156. Not Man Enough to Be a Woman: How William Allen Detransitioned After 30 Years

You Must Be Some Kind of Therapist

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2025 95:27

In this powerful episode, I speak with William Allen, a man who lived for 30 years as a “transgender woman” named Maggie before detransitioning between 2020-2023. William shares his remarkable life story, from his earliest childhood memories of gender dysphoria through his transition in 1993, to his religious awakening and eventual detransition. His newly released book, "Not Man Enough to Be a Woman," details this extraordinary journey.William begins by sharing the viral social media post that caught my attention on Detrans Awareness Day. He then takes us back to his childhood in the 1960s, where despite appearing as a typical boy who played with neighborhood friends and joined the Boy Scouts, he secretly wished he had been born a girl and would dress in his mother's clothes when alone. He describes how throughout his youth, he couldn't understand why he had these feelings, finding no answers even in psychology textbooks during college. William shares the story of his first marriage, when his gender dysphoria temporarily subsided during the initial years of falling in love, only to return "with a vengeance" later, ultimately destroying his marriage.By 1993, William began hormone therapy, had his beard removed through electrolysis, and underwent surgeries. He details the physical changes from estrogen, the workplace transition, and how he was able to "pass" in society as a woman for many years.William speaks candidly about his life as Maggie. He describes a deathbed reconciliation with his estranged father in 2015 and the conversation decades earlier that gave his book its title - when his father told him he wasn't "man enough to be a woman."The turning point in William's story came in 2020 when he experienced a profound religious transformation that changed his perspective on his life and identity. This led to his decision to detransition, a three-year process that included saving money, finding a surgeon willing to perform a mastectomy, legal name changes, and rebuilding relationships.William's story raises profound questions: What happens when a false identity embraced for decades no longer aligns with one's deepest values? After living thirty years as Maggie, William's return to his birth identity offers a rare window into the complexities of gender dysphoria, transition, and detransition that few have experienced over such an extended period. His story challenges simplistic narratives while offering compassion for those struggling with gender identity issues.William Allen struggled with gender identity disorder from childhood in the 1960s. Hiding his condition throughout his teenage, college, and young adult years, his obsession only grew stronger, eventually ruining his marriage. He began his “transition” in 1993. After hormones, beard removal, voice coaching, and surgery, he "passed" and settled into a successful life, until he rediscovered his faith. He completed his detransition in 2023, after 30 years living as a “transwoman.” William now speaks out against the transgender movement's deceptions and intentional targeting of children. We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, and CONCACAF Nations League chat and we're joined by AFTN writer Felipe Vallejo this week to talk about it all. Canada went into the CONCACAF Nations League finals with real hope of lifting their first trophy in 25 years, but a semi-final loss to Mexico shattered those dreams, before a feelgood win over the US end the tournament on a high for Les Rouges. We pick over the bones of both matches, the lessons that can be learned from them, and what some of the performances of individual players may mean for the future. Is Alphonso Davies still trying to do too much? Are some of the old guard needing to step aside? Do we have a number one goalkeeper at the moment? We chat about all of that and more. Turning our attention to the club game, Vancouver Whitecaps lost their first MLS match of the season, when a short-handed and disjointed side fell at home to Chicago. A mere blip to their good start, some real concerns about depth, or a mixture of both? We look back at the game, what can be taken from it, and look ahead to getting back on track in the Canadian derby against a poor Toronto side. Our feature interview this episode is with a Whitecaps first-teamer that's gone out for loan to the CPL for the season, goalkeeper Max Anchor. We chat to Max about his move to Pacific FC, his footballing journey so far, some of the new goalkeeper rules, and more. It's also Football Violence Awareness Month at AFTN Towers and we review the Netflix Polish football hooligan drama Kibic, while Antisocial feature in Wavelength. Plus Sleeper continue their residency as our Album of the Month, there's another Britpop song from Ash, and we talk World Cup qualification, the US Open Cup, and the new UK Ballers League. Joining Nathan and B.R for a Schizocast is gunsmith, Ben Gould, as well as private pilot and aircraft recovery specialist, Matt, both of whom are competitors of the cult-like annual shooting competition, Cola Warrior. The lads get into Cola Warrior and what the crucible of Peep eating, soda chugging, obstacle course centric and shooting challenges is like for competitors, with Ben sharing his two years of competing and Matt his three. The guys talk the surprisingly high-end prizes up for grabs, the competitor centric culture, array of different national events all over the USA, B.R formally apologizes to an Arizona friend for having never competed before despite yearly invites and the guys talk ideal soda types for chugging and what kind of rifle setup one needs to compete. The gang also get into a local scuffle in Nathan's neck of the woods between SRA members and an autistic MAGA guy, Nathan conceives the idea of an Art and War 'Anti-Social' shooting competition and what the drills would look like, the guys reflect on the Sig discussion last episode and discuss the situation less formally and much more!(This episode is not intended to reflect the opinions of Cola Warrior organizers and is simply a third party appreciation conversation).Check out one of our guests here:https://www.instagram.com/bmgould097/?hl=enCheck out PP.TF here:https://pptaskforce.comwww.instagram.com/pptaskforce.est23/Check out our sponsors:  Cloud Defensive / Chad Defensive Rifle / EDC Lights:For 10% off site wide, that stacks with any Cloud Defensive sales, use Code: ARTANDWAR10https://clouddefensive.comAttorneys for Freedom - Attorneys on Retainer Program, sign up via this link to support the show:https://attorneysonretainer.us/artandwar                       Use code: ARTANDWAR10 for $10 off an SMU Belt at AWSin.com Check out our Patreon here to support what we do and get insider perks!                              https://www.patreon.com/CBRNArtCheck out our link tree for the rest of our stuff:https://link.space/@CBRNartFollow the lads on IG:     Nathan / Main Page: https://www.instagram.com/cbrnart/?hl=en  B.R: https://www.instagram.com/br.the.anarchLucas: https://www.instagram.com/heartl1ne/

