It's time for The Great Maryland Recipe Hunt! Join us on this week's PreserveCast as we talk with Joyce White from A Taste of History to discuss the upcoming anniversary of one of Maryland's most iconic cookbooks, Maryland's Way, The Hammond-Harwood House Cook Book. This cookbook included recipes found in historic handwritten journals as well as many that were donated from Marylanders across the state. The Hammond-Harwood House and the Maryland State Archives are teaming up to continue the search for recipes that fully represent Maryland's evolving cuisine to honor this 60th anniversary. Joyce White is a foodways historian operating A Taste of History with Joyce White, offering interactive food history presentations with tastings on a variety of topics. Joyce is also the foodways consultant to the c. 1801 Riversdale House Museum in Riverdale Park, Maryland, was the consultant for the restoration of the 18th century kitchen at Annapolis' William Paca House, and was the guest curator for the Maryland State Exhibit for the Southern Food & Beverage Museum in New Orleans.
How does a cookbook get published? What goes into creating a cookbook, and what makes a cookbook great? While the author’s job is to write the book and create the recipes, a good editor will nurture the book until it’s in its final form, ready to send to the printers, before it’s sent to bookstores and eventually lands in the hands of readers. What does an editor do along the way? Why aren’t there metrics in American cookbooks? Why isn’t there a picture to accompany every recipe in every cookbook published? How does an editor (and ultimately…a publisher) decide who gets to be published? On my podcast, I talk to legendary cookbook editor Susan Friedland, who edited cookbook greats, including Paula Wolfert, Marcella Hazan, Felipe Rojas-Lombardi, Anissa Helou, Nick Malgieri, Alice Waters, Richard Olney, Raymond Sokolov, Joyce White, Nancy Harmon Jenkins, Patricia Wells, and Lydie Marshall. Susan also took a chance on an unknown author and was the editor of my first two books, Room for Dessert and Ripe for Dessert (!).Now retired, Susan remains a good friend and I enjoy visiting her at home (rather than in her office, although to be honest, we often met in restaurants as we both love eating), surrounded by bookshelves that are loaded with classic cookbooks, many that she’s published and others that she admires and continues to cook from. For our podcast, we chatted in her New York apartment and discussed the ins and outs of cookbook publishing and how things have changed in recent years, as well as what makes a cookbook a classic, as many of hers have become. I hope you enjoy our chat!-DavidIf you enjoy my podcast(s), you’re welcome to leave a review in Apple Podcasts. Get full access to David Lebovitz Newsletter at davidlebovitz.substack.com/subscribe

Jones is exiting an education career to venture into more marketing through her magazine, which is presently being divided into several phases to meet the demands of her clients. May 1, 2017, she launched the first phase of what she calls the four rivers, and the first of the four is the River & Word Business Connection. Jones's Business Connection phase was headlined by Wall Street's Bill Rearden and 8 figure Jeffrey Feldberg. Jones is also an author of Sharon & the Battles of Life and Love and America “The Eye of the Eagle”, which are both on Amazon.com. Jones hopes to venture into public speaking, to encourage the people of God, and share her powerful testimony of how she was unjustly laid off, with two daughters and unable to find work. She finally found a part-time teaching job with Cypress ISD, but it wasn't enough. Jones prayed to God for what to do and the Lord answered her with this, “start an online magazine”. Pam Jones had no knowledge or experience on how to start a magazine, but at His word she launched into the deep and River & Word Magazine was born November 2015. Jones passion is helping people “Make It Happen”.Pam Jones has been a prophetic worshipper through dance at conferences, churches and prayer groups. She wants to take her prophetic gift to gospel music videos, as an inspirational dancer. She wants to teach others the powerful gift of prophetic dance through educational videos, coming soon. In addition to dancing, Pam is a spiritual painter, whereas she paints in the spirit to bring message through painting for God's ministers.
