Jens Söring, usually rendered in English as Jens Soering, (born 1 August 1966, in Bangkok, Thailand) is a German convicted double murderer. In 1990, he was convicted in Virginia, United States of America of murdering the parents of his then-girlfriend, Elizabeth Haysom. For her role in the deaths, Haysom was convicted of two counts of accessory before the fact to murder. In prison, Soering claimed he was not guilty. After fourteen parole requests and numerous petitions for a gubernatorial pardon - all unsuccessful - he was released on probation and deported to Germany in 2019. Söring appears on talk shows, has an exclusive contract with Netflix and uses his case in the media. In Germany, for legal reasons, Soering is not allowed to accuse his ex-girlfriend of the crime. Instead, Soering portrayed himself as a victim and critic of an unjust US justice system. Jens Söring has published eight books and works as a speaker and consultant. After his deportation to Germany, he was a guest on numerous well-known German talk shows. In Germany, for legal reasons, he is not allowed to accuse his ex-girlfriend of the crime. This makes it difficult to engage with him directly and critically. Instead, Soring portrayed himself as a victim and critic of the system who defends himself against the injustice of the US justice system. In autumn 2023 Soering appeared in an exclusive “Netflix“-Special.

The Jens Soering Case: A New Verdict

In June 2023, Daniela Hillers is heading to Washington for a trip back in time. The shocking double murder of Derek and Nancy Haysom in 1985 rocked the peaceful town of Lynchburg in the state of Virginia. The suspects in this case are Elizabeth Haysom, the daughter, and her then-boyfriend, Jens Söring, the son of a German diplomat. Their hasty departure from the USA raised suspicions that they might be involved in the Haysom couple's murders. This sets off a daring journey across Asia and Europe, ultimately leading to their arrest and detention. During her investigation, Daniela gains access to the evidence room and archives, conducts exclusive interviews, and talks to locals. It becomes clear that the shock from those past murders still lingers, and opinions about "the German guy" remain divided. Due to the international nature of the case, the original voices of Daniela and Ralph were replaced with English AI voices so that English-speaking listeners can also enjoy the podcast. However, in Episode 10, you will hear the original voices of the two hosts. If you want to learn more about the Jens Soering case, Investigator Chuck Reid shares his perspective in an exclusive report. He delves into observations and evidence that didn't even come to light during the original trial. For more information, check out: www.soering-case.com Learn more about your ad choices. The Jens Soering Case: A New Verdict

Since his trial in 1990, Jens Soering has insisted that his false confession was intended to protect his girlfriend at the time, Elizabeth Haysom, from execution. Do people really confess to murders and accept long prison sentences for others? In the second episode of this podcast, the focus is not only on Soering's confessions but also on the interrogation methods used at the time. What types of false confessions are there? What weight does a confession carry in an indictment and later at trial? More on this in this episode of the podcast “The Jens Soering Case – A New Verdict.” Due to the international nature of the case, the original voices of Daniela and Ralph were replaced with English AI voices so that English-speaking listeners can also enjoy the podcast. The Jens Soering Case: A New Verdict

Showdown of the former lovers in court: During the three-week trial in June 1990, Jens Soering and Elizabeth Haysom meet again for the first time since their arrest in 1986. Their encounter takes place in front of the cameras. Elizabeth Haysom takes the stand as the prosecution's star witness. But how reliable is her testimony? Can you believe a witness who makes a deal with the prosecutor and has lied so many times in the past? How should her unusually close relationship with prosecutor James Updike be assessed? More on this in this episode of the podcast “The Jens Soering Case – A New Verdict.” Due to the international nature of the case, the original voices of Daniela and Ralph were replaced with English AI voices so that English-speaking listeners can also enjoy the podcast. Could there be an indictment and conviction based on the evidence today? Was the 1990 trial lawful? What are the differences between the USA and Germany? In this episode, Anne bakes up a delicious Strawberry Swirl Pound Cake. The recipe calls for Almond Extract and Kill Vanilla. Anne deviates and uses yummy strawberry jam. Karen recounts a double murder in Bedford County, VA, which is near Lynchburg, VA. Then, Anne gives us the terrifying murders by the Dating Game Killer, Rodney Acala, whose victims are vast and there are still more out there unidentified. The case Karen covers in Virginia is the Haysom Murders where a rebellious University of Virgina freshman and her college boyfriend plot the demise of her parents simply because she is spoiled and wants her way. The sisters don't agree with the name given to the Dating Game Killer because he was only on one episode and even though he won, the woman who picked him had the sense to not actually go on a date with him. They do agree that boob biting is never acceptable in any scenario.  They respectfully pay homage to Robin Samsoe, who was an unfortunate victim of Rodney Acala, but it was her murder that led to the solving of many others that actually got Rodney tried and convicted, even though there are many victims of his that are still unidentified. Investigators found over 900 pictures of his victims, but cannot release them because of the violence depicted of his torturing them in the pictures.

Was ist dran an diesen Vorwürfen?