The Atlantic published a large article called "Anti-Social Century" which spurred on a conversation with Gretchen and Katie on why this generation of people is anti-social, and what to do about it. There's a rise in what they called "secular monasticism" with rigid morning routines, cold-plunge, meditation, gym time, and every angle of self-optimization. The attitude toward others isn't so much for the purpose of community building, but removing people from your life that does not assist with that optimization. The rise of "digital friendships" while often can be real, often lack the opportunity to give and receive forgiveness, or agree to disagree. Algorythms highlight commonality, and remove those who believe differently, and doesn't provide the sitting with those who are different that often is demanded from location-based friendships. The value of humility and vulnerability gives depth to friendships. There was a lot of this heafty article that we didn't even get to cover, but the discussion of how grace and forgiveness impacts community life in tangible ways remains. "The Having Said That Show" blends the raw energy of podcasts with the visual flair of talk shows, hosted by dynamic duo Adi (Aditya Lodha) and Jeh (Jehangir Havaldar). Adi, a musician lauded by Rolling Stone India and GQ India, brings his creative vision as the show’s founder, while Jeh, a certified fitness and nutrition expert, adds his sharp wit and humor. Joined by social media creator Aryana Dalal and food-obsessed film grad Aman, the crew dives into Mumbai’s cultural quirks, pitting Old SoBo nostalgia against New Gen trends. From debating Irani café royalty (Kyani vs. Britannia vs. Stadium) and bakery wars (Yazdani’s mawa cakes vs. Le15’s gourmet treats) to dissecting clubbing eras (Athena for 90s kids vs. antiSocial for millennials), the show packs chaos, humor, and nostalgia. Throw in tongue-twister mayhem—Jeh’s खड़क सिंह, Aryana’s पका पपीता, Aman’s कच्चा पापड़, and Adi’s लाली लल्लू—plus iPhone charades and spicy debates, and you’ve got a rollercoaster of laughs and relatable chaos. Whether you’re a die-hard SoBo townie or a self-proclaimed fraud, this hybrid show is your fix for Mumbai’s quirks, food, and unfiltered banter.
