley Pratt made contact with Ute leader Chief Wakara, who called this area "God's own house"• These petroglyphs demonstrate how ancient peoples maintained intimate connections with the natural worldIf you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up so it gets out to more people. Guest Jennifer Raff is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Kansas. She works with Indigenous communities and tribes across North America who wish to use DNA as a tool for investigating questions of recent and more distant histories. Her first book, “Origin: A Genetic History of the Americas,” is a New York Times bestseller and has won multiple awards, including the Phi Beta Kappa book award in science. In 2024 she was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship (General Nonfiction) to support work on her second book. Why This Episode Matters Professor Raff discusses how genetic evidence has changed our understanding of the peopling of the Americas. Rather than a simple crossing of the Bering Land Bridge 13,000 years ago, DNA research suggests a more complex story involving population isolation during the Last Glacial Maximum (26,000-20,000 years ago), followed by multiple migration waves. Recent discoveries, like footprints at White Sands dating to 25,000+ years ago, continue to challenge existing theories. Three Important Takeaways Genetic evidence shows the ancestors of indigenous Americans descended from an isolated East Asian population that experienced gene flow with ancient North Siberians around 25,000 years ago. Beringia wasn't just a narrow "land bridge" but a lost continent twice the size of Texas, with its southern coast relatively habitable during the Last Glacial Maximum. Research in this field requires a multidisciplinary approach that respectfully incorporates indigenous knowledge and perspectives alongside scientific methods. ‘What does it mean to be on land that was taken from other people? Now that we know how the taking was done, what do we do with that knowledge?'Kate Grenville is no stranger to the past. Her success and fame as a writer exploded when she published The Secret River in 2005, a bestseller based on the story of her convict ancestor, an early settler on the Hawkesbury River.More than two decades on, and following the defeat of the Voice referendum, Grenville is still grappling with what it means to descend from people who were, as she puts it, “on the sharp edge of the moving blade that was colonisation”.So she decides to go on a kind of pilgrimage, back through the places her family stories happened, and put the stories and the First People back into the same frame, on the same country, to try to think about those questions. This gripping book is the result of that journeyIn this episode Gregory Dobbs chats to Grenville about where her journey into her family history took her and what she found there, about the words and language we've adopted to describe the history of colonisation of Australia, and where the defeat of the referendum on a Voice to Parliament might lead us as a nation.

This week Pete and Tommy dive into the totally and completely grounded world of humility. Why is humility so often misunderstood as self-deprecation? What is it about the cultural and historical shifts in how these concepts are perceived that makes being truly humble so hard?We begin with a JOURNEY THROUGH TIME (cue the echo), examining how ancient Greek society valued pride over humility and how this perspective flipped with the rise of Christianity. They delve into the role of Jesus Christ's crucifixion in redefining humility as a virtue (which was a BIG DEAL (echo again)), pondering how this transformation occurred so swiftly and profoundly. We also explore secular perspectives, highlighting David Hume's emphasis on modesty and intellectual humility.Plus, we have another segment of our one-segment gameshow about how we can possibly "eat humble pie" and Pete tries not to humblebrag but he's just terrible at it … at … not … doing it.