Small Town Big Crime

Jens Soering and Elizabeth Haysom were granted parole in November of 2019 after serving more than three decades in prison. But the parole board also ruled that Soering’s claims of innocence are without merit, and he was denied a pardon by Virginia Governor Ralph Northam. In the eyes of the law, Jens Soering murdered Derek and Nancy Haysom, and officials in Bedford County maintain the case is closed. But the parole board investigation was done in secret so it’s unknown if any additional DNA testing was done of crime scene evidence. That leaves some unanswered questions, like who are the two men who left blood at the crime scene? Retired Charlottesville detective Richard Hudson has reviewed the case and wonders if the Haysom murders could be tied to a gruesome stabbing murder that took place not far from the Haysoms' home within days of their murders. Two men were convicted of that crime. Those two men, Robert Albright and William Shifflett, also had a suspicious encounter with a Bedford deputy within days of the Haysom murders. There are others who may have information about the murders including an auto shop owner in Bedford who says he had an encounter with Elizabeth when she and an unidentified man retrieved a car from his shop that was covered in blood. There’s also Elizabeth's roommate at the University of Virginia who helped her write an alibi in the days after the murders. And a volunteer from the homeless shelter where Albright and Shifflett stayed in the days after the brutal stabbing reveals the two men made some troubling comments about killing three people, not one. Hawes Spencer, a journalist who has done years of in depth reporting on the Haysom murders, weighs in on the parole announcement and lack of transparency in the case. Officials in Bedford County are convinced that Jens Soering is guilty of brutally murdering Derek and Nancy Haysom in their home in 1985, even though new DNA testing suggests two unidentified men were at the crime scene. The refusal of the Bedford County Sheriff's Office to reopen the case and test additional evidence for DNA has frustrated many people, including a former lead investigator in the Haysom murders. Elizabeth Haysom has kept largely quiet since her conviction of accessory to murder before the fact in her parents murders in 1987. However, she did speak out after the new DNA revelations in 2016 and doubled down on her claims that her boyfriend, Jens, killed her parents. She told a newspaper reporter that suffering years of sexual abuse was the reason she wanted her parents her dead. Amanda Knox, the foreign exchange student who spent four years in an Italian prison for murdering her roommate before having her conviction overturned, dedicated a season of her podcast, The Truth About True Crime, to the Haysom murders. She weighs in on the case and talks about her connection to Elizabeth and Jens.Sound production by Taylor Thomas

Small Town Big Crime

In 1985 Jens Soering and Elizabeth Haysom were bright, promising students at the University of Virginia when Haysom's parents were found brutally murdered in their Bedford County home. The young couple became the prime suspects in the crime and fled the country. They were arrested in London several months later, and British detectives found some disturbing letters. Haysom pleaded guilty to being an accessory before the fact in her parents' murders and testified against Soering, saying he committed the murders because her parents didn't approve of their relationship. Forensic evidence presented at the trial sealed Soering's fate, and he was sentenced to two life sentences for the murders. But not everyone was convinced Soering could have committed the crimes.

S9E4: UPDATED + ADDITIONAL CONTENT: Jens Soering: Fatal Attraction to Free Man This is an updated episode from season 8 with 22 minutes of new content. In 1985, Derek and Nancy Haysom were found brutally stabbed to death in their Bedford County, VA home - both nearly decapitated. When their daughter Elizabeth Haysom became a prime suspect, she and her boyfriend, Jens Soering, the son of a German diplomat, fled the country. The authorities finally caught up with them in London, and if extradited and found guilty, Elizabeth would face the electric chair. Under the illusion that his father’s diplomatic status would protect him from facing the death penalty in Virginia, Jens sacrificed himself for Elizabeth and gave a false confession that was riddled with inconsistencies. Upon learning of his misunderstanding and before being extradited to the US for trial, Jens fought and won a landmark judgment (Soering v UK) in the European Court of Human Rights, protecting himself from facing the death penalty upon his deliverance to Virginia. At Jens’ trial, prosecutor Jim Updike told the jury that Soering's confession was corroborated by several drops of type O blood at the crime scene - Jens’ blood type. None of the Haysoms had type O, so the blood had to be his. Updike repeated this claim 26 times. Jens was sentenced to 2 consecutive life terms. Elizabeth was convicted as an accessory. After almost 30 years in prison, DNA testing eliminated Jens Soering as a possible source of the type O blood at the scene. In 2017, two independent DNA scientists confirmed these findings, and they also found DNA evidence showing the presence of a second unknown man with type AB blood. The crime remains unsolved; however, Jens Soering’s wrongful conviction remains on his record. After over 33 years in prison, he was paroled on November 25th, 2019, along with Elizabeth Haysom, and is finally back in his home country of Germany. In this episode, you will hear excerpts of the original interview with Jens Soering, novelist John Grisham, and Sheriff J.E. "Chip” Harding of Albemarle County, VA. Then, Jens and Jason go over parole board strategy with Dr Phil, and finally, we hear reactions from Amanda Knox and Sheriff Harding - both of whom worked so hard on Jens’ behalf. S8E1: Did a Fatal Attraction Lead to a Wrongful Conviction? The Story of Jens Soering Jens Soering is serving two consecutive life terms for a case of double homicide, the murders of Derek and Nancy Haysom in 1985–a crime he did not commit. On June 8, 1986, Jens Soering, the son of a former German diplomat, falsely confessed to killing the Haysoms. Jens "took the rap" for his girlfriend, Elizabeth Haysom, to save her from the death penalty for killing her parents. At Jens’ trial, prosecutor Jim Updike told the jury that Soering's confession was corroborated by several drops of type O blood at the crime scene. Jens had type O, none of the other people involved in the crime did, so the blood had to be his. Updike repeated this claim 26 times. A comparison of lab reports showed that in fact DNA tests had eliminated Jens Soering as a possible source of the type O blood at the scene. The same blood that in 1990 suggested his guilt now proved his innocence. In 2017 two independent DNA scientists confirmed these findings, and they also found DNA evidence showing the presence of a second unknown man with type AB blood. The crime remains unsolved and Jens Soering has remained behind bars for over 32 years. In this gripping interview with Jens Soering, Jason Flom is joined by novelist John Grisham and Sheriff J.E. "Chip” Harding of Albemarle County, VA, both of whom have advocated on Soering’s behalf. wrongfulconvictionpodcast.com Wrongful Conviction with Jason Flom is a production of Lava For Good™ Podcasts in association with Signal Co.
